How I transformed my dull natural hair into smooth, shiny natural hair! My hair started out super matted and dry looking, but with a few simple tweaks, I ended up with the glossiest, shiniest hair I've ever experienced! All you need to achieve your hair's optimum shine potential, are a few items that you probably already have in your home!

I also show you two easy ways to test your tap for Hard Water! Hard water is the arch nemesis of smooth shiny hair. If you have hard water it will be very difficult to achieve your optimum shine potential. So if you find yourself using product after product with little to no results, it may be an issue with your water, rather than your hair or the products!

Enjoy the vid! And I hope it helps!

What'S up guys so, a couple weeks ago I noticed my hair, wasn't looking or feeling so great. It felt super stiff a little hard and it looked really matted dry and dull. My ends especially looked and felt horrible. I'M definitely in need of a trim, but that's gon na have to wait until another time you can catch my trimming tutorial here if you're interested now, of course, this is old hair anyway. So some of this dryness is to be expected, but dang homie not this much. Something was up, so I decided to try something new. It was time to cleanse my hair and while I would normally use my homemade clay wash, I wanted to step up to the plate and really clarify and strip the hair completely. I could use an apple cider, vinegar rinse for this, but I haven't used a shampoo in over three years and I was really anxious to try something new for a change. So I decided to try a shampoo to really strip my hair for the first time in over three years. Well, I already love the Trader Joe's teach feet, tingle conditioner, so why not test out the shampoo? If it's anything like the conditioner, I was sure I'd love. It so I hopped in the shower, and of course my hair is already in sections working one section. At a time I wet the section thoroughly, I'm grabbing the tea tree, tingle shampoo enough for the section after smelling it. Of course, I coat my hair and gentle downward strokes. Clearly, I'm excited it turns out that this shampoo has some slip, so I was able to do a bit of detangling now holding my ends taut, so I don't create tangles. I massage my scalp to clarify with the shampoo still in my hair, I grab the tea tree, tingle conditioner and add that to the section as well gently massaging it in and then I rinse out the shampoo and conditioner mix. I added the conditioner before rinsing out the shampoo so that, as the shampoo is being rinsed out, my hair will remain moisturized without being too stripped and vulnerable. So my hair feels pretty soft already, but I'm still going to go back in once more with the conditioner. For a proper application and rinse the product out now I twist the hair all in one section, underneath the water stream and wrap it into a little bun to protect it from tangles, now grab the next section and repeat the process. What the section thoroughly add enough shampoo to coat the section work it in in gentle downward strokes, making sure to cleanse the scalp add conditioner to replenish the moisture lost then rinse, the shampoo and conditioner out, and now we do a proper conditioning treatment working the conditioner In and rinsing it out twist up the section and secure it into a small button, now just repeat the same process over each section of hair, I actually really enjoyed using the shampoo. It was really gentle had a bit of slip and it got my hair and scalp super clean. I may have to return to the shampoos more often so when each section has been cleansed and conditioned, we go back in working one bun. At a time, I release the section and I'm doing a final rinse using cold distilled water. Why distilled water? Well, I was wondering if the water from my faucets was hard or soft water hard water makes your hair feel sticky, matted and look dull over time. It also interferes with the effectiveness of your hair product, so I wanted to test out the effects that a hundred percent pure water, with no minerals would have a mare to see whether it helped my hair or not, and distilled water is the ultimate soft water. So to do this, a final rinse with the distilled water to clear away any minerals left on my strands from my homes, tap water and oh, it was cold following up with my aloe vera juice. Of course, this is a hundred percent pure aloe vera juice, not diluted at all. I spray this all over the section to help strengthen and close my hair's cuticle promoting shine. Next, it's my homemade hair and body oil mixture, a small amount to cover the entire section from roots to ends. This seals, the water and aloe vera juice mixture into my hair and then twist up the section wrapping it into a bun to protect it from tangling. And now I do the same thing to the next section: reluctantly rinsing with the cold distilled water covering the section generously with pure aloe vera juice, not diluted. And then I seal with my homemade hair and body oil mixture twisting the section up and into a small button, now repeat this process over each section of hair. There'S so many things that I did differently here that I normally don't do. Obviously, the shampoo to clarify the hair, the pure distilled water, to rinse, the pure aloe vera juice, not diluted this time, I just lift it in my hair and, lastly, I usually rinse out the hair oil, but again this time I left it in what resulted from All of these changes was extremely soft, shiny, bouncy and moisturized hair. So I wanted to know for sure if it was the water that helped me get these results. So let me show you a couple easy ways to check for hard water. The first way is with hard water test strips pretty simple, just test a sample of your water and see where it matches on the soft and hard water scale. So I tested a sample from my faucet and found out that, indeed, my tap water is soft water. It falls right between the first two colors on the scale, so that means I have nothing to worry about, and I don't need to filter my water to prevent mineral buildup on my hair and, of course, for comparison purposes. I made a cup of hard water at home using a slab of limestone to make sure these test strips actually work. So here's what hard water would look like with the test strips another easy way to test. The difference is using your every a dish. So here's my cup of soft water just squeeze a bit of dish soap into the cup of water. All I get here are these little bubbles. The bubbles represent the minerals in the water. Soft water will have very few minerals. On the other hand, hard water will become extremely cloudy full of bubbles, because it's rich with minerals you'll be able to tell immediately if you have hard or soft water based on how cloudy or clear your water is after adding the dish soap. So again my water was soft, so I can't really attribute the distilled water from my results other than the fact that it was cold, cold, water shocks, the hair cuticles, causing it to close making the hair appear shinier. So the shininess of my hair would definitely have to be the combination of the clarifying shampoo, the pure aloe vera juice and the hair oil and, of course, using cold water for the final rinse to shock your hair and you doesn't hurt either. So I will definitely be doing this again, I'm completely in love with the tea tree. Tingle shampoo. I hope this helps guys give it a try if you're looking to add more shine to your hair, oh and I'm just putting my hair in a bun because we went bike riding that day. Alright, so I'll see you guys next time bye check out some more haircare videos to the left and if you're into daily vlogs, you can click the link to the right I'll, see you guys there

