ABOUT VOGUE

Vogue is the authority on fashion news, culture trends, beauty coverage, videos, celebrity style, and fashion week updates.

You know what this look is: what lady could die: lady gaga, without a horse, what the hell on an imaginary horse? Yes and she's, riding and she's riding hi vogue, i'm natasha leon and i'm ted gibson and today we're going to be doing something that we think of as a a kind of if stevie, nicks and bernadette peters took a bunch of lsd, had a baby and then Went down the rabbit hole into wherever alice in wonderland lives? Is that can i say, can i do that honey you're, a boy to do? Okay? What i love about natasha's, hair in particular, is that she has many different textures and what i love to do is. I love to add texture. I love to give volume so, as i um take one side down, as you can see on on the other side, natasha's hair is a little bit shorter. So what i'm going to do for you today is i'm going to teach you my technique in doing hair extensions, because it is not hollywood's desk up secret any longer. What i wanted to do is i wanted to come through and soften up. Natasha'S hair her own curl pattern and kind of blend it a little bit with the actual hair extension marcel, who does the hair on russian doll was like? Why don't we tip it further into red? Also because we knew rebecca henderson was going to be sort of like the platinum blonde and then greta lee had sort of brown hair and in order to be functioning charlie's angels, we needed one of each. I had like a a thing where you know like just sort of male rock stars in the 70s or something always used to have that kind of shag sunglasses. And then you don't even notice what the person looks like and that's what i like. I like. Being half a half a muppet, and so some somehow the the the red hair really just gelled it all together. I believe that a woman is more loyal to her hair colors than she is to her hair cutter. Interesting really, i think, because there's something about getting the right shade for a woman that i think is really important and when you tap into that it changes everything with ted and i the first time we met. I was actually with uh molly r stern was doing my makeup and molly, and i have been sort of like like best friends sisters. I think we were doing james corden and i never met ted before. But when i walked into the room, it was like molly and ted, and the three of us just spent the next hour and a half like laughing hysterically for no particular reason playing all these songs singing along with the songs, the vibe between ted and molly. And i was so special it just sort of nothing mattered in that moment, because it was kind of the air in the room was just good uh and then, after that day i was like. I just tried to have ted come with me everywhere, all the time, and luckily you would would say yes, even though you're one of the busiest men in showbiz. Well, i guess it is hollywood. It is hot if you decide that you're going to go, buy some hair extensions. They can be slightly off if you want them to be, they don't have to match exactly because if you know that if you have hair color or if you color your hair, you know that as it's on your head and it grows out and grows out and Grows out, it gets a little bit lighter on the ends, so it's very important to know that you don't have to have it specifically exactly the same color. You can tweak it just a little bit for yourself, i'm adding texture, i'm adding movement, i'm giving it just a little bit of softness, because what i want to do is i'm going to put in the next hair extension that i'm going to show you in just A second, so with hair extensions, you can buy them with clips. These are clip-ons. You can see now when you purchase them, you can get in a seven seven in a pack. What'S important to know is that there are rows that have three clips on them. There are rows that have two and some that have one what i did in the back natasha's. I use the ones that are three to put in the back, because the head is a little larger in the back and then on the sides. I'M going to use the twos i'm going to take a section diagonally from the front hairline, basically right above the eyebrow, all the way back to the back of the head and clip that up normally on someone that has finer hair. I would come back and use my tail comb and back comb this area so that, when i put in the hair extension into that, so it would hold. I don't necessarily have to do that because natasha has enough texture so as i apply it clip it in place, you know what this is reminding me of. When i was like, i don't know, maybe 12 i was in new york and i was maybe at gristedes or agostinos or something one of our major supermarkets. And i remember that there was a checkout lady who had like soft curly hair down to her ankles down to her ankles. Yes, and i thought to myself at the time: that's what i'm gon na do with my hair. You know my mom. I remember used to do uh like brushing out my knots, and i remember a lot as i cried: did it hurt yeah, yeah and then also in high school. That would make so much fun of me that i was like. I never brushed my hair or something because it was curly and i was like no. I brush it in the in the shower with the conditioner on and what part of new york did. You grew up in well, i was mostly, i was like there's a upper east side, okay and um, so in the city yeah. But i think that because i was a a scholarship kid with a single mom, they thought i was an easy target. It was kind of like the source of pride when i was a little girl, but when i got to this weird appetite high school, it was suddenly uh like a symbol of being different, yes, and that it was a real. You know like that means, there's something wrong with you. Otherwise your hair would grow out straight. I always find that when i'm directing and like, if i show up to a production meeting and there's men there, and i have straight hair - that they tend to sort of accept me as an authority much easier and then with the big curly hair. It'S kind of like oh, she has such wacky ideas. So what i'm doing now is i'm taking section by section and i'm using my curling tong and softening over natasha's, the top of her hair and then coming back and using the iron and rotating all the way around, for only like two seconds, which gives me a Softer curl pattern: do you see that and then that's what blends in with the hair extension and as i'm working and i'm still concentrating on making sure that i keep that frizziness, i don't want it to be too curly. The sexiness of it is the frizz, and the sexiness of it is how it feels and moves the sexiness of it is very important to ted, and i uh. We spent a lot of time focusing on that, because it's true that mostly that's what we want to be projecting uh. So we come at that as a duo. It feels like, finally, as a society, we're starting to understand that this is like this wide spectrum of what historically, we've decided, you know had said, was really narrow with regards to beauty and that, no matter what you looked like, you were supposed to try to fit Yourself into this tiny little box - and it was like heartbreaking for so many people, because it does make you feel a certain type of way, if you're, seeing images constantly that are just this homogenized single single thing, and you know that you're other but you're like struggling To say, oh, my my difference is kind of what makes me special, as opposed to sort of collectively, actually seeing that reflected in our images. It puts my soul at so much ease when i think about little girls, the idea that maybe they'll be able to spare themselves like just an inch of suffering around that that's so. Needless and also just such a more boring and lamer. The fourth step i'm going to talk to you about is product. I think, if you have naturally curly hair, one of the things that natasha always says is that she uses a leave-in conditioner. She runs a wide tooth comb in the shower. I think that you want to make sure that every strand of hair is saturated with product. Now, when i diffuse natasha's hair, when i'm getting her ready, i use several different products in order to create that really nice beautiful curl pattern that she's used to having one of the products is. I use a spray-on detangler and then i use another product called shooting star texture meringue that actually gives a little bit of control and a little bit of shine, which i think is really important. Curly hair absorbs light, so women, usually that have curly hair, are looking for something that's going to be shine enhancing because of that absorption of light. If you have straight hair, it reflects light. So, as a reflex light, you always have light and shine curly hair girls. It'S always important to have a cool water rinse, it's a secret, a cool water rinse before you get out of the shower chad. I kind of wish you'd told me this a little bit sooner uh. I also am learning a lot of secrets today. I feel like i should have been privy to them, but it's fine life is a process. It'S a process. This is a process. Ah, look at this diana ross would be proud what? Yes, i'm ready to go on stage. I have a big concert tonight. Ain'T! No mountain high enough ain't, no mountain of hair high enough. Do we just need a little bit more more? Oh, yes, but just about there do you think they'll think it's too short. Yes, i want them to almost think where's, her body hiding you

