Going Gray 2: Silver & Steel - How To Enhance Your Gray Hair The Easy Way

Going Gray 2: Silver & Steel - How to Enhance Your Gray Hair the Easy Way Four months ago, I went to my hairstylist and had him bleach my hair out as light as we possibly could. A harsh method, yes, but I have short hair and wasn’t too worried about damage. Then I toned it with Manic Panic Virgin Snow to a white color. I used the color right out of the jar and was really pleased with the result. After a bit, I decided I wanted more of a gray tone and toned with Manic Panic Blue Steel mixed 50/50 with Pastelizer on the top of my head and full strength Blue Steel on the rest of my head. I walk you through it in the video! To maintain my silver tone I wash every other day with purple shampoo. When I’m feeling flush I spring for the Goldwell Dualsenses Unisex and Shimmer Lights when I’m more budget minded.

Purple shampoo will keep your gray looking more silvery than dull, try to wash with a purple shampoo every third shampoo. Don’t use it too often or hair can start to get a little lavender! Frankly, I like my hair a bit lavender so I hit it with purple conditioner, too! Texturizing pomade or paste is a great way to give a separated texture to hair that is much more popular and trendy right now. (Aveda is my favorite – love how fresh and clean it smells!) Going gray is freeing, but unfortunately, society still thinks of gray hair as old, so we have to work a little harder to keep it looking fresh and youthful to match our spirits!

Today, on going gray, we are going to go even grayer, I'm going to use the same Manic, Panic, blue steel that I originally use to get my gray color. But I want to enhance this gray that I've got coming in I'm naturally blonde, so you're, seeing my natural ash blond, color mixed with the white that's coming in, and it just gives it a it's a little dull, I'd like it to be a more vibrant silver. So to start, I'm really happy with the white tones that I have coming in here, so I don't really want to alter that. I just want to take this. I don't know you can tell there's a little tiny bit of the yellow cast on the bleached area. So this is going to just cover that and tone it and give it a little more of a silver color and then, in this undertone back here I want to actually deepen the gray a little bit, so I'm going to go from okay. So, let's see my natural part is right here, I'm going to take just a little bit over and same on the opposite side. You this section right here. I am going to start with first laughs on so I'm going to use the Manic Panic blue steel that I mixed with the pastel Iser. I'Ve got about 60 %, pastel Iser and 40 % of the blue steel, letting you mix that together and I'm going to put that right here on this top section paint that on you, you you get that all nice and covered up early century. Sorry about not looking at you the way I have this set up. I have a mirror down below the camera. I'Ll get the handles. Eventually, it's a learning process. Okay, so now we have our mixed blue steel and pastel eyes are up on the top. I want a deeper gray, all throughout the rest of the hair, so I'm going to use the straight blue steel right out of the container container, it's a little tough to get the brush into the container. So I just dumped the blue steel into a bowl that I can get it out of a little easier now we're just going to go around and completely cover everything else. I'M excited to see how this turns out and wanting to do this for a while, but you know you go out and audition and they see one way and if they hire you, you have to kind of stay open. That way you can't change it. So it's nice that I have whole moment between gigs we've been pleasantly surprised at how going gray has helped me get more work, that kind of a nice nice little bonus. You want to wear your oldest scummiest t-shirt plain that stuff. Don'T forget! Towels on the floor! Okay, we are thoroughly covered going to comb this through and then we're going to process for about half an hour 45 minutes, we'll give it a shampoo and then show you the results. I'M excited, I'm also a mess. First off I lied to you, don't shampoo it. I reread the directions and you're just supposed to rinse it. So after you process for about half an hour to 45 minutes, then you just want to give it a nice good rinse with some hot water, and I have to say I am delighted with what difference I got with it. It'S very subtle, but you can see. There'S not quite so much of a line of demarcation now it's softened it and it just doesn't have like the yellow tones on the ends. It'S just a nice cool silver and it blends in back here. So I think it's a very subtle subtle difference, but for those of us who are embracing our Gray's but still want to enhance it, the Manic, Panic, blue seal is a nice way to just give it a cooler tone, get rid of those yellow tones and and Have a nice icy silver tone to it definitely make sure you wash with purple shampoo about every third shampoo, that's going to keep those silver tones, nice and icy. I'Ve got all the product information for you on my blog, unique Monique, calm and please subscribe to my videos here.

