What'S good everybody, today's video topic is a very requested and controversial topic. Now you might think i'm coco for what i'm about to say. Not. You need to hear this. Everyone loves coconut oil, everybody, everybody and their mothers mom. I know you do too. It is known as the be-all end-all holy grail, cure-all, save you and your soul type of oil, but for some people's hair, coconut oil causes big problems and so in this video i'm going to share. Why or why not coconut oil may or may not work for you and your hairs. In order to understand this, we are going to have to get a little nitty gritty in scientific, so we do have a special guest for today's video, and i know many of you have been asking for some coconut oil free products and so at the end of This video, i will be sharing recommended products that i use that do not contain any coconut oil so without further ado, let's get to it now before i continue, i would like you to go ahead and hit the like button. The subscribe button, but, most importantly, can you comment below and um appreciate. This look, i feel cute. Okay, just tell me i'm cute and then we can move on. Thank you. So i want to know what makes coconut oil so great anyways huh. Well, first of all, if you don't like cocoa you're nuts, coconut oil is extracted from the dried flesh of the coconuts. That sounds scary, but it's. The meat inside coconut oil is a great source of lower chain length. Fatty acids such as lauric, acid, capric, acid, myristic, acid and palmitic acid and coconut oil is particularly good because it has the ability to penetrate into the hair strands, and it is coconut oil in particular. That can do this because of those lower chain length. Fatty acids that we just mentioned you'll see coconut oil has medium chain triglycerides that are one small enough to be able to seep into the hair strand through the cuticle, and they have a polarity, a charge that attracts them to the protein in our hair. So if you look at it this way, coconut oil is very attractive to our hair strands. It is both drawn to the inner portions of our hair and it wants to protect our hair, protect it from damaging things like water, coconut oil has a very strong water, repellent effect that can protect your hairs from damage like hydro fatigue, which, as we have previously Discussed is damage that occurs every time the hair gets saturated in water, from the swelling of the cuticle, which wears down the cuticle and the hair strands and the protein in your hair as well. Um. Sorry, do you mind the chewing now, as i was saying, coconut oil and its water repelling abilities helps to reduce what is called the water retention index or wri of our hair, which is basically the swelling of the cuticle that we talked about. That causes high girl fatigue. You see how this is all connected and so minimizing this is very beneficial, especially for hair. That is already quite damaged. So i mean you ask: what's so good about coconut oil anyways, it's helping your hair retain its protein, it's protecting it from environmental factors like water, uv rays, heat chemical treatments and so much more. Coconut oil definitely can benefit certain types of hair, but it's not for everybody. So why do some people feel like it makes their hair even drier, more brittle and actually cause breakage? So i see this floating around a lot. Coconut oil adds protein to the hair. Could it be actually? No? That'S. That'S just the myth. Coconut oil helps the hair retain its natural protein. For that reason, coconut oil can be very helpful for those who have very weak hair high porosity hair, whose protein is already flailing all over the place and in general, can be beneficial for damaged hair types. Now again, coconut oil isn't adding protein, but it is keeping that protein in your hair. Now, if you already have enough protein or on top of that you're using products that do have protein and you're experiencing that dry, brittle hair, that looks like you know, protein overload. It may not be that you are sensitive to protein, but that you have enough protein now the pattern that i have observed in people that do not like coconut oil for their hair. It'S oftentimes people with coarse hair that is low, porosity and already dry hair. Let'S unpack that low porosity means it's got a very low absorption rate. It'S got a very tight cuticle, it's already hard to get moisture into the hair. Now, on top of that, add a hydrophobic oil. That'S going to create a barrier and not allow moisture inside houston. We got a problem, this can lead to your hair feeling more brittle, more dry and even cause breakage and hair loss, but the reason it's doing that is because the coconut oil is fortifying your hair and strengthening it and preventing it from losing any protein or getting Any moisture in it's causing your balance to be off see it always goes back to balance, and this is why it's so important to observe our hair. Try to understand our strands before we go ahead and start throwing things on it that oh, that worked for. Her must work for me, or do you see his curls? What'S your secret so just to do a very quick hair analysis, because we've already done a very thorough and in-depth video analyzing your hair and determining your hair's needs in a previous video, also called the ultimate guide to protein and moisture. If you have not seen that video open it in another tab and watch that one next, but if you feel your hair and it feels very dry and brittle and is low elasticity, it's not bouncing back. In fact, it's if you pull a strand, it might even just snap right off. The answer is hydration and moisturization, and this is the common mistake that people make. So you need to keep this in mind. Coconut oil as an ingredient is an emollient the oily feel of it can add some softness and smoothing to the strands and while it's doing that it will create an occlusive barrier. So if there's hydration in your hair, it's going to be great. It'S going to lock in that moisture because it's protecting it from leaving your hair. Let'S make this a note to self and don't you forget it oils do not add hydration, they do not add moisture. They can keep the hair moisturized because they're sealing in that moisture. But the oil itself is not adding moisture, that's the role of an emollient or an occlusive agent ingredient so glad that we cleared that up, i'm so glad. I really hope that helps you when we actually need to be adding water and hydration into