Rich in moisturizing or lighting cleansing make the perfect shampoo for your hair today we're making real shampoos. So this is a tutorial that you don't want to miss hi guys welcome to whole elites, i'm elise and, as always, you can find the full recipes on my website. Hololease.Com, so let's just get straight into it. Our first shampoo is a sulfate free, clarifying shampoo that won't strip your hair. This shampoo is amazing, when you just need something that cleans your hair, if you use heavier products like gels, butters and hair grease. All of that can cause build up, so it is great to use a clarifying shampoo every now and again just to make sure that you're starting off with a clean base, a basic shampoo, has three main components: a water base, cleansing agent and a thickener, but that Can be a one-way street to dry ville, so using floral waters and hydrosouls will give our shampoo a moisturizing boost, as well as a lovely fragrance without having to use oils measure out your water base, i'm using lavender hydrosol, but you can use any that you'd like Or you can even make your own following my tutorial above a little goes a long way, so i'm also diluting this with water now to cleanse our hair and scalp we're using surface active agents or surfactants. For short, they work by attracting both water and all molecules. Therefore, allowing your shampoo to wash away dirt debris build up and excess oils, i'm using deco glucoside, which is my go-to mild natural surfactant that won't strip your hair. This cleanser is even used in baby products, so you can't get much milder than that. I explain more about surfactants here, so click the icon above for more information on natural cleansers and how to choose the right one for you, we're also going to use another surfactant, coco betaine. It boosts our shampoo's conditioning. Powers reduces irritation, but also creates a rich thick lava, so full disclosure for a really basic shampoo recipe. You can, of course, just use one surfactant, but if you love that rich and creamy lather, then you will need to use a secondary surfactant or foam booster and that's what the cocoa beaching does. We'Ll also need to measure out. Glycerin and guar gum guagan light. Xanthum is a natural thickener, but we're using it here more for its conditioning properties. It'S common for clarifying shampoos to cause knotting and tangles in our hair, because they don't have any conditioning elements mix, the guagam and the glycerin first together to make it easier to disperse evenly into the water mixture. Guagum is unique as it coats your coils, laying the cuticle flat and helping with detangling once the gua gum is mixed in. We can then add the surfactants pour in the decal glucoside and cocoa betaine and whisk we're actually making our shampoo by hand. So all you'll need is a regular whisk. You could use an immersion blender, but due to the surfactants it will foam, so i'd actually recommend skipping it. At this point, we've made a good shampoo, but it's not yet a great one, even though the mild surfactants used will make sure that the clarifying shampoos don't give us that unpleasant squeaky feeling, we can still add in a few more moisturizing elements to further protect our Hair by adding in active ingredients like botanical extracts, proteins, hemetons and vitamins. This gives your clarifying shampoo, some moisturizing capabilities. These are optional, but it also makes sure that the shampoo isn't too stripping on your hair ingredient. Number one is d-pemphenol, also known as vitamin b5. I give it a formal introduction in my diy, shoe moisture, deep conditioning tutorial so check that out by the link above for more information, but essentially it's a powerful conditioner, moisturizer and anti-static agent. That gives your hair that signature, sheen and bounce next up. We have protein. Also essential for strengthening damaged and weakened hair strands, but also draws moisture into your curls, increasing its elasticity, making it less vulnerable to dryness and breakage pour both of these into your shampoo base and mix thoroughly. Next up everyone's favorite part, preserving i'm using a broad spectrum. Preservative, that's going to protect your shampoo from mold bacteria and fungi. This is incredibly important, as the last thing you want to do is go through all of the effort of making a great shampoo only to see it decay in a matter of days. At this stage we can adjust the ph of our shampoo, for this you'll need some citric acid, which you can buy in most supermarkets to balance the ph. You can also use something like apple, cider, vinegar. In fact, i do this in my previous african black soap. Shampoo tutorial, the only difference is that citric acid is so much more potent because it's far more acidic than vinegar, meaning that you only need a tiny sprinkle. In order to balance your ph surfactants, soaps and other cleansers tend to have high ph values that make them effective cleansers, but also irritating to our skin. By adding in something acidic, we can change the ph so that it's more in line with our scalps we're adding such a small amount. It'S likely that it won't show up on most scales, so go slow and add citric acid bit by bit to make sure that you don't overdo it. A ph of around five to six is within good range for most shampoos, so you may have noticed, but our shampoo is still quite liquid to elevate this from a diy shampoo to the ultimate shampoo. We'Re going to need a couple ccs of thickness measure out. 0.5 percent xanthan gum, along with more glycerin guacam, is great for texture and