I get a ton of dms from people who can't get their hair to stay clean for days. It just stays flat and greasy, which makes it really hard to style or work with they're wondering if it's them or their shampoo and if they're always going to be stuck being a slave to greasy hair. And luckily the answer is no. Even the greasiest hair can stay fresh and clean for days. You just need the right washing technique and the right shampoo, but first i need to tell you a story about my salon: co-founder leslie who's able to easily go at least seven days between washes whenever leslie told one of her friends that she was able to go. Seven days her friend would get all grossed out her friends like. Oh, i could only go one or two days. That'S gross! I don't know how you can go seven days between washes. Well, guess what the joke was on her, because a couple weeks later, she came into the salon to get her hair done by us, including the wash she texted us the next week. She was able to go five days between washes and it completely opened her mind. She was able to go from washing every one to two days to washing every five days, changing nothing else than her technique and her shampoo and the sneaky thing here is that she really thought she was doing a good job when she was only able to go One or two days between washes a lot of us think that so today, i'm going to show you the exact same washing technique that i trained all my stylists on. This is the exact same technique that got her from one to two days to five days. It'S actually really simple: it's not hard at all, so, let's get into it. So, let's start from the very beginning, it all starts with how you apply your shampoo to your scalp and, yes, i said scalp intentionally and not hair. You never want to apply shampoo directly to the hair. Your aim should be applied directly to the scalp. Yes, it'll get on your hair. That'S totally fine! It'S actually a good thing, but really your focus should be applying it to your scalp. That'S because the scalp is where the oil comes from. Your hair does not produce oil at all. Ever the scalp produces the oil, and then it gets onto the hair. Knowing that you should never directly apply shampoo to your mids or ends it'll just dry them out and make them feel terrible. So don't do that to correctly apply shampoo to your scalp. You want to spread it out evenly and i don't mean put a big lob on there, put it on top and then try and spread it out. That'S not what you do. There'S actually a strategy to this and we're going to focus on the toughest part of your hair to get clean first, the hair on the top back of your head is really really dense, which makes it really easy for oil to hide in there. So to apply your shampoo you're, going to put it in your hand. First then, you're going to take just a little bit, with your other hand, spread the hair apart in the back and then put the shampoo right up on there on the scalp, not on the hair on the scalp as much as possible, then you're gon na take The rest of your shampoo spread it out on your hands a little bit: you're, not emulsifying. It you're, not lathering it you're just spreading it out. Then you're going to put it on the sides of your head, starting about an inch back from the hairline. Just like that, then there should still be some left on your hands. You'Re, going to spread it again, just a little bit go over the top of your head again about an inch from the hairline and then whatever is left at that point. You'Re going to put in the very back above the nape of your neck and then you're good. Now this is the most important part, and this is where people tend to get off track. But it's super important to do this right. You really need to scrub, and by scrub i don't mean this palming thing where you're just smearing the shampoo. On top of your hair, you need to get to the scalp, so don't use your palms use your fingertips and press in a little bit. This is not a super gentle thing. Imagine you spilled olive oil over your hands, a little bit of water and a little bit of soap. Just la la la isn't going to get it. You need to get in there to remove the oil. On the other side, you don't need to be super rough. You shouldn't irritate your scalp. You shouldn't use your nails. You just want to press into it almost like you're, giving a head massage the best way to do. That is with a back and forth motion. Remember, to use your fingertips, not your palms and start in the back of your head back and forth back and forth and make sure you don't miss anything, make sure to get your sides really well and make sure to get the nape of your neck really well. As well now, at this point, it's really important to get lather and suds and also to understand how they work and what they are. Lather and suds are the white bubbles that appear when you start rubbing. Your shampoo in i use those two terms interchangeably, but they're. The same thing, suds and lather are just the white bubbles. The reason they're so important is because they are the indicator of whether your hair is clean or not whether you need to keep shampooing or not. Why is that? Because, as long as the shampoo is neutralizing, the oil and buildup in your hair, they will not produce any suds. Suds and lather are only produced when your shampoo can't find any more oil or buildup to bind to. So that means that if you're getting lots of suds and lots of lather, your hair is clean. If you're not getting suds, if you're not getting lather, then your hair is still dirty. You need to keep going if this is the first time you're washing like this. Don'T worry if you're not getting suds very easily, it's probably because you have