our strands to plump them up. Get them juicy see that juice. We should be focusing on hydration and humectant ingredients and that's why, when we're applying products to our hair using the prep style, finish method, we do it in the order of hello, hydration, humectant, emollient occlusive, the coconut oil should be going last, but when you're putting coconut Oil on already dry hair that is going to latch to the proteins in your hair and prevent moisture going in it throws off your balance, and this is why that's why it may not be working for you and just to sum all of that up. The reason why coconut oil could be making your hair feel even more dry and brittle is because, if you already have dry brittle hair, coconut oil is not adding hydration and moisture to your hair. It'S preventing, moisture from getting in and so a way to solve. That is to clarify and cleanse your hair, so you can help to remove the oils, the excess protein that maybe it's grabbing onto cleanse it from you and hydrate your hair with a true hydration treatment that is going to provide a lot of humectants to get into Your hair and attract moisture there and then you could use coconut oil. Just always hail hell. Hello, hey yo, hey, oh okay, but wait just a minute, because i know what some of you are thinking like um, i'm sorry, i can't do coconut oil breakfast lunch and dinner prep style finish. Nothing coconut oil is not for me quickly. Going back. To balance, i mean it's a pretty thick heavy oil. Did you see this thing? She'S freaking, solid, solid, baby, solid stuff, and that being said, there is too much of a good thing. The dosage matters, if you are slathering a bunch of coconut oil on your hair, in that case it might be too much. You may only need a little bit. You may need to dilute it if you are doing like a pre-poo hot oil treatment. Don'T use just coconut oil personally. What i like to do is mix it with a collection of different oils like sweet almond oil, jamaican black, castor oil, red pimento oil and mix all of these together, and then it's not just coconut oil. That way, i'm not getting too much of a good thing, but then it's like how do i actually know if my hair hates coconut oil and here's the thing. Unfortunately, there's no real studies that have conclusively said this specific hair type with these specific traits cannot do coconut oil right now. Our answers are very evidence-based, they're subjective, not objective. We can't actually say this is factual, but you could do a very simple test at home. Just check your kitchen and see if you have 100 virgin coconut oil doesn't matter the brand as long as it's coconut oil, warm it up, so that it is not solid and apply some of it onto your dry hair. Focusing on your lengths and ends leave it on for five minutes: 10 minutes, maybe an hour wash it off and feel your hair see how it did. I mean that's how i first experienced a coconut oil pre-poo treatment, which is which you know i shared with you guys in an old, outdated video. It was really my first experience with coconut oil and it actually wasn't my last i do enjoy using coconut oil. Keep in mind, i do have high porosity hair that has been bleached. It has been damaged. The proteins in my hair have been compromised and i do find that applying coconut oil onto my hair before i wash helps me achieve a little bit more shine and it's preventing too much moisture from getting into my hair and preventing high girl fatigue damage, which we've Really gone in depth and covered in a previous video, it's important that we try these things out for ourselves, because no one's hair is the same just because something works for one person doesn't mean it's gon na work for you and when it comes to using something Like coconut oil, unless you actually have an allergy to it, then definitely stay away, but doing one treatment in an experiment to see if it works for your hair is not going to cause any harm. You might just find it pretty fascinating and you might just learn something new about your hair. Did you know that coconut derived ingredients make up almost all of our self-care products today from hair care to skin care and body care body is skin? You know what i mean: coconut oil is the most frequently used component in the formulation of cosmetics, any of these ingredients that you will see on your products, yeah every single one. All of these you're, probably seeing a lot of those. These ingredients are made from coconut oil again if you are allergic to coconuts. You may have problems with this and oh boy. My heart goes out to you now they are not the same as pure coconut oil like this. So if you are having bad side effects from the pure oil because of your hair type, that doesn't mean that you're not going to agree with any of the ingredients. We have a lot to thank for coconut oil. You yourself might be too much for me, but you any of you, we need you, we need you in our cosmetic. So no hate appreciate just because your hair doesn't agree with the product that has coconut oil doesn't mean it's the coconut oil, let's not demonize coconut oil, because without coconut oil we probably wouldn't have any products at all. That all being said, i really don't need you as a whole. I need you, but you i don't, and so, if you are looking for coconut oil, free product suggestions, allow me, and so in this box, i behold all the products that i have personally used and could recommend to you that do not contain coconut oil. If you have been following me, you have probably seen many of these products on the channel already here's your one-stop shop of all the products that i use and could recommend this list is not definite. There'S a lot of products out there that don't contain coconut oil. These are just the ones again that i currently have that i can show you and that i use, but if you use some coconut oil-free products that you can recommend, please drop them in the comments section below and we're going to get through this box. I'M going to go in the order of how you would apply these products to your head, starting with a pre-poo, i'm just going to close my eyes and god we can't get rid of her. So some other great pre-poo oils i can recommend - would be sweet almond. Oil jamaican black, castor oil, red pimento oil, argan oil - these are great to prep and protect your hair with before you wash just put them all in here now to wash. These are all shampoos that do not contain coconut oil, but some of them do contain protein. So