Celesst NW: I'm very grateful for your wonderful videos. I'm a 54 year old woman, and I'm just ready to embrace my age and changing hair. This is a hard step for some women, but I think a profound one. I want to do this gracefully, as you have. You are stunning in grey, really, and you help to make this process fun and exciting. Thank you so much!

Dawn Blair: Thanks for this video, Monique! I am toning my grey today per your tutorial. I have about 30 minutes to go! My hairspray has yellowed my white, just like what you were showing on your bleached section. This is an easy solution, and I am so happy you shared this with us. Thank you!

robin smith: Monique I finally did it. Went to a salon and had my dyed auburn hair bleached out to transition to the white hair that is now my natural color. Hence I am a senior. I am thinking about trying the manic panic because my hair is so white I feel washed out. Might go Manic Panic Blue Steel this weekend.

Patricia Joyce: Thanks Monique! I've "gone gray" for a few years now and was looking for a way to class it up without getting too crazy with pastel colors. Manic Panic blue steel looks great on you! I'm going to give it a try.

Cheryl: I am about 2 months in to letting nature take its course with my hair...I have been to this stage before and then chickened out! The silver/white is such a shock... I have been too afraid to just cut my dyed hair off like you did! I will whack it off here at some point I think because it will look so bad! Right now I am wearing head bands to cover my head...not attractive either.

Patsy Simek: Hello Monique.  You are my style Icon!!  Really enjoy the fact that you are down to earth and willing to share your talent. I am getting ready to retire and want to ramp to my looks.  After many years of sitting at a desk at the office, I am ready to start a new life, a new address and a new look.

Dee Statham: I had never heard of manic panic until I saw your video. Well I tried the blue steel/pearlizer combo and love the results. Couldn't believe how much brighter my silver looks. Today I saw manic panic on sale at Sallys so I bought the lavender and snow white. Next time will blend them and see what kind of result I get.

Notorious M.O.M: Hope all is well with you. Just wanted to let you know that you are what is stopping me from grabbing the hair dye and embracing my salt and pepper hair. I am 30 and decided 3 weeks ago to buzz my hair off, I am tired of looking artificial. I hope that my hair looks as fabulous and grey like yours someday. Keep up the good work, love your videos, hello from NYC

Susan Smith: Thank you for your secrets and tips! Extremely helpful!

divajayde01: Thanks so much Monique. I love your videos and how brave you are to try everything whilst sharing with us.

Carol Lambert: Love your blogs so many really good tips for us older ladies I'm SHHHH 71 soon but I'm young at heart. I wash my grey hair in a silver based shampoo and everyone loves my colour. Thanks again for all the tips you share FROM THE UK

msolupi: Hi Monique I just wanted to say that I appreciate all the help videos. i had my hair all grown out (salt n pepper ) and i really liked it because it was maintenance free and very healthy. My eldest sister and brother told me I looked older than I was. So I went and got me some dye. Like the other lady that comment I regret that I did that. i have short hair already and have about one inch regrowth, what do you suggest should i just keep letting it grow or do what you did. Again thank you and I truly appreciate your help, I'm 52 years young.

dam mar: Love this look! The color and the cut.

Lee Travathan: I recently started to do health and beauty videos here at YouTube and decided to embrace my gray/white/silver hair. I like to wear wigs too, but I am anxious to try the manic panic to enhance what I have going. Pop on by my channel anytime.... you may have suggestions for me. Meanwhile, thanks for the videos you post here. I always enjoy them. I was a Hollywood girl too, for a long time. I still miss the place at times.

Mattie Newberry: Thank you!!! You answered my biggest questions about use on greying hair.