Nicktunes: I have been using the tea tree tingle shampoo and conditioner since the beginning of my hair journey and I absolutely love it! Never thought to add the conditioner directly when adding the shampoo! Definitely going to give this a try! Thanks for the tutorial!

Cee Dee: In my humble estimation, your hair videos are wonderful! You have the perfect balance of pertinent information, video technique, speech, and humor. You're the only one I follow. And I watch your vlogs as well (love them). I transitioned (for the final time) 3 years ago. I have a problem wuth my hair growing out shorter on top, but your help has been invaluable. Thank you so much for sharing yourself and your beautiful family with us!

queretana20: This was such an interesting and informative video!! Love how your hair turned out. I also love how you continue to go above and beyond with the videos that you make. You can really tell that you love what you do! You're the best, Whitney!!!

LisaLaw1231: I have been using the Traders Joe's Tea Tree Tingle Shampoo and Conditioner for the last 4 months and I love it! Prior to that I was using the Organics Tea Tree Mint. I never thought of shampooing adding conditioner, washing it out and adding conditioner again for more moisture. I will try it this weekend and see if it makes a difference. Thanks for the tip!

Kelli Sees: Well, Texas water is defiantly hard. A few weeks ago, I started seeing the effects of it on my hair and skin. Filtering the tap water really will help your hair if you do have hard water.

doris motley: when I do my cold water rinse, I use the sink...there's no way that cold water is touching my naked body!

Dreame: i love the fact that you are so detailed and informal with great information on how to take care of your hair properly. you cover the basics and things i would never expect would be apart of hair care. thank you!!

Kaela Bryant: You have perfect curls. No heat damage no damage period. In love

Piper Anthony: Lately, I've been putting conditioner on my hair BEFORE putting the shampoo on. I figured my hair would still get clean enough, but the layer of conditioner would help to protect it from TOO MUCH stripping. Also, I only apply the shampoo to my scalp and close the roots of my hair, and when I rinse, the shampoo washes lightly over the rest of my hair just enough to clean it without being too harsh on my ends. You taught me a new trick, though! I will now hold my hair taught while shampooing. That will help SO MUCH because I always get matting near my scalp when I'm washing. Super Whitney saves the day again! Thanks so much. <3

Deb JB: Awesome job Whitney!!! Your videos are always so informative & very practical, useful & helpful!!! Thank you.

Teasha Stewart: Shampooing the hair and scalp are great and I don't know who told us to stop using it. Not using shampoo is like not using soap to wash your hands.

Jacqueline Umeh: Whitney, you're amazing! Thanks so much for all the tips that you gave in this video and for all the videos that you've posted. I actually skipped watching this video but came back to watch it after noticing that your hair was shinier in the videos posted after this, right down to your most recent video.

