Hi, I'm Kat, and I make lots of DIY videos, about everything from DIY jewelry, home decor, gifts, and crafts, to Gluten Free recipes, No-poo hair care, DIY hair extensions, how to make sugaring wax and arabic wax for natural hair removal, and how to make a bracelet out of a toothbrush. Hi, I'm Kat and in this tutorial I'll show you how to dye hair chocolate brown using a combination of henna and indigo powders, I'm using 100 % pure powders for this project. And I don't recommend that you use henna hair dyes because they tend to not be completely natural and they have a lot of other ingredients in them that can actually be just as harmful as conventional hair dyes. Also, a lot of them have salts in them that, when applied over chemical hair dye that you might have already had in your hair, even for a long time, it can completely melt your hair and it will at least turn it green. So I recommend using pure henna and indigo for this project, I'll link in the description below where I get mine and it's 100 % pure henna, 100 % pure indigo henna, is going to dye your hair red. So I actually use a combination of henna and cassia on my hair to get a copper color and indigo will dye your hair black. So when you combine the two depending on what ratio you use, you can get a whole spectrum of different shades of brown. So for this one, I'm using a 50/50 and the acid I'm using to release the dye from the henna is just chamomile tea. You can use vinegar or lemon juice, but I find that those can be really harsh on the hair and I really prefer this method. So I hope you enjoy begin by brewing a very strong chamomile tea to release the dye in your henna. How much you need depends entirely upon how much hair you have so I usually brew more than I think I'll need then begin with your henna. Keeping in mind that this is going to make up half of your mixture then pour your tea into your henna. A little bit at a time mixing with a fork or a whisk as you go now, I'm using 100 % pure henna and indigo powders. For this, if you're using a pre-mixed, henna hair diet, keep in mind that you might not want to mix them with metal because they do tend to have other chemicals and salts in them. That could react badly with the metal. I only recommend using 100 %, pure henna, indigo or cassia powders on hair and just keep adding a little bit of liquid at a time until you get this Greek yogurt type consistency, then it's ready to be covered up loosely with a lid or saran wrap and Leave it in a warm place for the dye to release for 8 to 12 hours once the dye is released, you'll see a little bit of what looks like reddish oil sitting on top of the surface of it once the dye has released you're ready to start Mixing your indigo you'll want to mix about as much indigo as you did henna and you can play around with the ratios. They'Ll give you different shades from reddish to more black, depending on how much henna you use compared to indigo. For this I was going for more of a chocolate brown with red highlights, so I did 50 % indigo and 50 % henna you'll want to keep adding water slowly until you get sort of a creamed, spinach consistency then add the henna to your mixture and stir This very very well you'll want to make sure you completely blend this as well as possible, otherwise you could end up dying, different areas of the hair, different shades of colors. You need to make sure you completely blend this mixture as thoroughly as possible for this video. My beautiful sister natasha is modeling for me, she's, also brilliant and funny and very talented, but we're just focusing on her hair for this video. She has this gorgeous long, dark brown hair and she actually usually dyes it with henna, which gives it a little bit of a reddish tint, but for this one we're going a little bit darker than usual. So what I like to do, when I'm applying the henna is apply it first along the hairline, usually around the nape of the neck and then working my way up around one side of the head and then ending it back behind the opposite ear. I do this because I like the area along the hairline to be the area that I'm absolutely sure I'm getting the absolute best coverage, so if it dries out as it goes by the time I'm done with the rest of the hair, I can add a little Bit more of that henna indigo mixture and it's going to moisten it up and keep dyeing it a really nice rich color and, as you go, make sure you're fully massaging the henna mixture into the hair. You'Ll want to make sure the scalp actually feels wet. So that way, you know it's getting deep down into the roots of the hair, as you go, make sure you're massaging that in and that the scalp does feel wet and that you're getting it really deep in between those hairs. If you're not massaging it into the head, it's just sitting on top of sections of hair once you've gone all the way around the hairline part, the hair down the middle of the back of the head and then begin massaging the henna indigo mixture into the part. You'Ll want to do this the exact same way you did along the hairline, making sure you press down and you're massaging it in between all those little hairs and getting it right up into the scalp. This is going to ensure you're, not gon na miss any patches. In the back of your head that you might not see later until you rinse everything out once you've worked the henna and indigo thoroughly into that part. Do another part about an inch to a half inch over from the original one and just keep repeating this process until you've done an entire side of the head, and I recommend using these small sections for your parts, because if your parts are too far apart, you're Going to be missing entire strips of hair in between each of the parts, because you're not going to be able to massage this thick henna indigo mud into the scalp once you've done both sides of your head, massage that in and make sure all of those hairs Are stuck together, this is going to help make sure your henna stays wet underneath the surface, and it's going to help it dye for a longer period of time. Once it dries out, it's not going to be dyeing the hair as well, and it's just going to flake off. So you need to make sure you're keeping that moisture trapped in there next to the scalp and once you've done all of the roots of the hair. You can move on to the lengths of the hair and the exact same principle applies here: you'll want to work in small sections and make sure you're massaging it thoroughly into the strands of the hair, because if it's just smooth over the surface of a pony tail, It'S only going to be dyeing the hairs on the outside of the pony tail and you'll completely. Miss everything on the inside so make sure that you're separating that pony tail into small sections and massaging that mixture thoroughly into it and once you've completely saturated. All of the length of the hair fold it up into sort of a messy squishy beehive on top of the head and press it into place. It should be wet enough to just stick right up there for a few seconds. While you prepare to get something to cover it, you can cover the hair with a plastic bag or an old junky towel. I recommend using saran wrap because it's easy to get and you can just cut off as much as you're going to need, wrap it once around the head. And then I recommend getting another section of saran wrap to cover the top of the hair and really keep all of that moisture in then you'll need to let this mixture sit on the hair for at least an hour to two hours. Some people will leave henna on their hair for six or even 12 hours, but I haven't found any significant improvement in the results by leaving it on longer than two hours then use some water and clean up the ears and the skin around the neck and try And relax for as long as you can stand having this on your head before you rinse it out, do something: relaxing or you'll, go crazy and then rinse it off using whatever your preferred method is for cleansing your hair, my sister likes to use a can of Coconut milk first and then she massages that into her hair and rinses it out and continues with her regular, shampoo and conditioning routine. This leaves her hair super soft and well moisturized, and it smells a lot better than the henna indigo mixture henna on its own smells pretty good, but indigo can be a little bit stinky and, as you can see, it gave her this absolutely gorgeous chocolate brown color That has some red highlights when you get it in the Sun. Her hair is long and gorgeous, and I think this color looks absolutely beautiful on it. Elena Danailova: Best henna and indigo tutorial ever! Thank you!