i'll, let you know if they have protein because again, if you're sensitive to coconut oil, you might also be you know not needing any protein, so verb ghost coconut oil free but does have protein aveda, shampoo, conditioner and co-wash, no coconut oil, but protein these eva Nyc shampoos and conditioner, but they do have protein and the jamaican black, castor oil, strengthen and restore shampoo from shea moisture is also coconut oil free, but it does have protein god now do we have any protein free options? Yes, we do. We have my favorite clarifying shampoo malibu, see undo ph9 these from seen coconut oil and protein free and honestly so hydrating and amazing they're a brand new obsession of mine. Just just putting that out there. The vivid tones shampoo and conditioner from curlsmith, as well as the scallop recipe line. This is the postbiotic conditioner. I ran out of the prebiotic primer and the probiotic shampoo scrub, but those are also coconut oil, free moving on to masks and deep conditioners. These two from curlsmith, which are also both protein free and very hydrating, this verb hydrating mask, is both coconut oil and protein free, eva nyc therapy sessions, hair mask no coconut oil, but that's a protein and an honorable mention for my favorite no yellow mask this. Is the vanilla no yellow mask? It has no coconut oil or protein and it's the best thing i use in my blonde all right now we'll go through leave-in products, so our prep style finished products. We'Ve got these lovely stylers from bounce curl, the leave-in conditioner and the clump, and define cream protein free, very moisturizing love, but the light cream gel. Although it is coconut oil free, it does have proteins, this leave-in miracle cream. Whatever you want to call it, it's got a very long name, but it's from shea moisture, wonderful for moisture and it is free from coconut oil and protein. These two gels, the cantu mega hold styling stay glue. Gel would be hard hold. This is both coconut and protein. Free the girls with curls jelly is light hold and has protein these stylers from curl smith, the weightless air, dry, cream, hydro style, flexi jelly and the curl defining souffle are all fabulously, coconut oil free and protein free, and i do absolutely love this leave-in styler. The verb reset number three and curl leave-in - are both coconut oil free, but they do have protein and the same goes for the verb, curl cream and ghost oil and then there's aveda products. I do want to say i pretty sure the whole bee curly line is coconut oil free, but it does contain hydrolyzed wheat protein now other stylers from aveda. This is the famolians special mention, because this doesn't have protein or coconut oil and is so fabulous, especially for fine hair. Another two liquid gels, which i both love, the confixer, has protein, but the flaxseed aloe does not. On top of that, it's a stronger hold and a lighter scent from brio geo briojo, these curl charisma products, so the leave-in defining cream, coil, custard and frizz control gel all have protein, but do not have coconut oil there's a lot. I know that was a lot. I think that's it except we need to finish remember even if you are sensitive to coconut oil, if you have high porosity hair, especially it is still really important to finish off your style with either an oil or a serum to lock in that moisture. But hey this is pretty much everything i have. I do encourage you to check out your ingredients on your products that you have at home. If you have some good recommendations, again leave them below and as i continue to make videos for this channel, i do have some product reviews coming up. I will always be sure to mention if there is coconut oil in a product or if there is protein or anything else that you need to look out for so that i can help you build your routine at home. That'S what we're here for i'm sweating. I also just really quickly want to mention that sometimes ingredients, products change so if you're shopping online or in store always check out the ingredients of a product to like double check yourself to make sure that there's no proteins or coconut oil or whatever you're looking for In a product, but i will link my favorite ones in the description box below so you can go ahead and click straight to the website to check it out for yourself, but as always, there will be more to come and to coco. Lewd, conclude conclude: you can't escape the coconuts, but i hope that you liked today's video learn something new and hopefully it helped guide you to a better hair care routine suited for you and your hair. If this was the first video of mine that you are seeing and you liked, it then make sure you give this video a thumbs up and subscribe for more because i create videos just like this and a lot more about hair care, each and every texture, tuesday. In a brand, new video so do stay tuned for more, but on that note this has been the main girl mail and i'm out peace. If you live in a place where you're coconut oil is liquid at your room temperature, where are you i'd like to know? I'M coming it's cold here. It'S cool, like a virgin, touched for the very first time that hurt my hand a little bit what the heck is in this [ __ ] she's, a brick, oh water, it's just not enough! Am i just all alone, filming by myself and i'm just here to suffer my retinas are burning and i'm thirsty. I need hydration amanda just check your chicken check. Your chicken check your kitchen. Let'S get back to it this this! That'S where that's, where all my moisture is going, it's going through my pits stop sweating. This is a new top, i'm also nuts sheesh. You use the smell, maybe it's the texture, maybe it's the grease. I legit want a spoon right now. Here we go airedale airedale. Unfortunately, i would just dive in it if i could right, you know what i got this one scientific. Thank you. I know a few things too. Okay hold on bathroom break. Oh my god. You know when the coffee just goes right through you. I swear it's like we can't get rid of you silly. I can't toss this. It'S heavy she's, a brick house, i'm sweating, so much hi sister. Azza Abou Alam: After 28 years of hating my curly hair (due to lack of understanding and not wanting to deal with uncontrollable frizz), your videos have changed my life. I cannot be more grateful for my curly hair and I cannot thank you enough for that. I literally wait for your videos every Texture Tuesday! Stay awesome- you're a true curly hair inspiration.

