I think we're gon na call this why your protective style ain't protected or how to grow long hair. My hearing long all right, hey guys, welcome to my channel or welcome back to my channel, so i just want to talk. I just want to talk to you guys about protective styling, so it's been a hot minute since i've really touched on this subject - and i do a lot of protective styles on my channel, but the reality is not all protective styles are really protected, so i wanted To go over my favorite protective style first and then i'm gon na go over a few very like popular styles, that a lot of you guys wear a lot of you know just popular protective styles and reasons they probably may not be working for you and the Negative when it comes to these protective style, if you're not doing certain things right and then i'm gon na go over some products, i would say a few, but it's not a few. It'S not too bad that i've really been loving. They'Ve been my go-to products um, because i've really tried to narrow down what i'm using to see if it's actually benefiting my hair, if it's working or not, because when you have too many products, you really don't know. So i think this video will end up being a two-parter, so just be on the look out for that. All right, you guys, so i don't know if this will be a big shocker to you all, but it might be, but my favorite protective style are is mini twists. I love mini twists, so many twists, of course, are really small, as small as like you can get them um two strand twists that you know you put all over your head and that ends up being your protective style. One of the main reasons why i love mini twists is simply because it's low manipulation. Yes, your hair is still out your ends, aren't fully tucked away, however, you're not having to take any type of tools, any type of combs to your hair, no detangling. None of that kind of stuff, so you are simply just manipulating it. However, you want to style it. So it's very low manipulation which is key to length retention. That'S my absolute favorite styles. I wear mini twists as much as i possibly can. If you guys are ever wondering, what's underneath more than likely it's mini twists, because i can still wear my hair out because i don't always wear wigs, especially because we've been in the house, i haven't really been wearing them for a few months. Now, if i go somewhere, i'm really just wearing my mini twists, i may have on a cute headband. I can kind of do different styles with them very versatile, but more than likely, i just put them up in a bun or a low bun, just kind of pull them back a little bit and that's pretty much. It they're just very easy to maintain to style to put in, and you still look very put together. Another reason why i really like mini twists is simply because i can still maintain my hair. I can still continue on my hair care regimen, my routine, and i don't have to stop taking care of my hair. So the whole point of a protective style is a style that it's not necessarily wigs or crochet. Anything like that, but a style that is low manipulation. Your ends are protected, but with protective styles, you still have to take care of your hair, like you cannot neglect your hair, and i think that is the one thing. A lot of people forget they'll slap on a wig but they're not really maintaining taking care of their hair underneath and so they're, not seeing any growth they're, not seeing any changes in their hair and they're wondering why? Well, you still have to take care of your. The the hair that grows out your head and i'm still able to do that with mini twists. I can still wash them co-wash them deep condition. Moisturize get to my scalp, like all that stuff that i can normally do like. If my hair is just out, you can do with mini twists and you're, still not manipulating your hair with tools and combs and detangling brushes and all that kind of stuff which could possibly cause if you're not doing it right more damage than good. Some people do their mini twists like super super, like small, like micro mini twists. I don't do mine like that. I i try and get them as small as i can, but i have to be careful especially around my hairline, not to get them like super super small or not to make sure every single hair is pulled into the mini twist, because i do have a thin Hairline and it's very prone to breakage and it's already thin just like genetically. I have thin spots right here. It just runs in my family, so that's my spell on mini twists. I will say: whip mini twists, the smallest. You can go the better um because then the longer you can kind of keep them up in my opinion and the longer they will last. So that's just my opinion. So next i just want to go over a few protective styles and really kind of focusing on. Why they may not be working for you or what's causing them to not be so protective, so first things are i'm going to start with. What'S in my head, i'm going to start with braids. The main thing we know about braids is what, if they're pulling if they're too tight they're causing more harm than good. If you see little bumps on your hairline or in your scalp somewhere anything like that, then that is a sign that your hair is like. It'S struggling right now and saying somebody saved me because your hair is too tight. This is why i love trying new braid styles on my channel. I love trying to do things at home. You know and teaching you guys because fun fact about me: i've never had anyone else braid my hair, i've always braided my hair. We did not go to salons and nothing like that. My mom did our hair. When we were younger just growing up. I i didn't have a stylist until i got older and started wearing sew-ins, and then i had one person do my hair and then that was it. She was the only person that i trusted, but as far as like braids go, i've never had anyone actually braid up my hair. I think i would love to try it, but i don't know if i ever will, because from what i kind of know and what's kind of the obvious is that when you're in the chair - and you spent this much money, you want your braids and your styles Or your twists whatever to come out as neat as possible, you want them to last you as long as possible. You didn't spend 250 300 on whatever the case may be, and most people equate like tightness to it's done. Neat your braids. Don'T have to be super tight in order for them to be. You know done correctly also, the reason why i like teaching you guys or showing you guys what braid styles or twist styles that i do is because you can feel yourself when you're pulling too hard. You know what's too hard on your head, someone else doesn't know they don't know. What'S too much for you what you can take, what you can't take that kind of thing so yeah so you're not relying on anyone else. Um. It'S really like your own fault. If you braid your hair too tight but you're able to fix it, you're able to you know, take it out redo it fix it. Make it loose without you know, feeling like you've lost money. You lost time or anything like that. The next style i'm