conditioning, but i find it easier to thicken liquids with xanthan gum like before mix the xanthum with the glittering before adding it to our shampoo. You can always add more, but you can't take away to start with a small amount. First, natural gums can take a full 24 hours to thicken the liquid, so even if it seems a little on the thin side initially, it will continue to thicken. After it's had time to sit, pour the tantum into our shampoo and whisk fairly, and i mean thoroughly you want to make sure that there are absolutely no lumps once that's done. Wait a couple minutes and use a spoon to check that it's thickened, even though it's still runny, you can see that it's slightly thicker now wait some more just five minutes later and look at the difference stop here. I know it's tempting to add more. I myself have been down that road before, but it's not worth it for this formula. I'Ve only used 0.5 percent xanthan gum, and you can see that even though it's still liquid, it's definitely thickened. I'D say that you can go up to about one percent, but i definitely wouldn't recommend adding any more than that. The difference between point five and one percent xanthan gum is huge for those in the back. That still want to add more look. What happens when? I add just two tiny grams: more of phantom gum, not too bad right. Well, that is how it tricks you one hour later, and it looks like this pure slime. Many a shampoo have been lost to xantham's, cruel nature, so you've been warned, but when used right, you'll end up with this crystal clear, ultra silky, clarifying shampoo that gently cleans but doesn't strip your hair. Next up, we have a rich and moisturizing conditioning shampoo when it comes to natural hair using more conditioning and moisturizing shampoos are the best way to ensure that your hair isn't stripped of its natural oils. So this conditioning shampoo formula is perfect to use for a regular wash day to keep things simple. It has virtually the same base as the clarifying shampoo. So if you can make one, you can also make the other measure out the hydrosol and water deco glucoside cocoa. Butane, glycerin and guar gum like before mix the guagam and glycerin together before adding it to the water base. Next, add the decal glucoside and coco betaine to form the water phase of your shampoo and once everything's mixed together. Here'S where it starts to get interesting. So this is where injecting knowledge of your own hair will give you the best results. Ideally, you want to use whichever oil works best for your hair to get the most out of this moisture boost if it's jojoba argan oil, olive oil, castor oil, whatever it is, use that here measure out your oil, i'm using coconut oil and then to make sure That the oil mixes in with your shampoo and doesn't just sit on the top will need an emulsifier, but not just any emulsifier. The ultra slip and conditioning natural hair's best friends, btms emulsifying wax for added stabilization. It'S always a good idea to throw in a fatty alcohol, i'm using settle alcohol once everything's, measured out, add the coconut oil btms and settle alcohol to the heatproof container so that we can melt it down. This moisturizing shampoo is an emulsion, so we'll need to heat our water and all ingredients separately before combining them together over a low gentle heat melt until no solids remain and then whisk the molten oils into the shampoo base. Now this is usually where i'd reach. For my trusty immersion blender but, as i said before, it's actually easier to whisk this by hand to avoid the surfactants foaming too much whisk routinely as it cools to ensure that it's emulsified fully. After about five minutes, you should have a silky smooth, slightly thickened shampoo, like with the clarifying shampoo, adding in a couple extras like pamphenal, and protein will help to keep your hair at its best. I won't force you, but i'm just saying for me, the balance between being cleansing, but not overly drying is just right with these two shampoos, but it's a good idea to always test out a product first and do a patch test before applying it to your hair. At this point, we can add our preservatives notice, the s on the end of that you'll need to use a broad spectrum preservative like before, but also an antioxidant, because we added oils to make this a moisturizing shampoo check your ph and sprinkle. Some of that citric acid to bring your shampoo back to a well-seasoned, 5 ph range and after another good mix, you'll have this gorgeously smooth, ultra conditioning shampoo and now for some of those finishing shots. You'Ve been waiting for a little bit of patience pays off as both the clarifying and conditioning shampoos are noticeably thicker after a couple hours to create this super satisfying final texture. For me, the balance between being cleansing, but not overly drying, is just right with these two shampoos, but it's a good idea to always test out a product first and do a patch test before applying it to your hair. It'S always a good idea to test out just how stripping a shampoo is going to be before applying it to your hair, so a hack that i've been doing for a while now is to actually wash my hands with the shampoo. Now that might sound weird. But if you get that overly drying filling on your hands, then that's a pretty good indicator that the shampoo is going to be too stripping on your hair. WholeElise: Whether you like deep cleansing or gentle washes - these shampoo recipes are the perfect addition to your natural hair routine! Full recipes here https://wholeelise.com/blog/how-to-make-natural-shampoo/

