Hey, what's up guys and gals, my name is Rick 9g. Thank you so much for joining me today. We'Re gon na be talking about. I Love Lucy, more specifically about one particular hour-long episode from the lucy-desi comedy hour or the hour-long. I Love Lucy series and that is called Lucy hunt uranium now it premiered January 3rd 1958, and there was something very unique about this episode. Well, this episode actually had a lot of unique things, but this one in particular we're going to talk about Lucy and her hair and the wigs that she apparently had now how many people actually knew that she had multiple wigs during the course of this episode, and Even subsequent other episodes, I'm gon na talk about why and where you can spot them now, just to refresh your memory. Let me talk about the episode in itself now on this one Ricky and his band have been booked to play a casino in Las Vegas. The Sands, Casino and Lucy hopes a trip will allow her an opportunity to go uranium hunting. Hopefully she can find that uranium make a little bit of profit on that, of course, and she wants Fred and Ethel to go with her and they're excited about the idea. But Ricky forbids it until a headline says that the entire town is in an uproar because there is uranium there, so the Ricardos, the Mertzes and a special guest actor Fred MacMurray guest star in this episode and they decide to all strike it rich together. It is enough amazing, in my opinion, I love this episode so much it's the beginning of the concept of a rat race movie, a rat race show, and I think they do it pretty well, for all the struggles they did have on camera. There'S even a quick appearance by Jun haver, the then wife of Fred MacMurray, as previously stated Lucille Ball or new short red wigs for this episode. In fact, she were four different ones for this episode, which to me is simply amazing. Now, there's only a brief mention of her new hairstyle in the first scene, by, of course, Vivian Vance playing Ethel Mertz and never was it mentioned later on again that she's not wearing her own hair. Now you may ask why in the world, did she wear these wigs? Well, there's a real has to do with desi arnaz. Now this all comes from Lucy's hair, stylist, Erma hustler. I hope I'm saying her last name right and she said that that bun hairstyle now that was Lucille Ball's idea now, neither Bert French nor ear ma ever liked the idea. Now they kept asking Lucille Ball to let her cut it and give her a more modern. Look but she resisted, because she said that desi actually liked the long hair on her. So he wanted Lucille Ball to keep the long hair for basically everyday and for the show to have that short hair. So the only solution would of course be a wig, and that was proposed by ear ma now Irma Irma. However, you want to say it: bleached Lucille, Ball's, hair all around the hairline, so none of it would show through, and she ordered that stylish short wig that we basically see in the beginning of the episode from this point forward. Every time you saw a Lucille Ball in public, she was wearing a wig, ordered and styled by this lady ear ma and the wigs gave her an opportunity to bandage her skull and help smooth out her wrinkles. Now she even made braids and special places as well and pinned the curls with the rest of her hair. This is from, of course, an anecdote from ear ma they continued by using a host stocking cap and they covered the skull bandage. Now she made it very tight in both her head and it created the smooth surface. Then she put the wig on made an eighth of an inch shorter than her own hair, matching her very own hairline. So eventually, Lucille Ball were cut her own hair as well. Now the process could be painful at times, because of course it was pretty painstaking to go through. It did take a while, but she tried to make Lucille Ball as comfortable as possible and after some time she got used to it and she hardly could tell the difference. According to Lucy herself, she didn't like the clamps at first, but she felt that she couldn't move her face. It was a strange feeling and it kind of hampered her comedy in her opinion, but then there was no denying that it looked that much better on film and she agree with Irma that this was the best choice for her. Now, honestly, in the comments below guys and gals, let me know which of you actually knew that she had not one but four different types of wigs throughout the course of this episode. I never knew until I of course found out about it, and it was something that I never noticed by just watching this episode. Many many times do you think it was a smart choice for Lucy to do. Do you think that desease choice and having her keep her long hair was a good choice or not? Of course, it was something that was done between them and in their marriage, but I want to know your thoughts down below guising aus. What do you think of this episode in general? Cynthia Marvin: As a wig wearer myself, the ones Lucy wore were very high quality human hair wigs for 1958...and very talented hair dresser as well! That’s why they were undetectable oh I was born July 1958 and always loved the reruns of I love Lucy

Ralph Angioli: Considering that this was when Lucy and Desi’s marriage was at it’s worst I’m surprised Lucy still cared what Desi thought of her hair. Little did Fred MacMurray and Bill Frawley know they’d soon be working full time together on My Three Sons.

