Sharon needs to keep her sew ins in for as long as possible because of her work schedule so she wanted to know how long is too long as well as if it's healthy for her hair.

Hair Care Tip #1 No Install Longer Than 2-3 Months!

Wearing a sewin for an extended period of time can serve as a protective hairstyle for your hair but if you leave your weave or extensions in for longer than 2 to 3 months, its possible to have tangled hair or worst, matted hair.

Hair Care Tip #2 Perform a Hair Care Routine Weekly

How often do you perform your hair regimen? Do you shampoo wash your hair weekly or bi-weekly? Do you "co-wash" (conditioner wash your hair) weekly or bi-weekly? Incorporate the same practices when taking care of your sew in weave to prevent dry hair and dandruff problems. In some cases as well, if you constantly have a moist scalp because you work out, sweat often, or swim without thoroughly drying your hair, its possible that your hair will smell like mildew or mold.

Dilute all of your hair care products in applicator bottles for easy product distribution and effective rinsing of those products.

Hair Care Tip #3 Alternate your Braid Pattern to Prevent Thinning Edges or Trained Parting

Alternate the direction of your sew in braid pattern by braiding clockwise instead of counter-clockwise (or vise versa). The braid pattern for your sew in extensions can consist of one perimeter braid that goes around your hairline or two perimeter braids. The rest of your hair can be braided to the back in cornrow braids, zig zag braids, or a beehive braid pattern (or called the butterfly braid pattern).

Hello, everyone. This is Breanna Rutter, author of the book, the natural hair Bible and founder of howtoblackhair.com, and for these special videos. I love to answer all of the questions you all send me via email. So any of you have any questions you will like for me to answer be sure to check out the description box below for additional information to get right on into the video in this video was inspired by an email I received from Sharon Sharon emailed me because She wants to know how long is too long to keep a sewin install. She has a very busy and hectic life right now, so she can get her hair done infrequent as possible. That will be best so Sharon I’m glad you sent you the email, and I know a lot of you watching, always wonder how long should I keep my sewin installed or even for other style like box, braids and Senegalese twist and so on. So this information will also apply to other hairstyle well, but for the specific video I will be focusing on Sharon and her sewin. So the first thing I want to tell you Sharon is that you don't want to keep your sewin installed anymore longer than 2 to 3 months. The reason why is because you are shedding a lot of hair in that time frame. Typically speaking, you are going to be shedding anywhere from 80 to 100 hairs a day now add all those days up. In the span of 2 to 3 months, you have a lot of shed hair. The shed hair also doesn't have anywhere to go because is contained in your braids or twists. So all that hair is staying very close to your roots and that leads to matting. So if you can redo your hair, maybe even a month to two months, that would be great, but I highly suggest that you don't exceed anywhere over three months. Also, three-month is that one time that you really dont want to push anymore longer than that, because, anymore longer than is typically the time that it takes for someone's locks to form. When you are doing locks or your locking your hair, you will notice that as time progresses, all the shed hairs being gathered together and palm rolled together will eventually turn into a very sturdy lock. Your hair will become very tight within that lock and that's why that timeframe of 2 to 3 months is the best when you are wearing a sew in and anything longer than that will lead to a lot of matting. The second thing that I want you to keep in mind is that if you want to be leaving your install in for a long time, you have to be adamant about how you are doing your regimen. What I mean by that is you have to be making sure that you are shampooing your hair and scalp, that your conditioning, your hair, and that your sealing your hair was some type of oil. Also, you want to make sure that you are thoroughly drying your hair as well on my channel here. I have done a lot of videos about how to take care of your hair in installs like sewin and box braids and Senegalese twists. So, even though, specifically talking about Sharon, so when the same information will apply to other hairstyles as well as stated or as I've always stated in different videos for taking care of yur sew in, you want to make sure that you have all of your products involved. With your regimen, so the same products that you use when taking care of your hair without extensions is the same products that you want to use when wearing extensions. So you have your shampoo conditioner, deep conditioning, and you also have a leave and in your oil of choice, make sure that all of your products are at a watery consistency to effectively put it onto your hair and scalp. Cleanse your hair and condition your hair, and so they can give you the ease of rinsing out all of your products so because you are going to be keeping their someone installed for as long as possible. You have to have to keep up with make sure that your hair is healthy or you are going to have a lot of dandruff problems. You may even have some mold issues or mildew issues if you're not getting the moisture out effectively enough and that ultimately leads to breakage and hair damage. So my last tip that I want to give you, when you are caring for your hair with your sewin, is that even though you going to be leaving it in for an extended period of time, every time you get your so and reinstalled redone make sure your Braid pattern is different, so the way that I typically do my braid pattern is that I have one continuous perimeter, braid that goes by my hairline and sometimes I have two braids and go around my hairline and the rest of the braids abraded to the back cornrows. This is a great braid pattern. You can wear for your hair, but because this is the way you going to be wearing your hair for extended period of time, if you happen to get it done immediately after, I suggest that you do the braid pattern differently, so that could mean. Maybe you have one perimeter braid instead of two: maybe you cornrows go back and forth or even braid in the opposite direction. The reason why is because, over time you will be training the parts in your hair, so whichever direction your hair is being braided when you are washing your hair and taking care of your hair after so when you will notice that all of your hair will seem To want to go in one direction, and this is a problem if you have a part in your hair, because it will look like your hair is thinning. Sometimes this can be the case for most times. This is not true if your braids are installed very comfortably and they are not tight. You want to see that your hair has a trained part or part that won't go away, but if you're noticing that when you comb your hair and it looks like your hair - is thin - it's possible that it could be thinning. So that's. Why is very important to change up the direction your braids go, or just completely alter your braid pattern by doing a different braid pattern? The second third fourth time around. So those are my tips that I have to offer you as far as the your sewin, when it's too long to leave in your sewin and some things that you can do to keep your hair healthy and also prevent your from hair thinning. So, even though you just wanted to know how long keep in so, when I give you all the information as a plus as well, so thank you Sharon for sending me that question and I want to thank all of you for watching this video as well before Any of you go make sure to check out the description box to sign up for my email is once you sign up for my email list. Jaylah W: Use coconut oil mixed with conditioner to loosen up the braids when taking down a sew in. It works with 4 month old twists so I assume it would work with a sew in.

