I’m Robin James. My YouTube channel is a destination for men’s grooming; looking at hair, skincare and fragrance.

I make videos showing how to achieve different hairstyles and haircuts; exploring grooming products; and reviewing men's fragrances.

There are so many different types of shampoo out there, but which is the best one for you and your hair type, hello hi. How are you i'm robin welcome back or welcome to my youtube channel this little world right here is man from self. If you like, hair product reviews, grooming, skincare, fragrance and videos like this very one, then chances are yes, you are going to love it around here. Please do press subscribe right now? Okay, this is episode. 10 of my hair products guide series really a deep dive into the world of hair products, helping you to find the best products for you and your hair and really help to save you money. Now it's been a while, since i did episode nine that was on hair powders actually back in the summer, but this one i want to talk to you a bit about what shampoo is. Maybe look a little at sulfate. Are they bad? Should you care and then find different shampoos within categories? I have got them all here: um i've got a detox, shampoo, i've got scrubs, i've got thickening, i've got volume, i've got anti-dandruff, i've got repair and i've got some shampoo bars. Okay, so, first up what is a shampoo? A shampoo is a cleanser, a cleanser for your hair and for your scalp. It isn't just the hair. It'S also about the scalp. It'S going to help to remove dirt oil, excess sebum, which is the oil which is naturally produced by the glands, the sebaceous glands, which we do need. It helps to waterproof the hair and also the scalp. But when there's too much of a buildup of this it can start to smell, it can also attract more dirt. It'S not great, so a shampoo is going to help to remove that. But not all shampoos are created equally different shampoos. Do that to different extents. They also have different additives in them to really start to target different issues you might have, and some shampoo, some shampoos are just by themselves and then some come with a shampoo and conditioner. So whilst the shampoo will cleanse the conditioner tends to start to put some of this stuff back in that the shampoo might have pulled out. So maybe more moisturizing properties or maybe more things to protect the hair, um or maybe to add shine. So you've got one which is cleaning and one which is um targeting. Let'S call that conditioning no sulfates sulfates are the big bad boys of the shampoo world, or are they um? No sulfates are surfactants, meaning that they create this foam uh that you'll get in a shower. Gel you'll get those in like a fairy liquid, a detergent and what they do. Is they create this surface to hold on to that oil and to hold on to that dirt to then, when it's rinsed away? Take that all away, so really they are doing a job, but some may say that they can sometimes do that too much and they start to strip the hair of the natural oils and actually pull too much out um straight up. I'M not bothered i'm not bothered by sulfates. I do think they're there to do a job um. I have fairly normal. What is normal, uh, hair and scalp, and i've never had an issue with them, but you may have a sense to scalp. You may have problems with certain sulfate containing shampoo, so just listen to your own hair and listen to your scalp and work out. What is best for you, okay, starting with a very clean scalp and hair i've got this one. This is a detox shampoo and this one's by american crude. Now i've been working with american crew this year on a launch of some of their products, including this one, and this is really really great. Now what this is going to do is to gently remove any buildup of oil or hair products, so i would use this um if i've been using oil based products, maybe once a week, but if i've not, then maybe once every second week. I really do use this as a bit of a treatment. Much like you might do, a clay face, mask you've, got this clay shampoo here and also it's got little exfoliating portals particles which are from coconut shell to ensure that you're removing that excess buildup and also to remove any dead skin cells. So this is a really great resetting shampoo and if you are trying different hair products always start with clean hair and a clean, scalp you'll then see what that product does. So this is a go-to for me just to really help reset, and i will link this down below, so you can check it out. Also. I have this on the brand page on man from self.com all the american crew products, that i've tried with my reviews and also with your reviews if you've left them right there. Also american crew really upped their game recently at the packaging. This is made from eighty percent post consumer recycled plastic, always a bit of a twister in my head there, and also it's created from eighty percent, naturally derived ingredients, it's vegan and it's silicone free, so really they are pushing towards the future, and i think this is A really great product to try, okay, so moving from, and the clay properties and the exfoliating to something which is just in on that scrub. Now scrub products are again really great to exfoliate, but they're also really good to add a bit of volume to the hair. This is one of my absolute favorites. This is big. This is created from sea salt you're going to see here, there's also some sort of lime, essential oils in this. So, oh hello got that my mate, so it does smell incredible, but it also really gives you this huge hair, god that doesn't taste good. Let'S just get my man from self mug lush may smell amazing, but it doesn't taste too good, and so this has got sea salt in it, which really does help to exfoliate the scalp it's also going to build in and that volume in the hair. Much like a sea salt spray would do so. I absolutely love this one perfect for volume and perfect for exfoliation, also kristoff robin um, a french hairstylist who i've met. Who is incredible, we actually had dinner um. This is such a name drop. We actually had dinner. Just at the bottom of the eiffel tower, it was incredible, his store was amazing and i tried it from his products. This was a couple years ago, but this scrub. This is a thickening paste, but it also helps to scrub so a really great option there. So from scrubs to thickening, if you're a guy with fine hair hi, that's me or you're someone that just wants to ensure you're looking after that hair and making it as thick as you possibly can, then there are products there. Nioxin is one of my absolute favorite products, so much so that i've now got it in this huge one and i just