George Parker: I love the way you are clearly talking to us not dictating, you explain the science without talking above us. You can tell us how to do it in a friendly way without being guttural. There is a gentle kindness and caring in your manner of speech with a total absence of arrogance that is very refreshing (qualities that are very lacking in other DIY soap videos). Since you don't have any products for sale on your website, including the ingrediencies for the various recipes, I can only guess that your income is derived from your YouTube channel. So just to do my part, I subscribed. This is the only channel I have done that with. The best part of your videos is the fact that you don't nag at us to do so. Thank you

Carla Ferracini: I was just introduced to the importance of PH in hair care and it's very surprising the amount of shampoos in the market with the wrong ph! So I'm very pleased with how detailed you go by this process. I don't think natural is necessarily better but when you go with the science as well and take so much care with every step? My mind is blown. You are amazing! Thank you!

Vasileia Sgouromalli: Dude, i was looking for a natural shampoo recipe for days now! Thank you SO much, you literally opened my eyes as to how to make my own natural cosmetics!! You are the best!!

lijah: omg your channel is inspiring me to make my entire lifestyle diy it’s such a reassuring feeling to physically see and know everything going into what you use

Ziana V.: It would be amazing if you could make antibacterial and anti fungal cleansers for the body and even surface/fabric cleaners! So happy to have found your channel <3 An eczema lotion/cream would also be great!!

Brisa Costera: Girl. Your hair looks so beautiful! Also, love your videos. I love how calming and informative they are.

Yvette Rae: This is incredible! Thank your sharing tour scientific knowledge and recipes with us ! Would definitely love an ayurvedic/hair growth promoting version of this shampoo!

Would it be possible to point out where differences between the hair types require special attention in terms of ingredients?

Ceci et Cela: You are so inspiring! I have been in the Beauty Industry, as a Cosmetologist and advanced Manicurist, for nearly 20 years, yet have never been so into a craft as I am now. I found your channel and website just a few months ago and am hooked! Your recipes are so simple to understand, and I love that everything is natural. You are my go to, when I have a question about lotions etc. I am from Alaska, but will be visiting England early next year. I’m sure this sounds weird, but I would love to meet you. You are my guru ~Ananda

Fineapple Felicity: You are absolutely correct in testing the shampoo on your hands first. I purchased a DIY shampoo on Etsy and used the same method. It dried my hands out so I assumed it was “doing it’s job”. Big mistake. That was before watching this video of course. After washing my hair with the product, it took 2 months of DC and a protein treatment to get my hair back to normal. Knowledge and common sense is power.

Simon : Hi, I truly love your videos. I have been suffering with dandruff ever since I can remember. I used to use head and shoulder shampoo which is now been discontinued. Can you create a video for a natural-ish dandruff shampoo please? I have a feeling many are interested x

Deontré McPhee: This video was amazing! Easy to follow and fun to watch

Roundandround: We really need a hair routine video from you. Your hair is amazing

Wayne Gross: Elise, this was so, eye opening! I make shampoo disks with surfactants, but I have some customers who bulk at the idea! This tutorial gave me a boost to get into the studio and create some bottled shampoo. Let you know when and how it is received by my customers! Jill Gross

Ordinary Faerie: Love this video! How long does the moisturizing shampoo take to thicken? I waited 24hrs and it still seems a little runny.

GorgeouslyT: Thank you so much I wanted to start my own product line but i didn’t know how to really make the shampoo base part with natural ingredients and this just helped me thank you for this video ♥️

Buttercup: I probably won’t make shampoo by myself but I enjoyed the video so much, the voice is so relaxing and everything is so beautiful ❤️. So professional! Congratulations

Nigel King: I am so excited for this recipe! The other recipes I've made from you have saved my hair.

RinnythePooh: For the section of the conditioning shampoo where you added in the coconut oil, you said we could add in which ever oil happened to be most moisturizing for our hair in particular. Would I also be able to trade in the coconut oil for the addition of a butter, such as like mango butter, or would you solely recommend utilizing an oil for that step? Thank you!

Ragan Foster: Hi Elise! Thank you so much for your video. I have a question, could both recipes be mixed to make a clarifying, but conditioning shampoo?

Giganta Store: Excellent! So clear to understand and basic, yet not. Love it. Keep it up. Would love to see you make a foundation recipe. those are hard!!!