Tammy Rentz: Hi Monique! I am 50 and embraced my silver 2 years ago. I loved my hair and how it sparkled. Then one day my husband said it made me look OLD! I was devastated, ran to Walgreens and picked up a box of brown hair dye. Oh how I regret doing this! So here I am trying to transition all over again. I took the all over highlights approach, but I am seriously thinking about doing a bleach bath to get it super light then using the manic panic to tone it. My question....should I risk the damage to my hair with a bleach bath or just wait it out? Thanks much and BTW you look FABULOUS!

marilyn gandhi: I am still going blonde until my stock of blonde is used up, but you are talking me into the gray look....<3

Loren Robertson: I love the effect on the top front part of your hair. My hair is also all natural...no coloring or bleaching has been done. But I don't like the darker blond -brown hair that I have on the sides and back (top) of my hair. I want it to all be lighter, brighter, and a silvery white color. I don't want it to look fake! I don't mind a darker silver color where my darker hair is now. But not sure how to get the results I want. I was a hairdresser when I was a young lady, but that's been 30 + years ago! But I do know a little about coloring and know that I can end up with red tones on the brownish areas...So the question is should I opt for bleaching first, or just a high lift (what shade is what I want to know!) coloring kit? Thank you and I love your hair! Love your videos too! This is the second or third time I've watched this one.

Truth 2027: Monique, You are inspiring me to take the plunge! My hair will be white I think - like my mothers. (It's been so long since I have seen the natural color - hee!) Was a dirty blonde/light brown before that. You mentioned in one of your videos that your hair is curly - can you do a "Curly Silver" video? Do you ever style your hair curly?

Mari Mari: I just tried the Manic Panic Blue Steel on my white hair. I absolutely love it. Yours is the only videos I can find about how to enhance already white hair.

mary mulligan: Just found you watched some of your vids .......love them ....18 months into my silver journey am all natural now ...just trying to grow out my hair into a bob ... Love your make up video and hair videos ....thank you xxxx

Teresa Yantone: I am so ready to stop coloring my hair. I have let the gray grow out about three inches now. My hair length is about the middle of my back and I want to cut it off so badly but my husband is opposed. Do you have any suggestions of how I can make it through the transition w/o cutting it short?

NATALIE TV English: My husband is all gray (pretty white) he had premature gray hair as well. I will try this technic .. thanks for the great explanation! Natalie, CANADA xO

cat: Thanks for all your tips! A little off the subject, I have a question about your hair texture. I noticed that your hair is so curly in the back and at your nape but the rest is straighter. Mine is similar, but not as straight as yours. I was wondering if you have a keratin treatment done? I'm trying to find out if it will discolor white hair. Also tell us how you have such beautiful shapely arms, inquiring minds want to know!

Elizabeth Rodriguez: You look Fabulous! I went gray awhile ago but I get very upset when some of it on the sides and the top get yellowish. I must try this product. Thanks!

kay cooper: Monique, I know this is not you " first rodeo", but I found myself almost holding my breath worrying, even about that white chair you're sitting in! LMBO!! Your hair looks beautiful!!

CJ 1419: Have you tried Naissant? I haven't tried any other purple shampoo so can't compare but I really like it. The shampoo dries but the masque really softens. Would love for you to do a review just to see what you think since you have used more products than myself.

Wendy Ferraro: I am 57 with long blond-ish hair that is going grey is patches at the root and bleached ends with ombre in the middle where it is growing out between the two. The undersides in the back is almost brunette. I want to be grey believe it or not, but I am not so sure about cutting off 5 years of growth yet. Although I love your cut.

X X: very neat and good work - before and after !

Hummingbird 1716: Ran across your videos for the first time, today! You're Great! Make it Clear & Easy! Karlyn Natchez, MS.

Cheryl Rotnem: Monique, do you think the manic panic along with the pastelizer will do the trick for my "real" grey hair? Mine is more salt and with lots of pepper color.

D.J. Recchia: So close to letting it go natural - just have to get my head on straight.  I have to interject,  my 86 year old mom, has her hair silver white and spiked.  Afraid we will look like sisters.

Ruth Coates: Beautiful hair color....thank you for showing

Marcia Nease: Love your videos I have started watching them every night!