a lot of oil and buildup in your hair. The shampoo is taken care of, so you may need to do two, or maybe even three washes. This is the first time getting it all. The way clean now there's one caveat for using suds as your indicator of whether your hair is clean or not, and that's that it only works with professional shampoo. The lady who is eventually able to go five days but started out going only one or two days between washes was it one or two days, because she was using cheap shampoos. She found at target. They do not get hair clean. You can literally wash your hair 10 times in a row with a target shampoo and will not get your hair clean to cover up that fact. They put in fragrances and these extra special ingredients to produce fake suds that way as soon as you start rubbing it in you get all these suds, even when it's not clean. That makes you think that your hair is clean and you did a good job, but then you're left wondering why can i only go one or two days between washes because you use a cheap shampoo with fake suds? Never get your shampoo at target use a professional shampoo that'll, get you way further, we'll talk about shampoo at the end of the video, and i have a really easy way for you to find a great shampoo for you. So for now we're just gon na focus on the technique. Right now, the end of the video i'll show you the perfect, shampoo, okay. So now that we know suds and lather only appear when there's no more oil or buildup for the shampoo to bind to, we can use that to our advantage. Usually when you wash your hair you'll get some suds, but not a ton. And if that's the case, there's still oil in your hair, it is not clean yet and you're not going to be able to go very long before your next wash. If you stop washing there and just move on to conditioner, this is kind of like one bad apple spoils a bunch. A little bit of oil in your hair will make all of your hair gross. That'S why ninety percent of people need to do a second wash, because on the second wash the suds will come very easy. You'Ll get all the oil out you'll be able to go much longer before your next wash. If you look at this clip of leslie, this is what you really want see how many suds are in there. That'S how you know the hair is all the way clean. So again, almost everyone should be doing two washes. If one wash gets your hair all the way clean, you probably aren't going long enough between washes, which will affect the health of your hair. Another note about suds and lather is that some people give you advice to cheat. They say, get a ton of suds and a ton of lather in your hands and then put it on your hair. The problem with that is, it's the same as spraying yourself with water, making it look like you, sweat and then coming in saying, oh guys, i just wanted a five mile run man. It was so hard. Let me tell you making it look like you went on a five mile run is not the same as going on a five mile run. Making it look like you did a really good job. Shampooing is not the same as actually doing a good job shampooing and it's pretty silly because of course you can get a ton of suds on your hands. There'S no oil in your hands, the oil's on your scalp, so the thing is suds only count if they're produced on your scalp, they don't count if they're produced on your hands where there's no oil. I also want to talk about how different everyone is. Not everyone should or can go the same amount of days between washes. Just because my co-founder leslie can go seven days does not mean you should most people just can't do that number one she's, an expert in maintenance she's been doing this for years and number two. She has me washing and styling her hair for every week, so it's really not a fair comparison. The amount of days you should go between washes depends on your hair type. So, let's go through exactly how long each hair type should go between washes. If you have fine hair that struggles with oil, you should shoot for washing your hair every three days. If you can get there you're good, if you can push to four days, you are a champion. If you have medium hair, you should shoot for washing every five days, most likely you're gon na get stuck at four for a while. But then, hopefully, as you get used to a routine, is using dry, shampoo you'll eventually be able to push it to five. So, four or five days for medium hair, if you have coarse hair, you should shoot for washing your hair every seven days. The reason for that is, your scalp is naturally dry. You should take advantage of that. If you wash your hair any more frequently, it's just gon na dry it out and also don't let anyone else make you feel bad for how long you go between washes everyone's different. It doesn't really matter, go buy your hair type, not anything else. One thing that can help every hair type go longer between washes is clarifying shampoo. So if you're looking to optimize your routine check out this video on clarifying shampoo earlier in the video, i promised you that i would help you find the perfect shampoo and i actually have an entire video for that. It'S called the top five shampoos of 2022 and you can watch it right up here so by now you should have a really great idea of how you can go longer between washes and exactly how to shampoo your hair. All you have to do now is put this into practice. It may take a couple experiments. It may take you a couple weeks to really dial it in, but that's totally fine and totally normal. If you learn anything, please do me a huge favor and hit follow that way. More people can find this, and if you have a question, leave a comment below and i'll make sure to get back to. You have a good one. You