Claudine.J: If I had to do that, I will put a chair in the bathtub and sit while doing what you're doing...What a routine!!! Still love watching them xx

naturalnicole: Thanks for this video I would have never thought to apply my conditioner with the shampoo still in but the way you explained it made sense!!  Whitney You Rock!

Geminellie06: OMG! I love natural loose hair (urs especially), but I am not gonna miss the washing process! I have mid-back length hair and hated how much maintenance it requires. I decided to start locs a few weeks ago! Loving the freedom so far :-)

LatiaTV: I Love You Hair Videos. You Were Definitely One of My Inspirations to Go Natural and I Am Getting Closer & Closer to Being One Year Natural!. Thank You Whitney for Being So AMAZING!.

ME CEE: Thank you for the DIY hard water test along with all your other DIY'S, they are sooo helpful

Naturalicity: You are an excellent instructor!!  Thank you for the great info.

MyNameIsWhitney: I've used undiluted aloe vera juice and cold rinses for quite some time now, and I will say that those two things up my shine factor like crazy. The difference was immediately noticeable. Thanks for another great vid!

TheRah74: You are a goddess of hair! The condition of my hair has improved so much, thanks to some of the information that you have shared.

AnkhordumenI: The things we black girls have to do to have good healthy hair....My God....

Robin McMillian: Two words: THIS WORKS! I tried this method when I washed my hair this week, and it's so shiny! I have sandy red/brown hair and it never ever shines (unless I use heat). I'm so glad you made this video! Thanks @***** :) :) :)

DeRob55: I just love you girl! As soon as I finished this video I got a glass of water and dropped a few drops of dish detergent in it to check my water, lol. I'm happy to report that my water is soft, yay!! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.

Maria🌿: Love that trick of putting the conditioner on top of the shampoo thanx for the tip Whitney :)

Amanda: You just explained my hair this week in the intro: dull, lifeless, and starting to get matted luv the video!!

Samantha White: Thank you for responding to my question about hard water! I ended up buying a water filter 2 months ago and my hair is a lot better!

Aseaba's Place: Great video, Whitney! Gorgeous results :)

Dudegrowing NapsBlog: Never tried the distilled water that way, i use it to moisturize my hair during the week and for my DIY leave in conditioners and deep conditioners :))))) Will definitely give it a try, thanks for sharing

gensai93: If you have hard water, it us better to buy a shower head filter to soften the water. Regular shampoos will not remove hard water build-up. Chelating shampoos are made to remove the minerals.

Keenya Williams: Great video and very informative. I love doing the aloe Vera and oil rinse , work great on my hair as well. As always well done @***** Thanks for sharing what you have learned.

simplydebra: Hard water has done a number on my hair. I had a shower filter in my last residence & it was great. I also noticed much softer hair and skin when I showered at a friend's house where they have a whole-house water filtration system.

Curls of Innocence Hair, Health, & Homeschooling: Wow, thanks for this video! I have been always wondering if my water was hard or soft. My hair acts weird sometimes, and I have to know. I've also been wanting to try that Trader Joe's shampoo and conditioner; everyone loves it!

ZenLifeTV: Hey Whitney, I would like for you to do a video on low and high porosity, and I'm just curious to see how your hair takes to moisture. Thanks great informative video as always:)

R Oki: You are awesome! you drove 45 mins one way and back to get that limestone for this video. I appreciate your hard work and research! I also have the TJ TTT shampoo and it is awesome!

Deborah _: I love how your videos are like a Science lesson in combination with hair care! Great video

JoyToTheWorld: The soap test was great!  It revealed that I have soft water!  So now I can look into other reasons as to why my hair is often dull and lifeless. Thanks Whitney!

Raye Hall: Hi! I'm highly curious to know how you managed your hair when it was as short as mine, like after the big chop and barely growing out short. Thanks! Love your videos  by the way.

EricaFamojure: This is the video that took you 45 mins out of your way to get limestone?! Ma'am, you are one dedicated vlogger! I appreciate you! =)

TheTonyaNicole: Great tips!! I just tried a COLD water rinse to my hair after deep conditioning and the curls are popping!! I can't handle ice cold showers so I rinsed in the sink lol :-)

sketchnwhatevr: I swear, you're like my goldmine of hair info. Thank you soooo much!

Jasmine Barrett Szantyr: wow whitney i love how open minded you've become with trying new products!