Julie R. : I heard from Lucie herself that when she was with Desi when he was dying, her mom called and said to Desi "I love you" a bunch of times. She dearly loved Desi till her last breath.

Heather Marie: It’s very bittersweet that Lucy didn’t cut her hair because Desi liked it long. Proof that there was still love and respect for him even though he hurt their marriage. I wonder if they had asked Lucy what SHE wanted, what she would have done?

Christopher Kraft: This episode with Fred MacMurray was great, I had no clue that Lucy wore wigs. Thanks Rick for the look inside the scenes

moccalou: Gotta love Ethel's bugged out eyes at 1:30. She always does that when meeting celebrities. Ricky does it too, but usually only when he gets surprised by one of Lucy's antics. I love that they have that in common. Wow, I had no idea that Lucy even wore a wig. I just thought she cut her hair short near the end of the run. Her bun was iconic and looks great on her. I think she should have just ignored fashion and just kept wearing the bun for the rest of the show. I think that uranium hunting episode is my favorite of the Lucy Desi Comedy Hour. I loved how Fred MacMurray was very playful and seemed like a normal guy and not a celebrity. And I love how he got into the rat race. Waving at Lucy, Ricky, Fred and Ethel on the handcar on the railroad tracks made me laugh a lot the first time I saw it. He should have become a regular! XD

Jared Wignall: Never knew she wore a wig in any of the episodes, let alone four of them. Thanks for the information Rick, it was very interesting.

Laurel S: Thanks for this video. I knew a lot of actresses in that era wore wigs so that they could use and hide tape to tighten sagging jaw lines and wrinkles, but I didn't know Lucy was one of them. Very interesting!

Danielle Giannandrea: Wow, I had no idea she was wearing a wig!! I enjoyed this episode. (I actually really loved all the comedy hour episodes.) I have to say I prefer the bun hairstyle, but I understand she had to change with the times

Joe Sinkovits: Wow, Rick! Another mindblower! I never had a clue that those were wigs, and I’ve been watching one hour-length episode each night for the past week! Lucy’s shorter hairstyle kind of reminds me of the hairstyle she had in the very early I Love Lucy episodes. Though I, along with Desi, prefer her longer hair, I much prefer this shorter style to the style worn by “Lucy Carmichael” in The Lucy Show. And, if I’m not wrong, Lucy Ricardo had much nicer, more natural-looking false eyelashes than did Lucy Carmichael. Just my opinion, though. Thanks, Rick!

Ceil: I guess I don't understand other people's definition of "long" hair. IMHO, Lucy's hair has always been short. Great video as usual Rick

Kenneth Butler: I was an I Love Lucy fan since I was old enough to turn on the TV. This episode was the first time I found out about hour long shows (I must have been about 8 years old) and I was thrilled! This would have been Sat. morning reruns in the late 60's. Needless to say, Lucy's wigs were not anything I noticed; I was too thrilled to have an hour long show to watch!

Rick Loera: I never knew that she wore a wig. This is one of my favorite episodes. I have to admit that considering this show had run its course on tv, it always stayed fresh. In my opinion every season, I Love Lucy got better and better.

Justice Prevails: I thought the new hairstyle aged her. Of course, she was older than I imagined during the actual production of the show, but the new style made her go from mother of young child to grandmother overnight. JMO.

LucyVanPelt: I was 10 or 11 when this episode aired. It was one of my very favorites. I thought the idea of a Geiger counter to find uranium was awesome and I wanted one. I was reading a book at that time about two young teen girls who went to the Grand Canyon with their families for vacation. This book and the Geiger counter made for a great mind adventure! I remember talking to my Dad about it. I did not know Lucy wore wigs in this episode. Thanks for sharing this! ❤️

zzzut: I think she looks great with short hair. She also looked stunning in the black Italian style wig in a 1954 episode.

Lori H: I never knew she’s wore wigs. Always thought it was her real hair.