Irene E: hi katrina, great vid very informative as well. First time trying henna, will order these products and try 50/50 combo but if for whatever reason i feel like theres too much red, how soon can I color my whole head again without causing any adverse effects?

Nami Main: Hi, Katrina! Actually, after watching your videos, I was thinking to dye my hair with henna + indigo (I have already bought the products) but I wasn't 100% sure how to prepare the henna because some people say to add lemon juice or coffee or tea... But I'm going to make it your way! Can I ask you what portion of henna + indigo did you used? I mean, I know you'd said 50/50 but how much? 50gr henna and 50gr indigo? An other question: I want a colour similar to burgundy, do you think it's possible? Maybe if I use 70/30? Thank you so much! PS: sorry about my english, I'm from Spain

Cristina Arnett: I use the "henna guys" in deep red. I recomend them, as it is idiot proof, pre mixed, and they make it clear what color it will be. It is the boxed color of the henna world i guess. I agree with all of this, i am currently sitting with a head full of henna lol. More is less when it comes to henna, box dye you can just slap in on, with henna you want your head dripping. And its gonna be a bitch to rinse it out. I rinse the top layer, and then use a shit ton of conditioner to get all the "dreads" worked out. I actually use a ton more dye than this lady, really get every bit in there. Also i have had a major difference in time, the longer the better. You want at least 4 hours. I also use black tea and a bit of stong coffee to make my henna (to darken it a bit).

Luka Francesca Serr: Hii <33 Lovely video! I have a question.. I have the same red hair colour that you have but I really want to become more brown than red (dark chestnut brown). If I would use the same combination of indigo and henna, do you know how it would turn out? :)

capricorn 8181: What should be the ratio of henna and indigo to colour the hair dark brown or black? And also does it stain the skin?

SwanLake: How long does she leave the coconut milk? Does she apply it directly on wet hair after she rinsed away the henna? :)

J W: Never brush your hair when it's wet!! It's much more vulnerable to breakage!

Sea Corals: In India henna is used to color hair since ages but later foreign brands like L'Oréal and others to sell their colors started brain wash to propagate their products to be best n Henna bad for hairs. So sad. Dear u don't have to shampoo same day on applying Henna. Best way is wash your hairs with water only and let it dry naturally then Oil ur hairs n scalp properly let it sit then shampoo the other day. This way it helps lock in colour in hairs also condition it too with oil.

