Welcome to life of hey, my name is James Atkinson and in this episode I'm bringing you an old-school technique, so old-school, but well not many people would probably use it anymore, but I think it's one of those techniques, it's great to know how to do the principle Of this technique is a precision classic and it is a really good technique to practice, especially if you're a young stylist, because it's one of those haircuts where it will catch. You off-guard. If the lady turns up and says I'd like my hair, to look like this. The traditional Firefly, some people call it a wedge or are there sorts of hybrids of each other? The Prix section for this technique is incredibly simple. It is a simple horseshoe that sits on the top of the parietal Ridge and travels round the head, with complete symmetry. The first section is a vertical line and then we're going to simply take a horizontal section, we're pulling it slightly out from the head just using our fingers as a guide, one fingers width from the head with good tension. We then pull all the subsequent sections down on to the first section. This is the foundation of this haircut good tension and keeping the hair slightly elevated on each section. We then follow the outline of the hair. We pull the hair straight out from the head on the first section and then we pull every subsequent section down onto the first one: keep hair with good tension and slight elevation. We work through this technique in this fashion all the way round. I can't stress you how important keeping the hair under good tension is in this technique. You don't have to strangle the hair and pull it to death, but you do need to be taught in your fingers and keeping the hair evenly damp, as your work is also very, very important. Remember the elasticity changes when the hair starts to dry out and there we have it. The first side is complete again vertical section to the back of the here: horizontal section: pull the hair down, keeping one fingers width away from the ear cutting a square line with good tension check. Both sides are the same. If you're happy then carry on next section. Pull it straight down onto the first line, you can see the slight elevation now and just one fingers width away from the head with slight elevation on the first section, the next section has got a little bit more elevation. This is the final section in this front side and then you simply repeat the process that you did on the opposite side elevate, the hair straight out from the head. That'S a 45 degree angle that travels in towards the nape and then every subsequent section is pulled down onto that. First abstention. Remember: good tension is key and keeping the head damn. It is also incredibly important. We work all the way across to the opposite side of the head to make sure that both of the back parts are blended perfectly. This is very, very important. You'Ll see my sections run all the way through the center of the head, making sure that I run into my opposite side so that I know I've got absolutely blended center back graduation in the back in the center. There will be a slight point, simply take a horizontal section, elevate it out and just gently cut the corner of this room blend Eagle back in seamlessly. There we have the underneath complete. The top is very straightforward. Put the hair into the parting. The hair is going through warm and create a horizontal section at the back just by the crown, and this haircut repeats itself again and again it seems complicated in the beginning, but you'll understand once you get going. This is a easy-peasy haircut because it is the same technique over and over and over again. We are simply pulling the hair down to the initial line that we created with slight elevation, keeping the hair with good tension. You are cutting a square line all the way around simply blow-dry the hair with a vent brush or a Denman or any brush of that kind, and brush the hair horizontally backwards and forwards until the hair is dry. This shape sits perfectly with no blow-drying effort at all refine the rest of your haircut with a gentle point cutting technique. Remember this is a heavy shape and doesn't need a lot of texturizing personalization little bits and pieces by elevating the front hairline there. Just so it'sit's a bit softer may be required dependant on the hair type of your client and gently scissor over comb. Your graduation might be required also in this instance, I'm going to elevate the fringe up so that I get a more seamless blend between the fringe and the rest of my haircut and there we have it and classic the Diana, the Firefly, the wedge, whatever you want To call it they're all cut in the same fashion, styles slightly differently or cut at slightly different vendors. I hope you've enjoyed this it's one of my absolute favorites and a haircut that is out of fashion at the moment, but is well worth knowing how to do. It'S a bit of an old-school classic one that some of you will use a lot and others will have never done, but one that I love to know how to cut. It is one of those haircuts that has been around for 60 70 years. You enjoyed this episode and you know what to do subscribe to the channel. Give me a thumbs up and leave me in the comments down below
Comments
Vera Theron de Hen: I predict this cut is going to make a huge comeback soon. Thank you so much for sharing !
Delia Cazacu Dd: Thank you so much! I've been searching for a tutorial for this for such a long time! I don't think it's out of fashion, it's so simple and elegant that is timeless. Thanks again!
Kate Redsull: I’ve been wanting to know how to do this for so long! And you have answered so many questions that I wanted to know! Thank you! Please keep making more tutorials x
yoyomi: I learned this cut in Beauty School and loved doing it but you've made it much simpler. I remember over-directing the hair in the wedge part so the hair would naturally flow to the back. Enjoyed this.
Melisa Nagy: I subscribed within 30 seconds perfectly explained and straight to the point, thank you very much for sharing
Robin: Thank you very much. This example of the wedge/firefly was much needed. You’re a great teacher.
Zero98: Thank you so much ! I'm really looking forward to see more short classic haircut styles videos especially back to 80s and 90s , because it's rare to find any tutorial , thanks again :)
beauty: I ADORE old school hairstyles!!! I wanna try this out but I’m SUPER scared my hairdresser will mess up
jas4everchanged: Love this haircut James. I wanted to thank you for all you do to help the new guys who are just learning. Thank you very much!! May God Bless you sir!! Jeff S.