going to talk about quickly is just going to be wigs. The main thing i see as far as wigs go - and i think you guys can probably agree with me on this - is the hairline i've suffered from you - know hairline loss when it comes to wigs, because i just didn't know what to do, and sometimes i still Mess up like i still am like oh crap, i shouldn't have done that. In my opinion, they are definitely a really great protective style, as long as you are, of course, taking care of your hair underneath and also watching your hairline. The one thing that i'm stressing more than anything and the one thing that i've seen from following you know hairstylists, who are experts in. Of course you know the wig game and the wig field who take clients, and things like that, are a lot of younger women. A lot of younger girls are, you know, suffering from alopecia, from wigs from braids to i'ma, throw braids really any protective style if it's tugging on the hair, if it's tugging on you know the root can cause alopecia from what i know. Don'T don't attack me on this? It may not grow back. It just may not grow back, and that's not what you want so with wigs. I rarely use alcohol when it comes to my wigs. I know a lot of people use it all the time around. The hairline just because you do need like the hairline to be nice and dry before applying glues and all that kind of stuff alcohol. To me, it's not meant to be on my hairline. It'S meant to, you, know, put the little scratches up band-aids and all that kind of thing. It'S not meant for me to just rub all on my hairline, so when i do have to do it, i'm very, very cautious with it another thing: that's causing your hairline to become thinner or just the loss of it period is not taking the wig off correctly. I did this for a very long time. I didn't really know the best way to do it, but it also all depends on the adhesive. I couldn't tell you how to do it when it comes to glue, because i have only used like got to be glued gel and now i just use free spray and honestly that stuff comes off with just water water soak my hairline in it, and then i'm Good to go, if you are ripping your wig off at nighttime, your hair is coming out with it another thing: when you're wearing your wigs be careful of those combs, i would just say, don't use them. I have a video that i did maybe two years ago when i started to notice that my thin spots were getting like even thinner, because i used to wear the combs. That came, you know with the wigs, and that is a oh, my god. I would just say: don't use them at all they're pulling on the hair, so it's like you already have the wig on you have these combs that are pulling. You have to be extremely careful when it comes to those combs and you have to be very cautious. Just in general, when it comes to wigs, they are a great protective style. Wigs have done me done my hair really really good, really good. I am not complaining, but it definitely has taken me some trial and error, some trial and hair loss to really figure out what works. For me, what doesn't work for me, what are my best practices and i'm just kind of sharing them with you guys, so that's that on wigs, i love me, some inches y'all sure do so. The last protective style i'm going to touch on is going to be crochet all crochet, a good crochet. Well, it's not when you are crocheting your hair. You have to braid your hair down. Let'S start with those cornrows one. If your cornrows are too tight, that's a problem if your hair is thinner and you have to add hair to your core rose and that braiding hair is irritating your scalp that's a problem. Those are two main problems that i know with crochet that i've seen with crochet we're just starting with the base of it itching from your braids and your braids being too tight. I'Ve put my braids in too tight before, and i've had to take my crochet out like the next day or two or something like that, because it was just too much on my scalp if your hair is finer if it's thinner and you're, adding braiding hair so That you can get a really great base that hair can cause itching. I'Ve had cornrows installed on my hair before that's why i'm kind of speaking on cornrows crochet, because those two kind of go hand in hand. I had a sew in at this point in time and i scratched my scalp so bad. I was digging into my scalp. You guys, and i started to like really like bleed. This was maybe what nine years ago, um eight years ago, when wigs weren't as popular as they are now, you know, sew-ins were still the thing i did not know it was the actual braiding hair that was used in my hair to create a base for the Actual sew-in, so that can be the same issue when it comes to crocheting and that is damaging to the hair to the hair follicle. My head was literally screaming you. Ain'T gon na have no hair says unless you take this out. So next you have to install the crochet, and so not only if you're, installing it on tight braids you're now putting a needle through, of course, and then you know, tying the hair each time into a knot. That'S doing even more pulling on your hair and so that's another issue when it comes to crochet like before you even finished. You already got problems because your hair is too tight. So that's another issue you have to watch out for it's just not making sure everything is so tight. It will last you. I promise you things will last if they're done neat, it doesn't have to be tight in order for it to be neat. Another thing with crochet is: if you have leave out and you're not properly taking care of the little bit of leave out that you have that's a whole nother issue too. Your hair can get all tangled up and through the crochet hair, causing more damage. Tangles not dryness, if you're not braiding it down by itself or doing whatever you have to do to properly take care of it. While it's out that's going to end up causing you more harm than good, and you wonder like why the heck did i try this crochet style, i'm ending with less hair than when i started well friend. That'S because you, you are not doing what you should be doing, so i just wanted to point out those three things, just kind of what i notice and what i try not to do when all that kind of stuff when it comes to you know those type Of protective styles, i love all three of those protective styles, but i'm pretty good with you know not doing everything that i that i've said with those three styles, the one thing i can do so much better at you guys and i think the one thing many Of us can do much better at is taking care of our hair underneath protective style. I don't pull my braids tight. I don't pull my hair tight. The one thing i need to get much better at is really keeping my hair moisturized underneath my protective style. I was so good at that and saw all the benefits from it, and then i stopped i've gotten so lazy and it doesn't take much. It doesn't take much effort to keep your hair underneath properly moisturize your scalp with a little bit of oil, so yeah. So, there's that you guys next, i'm gon na go into products.