kikimckay: I'd love for you to do a video about how to keep your hair fresh after a workout and/or how to best get rid of the ponytail bump! I work out 4-5 days a week and I want to do better with my hair maintenance, but don't want to do more damage. Thanks!

ClinicalNarcissism: I'm also one of those women that apparently don't know how to wash their hair. Went out and bought the redkin volume shampoo and conditioner you suggest for fine hair, as well as following the rest of the routine you suggested and OMG I noticed a difference immediately and how my hair felt and looked. Now I'm binge watching all of your videos so I can feel like a pro. But seriously, PLEASE do a video on conditioner because I'm probably doing that wrong too.

Happy Sheep: Just tried your routine with the shampoo you recommended and at the first wash I didn’t get any suds. Then I washed it again like you said and THERE WERE SO MANY SUDS OMG IT WAS FOAMING. I was literary mind blown and my hair feels so freaking clean. Thank you so much, Chris! Pls make a video for conditioner because now I don’t know if I’m doing that right

Emily V: I’ve been doing this exact technique for years and it truly works! I last 5-7 days between washes if I don’t work out and sweat profusely. I always think thought it was strange my first wash would have no suds, but the second is when everything really foams up. So good to know that’s normal! Love your videos Chris, keep it up!

Keapix: This was really informative and interesting, thanks. I definitely need to up my washing game. What are your thoughts on the Ouai shampoo for fine hair?

Emilia B: This is how I’ve been washing my hair for some years, glad to know I am not that clueless lol. Before I washed this way I always found that I had some residue and even a smell, until I started actually scrubbing and applying it directly to the scalp. I like your content, it’s well explained and to the point. New subscriber!

Kornelia Waszak: I have thin hair and can go 4 days without washing it I honestly thought it wasn’t much but this video made me feel better thank you for the awesome advice

Sophie Jones: Wow! I’m so glad I found your channel. I’ve binged watched all you videos and learnt so much. I’ve even recommend you channel to my friends. You are amazing and you’ve changed so many peoples hair game. THANK YOU

luckyDancer100: Totally agree about back and forth motion. Helps with tangles. But I’m not nearly patient enough to apply shampoo the way he describes. I apply whatever’s in my palms to my whole head and then lather in sections.

Lexi Jones: I can tell you right now( and I LOVE your channel.). There is no way I will ever be able to go anything past every other day. NOTHING will change it. My mom is a hairdresser. I grew up with great products on Biolage and Redken twenty years ago. I’m too oily even at my age. I never have done anything less than two washes.

Narayani Ji: Hi Chris, I have fine, wavy, bleached-blond hair that gets frizzy. My 2 big issues are: 1) trying to reduce frizz without weighing my hair down. 2) I am sensitive to artificial perfumes. Can you help me know which products I should use? ( the pureology strength cure was a miracle for my hair, but I got headaches from the perfume and can't use it. Ugh! Help!)

Mia: I would love to see a video on how to detangle hair (wet vs dry?) and which tools are best to avoid breakage, combs, brushes etc

Molly Navarro: Omgosh I’ve been washing my mids and ends with shampoo! No wonder, my hair feels so dry after I wash and blow dry it. I’ve been using olaplex and my hair feels a lot healthier. I usually shampoo twice since I only wash it once a week. I’m going to try only wash my roots next week when I wash my hair. Thank you.

aly winter: My issue is that I have a very sensitive and irritable scalp - so on day 2 after washing, I start to feel itchy - and if I leave it till day 3… it’s unbearably itchy (no dandruff btw, just itchiness from the oils sitting on my scalp). Dry shampoo tends to make the itching much worse. So I try to at least do 2 days between washes for my fine hair. Is there any way I can protect my hair while still appeasing my scalp that needs to be clean?

anony mouse: I have coarse relaxed hair. One thing I learned living in the girl's dorm and swapping hair stories: Hair like mine should not be squeaky clean. It's so hard to keep any oil on our hair/scalp that we add moisture and/or oils sometimes daily. If you make your hair squeaky clean you've stripped it and probably harmed it. Clean that scalp like crazy; the extra shampoo running over the hair will probably take care of cleansing it.