sort of start to top up the shampoo and the conditioner. This is all about creating the optimal conditions on the scalp, so essentially skin care for the hair, and it also helps to reduce hair, breakage and hair loss and just ensure that that scalp is at its optimal conditions for hair growth, and i really love this. I swear by it. I'Ve used it for years and there are other sort of like caffeine shampoos again caffeine shampoos, work by stimulating the scalp and really ensuring that blood goes into that area into the follicle to boost hair growth. Do they work um. I'Ve got articles of man from self.com about them again. I think if you find something that works, stick with it, but caffeine shampoos are a bit of a um a bit of a no for me. Um vichy has launched durcos i've just started using this. This is energizing um, so again to increase the strength of hair to minimize breakage, which in turn then helps reduce hair loss, love this so from thickening to volume. If you've got limp lifeless hair and you want to really boost it, then there are volume shampoos, ocean, mist, sasha one is fantastic. I have recommended this to my mom. I'Ve recommended it to a couple of friends um and they love it. This is so so great. There'S always a deal on this again. I will link them all down below in the description. This is like a sea salt spray in a shampoo, so kind of like that. Although that lush one gives you all that volume, this will also smooth it. So it's not gon na feel too um brittle. It'S not gon na feel like it's just really full of texture. It'S gon na make it big. You can then go on to style, and it's incredible. I absolutely love this, so the shampoo and the conditioner so perfect for getting more height into that here. Okay from someone that might want volume to someone that maybe struggles a bit with dandruff now dandruff is so common. It can be caused by an over oily scalp, but it can also be caused by a dry scalp, and it then creates these little flakes which come off. You can also get dandruff on your eyebrows. It'S the same sort of thing. So don't worry. There are products out there and bulldog really budget-friendly brand. Also has this uh anti-dandruff shampoo? I really like it. It'S basic. It'S to the point it does. What it's supposed to bulldog one of those brands are silicone, free and they're. Also, there's no sulfates in this. So if, if that is something you care about, you could try this out pretty sure this is jujubak, yes, juju bark, which actually helps to reduce those flakes on the scalp um. This doesn't have a conditioner with it. They'Ve said that guys tend not to use conditioners. So they've just gone with a shampoo and there are sort of conditioning properties in this. I would say see how you feel, but you might want to use this and then go on and use a conditioner to maybe target. But if any conditioners are making your hair feel overly soft, overly silky, overly flyaway, then they might not be the right ones. For you, from dandruff to repairing a lot of guys now are sort of dyeing their hair or they're using a lot of heat on the hair, and that can cause a lot of stress on the hair and the scalp. So you need something you need something to repair the hair, and this one is maria neela structure. Repair maria neela is a fantastic brand from stockholm. I'Ve used a lot of their products um. I used their sort of everyday shampoo, conditioner, and then i've tried this. My hair, isn't you may not believe this hugely damaged? Yes, i use a lot of products. Yes, i use a lot of heat, but i also do look after it, but if you are looking for a bit of repair, this could be a good shape for you. It'S going to help to rebuild the hair, it's going to help to protect it and it will also help to soften damaged hair. So that's a really good shape and again something you might not need to use absolutely every day and if you do wonder how. How often to use a shampoo i've done videos on that i've done two one very recently and one ages ago, so give that a watch and i'll help you and but a repairing shampoo is such a good shape for maybe like once a month once a quarter. Whatever you need, especially if you've got color treated hair this one, i'm pretty sure you can use this color. Yes, you can, you can use it with a color treated hair, it's also 100 vegan and animal friendly. So there you go um. The third type is the ones that i'm i'm not fussed about and they're shampoo bars, but they're the best for the environment in terms of packaging. These are earth kind, shampoo, bar and also conditioning bar. Also, they tend to be um sort of sulfate free vegan. All those good things and the bad bad things removed, and but these are great for someone who is really eco-conscious and wants something that is going to work as a shampoo, but without all that excess uh. These are great. I had one before this is a new one. You just work it into your hands with a bit of water and then work through. I like them, but i don't love them, but i know that maybe a few of you that are watching this will be the type of thing you like. Also, you get a tin with these, so it means you can keep them and other brands that do shampoo bars. Lots of tan have created some really amazing ones: luxe tan french brand, from provence, provence. I really like them, and i like what they're doing and i'll link that too, but i hope this has been a little bit insightful. There is something for everyone that repairing the scrubbing and the detoxifying. Really you can start to tweak those shampoos. You don't need to use the same shampoo, every single time that you're using it. If my hair feels dry, especially if i've been on holiday or i've been swimming in a chlorinated pool, then i'll look more for those sort of conditioning properties to kind of smooth it. If i've been maybe washing it too much if i've been over sort of using product, i'll use a volume shampoo to get into it and then kind of like the go-to. For me, the thickening so try. Those out they'll also be more manfromself.com. With reviews from me and if you've tried any products there, then please do leave your reviews. Also the american crew and detoxifying shampoo, the one i'm working with on this. It will be linked down below, but thank you again for watching. I really hope you've enjoyed this. If you have - and you still not press subscribe, then hey come on. Please do press subscribe right now. The button is there. So some more video suggestions down there stay with me and watch them. The products pages man from stuff.com. Are there and i'll give you the series playlist for this whole hairbrush skype, hair products guide series up there until my next new video bye, bye,