strangekitty18: "It doesn't have to be tight to be neat." Great advice for any hair type. That one sentence can save a lot of edges if heeded.

Ms.Bubs4fun: Also, nothing is wrong with showing our naps. I'm not messing with my nappy edges. I leave it out.

Fall H.: I’m literally wearing a braided wig for the last three weeks and I haven’t done a wig since 2016. My anemia got my hair all broken and weak soooo Yes give the advice lady girl. I’m here for it !!!!

Whoome: Thank you! I saw a Instagram post comment from this woman stating that if your edges isn’t laid then your hair won’t look polished. Nothing wrong with laid edges but it has become THE standard and it’s just a trend

Momo Shiggles: I agree completely about tight braids. No tight braids. I've grown my hair past shoulder length by doing my own braids for almost two years. I've been able to GROW my edges by carefully braiding them, therefore protecting them from breakage. I do have to say that I was not losing my edges, I was just able to add length to my edges. They are about 2" to 3" long right now.

Anointed by God: Yup I love mini twists. I big chopped about 9 months ago and they’ve helped my hair grow so much!! I just do the loc method daily and keep it moving

Maame Yaa Apea-Dankwa: Thank you so much for the information! Can’t wait for part 2! Had a question how long should someone wait before installing another protective style?

Jamaican Beauty: Love the intro . Bring on the products!! I love youtubers like you, y'all are trying out all these things and you give honest breakdown and feedback

Mel W: Girl say it again.."no one else knows how tight their braiding your hair"!! Plus if you happen to go to a hair braiding salon and let's say you have bra strap length hair and they go to dip your braids in the hot water!!! Honey they may have fried your real hair in boiling water and not even know it until you go to take your braids out!!! Smh

Just Joia: It’s funny because you never (or at least I haven’t) thought that I need to care for my hair since it’s protected. Only my scalp since it was visible. Thanks for the tips. ❤️ Waiting on part two.