Nicole Muletox: “We have a special guest today to talk about all the scientific stuff” *is literally Mell in a different outfit and smart glasses* You’re too silly thank you for all you teach us! I finally love my hair

Susan Fumerelle: The quality of your content is unlike anyone else!! The amount of time, effort, facts and entertainment you put into your videos is one of a kind!

Jessica snipes: At the beginning of my daughter’s healthy curly hair journey we started using lots of different products. My daughter’s scalp became flaky with a big patch of Eczema. Through a sensitivity test we found out she is sensitive possibly allergic to coconut. Shampoos, conditioner, deep conditioner, and gels are easy to find without coconut but what we struggled finding was leave in conditioners without it. We finally found Your Mother’s Curl Talk 3 in 1 condition is coconut free. I’m glad to learn that Shea Moisture has one I can look for as well. It took me hours of online research to find just 1 leave in without coconut oil!

Caseys beauty studio: Omg she literally listed every product in the description. I respect that

Debora Martins: After 54 years, I have finally started to love my curls and it’s all thanks to you Mel. I literally just found your channel a month ago and have watched all of your videos. I have learned a great deal from you and have implemented many of your techniques in my routine. Thank you so much for your amazing work. BTW your sister Amanda is amazing too.

Jemyl: I can remember slathering my hair in coconut oil a few years back and my hair was SCREWED. It was the driest it’s ever been (and my hair was over processed and white blonde at the time so that’s saying a lot) and came out in clumps. Ever since I’ve never used it

Sheri: Mell, you're a huge help! Your explanation of coconut oil changed everything for me. I now use it on wet moisturized hair before I apply my gel. My hair stays moisturized and perfectly frizz free for days and days. I used to be the one with frizzy , hard hair because I applied the coconut oil to dry or unmoisturized wet hair. #lifechanger

SunsetSapphire Amy OrigelJenkins: Ive binged watch the last year's worth of videos this past weekend. I learned so much and now trying to find a routine. I embraced my curls but I've never had a routine. I've noticed my curls suffering from it and always had frizz. I now know and understand why. TY mell for your videos.

Cristina Villarino: Hey, Mel. So cool listening to you. Just one question: I'm about to get hold of my new set of oils (including Black Castor Oil, Argan and Red Pimento) but have just found out in a local shop in town they sell Olaplex 7 (the oil). That made me stop and reconsider, especially because of the good feedback Olaplex has from everyone. Now, the reason why I was hesitant was the same one you mention: would I be preventing it from the different benefits of a "multiple experience"? What are your views? Many thanks!

Crystal Pelham: This is so helpful! My hair hates coconut oil so I’m so thankful to see this product list! I also have food allergies, so finding CG products that I can use is difficult!

Tiffany McNerlin: This look is so pretty on you! I especially love the eye color with your skin tone My fine, wavy, and perpetually soft hair loves coconut oil but I don't use it in its pure form often (my products contain it though). However, it's awesome to use before swimming!

The Travel Teaspoon: Hi Mel! I’m a fairly new follower and also new to embracing my curls! Thank you so much for these informative videos My initial thought about going curly was to do the curly hair method but thanks to you and the more I research I don’t think it would be a good method for me to follow. I’ve never been a wash my hair everyday type of girl, I have so much hair and my hair would get dry if I do, however I’m really into fitness and I get all sweaty everyday so I’ve started washing my hair every other day. Would you recommend a coconut oil base shampoo for in between washes? I have the Shea moisture extra virgin coconut oil sulfate free shampoo and conditioner and I like it but wonder if is too much for my hair. I do like to do a clarifying shampoo and deep conditioner once a week to get a good cleanse and then cowash or use the coconut oil shampoo for the rest of the washes during the week.

Shale: Mel thank you so much. This came at the exact right time for me. I have an extremely consistent routine for my hair, and I’ve been noticing that only the top of my head has become super resistant to moisture (not the rest lol). I’ve been trying everything to get moisture into it, but am now realizing that I should probably find a conditioner, deep conditioner, and leave-in that are coconut oil free before I apply my coconut oil products to seal in all that moisture. Hopefully then I can get my moisture balance right. Thank you for the lesson!!

Zazzy Bandz: Always entertaining and informative Mell! Reminds me of watching the old food network show with Alton Brown. the science behind food ... I mean hair!!! Love it Mell. Great job!

Sara Takashima: Thank you for not demonising ingredients it's always an informative experience to watch your videos. Thank you for putting all the effort into your work. Stay safe and all the best for you all

Taylor Applegate: This is perfect timing! I love all the research you do, and your videos are always fantastic. THANK YOU for sharing your wealth of knowledge with those of us who really need it ❤️

Neisha Patel: This video is so helpful. Thank you for helping all of us curlies! Your videos have changed my hair life completely. I was doing my hair wrong my entire life!

Adriana DeLia: This is amazing content. Especially the lists of all the products that I too own now (thanks to Mel) that she has delineated clearly as having moisture or protein, etc. I can’t deal with reading itsy - bitsy ingredients on bottles anymore. If only I can get my curl back. I would kill to have her do my hair. It’s been a year...and I’m giving up on the curly journey.

Kristen Tardio: Thank you for this video, especially for the protein-free options. I've been looking for protein-free stylers in particular to try and keep balance. I suspect I have lower porosity hair. I don't heat style or color treat my hair, and moisture seems to be hard to get in.

Stephany Aleyda: THANK YOU so much Mell ! I’m trying to watch all your videos because they are so helpful and educational . I can’t believe so much goes into maintaining curly hair . I didn’t know any of these things and now I know why I’ve always hated my curly hair because I never learned about how to style it. I already starting implementing some of your tips and I notice a huge difference. I’m so happy that I can finally feel confident wearing it curly. Keep up your wonderful videos ! They really do help so much

e: Video suggestions: - Different type of hair oils (moisturizing vs sealant and which hair oil works on which hair types/porosity) - DIY hair masks, protein treatments ideas for each porosity Love your videos♥️

Carly Fengel: Great video! Love the butterfly clip look too :) Coconut oil has never worked for my hair and now I know why! (PS More wavy videos please! Maybe a wavy refresh day?)