Robin James: A new year is on the horizon. What would you like to see on this channel in 2022?

Jaden Anson: I have been using olaplex shampoo and conditioner recently and it works wonders,, I had cancer a few years ago and my hair would not recover from being damaged but since olaplex it’s been much more soft and surprisingly a bit thicker. It’s a little pricey but if anyone is looking to bite the bullet to have healthy hair, it’s a big suggestion from me.

Daniel Lucero: Thanks for these recommendations and for being a great resource in regards to men’s beauty products! I use Olaplex Bond Maintenance Shampoo and Conditioner and it’s done wonders for my hair. It’s softer, more full, more voluminous and overall healthier. I highly recommend Olaplex for all hair types.

johnulcer: Target (retailer in the US) manufactures a "boutique" line of men's products under the label Goodfellow, and their shampoo and conditioner are both pretty clean in terms of ingredients and are also low cost. I began using them recently and have been pleased. I think they stack up against many expensive name brands.

Alan S: I love Bulldog but their Dandruff shampoo doesn't have Zinc in it, which is one of the most studied ingredients that is proven to be effective against dandruff.

Matthew: Love your channel Robin and been following for a long time. Like graphic tees and pomp. days! I’d love to see you get into home decor/interior design. Maybe on Fridays do(make) a new cocktail and live stream Q&A’s…

Mark Walsh: Great video as always. I’m currently trying to find a decent shampoo for grey hair I’m going through a few. To get rid of yellowing. I mean do they actually work ? Any guide would be great Robin.

Jose Beltran: Love the vid. Any suggestions on a daily use? I use one that's a combination of shampoo and conditioner. Are those recommended?

Catherine Halsey: And guys, remember, if you have long hair, like shoulder length+, you may not want to wash your hair every day. I do 2x a week.

augustya: Hi Robin, I wanted to ask you of all the thickening sprays that you have tried and tested do you think Nioxin thickening spray is more with a medicated purpose since it is part of the treatment regime and hence suited more for people with scanty hair and are yet looking to style their hair or give it a slightly thicker and fuller look. Would you recommend Nioxin thickening spray over some others for people in this category ?

