How To Make A Wig | Part Three: Knotting Hair And Fitting A Wig

The final stage of making a wig is adding the hair. The National Theatre's Wigs, Hair and Make-up department knot each individual strand of hair into their bespoke wigs. It can take anything between 35 and 45 hours to knot a full wig. Once the wig is complete, it then needs to be fitted to the actor's head - then it's ready to go on stage.

Wig-maker Leanne Lashbrook walks you through this process step-by-step.

The drawing mats are to mats with claws in and they hold the hair to stop it tangling. When you pull it, the hair needs to go in with the roots facing the person knotting and the claws facing backwards. The block sits in a special box called a cradle so that it sits nicely. We draw the hair out in small bunches and then we fold it in a short loop and dip it in some water which helps keep the knots tight. When you pull it. The hair needs to be knotted into the wig, with the roots at the top, as it would have been cut from the person's head. If it's the wrong way round or mixed up, it will Matt untangle and the wig won't be any use. The hook goes through. The lace catches some hair from the loop pulls it back through loops around forms the knot, and then you pull it through and it tightens as you pull knotting and full wig is somewhere between 35 or 45 hours. It does entirely depend on, what's required, of the wig the weight of the wig, the length of the wig, the texture of the hair can affect how long it takes when a wigs ready for a show on a daily basis. It will be cleaned and blocked and styled during the fit in the extra front. Lace has trimmed down to a comfortable length for the actor or in relation to how close the audience might be. We use fine straight pins to secure wigs to the actors head if they can't have too many pins, then we'll glue it as well.