Amber Marroquin: Love that color on you! Thanks for all your tips. I'm still experimenting with the different products you talk about. I still get frizz but not as bad and not until day 3. Without your videos I wouldn't be this far. So a big thank you for sharing and making things fun!!! You're awesome

Elizabeth Cervantes: omg thank you for this video! i’m allergic to coconut, it makes me break out in hives :,, and i always felt sad because everyone said it was the miracle cure for curly hair! i’m glad that there are so many alternatives that i can look into now! thanks mell :,)

Saray Valdez: I love how detailed your videos are even the description box!!! Sooooo incredibly helpful

Brooke Kool: Thank you for making this video!! I have been throwing moisture at my curls for years, like nobody's business, I had no idea that my hair needed protein. Did a emergency diy rice water mask yesterday and it's looking much better. Now to order a few products with protein.

Tanya M: Thanks so much for the video! Just wanted to add a recommendation, especially for any Aussie curlies out there: Clever Curl is all coconut oil free and a great line. Super hydrating! I don't have a problem with coconut oil per say, but I think sometimes it can be overused for me. I will use it before swimming or going to the beach, but I don't like it in ALL my products. Less is more.

Clarisa Izaks: Gosh this hair colour on her is absolutely stunning❤️

nanci utay: So much valuable information and so appreciated. You are so knowledgeable and explain everything so well while also being so entertaining! I wish all of my teachers could have been like you. I also love how you listed and organized the products in the description. Thank you

Amber Abbott-Farr: Super helpful AS ALWAYS!! I've always been 50/50 with coconut oil but this helped so much! I do like coconut oil, but mixing with other oils will be very helpful! Thank you Mell!

CuRvI CuRvE: I love how your videos are not just testing a product or the item but i love how you go in dept and give your thorough but yet detailed explainations of the pros and cons. Benefits and issues that may arise from misuse of a product based on different hair types❤

Syrup Blossom: Just found you last week and I'm already on top of the premiere after binge watching basically the whole channel. Ready to evolve out of my swamp rat phase and enter curly girl paradise.

Iamnautikah: Let’s just take a minute to appreciate Mells look today

Franchesca Mayí Almonte: My coconut oil is liquid Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, when I started seeing it on YouTube , I thought it was a different type of coconut or like the way factories prepare it make it solid, in my experience, back then you couldn’t find it in a super market because every body made it a home (including myself), I did some research I found out that was a temperature thing but I wasn’t sure. Later I found it in a super market and was so exited it was solid (the air conditioner there) until I get home and it was liquid again hahahaha

Jade Braendle: I’ve been bleaching my hair for 10 plus years. It’s fine, brittle, and curly. I jumped on the coconut oil bandwagon a few years ago and it made my hair feel SO much worse. Now I only use it once every few months after a fresh bleaching. Side note: I live in Michigan so my coconut oil is also a “brick house”

Mlala: My thin, lower porosity hair does NOT like me leaving-in coconut oil. When I started using it because it's all the rave, my strands brittled sooo quickly! I'd already figured out why but it's great that you compiled all of this in a video for everyone. Ty Mell <3

Gloria Rivera: I love you Mel! I have 2b waves and I'm in the process of transitioning. My 3-year-old daughter has 3B curls. I want her to grow up loving her curls and knowing how to take care of them. I was wondering if you can do a video for how to prep style finish kids with undamaged, virgin "unicorn" natural curls. What products could I use for her?

Maria Kadas: I come for the hair education but stay for the bloopers. You're awesome Mell and Amanda!!!!!!

MrsHNKeller: So silly, in a good way. Thank you for explaining the role coconut oil plays in our hair health. I was one who thought my hair did not respond well to products containing coconut oil. I will certainly be giving it another try. ❤

Jamie James: This is such an education. I was in the store, yesterday, and was like...” IDK what to BUY for my HAIR!!!” Mell, thank you for giving us knowledge!!!

Wendy : I’m addicted to coco oil ❤️ my bleached hair loves it. My skin loves it and I love the glow it gives to my skin. Lastly, my coffee creamer is coco. I’m in FL. It stays in between solid and liquid consistency.

Jessica Jefferson: Thank you for this informative video Mell! I love how thorough you are and also your creative delivery lol. Love your channel!

Mama Shiraz: I appreciate this video and I learned the hard way that my hair can’t deal with protein and coconut oil. You did say you love Shea Moistures leave in and I share that sentiment because I’ve also used this product. Another thing I learned about hair, dryness and breakage is that products don’t “stop working”...they build up. The one most harmful ingredient is silicone. Silicone is added to almost all products for slip and fake shine. It’s liquid plastic and literally coats and seals the hair. The reason this is bad is because it seals out moisture and you end up with dry broken hair. Clarifying strips off the silicone but it builds up again. Finding coconut oil, protein and silicone free is nearly impossible!! There are a few good clean product lines and when I switched to them, my hair recovered and I’ve never gone back to horrible products again.