Gigi Royal: Thank you Chris. Another wonderful video. You changed the way I wash my hair. Please make a video how to apply the conditioner and the leave in conditioner ( ordered it after watching you). Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge with us.

SurgicalTech Crafter: I literally use to wash my hair daily when I was young now I can wash mine once a week in my 50s. Love not being a slave to my hair.

Aude Combes: Hi Chris, thanks for your awesome videos. I’m swimming 3-4 times a week, how should I take care of my hair (long & fine) ? I don’t know which shampoo I should use that could remove the chlorine and be gentle for my hair. That also prevent me from trying to go more than 2 days without shampooing, but I can’t imagine just rinsing my hair. Any tips for us swimmers ?

Kirsten and Josh Tucker: My hair type is fine, and I do produce quite a bit of oil. With that being said, I've trained my hair to go 1 week between washes with your help! My question is - am I doing more damage because of this?!

Michelle Rau: Do you have any dry shampoos that you could recommend? I find that dry shampoo can irritate my scalp which makes it harder to extend washes... thanks for the video :)

Latifx3: Thanks for the tips! I've been struggling for years with the back of my head being oily and itchy. Turns out I just need to change how I'm washing my hair

Rebecca W: Hi ! The leave in conditioner you recommended just doesn’t work on my hair. I think it’s the coconut. What is your second and third choices for a leave in ?

Yesenia Cazares: This makes so much sense! Can’t wait to try

Jenny Sadaka: How do I maintain longer durations between washes when going to the gym 4-5 days? My hair is naturally curly, and though I follow your recommendations for heat styling, sweat is a force of its own.

Cheryl Oslund: Chris, you are so helpful! Thank you! Do you have a second recommendation for dry shampoo for fine hair? The pulp riot is sold out everywhere!

Siri Explore the World: Thank you very much for your recommendations! I live in Thailand, with the humidity and working out, I didn't think my medium hair can last 5 days! But I worked! Why no one teaches this in school!

Proto Man: I shampoo 3x week but with different shampoos. 1 regular shampoo from Hempz. Another detox shampoo and finally a purple shampoo for brass. Not all at once but throughout the week

laura h: Used to wash my hair everyday as it was sooooooo greasy! Lockdown come and I decided I didn't care if my hair was greasy, now I was my hair once a week easily, and even on wash day my hair is nowhere near as greasy as it was after one day !! Also my hair is super fine. So if I can do it believe me people you can

Laura: Is the second wash actually necessary to remove the remaining oil or more as a proof that all of the oil has been removed?

Lezlie R.: What do you feel about people who don’t wash everyday but they wet hair and just use conditioner? I feel like this go 3 days without washing only works well for people with longer or thicker hair. I have fine wavy/curly/frizz prone hair (and less of it now that I’m 50ish) but it’s on the shorter side with some layers so when I sleep it’s sticking up all over. I won’t do anything with my hair when I’m working from home and not going anywhere but if I do go out then often I wash with conditioner and then let air dry wavy or style.

Be Healing: I workout every day and live in the tropics. My head sweats so my hair is dripping wet by the end of my workout salty sweat. I have fine hair. I wash everyday. It would be really gross not to. But I will use these techniques to wash for sure and I always use professional products and lots of masks to keep my hair in good condition

Bianca Munsami: Absolutely informative....thanks Chris❤

Ella Who?: At the moment in Germany it is soooo hot, I have to wash my hair more often because of the sweat. It annoyes me so much, but when I sweat so much, my hair is disgusting. Normally I wash my hair 2 times a week and it is perfect for me. The only thing on hot summer is my wet hair at the evening

Kimberley Fredricks: I do use professional shampoo but I also use hair products. No one ever addresses these kinds of videos for people that use product. If I try to go more than two days without washing my hair feels gross add it looks really bad. Also, dry shampoo makes it worse. These routines generally only work for people that have moderately healthy hair and don’t use any kind of styling product.

The Akrádî: Okay. I’m 3 days without shampoo for the first time since I can remember and I’m already seeing results holy s#^%$! Leaves me wondering though, what do I do about my hair clay? I use a water based hair clay in my hair on a daily basis, should I just rinse it out with water everyday ?

adriana mckean: I "shampoo" about every 3-5 days (I'm a hiker, paddleboard, and workout 5 days a week, so it varies) but I sometimes "rinse" my scalp with water while I shower especially after a very sweaty workout or getting my hair wet in a lake/river. Is this negating the benefits of me only shampooing every 3-5days? In other ways does wetting or rinsing your hair/scalp whether you shampoo or not damaging to your hair?