Martin Beneteau: I always thought she just cut her hair. I also agree that it modernized her look and made her look younger.

Glamdolly30: You're almost right about the wigs - they were actually ordered and used as a cover story for Lucy's recent face lift. A new hairdo is the oldest trick in the book to divert attention from your newly nipped and tucked face. Take a good look at Lucy - it's not just her hair that's different!

True Rose: Some additional trivia: Lucy's real life hairdressers' names were integrated into the I Love Lucy plots as follows: the name of her hairdresser "Bert" is used in the episode "The Black Wig" where Lucy wants a short Italian haircut, and Ricky prohibits her, so she dons a short black wig while at the hairdresser. Irma Kusley's first name is correctly pronounced "Eer-mah" . We know this because in the episode "Lucy and John Wayne", Lucy and Ethel, both in curlers, get a call from their hairdresser, Irma reminding them of their hairdresser's appointment. Lucy's hair was not always in a bun, as evidenced by a handful of the first season's earliest episodes. The bun, incidentally was also worn by Lucy's good friend, Eve Arden, in her TV show, "Our MIss Brooks" also filmed at Desilu. Lucy's red hair color ( admittedly mousey brown, but dyed red) always produced a great laugh, and was mentioned in - Season 1- "Cuban Pals", Season 2 "Ricky and Fred are TV Fans", Season 3- "Lucy Tells the Truth", Season 4 "The Business Manager", Season 5- "The Passports" and Season 6 "The Country Club" Dance". I'm SURE that I'm missing some episodes. Can you help me out? Of course Lucy frequently dons various wigs (too many to mention) throughout the series as needed by the plot.

Patrick Powell: Didn't know her actual hair stylist was named Irma. Irma was also the name of the hair stylist Lucy referred to in the episode "Lucy And John Wayne".

Joyce M.: Great episode but I liked her own hair better...that was "our" Lucy!!

KENNETH LEE: The Fred Mac Murray episode was, to me, the funniest episode made. It could easily have been expanded and made into a movie.

Julie Vander Leest: It’s so hard to tell these kind of details and being the show was b&w, it was virtually impossible. However the shorter hair did look better on Lucy, because I think after years of pulling her natural hair back so tightly and that she dyed it, it damaged her hair and it looked pretty stringy when longer.

Kenneth Bjorkmann: I never knew about the wigs.  Interesting.  I liked the way Lucy looked in the original "I Love Lucy" episodes (1951-1956).  She was a beautiful woman, even in later years.

gypsygrl1: I like the episode where she pretends to have her hair cut short and died black like an Italian.

Danadu82: I didn’t know about this specific episode but I had read that she switched to wigs at some point for the very reason you stated, that she could give herself a non surgical face lift.

Lisa O: I never knew about the wigs either. Lucy was very pretty and very talented. She paved the way for other comedienne actresses. Good video Rick!

44macymoo: This episode is my favorite of the hour long shows too!! I used to play "finding" uranium when I was a child because of this episode. I never knew Lucy wore any wigs on her show. I like her hair in the original I Love Lucy shows the best. The shorter hair looked nice when she was doing the shows without Desi. I saw a picture of Lucy dressed in a mini skirt with a long haired braid titled, "Lucy in London" and she looked absolutely stunning. I enjoy all your videos. You are obviously an "I Love Lucy" super fan too.

D Lee: I honestly never liked her hair changed from the was it was in the earlier episodes. Ha I hate change. But I have to agree with Desi on the long hair ! I remember in several movies she has longer, flowing hair. She was so pretty !!

asteverino: As a kid, I really liked this episode. Greed comedy. Haha The antics that occurred during the race, were great. I never had any opinion on the hair style change. Didn’t know it was a wig though. ‍♂️

Jennifer Hansen: I had no idea she ever wore wigs. This was interesting.

LoveLife: Lucy's hair looked different all the time, but I thought it was still her real hair. TFS

Thea Stewart: I always loved Lucy’s hair pulled back. It was my favorite. But she always looked pretty.

