This is a common confusion for those dealing with radiotherapy or chemotherapy-induced hair loss or hair fall due to any specific disease such as thyroid-induced hair loss: Which is a better option between a Hair Transplant or getting a Hair Patch?
In this educational video, Dr John Watts – a noted dermatologist, trichologist and hair transplant surgeon in Hyderabad – explains the two options that may be available for a hair loss patient.
Introduction:
Serious diseases like cancer may lead to hair loss conditions in several situations as they have to undergo radiotherapy and chemotherapy sessions for several years. Even in thyroid conditions, hair loss is often common.
These patients often have to cover their scalp with a cap, stole or any cloth or covering when they are socialising.
“In such conditions, wearing a wig or a hair patch during this phase is a solution. They can stop wearing them when the hair regrows after the course of the treatment,” explained Dr John Watts.
Hair Patch Vs Hair Transplant:
The hair usually grows back after the patient completes the treatment course but having a hair transplant immediately after hair loss condition due to chemotherapy or radiotherapy is impossible and impractical.
“It is technically impossible as there is no healthy donor hair for transplantation,” said Dr John Watts.
Probably after six months of completing the course of chemotherapy or radiotherapy, the hair starts growing back. However, the existing hair may not be enough and they have to take recourse to either a hair transplant or hair patch.
“You can wear a wig if there is no donor hair. If only some part of the hair is lost after the completion of the treatment course, then wearing a hair patch is also a good alternative, which would help them to lead a normal social life without feeling embarrassed,” informed Dr John.