Gayle Sallee: I had surgery on my head some months back so some of my hair was cut off I also noted that I was losing hair in different parts of my head . I have been using Nioxin shampoo, conditioner and serum it is really drying my hair out and I am not seeing a lot of results. Any suggestions?

Alita: Does this technique apply when using clarifying shampoo? And how often should I use it? I got OUAI detox

Playing Games95: Could you do a (short) video on conditioner? Should I apply it from the roots or the middle?

Ingrid Khajeh: What is your opinion on shampoo brushes? I recently bought a good one and find it massagesthe shampoo really well into the scalp.

jonamic: Are the shampoos you mentioned here ideal for colour-treated hair?

chara: Thank you for the video! I would like to have your opinion on 1. Hair oiling (with argan oil/coconut oil etc) before washing 2. Hair keratin straightening therapies, whether it's healthy or not for hair longterm

Sophia: I do the thing where you get a ton of suds and lather on your hands then put it in your hair I’ll be trying your techniques, thank you !!

Tara Lathinghouse: Can you please do a video on nighttime hair routine..such as pillowcases- does it matter? Fo straight hair that you say should go three days between flat ironing - wear. Hear down for bed? Or up? Long medium naturally straight hair

Melli Mon: I got shampoo from function of beauty and I need to wash my hair everyday due a condition there. They recommend washing twice actually bc the first is getting rid of everything and second is getting the benefits in the sculp. Now, after watching your video, I am questioning that. BUT I got short hair so... it still is just a bead of shampoo for my hair. I can use my little bottle of 236ml for a whole year

Tonya Cordell: How do I properly apply conditioner? Do I apply it all over? Do you have a video on that?

Xtina: What about purple shampoo? I have platinum blonde hair and need it all covered with the shampoo lol i use the olaplex purple one and it really dries out my hair but makes my blonde bright. Doesn't really lather tho

Stephanie Weingarten: I have really oily skin and my skalp is oily as well due to my hormones (I got that checked). I have to wash my hair every two days because of that condition or else there’s an oil fest going on I used to wash my hair every day and your method got me to every two days. I’m working on every three days but it’s tricky when I’m doing lots of sports on top of my oil problem.

Kay Tom: I have thin fine hair. Would you say every 3rd day to wash hair. I tried to go longer but it gets very oily and itchy…. If I do every 3rd day and use the techniques to prevent from damage will my hair still be protected if I wash 2-3 times a week? Thank you

Peaceful Place: I tried this technique with the Nioxin shampoo (used it for over 3 years for my fine hair, don't want to swtich), and I DIDNT KNOW IT LATHERS! Thank you)))

Nabiela Ragooloo: Hi, Chris. What is your opinion on the milkshake brand of haircare ? I'd love to hear your thoughts!

kiwibirder: I just received your fine hair box (shampoo, conditioner, leave-in conditioner and hair oil), and I am going to see if I can stop washing my hair every single day, which I’ve been doing my entire life. Now that I’m 53, have had some medical issues and am post-menopause, my fine hair breaks SO easily that I have a halo of broken hairs all around my head, which I hate. I have fairly long hair, and it also tangles very easily, which it never did when I was younger. I am hoping that using all your recommended products and washing my hair less often will help. Thank you so much for all the fantastic advice!

Alita: I was advised to wash my hair every 4 to 5 days regardless of the greasy appearance. So my question is how healthy is it for hair to remain greasy? Because I also read that letting your scalp be oily for a while can clog the follicles and lead to thinning hair. Please advise me on this since it is very confusing are you are the only honest her stylist around LOL

Jonathan Matthew: How do you know if you have oily or dry hair or scalp? (For men with short hair)

Kandice Polut: BUT….. what about us short haired girls that use pomade and styling products?! Do we rinse between washes? If so do we blow dry it again? I seriously need a video on all these issues, PRETTY PLEASE!!!

TRINA LE: So you’re saying we should be shampooing our hair twice every time we wash it ?