Ankush Sood: is indigo completely natural like Henna? Would it be good to use for a person that is allergic to hair dye? to dye their hair black? considering henna works great on this person's head, would you suggest using idigo? it has no side affects right?

amram85: I have gray hairs and want to begin dying my hair. I think this is a great option for dark brown (Indian) hair, BUT I am wondering what the reaction will be in a chlorine pool. Would it hurt or damage my hair? I honestly don't care about the color fading (I can always repeat the process), but I'm more concerned about the indigo + chlorine = damaged hair. Can you please assist? Thank youuuu!

ThatcherJoe Thatches Roof: Kat Your my favorite You're doing a great job! Well done!

Amber Rose: I always apply henna myself. My hair is 2 feet long! I want someone to do this for me!!! <3

Randi Higginbotham: Get plastic caps at a beauty store. They come in packs up to 100 for mere dollars. Better than the saran❤️

Ali Marie Poe: oooh i love the coconut milk idea! Make sure you rinse in cold water, the hot water will rinse it out faster

Sabs B.: How long does it take for the índigo to wash off? Will the hair become red then?

Jane Hicks: Thanks for this I needed it x

Tan Hoe Jojo: A suggestion - use a towel that shows the colour of the hair. Here u used maroon so the colour got reflected onto the hair thus the henna colour isn’t obvious

rs bk: Hi mam,can i use green tea bag instead of chamomile tea bag?

rebecca barrow: do you apply on clean hair? wet or dry? thank you!!

Manehbag: Would it be easier to blend if you added the 2 dry powders together in the same bowl THEN add the water? Instead of separately mixing then adding to each other?

Jim Judson: Hi Katrina. I purchased an all natural and organic product - it is a mix of henna powder and indigo powder with some organic roasted coffee powder. It did not come with any instructions. All the research I've done shows the henna and indigo separately and then combining (like you did). Since they each require a different method, how should I mix/prepare this blend. Any tips? - Freddie

Chandra Cox: My indigo gets extremely clumpy and falls out everywhere. I don't understand why it keeps doing this. I only let it develop for 20 min and its yogurt consistency so it's not too thick and it's not dried out. It creates a massive mess and I just dont get why it falls out everywhere like that. It makes me want to switch back to chemical dyes because it's such a hassle.

Rebekah Barrow: Does the coconut milk cause the dye to come out at all?

Vannasgran 617: How long does the dye last?

Schahrazad Mustapha: It will be nice to use on someone with a grey hair to prove the result thanks for the tip.

M Carrigan: So I dyed my hair using a chemical dye about three weeks ago (bluish black) I want to switch to henna so it's easier on my hair (I'm naturally blonde) to go more black should I use more of a ratio of indigo? Thank you! ❤️

KailashRaj Purada: For best black hair result, use both individually first henna than indigo in 2 process

Lady Skywalker: How much of each product did you use?

J YA: hey Katrina. my mother die her hair, using henna. For preparing it, I take pure mustard+amla oil and mix them with pure henna powder still very thick in texture. Then I put in hot water(not boiling) and mix. Then cook it a little bit for a 2-3 minutes till i have the required consistency (stir constantly while cooking). and let it cool down a little bit. This way I never had to keep henna for so many hours. And then apply it on her hair in and near roots first, by making partions and sections of hair. this way I don't have to massage it. Kindly can you use this method also and give me a comparison. Moreover, if camomile tea isn't available, is there any other alternative that I can use?

Cheryl Yelland: Hi thank you for your tutorial. Would you do one for older woman who are naturally blond but have gone mostly grey and wanting to use Henna to get rid of the grey but do not want it too red... more blond colour? thank you

Nabanita Sen: The brand you mentioned, i read in the amazon review that it contains lead, just wanted to letting you know.

Abril G Garcia: How long does it last

s h: for good reslut better use henna first then indigo.. for black use indigo 75% and henna 25

Morgan Zammit: omg thank god you were born cause i don't know what i would of done without you xx

S S: hi Katrianosity, better shampoo the hair after 48 hrs, so that teh hair will have more time for the color to get into it.

The Joker: Does it work for dying hair completely black?

Organicrime: This is my GO TO VIDEO!!

CheekyMonkeyGirl: How long does it last? is it gluten-free as well? It doesn't specify on the box though.

The Detoxed Home: I have a question, is it necessary to mix the herb into the paste over night? I just tried the golden blonde according to the directions on the box and it didn't do anything:/

H S: My hair is dark brown but when thenhenna eventually fades will it come back to my natural colour or will go red?