Sue Athenas: Your hair looks amazing!! You are my go to for curly hair info!!! I’m old and have finally come to terms with my curls!! Took me 61 years!! So thankful I first found the curly girl method and in turn found you. All the things you say make sense and thank you Jesus I don’t need to give up my brush!! Thanks Mel!!!

Ashley Vardy: Hey Mell! Have you tried the brand Macadamia Natural Oil? I tried their deep repair mask. It smells amazing left my hair shiny and it helped define my curls. Its pretty thick in consistency though.

Haley: Mell is a hair goddess! I have learned so very much from her. She GENUINELY wants to help and I'd not out to just sell hair products. Mell, we thank you and Seester so much!

meow meow: SO HAPPY I found this channel! I’m a pro cosmetologist and I am learning SOOOO much!

Sara a: Me before watching mel's videos:feeling like i know everything about curly hair, porosity, silcones, sulfates, oils girl i'm an expert! Mell in the videos: it's a myth Me after watching: and iOOOP

Anna Hill: Man I hate the trend of coconut oil as a “moisturizing” ingredient. My hair is fine and it HATES that, especially when it’s a top ingredient. I really do need moisture because my hair tends toward dryness but my god, I feel like most products these days that are intended for “moisture” are full of heavy oils. It’s so exhausting to shop for good conditioners because of this.

Kenda Al Ghabra: MELL!!! I’ve been binge watching your videos and i have so many questions about hair products and how they work! You always talk about how humectants are moisturizing ingredients that bind with water and How Emollients create a layer that traps moisture in the hair so my question here is how do products that have both humectants and Emollients work? like if a product has both Shea butter and glycerin or silicons and glycerin how does that work out for our hairs Is it binding with water or is it creating a layer on top of the hair? Does it matter? What moisturizes our hair, humectants or emollients?

Pon Deck: Yes!!!! Thank you, Mell! A precious few of the products you recommended are also aloe-free... ever since I began to limit or avoid protein, coconut oil, and aloe, especially all together, my curls have been thriving! I have also noticed that chebe can act like a strengthening ingredient for me, so that's out too. Little did I know for ages that I've been slathering strengthening ingredients like coconut oil and aloe on already protein-sensitive hair. I am going to re-introduce smaller molecule proteins eventually, slowly and less frequently. If anyone has experienced protein-overload-like results, I've discovered a couple of protein/aloe/coconut oil-free products from Camille Rose and Kinky Curly were very helpful, sealed with oils like olive, almond, avocado, apricot, & castor, and also pure shea and cocoa butter. XOXO's from the T-Dot!

Debz Persephone West: Happy texture Tuesday Mel! I have gone back to basics at the moment, as recently my hair was coloured hot pink If it wasn't for your fine self, I wouldn't have had a clue! I tell everyone I can to follow you too

Fiona M: Yesss about coconut oil. Speaking of, could you review some sustainable/low waste alternatives like shampoo/conditioner bars, minimal/recycled plastic products (e.g. Aveda)? A lot of zero waste DIY/zero waste products feature coconut oil heavily so interested to see how that is balanced with the rest of the ingredient list/moisture/humectants. You should totally do a collab with @sustainably_vegan who is a curly low waste youtuber and she learned everything about styling her hair from you!

Lucy Ross: I'm trying to start my curly hair journey and your videos are so so helpful! I love them so much! Do you have any affordable product recommendations and advice for normal porosity-fine-2c-3a wavy/curly hair?

Alice Peguero Elsevyf: I really love all your videos, from the beginning of the quarantine, I started the transition and all the information that you put in your videos gave me a really greater knowledge about my hair. I am from Dominican Republic and here most of the people have curly hair and we have many different local brands for wavy, curly and kinky hair. So the most important thing to me is to read the ingredients of the products looking for similar ingredients to the products you have recommended. FYI: Coconut oil here is liquid because we have a very hot weather, basically all year

Star 123: Mell, you did a GREAT job on this video!! Science isn’t my strongest subject but you made this totally understandable

Stephanie S.: This makes so much sense! I followed some crazy pinterest tutorial and put coconut oil on my DRY ass high porosity hair that was already dying of thirst. Thanks for helping me see what I was doing wrong!

karinac1999: I loved this video (like all of them ). Is that the copper or the rose gold? Looks fabulous. I love that you showed your products with and without protein. I wanna do combos for that protein-moisture balance . And Amanda, your makeup always looks good. ❤

The Curl Story: I have been seeing some Instagram posts about coconut oil making some curly hair extra brittle. Thank you for explaining why that might happen. I will experiment with coconut oil as a finishing/sealing oil. Thank you!

Mara: I finally have a logical explanation for my hair not liking coconut oil at all or any heavy oils like that. I have learned so much with your channel. Now I can even properly trim my own curly hair and my daughter's too. The best type of oil blend I have found so far that works for my grade 3/4 porosity hair is the Melanin Multi-Use pure oil blend. As always your videos are coherent and super informative. I'm so glad I found your channel.

Sophia Pen: Thank you for going over protein free products!

Massiel Gonzalez: At the beginning of my curly hair journey, I used to use coconut oil and love it. All of a sudden my hair started to act out and it took me a while to realize it was the coconut oil. All these were a couple of years ago and just NOW I find the true reason!! On the other hand, I just recently discovered that I can use products containing coconut oil only if they are rinsed out products and if I don't use them frequently. I would really really appreciate it if you share all the products that you can come across which doesn't contain coconut oil.