Oliveira S.: Could you do a tutorial for long fine curly hair, when I wake up in den morning my hair is so frizzy an tangled, I have to wash it. If not its very hard to detangle then after. Have a lot of hair, but very fine.

Kathryn Arguinzoni: Is Tresemme a good shampoo to use?? That what I'm currently using at the moment.

Jan McMahon: I have very fine short hair. I can easily go three days between washes Because my hair is so baby fine I use a fair amount of styling products. I only use heat every 3rd day. I use the Redken products you recommend. The reason I wash every third day is because my hair starts to get a bit crunchy which feels like it will break off on the third day. How do I avoid the crunchies and yet have full voluminous hair? I use Redken hot sets, big blowout cream and their hairspray Sometime I add a bit of paste\wax

thegrkgirl: What do you believe in the best shampoo and conditioner for curly hair??

Debbie Debeaux: Quick question, is Nexxus considered a professional product? I use to see it everywhere and I believe my hair loves it (Nexxus Therappe Shampoo and Nexxus Humectress Conditioner) as I recently started using it again.

Laura: Thanks for the great video!! :)

Stephanie: Is there a video on how to properly use conditioner?

ashleydanc3rr54: I use Biolage advanced full density, I have thin oily hair! My hair dresser uses Biolage that’s why I started using it as well, but I noticed it is not on your list on shampoos and to use… is it not a good choice?!

Lydia Orcales: I was told that salon brands sold at stores like target or Walmart as examples, are not salon quality. They’re different from what professionals sell. Is this true?

Avi Henriksen: a lot of your advice feels like it's for people with long hair; what about people with short hair? (for reference, my longest hair still isn't even as long as my fingers) is the advice different then?

Kaffhocker: You don't recommend latherin' up the shampoo in the palms. I get that. But what's our opinion on diluting the shampoo with water appr. 1:10? I think it makes it very liquid and thorougly poured over the head it will find the scalp no matter how thick the hair is.

JustJordan13 B: I LOVE THIS MAN❤️

Chris Jones: Is this different for fine, low volume curly hair?

Nadav Masa: Sorry if this is a dumb question. What about a buzz cut, can I shampoo every day, or should i still aim to shampoo every few days ? And what about conditioner, should i still use it after i shampoo my head or this stuff doesn’t matter if i have a buzz cut?

Toke C: What if I work out etc? Can I then still go 4 days?

Priyanka Pargaonkar: Can I use Giovanni silk shampoo and conditioner? It says Salon quality.

Kianna Vaz: Ok. I see Im doing It right, but the drugstore shampoo of backfiring at me.. I saw your redken recommendation for fine hair ..any suggestion for sensitive scalp?

Beepbeep: Does clarifying shampoo strip toner?

Maggy Handy: What do you think about shampoo brushes?

anthony gilliam: so basically shampoo is degreaser and conditioner is where the real money is at.

Dodo: Can you please make a video of how to get rid of dandruff?

Hannah Adams: What about for purple shampoo? I use 2 shampoos, one to clean my hair then my purple shampoo to tone my hair

lulu07: Hey Chris, I wonder what do you think about It's a 10 products?

MY GAMING ZONE: how should males use shampoo on short hairs ??

Jasmine Mitchell: hi what's your opinion on Keracare hydrating detangling shampoo & design essentials honey creme moisture retention shampoo?

Wanda Arnt: Thank You cheers from Pennsylvania Blessings

rebecca shaw: Hi. Just started watching a channel and now I make sure to watch it first. I just read to emulsify the shampoo in your hands. Now I should separate the scalp scalp? I’m going to have to watch this again. I’m going to watch the other videos that you pointed to but I haven’t yet. I didn’t buy all of Plex for See. I am accustomed to using shame oyster blah blah blah blah blah. There were a lot of words after it sorry. Definitely not a clarifying shampoo. I have so many dry shampoos I should start using them right? I was afraid they were gonna dry out my hair. I have so many because it seems like a good idea. Anyway have a pleasant day or evening or I don’t know where you are I’m sorry.

Patty Castro: What do you recommend to was kids hair?

Ally235G: If the shampoo has no sulfate will you still see suds?

Old English Sheepdog Fun: Shampoo brush ?????

Martha Hench: Washing is for Landry. We shampoo