Adam Poole: I'm gonna get nioxin, my hair has really been bothering me lately, I've noticed more hair on my comb and brush and I've noticed more scalp, I've been and watched all your previous video on it and im ready to pull the plug and get it. Thanks Robin

Anna Harutyunyan: I hate that shampoos make your hair soft, often too soft and slippery. Do you know any shampoo that does NOT make your hair soft instead leaving it with grip and texture? There once was the KMS Texture shampoo which was absolutely sensational, as it provided exactly what I wanted, i.e. grip and texture. Unfortunately, it was discontinued a few years ago. Too bad. If only they’d bring it back!!! :((

Daniel: I'm currently using a mild perfumeless Sanex shampoo. I honestly think we should use more perfumeless cosmetic products.

Har Sha: Waiting for this. Currently, I am using aveda invati shampoo and conditioner. Because of you I got to know about aveda. Thank you.

Disbarred: What do you suggest for a male with short frizzy hair that is dry sometimes?

Hayden Robinson: My hair has been bleached full scalp once, this was a few months back, then last Friday I just got the roots rebleached to keep the blonde on top because back and sides are grade 4 for dark brown, should I use repair shampoo and conditioner once a week or is that to much, would love to hear what someone thinksn

Adam Shaikh: Hello robin, My hair is kind of peculiar. My hair is somewhat fine dry and really frizzy because I live in a humid environment. I took the quiz on mfh but I’ve tried all of those allready and they haven’t worked yet. Are there any products you can reccomend.

Long Tran: Hey Robin! What would you recommend for hair on the thicker side? thanks!

Dustmadeout: I'm washing my hair every two days, should I use products like thickening Nioxin regularly?

augustya: I really want to try Sacha Juan products but availability of them outside Europe is an issue.

Xenocide: I would love to also know, what type of products are good for terribly frizzy hair and greasy face products.

Tom H: I was just wondering how would you rate shampoo from the company Jack Black or the shampoo and conditioner all in one as well from the same brand Jack Black? If you or anyone else watching knows anything about thus brand it would be really great and helpful/ useful. Thanks.

Vahe Porpossian: Hi Robin I’m using aveda mens performance shampoo and conditioner. Are they good?

Rukitori: Literally the saviour of my hair istg, I've been hooked on Nioxin for like almost a year because of this beautiful man. I would like to know though, typically how much are those Nioxin System 1 pumps? I'm seeing around 90$ USD on amazon, but I wanted to know where you got yours from :D

W Android: HI am a big fan and I have a big question what is the best product to gain back hair if you lose it?

Aleh Huli: Спасибо! Очень интересно!

Vincent Pham: You should try the ruffians shampoo and conditioner

Umida: I got soft hair and really need thickening n volume shampoo...spasiboooo!!! L'occitane shampoos are also

manoloj18: I have a dry hair…which shampoo you recommend?

Adam k: I use the lidl shampoo. All these products are basically SLS, stick to 1-2/ week shampoo and spend the money on good prestyling stuff.

Mark Broom: Thoughts on verb hydrating shampoo?

Daniel Santos: There's no one, no one talking about Scharzkopf 3D MEN Texture Clay. Please make a video about it, specially a brand battle against REDKEN Brews Clay Pomade!

Louis Prescot: What do you think of Lorde Legacy shampoo and conditioner?

IScopesx: Hi Robin please can you do a video on conditioners

Attie Evans: Could anyone suggest to me a shampoo and conditioner for frizzy hair?

JOURNey: Hi robin I straighten my hair 1 year ago my hair are falling till now I have tried everything plz suggest me a shampoo and oil that can repair and regrow my hairsI have curly and wavy hair plz help me ❤️

Yorkshirepud93: Helped me Loads this Channel!

josheminem: Do a hair care video for ppl who do sports daily

Safwaan Qureshi: Review davines range especially the OI range

Karim Walaa: can someone recommend me any hair conditioner and shampoo. My hair became kinda rough and damaged I want it to become tall and smooth.

G Man: Hello mate, any recommendations on dandruff on eyebrows? Thanks

VanFifty: How’s Aveda Men shampoo?

Umida: Btw, cool dark-navy shirt

Irene Odrzywolski: I love lush big shampoo

Consuelo Gutierrez: Saludos desde México