Ayushi Chauhan_DD1040: Hey Mell, lots of love from an Indian curl-girl ... I just love you and your videos.. Thanks for helping all of us out ! I actually wanted to know whether other oils like castor oil, olive oil and tea tree oil would work for low porosity hair with really dry scalp..

Ruth Kuder: I feel like every time I have a question/problem, Mel's Texture Tuesday provides the answer. Amazing! I have been using products with coconut oil for the past two years and have developed a sensitivity. (I believe it is to the coconut oil) I have recently been on the hunt for coconut oil free products. Thanks for the great list Mel! I love getting recommendations from a professional. ❤

Amanda Macaluso: 1. This is my favorite Manes by Mell video! I was cackling the whole time! But also, very informative and answered lots of questions, since I use products which contain coconut oil, and I wasn't sure if I was doing the right thing. (Especially since I don't love coconut oil as a whole, but my hair seems to love it.) 2. This hair color is gooooorgeous.

Suzanne Branch: Would love to hear your experiences with the many various Ouidad products. I've been trying many...there are SO many...and have been pretty happy with them. It's always interesting to hear your sciency analysis of products. Keep up the great work!

Rozanna Yiannakis: I find you so lovely. The information, time and care you give this channel evokes deep respect. It’s a lot of work to consistently deliver such high caliber output.

New Aeon: Thank you for sharing ! Now I understand why using coconut oil last during my hair routine was doing wonders for my bleached hair ! All about that balance ❤️

maranjade: I try to stay away from coconut oil due to how my hair reacts. I use Vitamin E oil on both my skin and hair and absolutely love it. Every so often I'll add tea tree oil as well.

Brittany Craigo: My mom had a coconut allergy, thankfully she grew out of it, but it was so hard to find any kind of skin care, hair care, make up, etc for her. She has flare ups every now and again but now she knows what to cut out when it happens. I still have a question as to wether I should use coconut oil or not and when. I have low porosity hair but it is moisture sensitive. I use products with protein and only condition to detangle but my hair recently has not been doing well in these 70+ dew points.

WavyDiede: Yep, I’m allergic to Cocamidopropyl Betaine. So when I use products with coconut oil in them, my scalp burns and my hair reacts So badly to it. Still trying to find a good Deep conditioner. Thank You for this video, Mell!!!

Shantell Hall: I know Mell mentioned that it's hard for her to get in Canada, but I believe the Not Your Mother's Curl Talk line is coconut free. It does have protein though. It has rice protein based ingredients and is a great line (especially the curl cream ).

Lydia Taylor: You and Amanda are amazing, love you guys. Thanks for the recommendation for coconut oil free products

Aysha P: I was just wondering why people say their hair "hates coconut oil" today! This couldn't have come at a better time

Short.andcurly: I don’t care for applying plain coconut oil on my hair, but I’ve never noticed any issues with it or other coconut derived ingredients in a formulated product ‍♀️‍♀️ If I had any coconut oil right now it would definitely be a liquid

DEE A: I tried the aveda and Shea moisture and they didn’t make my hair looks good. Then I found a brand named Tgin and I fall in love with how my hair looks they have some ingredients of coconut oil but they’re protein free. 2c/3b curls

Inês Ribeiro: Absolutely LOVE your style! Your hair and makeup looks AMAZING! I was planning to try out the Maui Moisture line, but there's so many types that I'm kinda lost Could you please review the Maui Moisture products?

Anna Komnatna: I have low porosity hair and most of the time I use coconut oil as scalp mask, because I do not see any good results from coconut oil on my hair (except when I used some glycerin leave in or something like that). Now I know why, thank you Mell!

Xayide Enguivuck: I just wanted to stop by to THANK YOU. I have been following your videos for just about two weeks and my life has changed. No kidding. The Denman brush, the blowdrying routine, the products I use and how to use them. With just a few tips my hair has improved drastically. And I don't add much time to my routine, although I'm still slow with the Denman. But I'm sure I'll soon get the hang of it. So, this is not coconut related, but I just wanted to say THANK YOU.

Shantell Hall: Thank you for explaining the difference between Aveda's Confixor and Flaxseed gel. I was just wondering that the other day.

Joasia De Leon: I love your Stash of products! slowly building mine! Good to know what you like and works for you!

Melanie: My hair - 3A, thick/coarse, mid-high density and colour treated - looooooves coconut oil. I started using it as a “pre-poo” that I leave in for a few hours before washing at the recommendation of my stylist who describes my hairs natural state as “thirsty” lol I saturate my hair with it, and shampoo once and I’m good to go so I was very surprised when I recommended it to friends and they cursed me for needing to wash their hair half a dozen times afterwards. My the coconut oil makes my hair feel so much softer, more hydrated, I get better curl definition. To make a long story short, I will never surrender my coconut oil lol

EmKn: I THINK I FINALLY GET IT. Thanks Mell. When I add coconut oil-based products when my hair is wet and conditioned, it turns out better. I guess this explains it ‍♀️ Does this mean that coconut oil in shampoo or conditioner might not be great for the type of hair you’ve described? Keep it in stylers or as a last step?