P: Anytime I have any problems dealing with my hair I just think I bet Naptural has a video on it. Thanks so much for these vids theyre so helpful :)

Shakila L: You are giving us so much knowledge in EVERY video! I love it! This 2014 video is still relevant!

lanh: Hi! I really like what you're doing, your videos are a huge help and a lot of inspirations for my hair daily. I went natural thanks to you so come see the results on my first video i posted kiss from france :)

BENDY_FLEXI_2000: I shocked my hair with cold water and when I looked at it today it was so shiny I never thought it could look like that. Thanks for the tips

Dena Booze: Tea Tree Tingle is my family's favorite shampoo. I was hesitant at first but like your video shows it gives a gentle cleanse. I am going to try your method of adding the conditioner before rinsing the shampoo. Thanks for the video...awesome as usual.

mara.iara: I am *definitely* trying ALL of this! Thank you so much, Whitney

Kimberly Ann Parker: It turned out great and looks so shiny. I need to try this method and test my water because my hair has been very dry lately.

Jenelle V.: Thank you for this. Here I am in 2020 looking for ways to test my tap water and what is the best water for my hair and this has greatly helped me!

TiniTaylor: Interesting. I'm going to check to see if Lubbock has hard water (even though I know they do. lol) One of the things that hate about going to school in Lubbock is the hard water. I love going home (Dallas) because I don't have to worry about washing my hair in hard water. ETA: I checked my shower water (I use a shower filter while I'm at school) and it barely has any minerals. The faucet water, however (I don't use a filter) is cloudy as hayell. Lol! Thanks Whitney!

Blurb: Aaaaahhhhhh Whit!!! You did such an awesome job with this video. I love that you tried something different and you changed it up a bit, because to be honest sometimes I'm a bit lazy to make my shampoo lol. And thanks for giving an easier way to check what type of water you have in the pipe (cuz I wasn't going to get those strips). You always do such a good job with your videos. I just want to say THANK YOU! I appreciate it. Sending you love from Toronto ;)

Nakita Kelsey: OMG You are the BEST Channel (as well as your other 2 channels) EVER!!! I cannot believe you drove for an hour for 5 seconds of the video!! You're amazing.  Your efforts were not lost, I learned something :) Thanks Whitney :)

shirlagreen: Distilled water is my hair's best friend. I learned several months ago. Our water from the shower caused my hair to mat and tangle with lots of hair loss. Thanks for posting.

Arika S: OMG thank you sooo much for making this video!!! Ever since i moved my hair has been dull and incredibly dry and i have constantly been changing my hair routeen. But after this video i realized that the water i use to wash my hair is full of lime So now I'm going to have to use filtered water to wash my hair so hopefully my hair improves

ymb6987: Great tips always!  Your shiny hair is the business!!!

Jaz: I'm a serious clay girl and the moment I tried to switch it up and use my unused bottle of trader joe's tt shampoo, all of my coils were obliterated. my ends looked like bushes and my hair felt like hard brush bristles. no lie. I'm really anal, well consistent about my hair care and to see it go down the drain even temporarily from a shampoo...uhm no. shoot even the tt conditioner I followed with didn't feel the same and didn't add a piece of moisture. shame. but I'm glad you were pleased with it.

Ashley: so much information. i needed this.My 2 year transition is coming to an end soon :)

Arya Dil: Hello dear Whitney, for days I've been using aloe vera juice to moisturise my hair but everytime after using it my hair becomes sticky, dull and almost cannot do any finger detangling :( Of course I use oil straight after to seal but my hair remains sticky and dull. I have straight hair but still use a lot of your advices which are very useful. I also sent you a message via youtube in January but I don't know if you received it or ever got it. I'd be very glad if you could reply!!! I have more questions!!! Pls pls pls!!! Best regards, Dil

Valencia Gore: Love both Trader Joes products...works so well for my hair and very inexpensive.

Ashley Bellmar-Miller: Very, very, very informative Whit!  I will definitely give these a try.  You are really good at this ;)

LaurelsCurls: Wonderful! Thanks for sharing. I love using aloe vera gel and juice in my DIY mixes, but I've not tried spraying it on the way you do in the shower, I'll give it a shot :)

larjohns3: I love using those shampoo products! I start using then 4yrs ago & the price is affordable. Their moisturizing shampoo & conditioner is an excellent product as well.