Karen For Your Dancing: Interesting! Lots of good info there! Thanks for telling us about it! I just thought she had got her hair cut! ✂️

Stephen Nixon: The Lucy Desi Comedy Hour used to come on in the summer when I was a kid. I waited for this one with Fred McMurray because it was by far the funniest. I had no idea she was wearing wigs I thought she just cut her hair. She always had that bun on I love Lucy so I did like this look for her. Fred McMurray driving that T Bird stole the show for me.

traczebabe: I never knew she wore wigs at all! That is so interesting. I’m a hair dresser, I haven’t met a husband yet that didn’t want their wives to have longer hair. ☺️

Phillip K. Brodie: Rick, that was great! I had no idea that she started wearing wigs that far back. So that signature Lucy look started out as a wig. I guess it makes sense to try it out that way in case she didn't like it. We probably rarely saw her real hair after this.

Cheryl S.: I'm a little surprised that Lucy would keep her hair long because that is what Desi liked. I always had the impression that she was am independent thinker and not like most women of that era. Whether she loved him or not, it was her hair and it shouldn't have changed anything between them. It's just hair after all. Thanks for this video! Really interesting.

Brian Rebmann: Excellent video as always which I found informative and entertaining. I never knew Lucy was wearing a wig. Thank you for a great video. Keep up the great work

Therese Catalano: I knew Lucy wore wigs later in her life and they would pull her skin back for the temporary facelift but I didn’t realize she did in this particular episode. I thought that started with the Lucy Show! I definitely didn’t think there were multiple wigs! Interesting Lucy didn’t cut her hair because of Desi, but on the other hand while their marriage was not in a good place at this time, she still wasn’t ready to end it.

Howard Stern: Love, love, LOVE this! You are great! Yes, this episode was definitely for the movie "Mad, Mad World" a few years later. Keep up the good work; glad i found you!

HRHPaula: I knew she wore a wig (and on this episode) but just thought it was styled slightly differently throughout the segment. It DID lift her whole face up, in my opinion, giving her a more youthful appearance. I personally liked it without the wig, but she never asked my opinion!!

Randy Allamon: Very good content, as always, and you're extremely appealing to listen to. Good job!

Trotterhorse Watson Jr.: It was not noticeable, irma did a good job!!

DWK SF BAY AREA: I knew she wore wigs! I never questioned why. She continues to wear wigs off and in throughout her next two Lucy show series!

Kevin Eaton: I never liked Lucy’s short hair. I think it aged her 10 years.

Chris Canale: I Love Lucy ❤️ I never knew she wore several wigs. Great video Rick

Eloise Ockert: I didn"t think much about Lucy's hair style. I really didn't notice this until pointed out. The shorter style, however, did show her full face & in my opinion showed up how very attractive she was. ... Great rrview Rick as usual. E

Trevor Thompson: I love her wigs on The Lucy Show/Here's Lucy. She looked fabulous!

Jon S.: In the later episode about her getting a job it was ironic that she pulled out a rubber band to try to make her shorter hair into a ponytail style again! I didn't know this was a wig either and knew she eventually changed her style! I also read that for The Lucy Show they would pin wiglets to her own hair to achieve that "cake head" look of Lucy Carmichael!

Neil Dickson: Desi was such a macho latin lover. Since they divorced shortly after this, she didn't have to secretly keep it long for long. Having just watched 'The Fuller Brush Lady' released in 1950, Lucy's forehead was pretty creased, even in blurry b&w so the tape and braids are pretty obvious 10 years later. Or, a complete facelift. Many actresses did the tape, braids, most notably Marlene Dietrich.

Dive Bar Casanova: We saw her once in Hollywood (shopping with Vera Felton) in the early 60's. My mom referred her look as "Peaches and Cream."

Hawkwind Droneworks: I'm a boomer. The fact that Lucy wore wigs on the shows was both common knowledge and a constant butt of jokes whenever she did variety shows at the time. "Stretch wigs" for women, so called because they were woven on mesh elastic caps, were popular in general at the time. This short curly style became Lucy's iconic look

KatherineDancingLlamas D: Rick I totally love your channel!!! Why don't I remember this episode? I've gotta look it up!