Josee Gendron: Thank you James I love these classics as they teach us things we may or may not already know but with more understanding
Janis Calaba: My very favorite haircut! I wore it for years and I still give many wedge cuts!
Wonder Woman: I agree with Melisa... I subscribed within seconds! I had this haircut at one point in my life. I was taught this at the Sassoon school in Santa Monica! Beautifully executed and explained! Thank you for sharing! ❤️
Mary Beth Arnold: Thank you for another awesome video! SO easy to understand!
Katie Martinez: Had a client pull this haircut out from her long ago photo album and I honestly had no idea ...thanks to this video I will be much more confident next time! Thank you!
Tammy Werner: James I think this is more All time favourite haircut to both cut and watch being cut. As always your explanations are so simple and easy to understand Please don’t change!!! Bravo you
Susan Tomes: You are a superb teacher and a really accomplished hair stylist. A pleasure to watch.
shockalockabocka: Thanks so much for this vid! Like you said it’s a foundational shape, and I’ve found all I need to do to modernize it is do some different things to the top like disconnect the fringe, layer it, etc. Will you do a video of round graduation (like a bowl) with some modern tweaks like you did in the pixie video?
Estera Nine: What’s your secret on having both sides of head even? Mainly the length? I always struggle with keeping the same, and on short hairstyles, left side of the head (layers) always end up being shorter (I’m right handed and always start on left size, then move on to right)
Lynda Wolf: I was actually looking for a haircut tonight. Thank you! I think I've found it!
Pam Foster: Great to see training on a beautiful wedge cut. I loved this my slightly longer wedge cut back in the 70s
TurkFebruary: Clear and concise. Thank you.
Mary Mary: One of the first style I learned. Some of my clients still ask for it.
Andrea Allison: Ironically this haircut is making a comeback due in part I believe to The Crown miniseries. I've been looking for a shorter cut that isnt too short and was thinking about the Diana cut. Thanks for your tutorial.
S J: I’ve been watching some documentaries of her and it looks like it was the base shape you made, but even more layered over the top, right? It even looks like when they were layering they didn’t over direct the area in front of the ears back to keep it a bit longer. It all looks connected and feathery. I’ve been using this as a basis for all my round grad haircuts, varying elevation, and it makes so much sense to me, and i wiz thru haircuts much quicker now! Thank you so much!
Lili Potgieter: I've had a request for this last week by an older customer. Thank you so much.
Patricia Elliott: Thank you so much I had this cut through the '80s and 90's. I've been trying to get this cut at salons for 0ver 10years butt no one can do it. I have sent this link to a hairdresser and hopefully, I can get my classic gorgeous cut again.
DECL: I learned this in beauty school in 1976 Dorothy Hamill and the Farrah Fawcett were the big styles for short and long
Aster Edu.: Absolutely on point. The Lady Diana style . Kudos
Nan Vonmueller: Beautiful! I remember when. Well done!
hairbyadam: Can you do a cutting video for the client who says 'I like it really layered' for medium/long hair?
hasmik mananian: My favourite educator I love it when I watch new videos by you thank you turned out great
Adrienne Boullianne: nice review! so many variations of this can be executed!
KhunnineJamieMelbourne Thai: James . Beautiful haircut. I have seen this haircut before .Thanks
Sue Pumphrey: I love this so much!
Tracey Thomas: Would love to revisit some of the classics
Josee Gendron: Oh and yes I get asked for this type haircut often especially older ladies with less hair thickness
Tracey Thomas: Love seeing the classics
Joel G: Thank you, very cool though, very precise
Shi Smi: Requested this cut at the Beverly Hills Sassoon salon. Not only didn't get this cut but the clueless creative director cut my hair so awful that I have to let it grow out till at least Nov. 2021.
Mandi Toon: Can I ask you a question please James how did you find your confidence please something which I struggle with sometimes thank you love your videos fantastic content x
Odalys Ruiz: Beautiful
Marylou White: always see this haircut, in powerful places , parlimentary women , seem to love this look. Merci
Ada Darvina: I'd like to have the same haircut but I have a small and narrow forehead so fringes don't suit me... and worse I can't stand hair falling on my face... so the same cowlick and ponytail for ages(
jyo vlogs: I want that hair cut....
Austen Thomson: It turned out good bro!
CoCo LoCo: Brilliant!
Heather G: Old school basics for so many options. Thanks for sharing that! Couldn't listen to the vid...music was too loud and disjointed....my brain cuts out...lol.
Amy louise Bruton l: Favourite cut ever
K Conrad: This is NOT the classic Princess Diana haircut lol. Maybe in her later years, but THE Diana haircut was what she had when she married Prince Charles, and that was more like a longer firefly that was feather. This is basically just a longer pixie.
School Ict project: Hi can you plz make video on that iconic lady di engagement haircut plz
Jodie Einsle: awesome
Shivaji Pawar: Osm and this is riyal haircuts nice work
Musarat Sarfaraz:
I Believe: OMG that's the 90s lesbian p.e. teacher hair cut! You got it perfect and are a master hair stylist but part of me wants this video to not exist as it might go viral. This haircut was everywhere and please don't make a come back.
Kathy T: Thanks for your time
I should be sleeping: music sounds like a drunk grasshopper. UK hairdresser showing a haircut of a Royal with THAT music

B L: Such an ugly boring haircut...but so important to know.