mrahzzz: AGH thank you!! I 100% ate up the "protein overload" signs I got from using coconut oil as "coconut oil is high in protein" (which was really sad to me after seeing one pic of a woman using coconut oil to create the most _gorgeous_ shiny hair). I tried it while I had really healthy, no extreme and probably pretty balanced, relatively thick, virgin hair, and got all those awful results of dry and brittle while also being oddly greasy and really difficult to wash out. Recently I retried coconut oil and it seemed to mildly benefit my hair. The rub? Since that first attempt at using coconut oil, I probably damaged my hair with the myth that it's good and fine to leave hair wet for long periods of time, and that it's better to just plop and air dry than it is to defuse. Coconut oil that I recently applied probably helped offset the damage I've done to my hair from keeping it wet overnight as a way of trying to avoid damage - it probably kept some water out and protein in compared to my bad streak of having all the water I can get soaking in my hair for as long as I could. Mell, if my hair could talk, she'd thank you profusely for stopping me from torturing her more. I still feel mildly confused with all the ingredients etc (and like, damn, am I low porosity? Or low to medium? Or just straight up medium...???), but you've got me well on my way to really embracing and doing the best for my hair. Next up: more research on whether or not humectants will work well for me. Initial testing says no, but maybe with more appropriate products and application order, they'll really benefit me... good ol' HHEO!

Samantha Moss: Hi Mel, another awesome video, thank you Just a quick question about flax seed gels... Is flax seed a protein? You mentioned the Aveda flax seed gel does not have protein in it but I though flax seed was a protein.... I'm so confused, my brain is swirly

Cait Chen: WOW very helpful video! I've been researching the whole day about how everything is related and this video just ties everything together. Love your videos just subscribed! :)

Gail Johnson: Mel, I love you, your seester, and your videos. Do you have any advice for those of us dealing with ‘chemo curls’? My chemo was 2 1/2 years ago, but my hair is still pretty wavy. It’s also much thinner than it was. I haven’t had it colored since it has come back in. I’m 68 y/o now so with the pandemic I’m really hesitant to visit my hairdresser. Hair is still pretty dark but has some silver throughout. There is one ‘chunk’ in particular on the left side of my head over my ear that is even more coarse and straight than the rest. It will not hold water at all. Does that mean it’s low porosity? I’ve never had curls before and I’ve been following your advice on doing the crunching technique which really helps. But I’m really confused as to which products would be best for me. I have been air-drying and not using any heat at all. (I usually don’t have the energy anyway) ha! Sorry for the long post but I would really appreciate any help you can offer. Thanks!

Isabela Steffanello: Love the video, Mel, as always But I have a questions, can we use coconut oil on a scalp massage?? Or, as an emolient product it won't be good there??

Josy Shen: Thank you so much for this brilliant channel. I have been looking after my curly hair wrong all this years. I watched your videos, followed your tips and my hair looks ace now. Many thanks love.

Sam Bednar: Can you do a video with more specifics on HHEO? Ingredients to look for in each step, etc?

Grete: Years back when the coconut oil trend started I did oil masks religiously for probably 2 years or more bc that was literally what everyone told me to do. Every influencer swore by it. And it literally did nothing for my hair, if anything it made it more dry and i never understood it. No one was talking about it.

Rose Barr: Hello Mell! My name is Rose & I have a 13 year old daughter with gorgeous hair like yours. Until I discovered your YouTube channel, I couldn’t figure out how to care for or style her hair. I’ve been following you for less than a year but have learned so much! I wanted to send you a message to say thank you so much for helping me learn & teach her as well. Embracing her natural curls has helped her confidence & that is AWESOME! I’m sending before & after pics to your fb & ig so you can see the transformation. She wants to start to gain length now so we are working on that with some biotin & vitamin E supplements thank you again for sharing your knowledge & making her adventure so much fun! You are an amazing human!

Afsheen Ashraf: I remember back when I started taking care of my hair everyone would keep talking about how Coconut oil added protein to the hair and since my hair is protein sensitive I stopped using the coconut oil which I was devoted to only to see my hair deteriorate... Anyway I realised that was a load of bull pretty early on and now coconut oil concoction is my bae

Special K D: My hair would be feeling soft after my wash and as soon as I put the coconut oil in it felt dry and rough. It took me a while to figure out that's what it was. It is okay if mixed in different products but to use as straight oil, no. I love pure organic olive oil.

Lluvia Broadwell: I love your videos! I have a question, I just went lighter with my hair to cover some grays - It obviously has damaged my hair to an extent. I only wash my hair once a week. Should I be doing something more often right now since is be bleached out recently? Also, what do you recommend?? Thank you so much for your input. <3

Nadene Manuel: I've been wondering about this topic for so long. I'm so excited that you are covering it. I love Texture Tuesday's❤️

Meli: My coconut oil is in liquid form ALL year long. I live in Honduras and I'm melting as I write. The temperature here right now is 37 C/99F and it stays around that range throughout the year. Thanks for the info; I´ll introduce coconut oil to my routine and see how it goes. Saludos desde Honduras!

Reina Fepuleai: I love this! I'm a Pacific Islander, and we love our coconuts!!! This information is so helpful.Thank you for sharing. And your look is beautiful! ❤️

Taylor Quinlan: Hey Mel! For a upcoming video can you do a product battle for curl mix vs controlled chaos? They were both featured on shark tank as curl enhancing products. They’re a little pricy for me to justify buying outright with a good review.