SAS 1: As a child my aunt would always braided our hair way too tight along with our ponytails. She would make my ponytails so tight it changed the shape of my eyes and I would have those little white bumps. After experiencing that I only wanted my mom to do my hair. She did not braid my hair like my aunt. If was a huge difference.

chasCITY Vlogs: What do you suggest for someone like me who has lost a lot of hair from combing my locs out and putting box braids in right after? I have fine curly hair and want to find ways to grow it back out!

Quiesha: Me personally I just wear half wigs. Nothing close to me edges because I ain’t gluing shit down. That’s way my hair can still grow and I get cute hairstyles for the moment.

Trina Taplin: I love your styles & love watching you, but fact of the matter for me is that the time it takes is time and patience I don't have. I would love to find one person that can do these styles for me.

Jannell: Loved the video! At the end you talked about how regimen you used to keep your hair moisturized helped a lot! Can you PLEASEEEE do a video on that specific regimen (products, methods, how often, maintenance) if it’s not going to be in Part 2??

Carla Campbell: Amen! Thank you so much for this information

ASHANTI: Haven’t even watched the video yet, but liking automatically! Hey girl!♥️

Makinni Roberts: That shade of blue though!!

Jeralyn Langford: Can we get a video on how you take care of your hair while they’re in twists?

Virgo Seventy Three: I favor the Faux Locs when doing my hair. I do individual braids/plaits small to shemedium ... Only because I don't know how to cornrow, French braid, etc... It's sooooooo light after crocheting... I do the Jazz Nicole Method

Nkatha_love: Alcohol is not meant to be used on the hairline but on the skin infront of the hairline where you place the wig. The wig should never be on the hairline. That’s why you should slick your hair back to get all the baby hairs out of the way so they don’t caught under whatever you’ll use to lay the wig

Platinumbooty 94: My twists turn into locs real fast eventhough they unravel at the ends

Latonuga.Lonbergermua: Professionally you have to take care of your hair before you even do styles. All the oils and products people use are not necessary, your hair makes oil anyway.

Nique 0606: I love mini twist that is all I been rocking all 2020

Moi: All Crochet Ain't Good Crochet! Says it again sis!

Britt Young: That blue is so vibrantly beautiful on you!

GodswithmeKim: Can you do a mini twist and style video for 4c hair. Please.

Roudia Alceus: Great video. Everyone should be watching this videos very informative

Thecleaningmommy : Put on a wig last week and use the got 2 be glue freeze spray, it took a spot out my edges. I said heck no now it's trashed.

Alissa Smith: Oh wow. It's rare that I make it before the comments fill up . Love the channel. Definitely needed this video before I try a new style this weekend.

Sharing Sharing: I have in long med/large box braids and i have them kinda loose. So i do not have scalp pressure at all. My favorite protective style is braids. My hair is not long enough for mini twists.

154angel154: My hair's density bbn is just NOT set up for mini-twist! How I wish!

sea orchids: Do you have a video on how you lay your edges down? I really like the way yours look.

ChicStyleYoYo: at the intro!! Baby hairz is LAID sis!

Kingdom Beauty: Any video on installing wig and taking off ? Any suggestion on itchy hair. I don’t do braids bc it itch my scalp. But I want to try bc I’m about to cut it all off.

Latonuga.Lonbergermua: You are learning so much, you should go to school for hair styling.

Crystal Johnson: Nice. What do you use to edit your videos?

Chaunique Martinez: My hair to fine braids lol they slide right out

Illonda Argro BSN RN: Can you add extensions to your mini twist if your hair is short but you still want the look

Blessed and highly favored: Soooooo...if you're wearing upart wigs how are you suppose to attach it if you're suggesting not use the "combs" in the wigs?

Latonuga.Lonbergermua: That bulky hair y’all clump up in the back, I’m not a fan...