Lucia Taylor: Really enjoy your videos man! I think it's so cool you take such an interest in old TV! Keep up the good work!

fuzzy 68: I was like you. I did not know she wore wigs. I always thought that with her real hair. I always noticed that there was something different with her hair all the time. but I always thought that was her natural hair. thanks for pointing it out. now I watch different episodes this to see. thanks

Immortalsouls_Death_in_Reverse: this one of my favorite episodes which i didnt know myself that she wore wigs for that play. shes actually looked pretty good with that short hair made her more looking younger though

Robert Shaw IV: I didn’t know about the wigs until I saw this video. Great information!

Brent Edwards: Irma was a brilliant wig maker from Studio days....she made them all. In Critic's Choice with Bob Hope, she made 5-6 wigs.... varied styles....60s hair dos....

ruben cohen: The cast of I Love Lucy are all on the other side making new episodes of the television show. I can't wait to see it and meet them on the other side. ❤

Miklos Ernoehazy: ...keep in mind folks that Fred McMurray was a HUGE big name movie star at the time... ... getting him to do a television episode was quite a feat and an accomplishment for Desilu Studios (movie stars just did not do television, unless it was a special event)... ...in fact, when Fred McMurray went on to do "My Three Sons" one of his conditions was that all of his scenes for the week's episode had to be shot in one day out of the whole week's shooting schedule... ...being a big-name star he could make such a demand; work one day out of the week... ... that's how "My Three Sons" got Fred McMurray to do the show, he only had to work one day out of the week...

zaxxon4: I always wondered why she appeared to age so much in the 5 years between I Love Lucy and The Lucy Show. This would certainly explain it.

Jose: Thanks for posting this. I always thought Lucy aged by these episodes. She looked older than Ethel by the end.

Up The Down Escalator: I didn't know, but I adore her short hair. She looks less childish and more classy

Mike S: No, I didn't know that. I like my wife's hair long, too, like it was when we met. These days, she wears it shorter, as it's easier to maintain. How could I object? Anyway, their lives revolved around Hollywood, where nothing is as it appears.

Don Nicholas: Wow! I never saw this episode before! To me, Lucy looks weird with short hair. :-O

Zee: Lucille wore wigs pretty exclusively after this point. It wasn't until the early 89's that she accepted her age and started using her own hair again.

Jus Me: Fun episode. I knew Lucy wore wigs in her last feature film Mame. She didbthe same techniques to hide her wrinkles and she looked gorgeous. I didnt like the wig she wore in this episode. Her narural hair was lovely to me.

Scott LaBissoniere: Who knew? This was a fun episode. Thanks Rick!!

Gregg Watkins Jr.: I didn't know it was a wig, I always thought it was her new hairstyle. Anyway I always like the Fred McMurray episode, wonder if this was the First time that William Frawley work with him before doing My Three Sons?

Raven Poe: I never really got into the Comedy Hour shows even tho i did see quite a bit of them at least once and remember this episode...maybe it was the hair that threw me off but didn’t know why . The whole story tho reminds me of the “Italian wig” episode and how Ricky wouldn’t let Lucy cut her hair....so guess that really was a Desi and Lucy thing. . Btw i like how u pronounced Irma even tho the real lady probably did use the English pronunciation

SunSlice: I didn't know about the wigs!! But whenever I watched the episode, I knew something was different with lucy's hair. I just didn't know what it was. Thanks for the information!!

Marina Zagrai: To wear her hair long because Desi liked it? Obviously, I don't agree with that! Her biggest regret was that he had a roving eye, and nothing, but nothing would stop him from going after other women even if she had hair to her knees! I can't believe that her being such an independent person would allow him to dictate how her hair should look (he, being a Latino, didn't want other men looking at her).

YoopCat: I had no idea she was wearing wigs for that look. It was a cute look but I agree that it did age her a bit.

Indigo Wolf: Wow! Never knew about her wig. I'm guessing that it was not only for that hour long episode but maybe for the other hour long episodes and shows as well? And after she got divorced from Desi did she chose decide to cut her hair? Because if you notice in the Lucy shows that followed her hair was more styled with that time. As of course the clothing was also. I have only seen a few of the hour long episodes hundreds of years ago and didn't like them may feel different about them now. I will always be a fan of the I Love Lucy shows no matter what. This was really interesting to know where I can and I appreciate you doing little things like this. Thank you so very very much.

coolnegative: No idea about the wings. You mentioned "Rat Race," Lucy would have made a wonderful addition to "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World!"