Naturally Dunn: She is so awesome. I will take my latches out in 2 weeks and try the tree braids. These are such good protective styles

✨Teary✨: I have a short sew in that was installed literally four days ago & I'm ready to snatch this ish out so badly! Don't get me wrong. It super cute/sexy/fly, but it itches, it's on my face & I'm just not used to it. Gonna keep it in for three more weeks. That's it.

You could write another book of most frequently ask questions about natural hair problems and your solutions.

#UNASHAMED TINA TOLBERT: Thank you so much. I'm getting my first sew in and I want to take care of it properly.

Prophetess Lady Of Wisdom: Me personally. I would only leave my sew ins for a mth. I also moisturize every day, shampoo, condition. Now, I wear wigs. I moisturize my braids every day, co wash once a wk, shampoo, deep condition once a mth. I also do the rice water treatment.Yes, leaving weaves, braids in for extended periods of time causes matting, tangles& balding. Thanks for the tips❤

Kellie Villa: Wonderful! Very well put thank you.

Trillie E: can you use the same extensions after taking them out and washing them or do you have to buy new ones (might start doing this but im new)

Lauren Davidson: Thanks so much! Helped a lot!

Tammy D: Thank u sooo much for ur vids u def give me so much knowledge for my 4c hair

Tangleduntangled: Good video.....Keeping a weave in your hair 1 month or 1 year can have both good and bad consequences if it is removed improperly.  We always tell clients to always put the Take Down remover on their hair to protect and soften their hair-after the weave hair/extensions are cut out.  Most women damage all their lovely new growth at the roots when taking weaves out.

donosp4evr: Very nice and sophisticated video, thank you

Destyni: Is it normal for a lot of breakage to come out when I take it down?

KurlyKai: My hair won't stay in braids. Every time I get some, they slide out my hair within 3 days of having them done. Any tips on having them stay in my hair?

N: when you say 3 months as a max do you mean 3 months and then taking it off and letting it natural or you mean 3 months to re-do it?

khi monet: Hi should you wear a net under your weave and how do you keep your edges safe with a closure