Lisa Laundry: Thank you Elise you do an amazing job, I love your creativity and warm personality. I will gather some supplies to try this formulation. Please make a shampoo and conditioner bar for 4 c hair please and thank you

Eduarda Barros da Silva: Girl!!! Your channel is like my wishes came true!!! Thank you!!

Chronic Grace DV Recovery Specialist ®🌱: You have an amazing collection of recipes. You have such beautiful hair & glowing skin that can only come from using natural DIY products.

Sam Jones: Wow! Getting me excited! I was going to buy these ingredients for a body wash. So I can have both!

Daphanie_ diary: Thank you so much for this I really appreciate it❤️

delyani sairam: Hi...I really like your contents. I tried already your body butter recipe, and it's really great. By the way for this shampoo recipe can we use liquid castile soap for replacing cocobetaine? Thank you before for answering my question

anna sartzidou: Hi and thank you so much for your excellent recipes! I' m having a problem in the conditioning shampoo. I tried twice making it, following your instructions in detail, but after almost a week both my shampoos get separated, leaving water down and oils up, as if I didn't heat it. Do you have any idea why is this happening? Thank you in advance!

Beanie Keerthi: I love all your tutorials and you are simply amazing! God bless ! Can you please share the recipe for solid shampoo and solid conditioner. Thanks

Jai Sparks: Hi! Just came across your channel and love it already. Gonna sub and watch a few more videos, thank you . What do you think of sci along with coca betaine for this recipe? It's also a very mild surfactant and the one I have in stock. Would appreciate your advice. Thanks PS Can these be used on relaxed hair as well?

Rita: Do you have substitutes for the Decyl glucose and cocomadopropyl betaine? These are coconut oil derivatives, so they are significantly drying to my hair. Thank you!

live organic: You are amazing ma'am, your voice is so sweet and your teaching style is also very unique ❤️

Heidi Croucher: Just a warning! The shampoo works GREAT! But if you sub the hydrosol with water or Aloe Vera Juice, have a backup plan to cover up the scent of the massive amount of glucoside! Lol. Hydrosols work great at covering up the scent though. So I suggest sticking to using a hydrosol OR a fragrance/Essential oil to work into the formulation! Happy making!

Anusri M.: Dear Elise, I absolutely loved this video I've been searching this for quite sometime now. Thank you so much for sharing. Love your calm soothing voice and your knowledge of the subject matter. I do have a question, is this shampoo for all hair types, I have a dry scalp, and finding a nice clarifying shampoo is difficult as I too often find them rather harsh. What would you suggest I add to the clarifying shampoo to suit my needs.

Sujata Biswas: @WholeElise: Ma’am you’re simply amazing.. your tutorial is very informative.. lots of love♥️

Tees Napz: Very nice, clear and informative!!!

Charmaine Hurst: Wow! Thank you for your video! The best is homemade, from scratch without harsh chemicals! I will want to try to make the clarifying and conditioning shampoo soon!

Blain: For the one that uses wax, could you use beeswax? Also, if I wanted to use honey in the recipe would I just replace the antioxidant with honey (since Honey is a source of antioxidants) or would I replace something else also in order to use more honey?

Mar Silas: I will never do this but the process is mesmerizing.

AngelikasApothecary: you probably get a lot of questions but i don't know if anyone asked this yet, the coco betaine acts as a secondary foaming agent right? could i potentially substitute that with castile soap?

Cierra Holler: I am so happy I have stumbled upon your page. Your website is absolutely fantastic!! How much would you say this cost you to make a single bottle? I'm also wondering if you can suggest a place for amazing scents that don't come in essential oils such as peach?

Neha Ambekar: You’re videos are really great and the information you give is very helpful. Can you please make a video on how to make essential oils at home please

Zulema Garza: Just wanted to say thank you! You inspire me so much!

Fran Limmer: Which natural perservatives can you recommand for toddlers under 3 years? I am making my sons hair and skin care and your channel has been super inspiring! Thanks so much!

DefinitelyNotElsie: This is so cute, I came here because I thought it'd be really helpful and then I realized we have the same name super cool, thanks for the vid

Chrissy: Thanks for sharing . What other protein can you use other than Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein?

Y.a.s.s TV: I your knowledge! Definitely eyeing this for my next experiment. Thank you so much for sharing this. ♥️

London Paris: Here skin and hair are the living proof that she know what she is talking about !! I love it. Yiur channel is like a dream come true !