Ricky N: I don’t know she wore wigs. I like her hair the original’I Love Lucy’ series.

HFVidShotz: Interesting. The short hair was not a good look for her. Thanks Rick!

MGTOW P.L.: I Never Ever Knew That Lucille Ball Wore Any Wings At All. That Is New To Me.. Thank You For Sharing..

Joseph Panzarella: I make a distinction between "I Love Lucy" and "The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour". They may have had the same basic cast but they weren't the same.

Buff Barnaby: Lucy is listening to a walkman !

RA28: Ironic to see Fred Macmurray on I love Lucy and stand next to Fred Mertz (William Frawley).......little did they realize just a couple years after that, they would both be starring together in My Three Sons.

mrgreengenes04: I did know about the lift wigs. Eva Gabor had a similar wig/lift set up on Green Acres.

Robert Telarket: Apparently she was doing everything possibly to keep the marriage going and resisted cutting her hair the desired long length Desi and other Latin men's preference.

Lady Agnes: I never knew this! I liked her longer hair.

MsBackstager: Didn't she have little facial "lifts" inside her wigs?

Daniel Prohoroff: This is on of my favorite episode from the hour long series

Courtney: Had no clue! My fav was always the way it was in the first season.

abram galler: I didn't know the number of wigs .Wigs are not long-lasting so remembering how many is a surprise to me .

Melissa Struxness: Never knew. Her hair was never that long. . . did she wear a wig in the earlier. 1/2 hour shows?

Jeff Walsh: They needed to get Fred a wig, lol!!!

Max Stax: The summer of 68 my family, six of us, all piled into a car and drove from Kansas to California mainly to visit Disneyland. One day we got one of those maps and were driving around to see the movie star homes. We stopped in front of Fred MacMurray's house and then a car pulled in the driveway and out hopped Fred MacMurray and walked straight to our car, he asked where we were from and how we liked California. He was really friendly and nice.

larry potter: I hate to say this, Rick, but to me, probably not to everyone, I could spot the wigs on this episode. Didn't know however, it was three different ones though. Personally, in my opinion, she should have stuck to her natural long hair. This episode was memorable to me because of Fred MacMurray, who was the Dad I never had. Loved his movies, and as you pointed out this episode was unique, and one unique part I will mention, you probably already know, was this was the first time Fred worked with William Frawley, at least on TV. Frawley later starred with Fred in the My Three Son's TV series as Bub O'Casey, Steve Douglas's father in-law and grandfather to the three sons. This is where I adopted the feeling of Fred as the best fictional TV dad, in my opinion. Plus the Disney movie Follow Me Boys also gave me that close feeling. Sorry. I kinda plugged that in case you never do a My Three Sons review.

Janine Harrison: I just thought she wanted a fresh hair cut

Finding by W.D.F.: At least one of these wigs still survives. Just can't remember who owns it.

Norma C.: Wow! I didn't know about the wigs!! Interesting fact!

BeJoyful: My favourite hair style was the 1950s; didn't like the 'articoke' 1960s style that her hairdresser named. Why would Lucy listen to Desi since they were divorced them about cutting her hair and reminds me of the Black Wig episode? Still very interesting wig story as I never would have imagined Lucy would care for them; fan of Fred MacMurray too. Rick, I had a thought about the door in the first kitchen set; perhaps it was a broom closet?

Robert Novoa: I guess the hair looks kind of stiff and unnatural here, so probably her own natural hair would have looked best long or short. So but now I wonder in those reruns that they show as Miss Carmichael The Lucy Show, her being older_ are those wigs as well? Sometimes her hair looks pretty red and sometimes it looks not so red almost blondish red or strawberry blond, but always short I think sometimes she had her hair up in a bun maybe that was her natural hair at times?

OK Joe: Lucy wore a wig for the rest of her time on TV and movies. There are some candid shots of her where she has her own hair.