Susie Zapata: i want to dye my mother in laws hair with your solution but im curious would it lift her natural hair black? or in general what would be the effects?

debbie greer: love the color. It looks good. Don't like the yellow in gray hair.Thank you so much for sharing.

Deborah Fonner: I love your Videos I'm just starting the imbrassing my Grey and want a more silver look, just wish you talked about what each product was going to do like a before and after picture, and do you wear extensions and were and what color do you get now, I have a bunch if blond ones but can I silver those? Or do I have to buy new ones. Any help greatly appreciated

Cathie Tonkin: I want you for my next door neighbor.... so we could do each other's hair!!!! I have decided to stop dying my hair...at almost 70 now, enough is enough! I was dark brown but went blonde the last 10 years or so with long long hair now, but letting it grow out, with about a half inch of gray coming through at this time. Ive decided that once I have a good inch all the dyed hair is getting chopped off! I have no idea what I'm going to look like, but I'm ready, I think?!? Lol. Thank you for all your info.... it's helped me feel great to embrace my age. I want to look great but now like a model or younger than I really am! Your videos make it so much easier to welcome this time of my life! (The reason I'm going gray, 1. Too expensive to have my hair dyed every 3 weeks here. 2. My last hair dresser doesn't know how to wash my hair without tangling it into a mess and then blames me for having long hair! ). Thank you so very much Monique!!!!

Billy Jackson: Still amazingly beautiful..hair looks great

Donna Smith: I want to try it but I’m worried it will go green . Have you experienced the green with this product?

Rita Goedecke: You are so comfortable with all these hair products, I would not know where to start and with what. But being an actress probably makes a difference because

Karen Fowler: Lol...was trying to find where you replied to an earlier comment of mine (thanks for that!! ) but couldn't. I wanted to share that at 48, I've been pretty solidly gray (and WHITE up front and on top) for decaaaades....inherited the early gray from Mom, and just have been chasing the stripe as you put it, most of my adult life. I found your videos while doing research on how to make this transition and am so glad I did - your videos are encouraging and fun but even better, provide the best instruction on how to make the initial jump, follow up with variations on how much product to use and when coupled with good stuff in the way of makeup and wardrobe tips. Many of the tips I've learned by watching you are ones I hadn't considered yet but will need to soon. (I've got brown eyes and brows, so I've got some ideas on how to edit my own pallet . I AM kinda envious of those of with the clear blue eyes...I actually talked my own mom into making the change when I noticed how her white roots really seem to brighten up her gray-blue eyes and I somehow convinced her. Her eyes, like yours, just POP and are stunning framed with the lightness of the gray-white and she's never regretted it since) I've already been talking with my long time friend and stylist and in a week (lol, waiting for payday), we've got a date with destiny. I'll have to come back and post some pictures when I've got them (profile is still set to dark after a breakup, might be time to change that too). But thanks again, Monique...I have a feeling your leading a minor army of women forth into their journey to embrace nature - but with empowerment from product. Sooo glad this is happening now when gray is really in vogue and much time and attention given to better products for mature women. I think going gray thirty years ago was really a different story and not nearly as much fun. Cheers!! :)

joyce mccabe: have you ever used manic panic on it's own not the blue?

mulberry100: I've been enjoying your videos. I have very dark blonde hair that has been lightened/dyed a medium to light blonde for at least the past 10 years. It is too yellow and I'm wanting to grow out my now gray/white hair. (I'm estimating that I'm about 75% gray...with the front 2/3 and top layer of my hair about 100%) If I use a silver shampoo (purple) on my hair would it help my dyed yellow blonde become more white to better match what I'm trying to grow out?? I'm just trying to make the first 6 months of the transition as easy as possible. I don't mind cutting it, but I can't do something as short as a pixie.

twominutetips: Too much use of purple shampoo will turn the hair a metallic colour. Best way to remove yellow is using baking soda mixed with water and a couple of drops of shampoo.