B-Utiful Tresses: Great info. I'm definitely going to try the hard water test.

avivadiiva: Chemicals CAN, indeed, be our friends LOL! Personally I love Shea Moisture moisture retention shampoo for clarifying; it's the only shampoo that I've found that works for me. It's still very mild and my hair doesn't feel stripped to the bone.

taurigirl: I love this vid! Will def. check for hard water now! Thought you would use the Carol's Daughter products ~_~ I enjoyed those vids and would love to see you use the products more and the more range of what they can do!

Drea: Great tip! Good to know that I have soft water in my apartment! I did the dish soap test

Nicky Nick: Wow...God answered my prayers! It may sound like I'm over exaggerating but I have been experiencing all the same things you mention about your hair and shedding. I'm going to check for hard water and also try the distilled water. However I do have a question, I do the vinegar cleanse, rinse, and then wash my hair in sections with moisturizing shampoo, which I only wash once, then condition, rinsing with cool water. Is the vinegar cleanse and shampoo too much? Thanks in advance! God bless!

LaWanda Singleton: Great video beautiful. I am about to test our water too. I definitely will be trying this. Thanks for sharing :-)

sheba1121: Yesss Whitney!!! I love it!! I bought the conditioner from trader joe and was wondering about the shampoo myself.

NaturalLuxeDiva: Thank you so much for this awesome information. I am definitely going to try this :-)

Salem B: Great video! It's really informative and I plan to use the dish soap trick to check my water

by lyn: Love your channel. I admire you never use heat. I am a twa one year today. I do not want to use flat iron or cut my hair only because I could never retain my length of hair with a perm. Watch you two years before going natural. Your a Joy to watch and learn about hair. Thinks for answer my question for how long to wear a wash n go  when my hair finally get long. Your hair is gorgeous.

trojanqtie: Thanks for showing the easy dish washing liquid test. I just tested my water. It's soft! :-)

Lilia Deterville: Great video! Very informative! Always a pleasure to view one of your vids!

Jasmine Gooden: I will try these tests. I recently did a blog post on how I thought the water in my new area was affecting my hair. I'm not sure if its hard water, or the amount of fluoride in the water.

SoulfulRose: Thanks for the insight Naptural85. Also, I love your personality :)

Shaprice M: I just love your hair videos!!!! It makes me want to go wash my hair now

byoung4eva1: Now i'm gonna check for hard water, thanks for the simple time Naptural (^-^)

Kayla J: awesome video! super informative!

Holly Days: Gorgeous hair! Thx for sharing

Daffnee: Great video! I will definitely test my water at home for hard water. Thanks for sharing!!!

Naturalle Drea: Thanks for sharing!! I'll have to test my water and try that routine out for myself!!

Taryn: Wow! I never thought I'd see the day when #Naptural85  would use shampoo again! Ditto about the aloe and cold water and oil for retaining moisture. But no thanks to returning to shampoos for me.

Sweet C: Wow, and I thought I knew all there is to know about washing natural hair. I thought shampoo was only for the scalp; do you always put it on the entire length of hair? Can distilled water be a good moisturizer to spritz your hair with before sealing it daily?

curlquest79: I love their tee tree shampoo and conditioner, I'll definitely will have to try the aloe vera juice along with my regimen.

kinkybynature: Update us on another hair journey vid. Show clips and pics from your twa until now. I would really love to see that. U are gorgeous Whitney!

Addie05: I had no idea about the dish liquid test. I am going to try that...now! Thank you!!

Arlyne Andrevil: Babe… This looks like it took forever!! >_< Being natural is so hard when your lazy! Lol, Fantastic video though! I really admire your dedication and quality!

BeeBee Hassan: Orange peel powder is good for adding shine as well. Just add it to your conditioner

Kay Von Kent: best hair washing tutorial ever!! Don't think ill ever detest wash day again. Thanks Nap

beautymakeupstyle: So informative! Thanks.

Lifesabeast: Great video Whitney! Very helpful! Tfs!

Sherri Gordon: Hopefully one day I'll get to try the Tea Tree Tingle. But for now, all the naturalistas keep the Trader Joe's cosmetic shelf pretty cleared. Lol.

hahasarcasim: Thanks for the information. It's offical you rock! I really need to test my water, but I think I know what it is already.

Kai E: Thanks ! Awesome video as usual =)

lhamilt: Whit, I gave that Trader Joes shampoo and conditioner a whirl...and it is the truth! I agree that it clarifies extremely well and liked following up with the conditioner while the shampoo was still in my hair. And the price??? Sooooo much cheaper than most hair products. Two happy thumbs up!