Justine: Eye am so glad eye found your channel. Definitely was looking for a WOC that I can relate to while I learn about skincare and becoming an entrepreneur.❤️

Wake and Make 365: What should you do/add if you get the overly dry feeling?

Edward benny: For a whole year...I searched for this and Viola just found one. Thank you even for the kind explanatory voice.

Hector Nanez: All these things do not sound natural lol but that just tells me I need to learn a lot about all these things! Thanks for the videos!!

Design Mews: This is awesome. Love your channel. Can't wait to try these.

sensimania: Thank you! I've been wanting to learn how to make a creamy shampoo (since the course that I'm taking only gives examples of the ones with guar & xantham). Glad to know that my theory was correct! The creamy shampoo is just an cream emulsion but with surfactants! I have ancouple of questions though: 1. I was under the impression that shampoos should have the minimum of 2 surfactants (primary and co). Would it be possible to use CAPB alone or would it be too mild? 2. What type of guar gum did you use? Cationic, cosmetic grade, or food grade? 3. If I substitute the coconut oil for shea butter, would it be too heavy?

Safia Tarique: Hey! Loads of love from India ❤️ Just wanted to ask you if this shampoo can be used as a colour protecting shampoo?

Gutes Leben: THANK YOU ELISE. God bless you above all your expectations!

4everJazz: These are just what I was looking for!! I'm so excited!! Question? Can I add fragrance oil to the moisturizing shampoo? If so, how much or how little should I add?

Anne Marie: Hi Elise, great video! I tried the conditioning shampoo using the same ingredients and measurements from your website. It turned out great However i had separation after a day amd have to shake before use. Any tips to prevent this happening?

reading books: Gorgeous. And such good information.

Maya Belgica 1-2白摩耶: are there ways to change the scent for the clear shampoo? Love the video btw!!

Doris Nwanne: @wholeelise your blog is extremely helpful. Please can you tell us how to make our own Rinse-out conditioner?

Sweet Sistaz Bakery: Hello, does the water and oil phase need to be at a specific temperature before adding fragrance oil and preservatives? Thanks!

Rae Talks: It's the editing for me! This is a great video, thank you for sharing!!!

Temi Noibi: hello i love your videos so much but in regards to the conditioning shampoo, what gives it more of a cloudier white color than a more gel like slime color like a regular shampoo?

NME Creates: Thank you for your amazing videos! I find them very informative. Could you please tell me about the lather? Does your shampoo lather like the commercial shampoo? Big bubbles etc or is more creamy like a co-wash?

Sierra: Hi! I can’t find the video, but I made your festive bath salt. It’s beautiful, however, the consistency has turned into like a wet sand almost. Have you experienced this before? I store it in a airtight, glass container.

José Luis Vargas: I love it. Just one question. What if I don’t want foam in my hair conditioner? What should I avoid? Decyl glycoside or betaine? Thanks!!

Sara Saleem: Hi elise , can you please tell that the emulsifier (BTMS-25) used in your conditioning shampoo is suitable for naturally straight hair as well ?

Seer Channah: Wow this video is awesome. I see some ingredients to add to my clay washes. The Ayurvedic herbs I use really strengthen my hair, define my curls and reduce the amount my hair sheds.

Tila Shakeila: Just made the conditioning shampoo & man oh man. It’s amazing, I did add coconut orchid essential oil for a light smell

Diana Rondilla: Hello! I've been watching some of your videos as guide because I would like to formulate my own shampoo. I would like to ask a question, is it a good idea if I use herbal infusion from dried flowers for the water phase of my shampoo instead of using floral hydrosol? I'm thinking if I could use the plant pigments from the petals as well to add color to my product. I hope you make more great DIY recipes soon! I also have textured hair so I really thank you for posting this :-)

Jasmin Shipman: What are those little plates called that you use to stir the ingredients together?

Shantrell Williams: I absolutely love your videos. More importantly, I love that they for the most part are plant derivatives. Question about Decyl glucoside: the PH is about 11-12.5, how is it still a gentle cleanser? Would a 50/50 solution reduce the PH?

D'Atra Prospere: OMG I was just thinking I need a DIY shampoo !!!! Love you girl!!!!!

Chammy: Thanks so much for this video . Can you do an emulsified body scrub video please?

Tabitha Dorcas: Is there a substitute for the wax and alcohol for the conditioning shampoo?

Yusra Hashim: thank you for sharing your great knowledge in cosmetics, highly appreciated.