BirdOfParadise777: Is this what you are using now or have you changed anything? If so, which video would it be? Thanks:)

Wendy Whitlow: Hi Monique! I just watched this video and I love how confident you are with the silver! My husband has been asking for several years to go gray. I am finally there! It was a process but I love the silver and the grey. I am 47 and struggle a bit with the image of a gray haired grandma look. I am gray or salt and pepper in the back silver on the sides, I have been coloring since I was in my 20's. When I saw some of your tutorials I am so inspired and want to continue to embrace who I am now that I am more mature! Thank you for putting tutorials out there for us to learn from and just love who we are where we are!

Evelyn Lorenzo: Hi, Monique I have salt pepper hair and my grays are that UGLY YELLOW can I use steelblue MP on all of my hair with out it affecting my dark hair or affecting it to much.

Fay Carter: I have short salt and pepper hair. (Not bleached). 35% grey hair and 65% ash brown. Will the steel blue give me enough silver highlights on my grey hair? Will it make my ash brown darker? I want my grey hair to have silver highlights. Thank you in anticipation.

Richard Avitabile: I ordered manic panic blue steel and pastille at Amazon. Question is my hair is medium length and it's naturally white. I'm afraid it will come out blue. What do think. Yvonne

chuck mcveigh: Lovely...as usual.

Tom Olofsson: Your hair looks great.

Curvi Gurvii: I enjoy your style.

Cory Smeland: Using a blue shampoo will not tone your yellow hair to white, it will actually make it green. You need shampoo that has a violet base to counteract yellow. Blue is meant to counteract orange tones.

akalegs: Love your hair!

Liivika Saarman: Natural redheads skip gray, just getting white hair at older age I understand if it made people think redheads gray first

Maria Brett: My hair is platinum silver everyone thinks I colour it

Erica Pallaron: If I kept manic panic in for a 1/2 hour to 45 min, my hair would turn lavender.

Mary Ray: Can you use the virgin white snow toner on hair that is salt and pepper in order to achieve a whiter look !?!?

Joyce Denton: Do I have to bleach my hair?

Doby Carter: Does the Manic Panic work on people of Colors Hair? If so where can I find Manic Panic? Thanks for sharing

inna172134: Can I use a manic panic on blonde hair instead purple shampoo for toning hair?

Pamala Darsow: Beautiful

Davis: She is so beautiful and I wish that I looked 1/2 as good as she does

Susie Zapata: would i have to bleach her gray/black hair to see results ?

Kat Chambers: Wish you were in my life...I am thinking about going gray. I don't know what color it will be I think gray and white. I've never had short hair , but plan to keep cutting it as it grows. Would love my hair to look white like yrs.

Nana is losing it! Is it my Mind or weight?😵: First time viewer here. My under tone hair is brunette. Would it be ok to use it?

BirdOfParadise777: Trying to reply to the comment but, YT is being a pain! Do I just ask for purple shampoo or is there a good brand you would recommend? Thank you for the help:)

Susan Hull: Will do!

Tonya Roberts: That "purple shampoo" you recommended in another video, turned my hair lilac! NO! Not at all what I want. Taking more than 6 shampoos before it looks grey/gray again.

Duznt Matter: If one hair is more 'white' and not grey, can the blue manic panic still be used? Thank you

Carol Picard: you look amazing

Evi Lone: Love you music in the background...What is that?

Sorana44: Where I can find this manic panic?

Mickey: Where do you buy this manic stuff please?

Erica Garza:

Lydie Gatelet: j'adore vos videos dommage je ne comprends rien vous etes super sympa

Barbie Lockett: Hello Dear Monique: Barbie hear again.....You have the Greatest personality...and love your videos....come back and watch they over and over..Love Your self....Love your cats in videos to....Sincerely Barbie...Tx..

BirdOfParadise777: I really wish I could hear what you are saying. :(

Carmen Venturo: Sorry but I watched your entire video and saw the results.........but it didn't work for my hair??

Daly T: you look beautiful but I see tones of blue/purple

Bella Donnelly: Nicenicy tones

Liz Selwyn: looks like Janet Leigh.

Angela Ball: Xxx