Kelsey Ainslie: Her classmates asking “why didn’t you brush your hair?” is sooo true. The way that people view curly girls as unkempt is so backwards. when in reality curly folks put twice as much effort into their hair ‍

Heliotrope Sunset: I adore his aesthetic. The eyelashes, the mustache and the pearl necklace make him look so refined and elegant.

Bene Gesserit: Natasha Lyonne has one of the best raspy smoker voice in the industry right now

David Jensen: This was so fun. She’s such an underrated actress and their dynamic is just so enjoyable.

wig: fun fact: natasha lyonne is the coolest person alive

Arsh Behal: This felt like such an elegant, retro, regal moment in time. Both Ted and Natasha are so timeless and beautiful here and also, incredibly nice people. It's surreal, how this feels like the kind of laughter, giddiness and warmth people would think about after they are gone (God forbids) of when they reminisce about lives well lived. Plus, there is an alarming amount of beauty in this video. Loved it!

Nithya Ramesh: I’m falling for this woman. I’ve noticed in most all her interviews the one consistent thing that she talks about is her relationships and bonds she’s forged w ppl and THAT is someone who VALUES something real and I love it

ASMRA: Yup....As an Arab American woman when I was in grade school people would call my hair pubes...in HS a guy told me I'd be a "knock out" if I had a nose job....funny thing is at 40 now, I feel more beautiful than I ever have and it has nothing to do with how anyone feels but me. I'm glad that the world is embracing all types of beauty. I just pray that people realize that it's not the world that needs to accept you...it's you. God Bless!

KiraRichie: Why don’t we see more of her? She’s such a vibe. I love Russian Doll season 1 & 2

iceetas: i totally agree with people seeing you as "wacky" when you wear your hair naturally and agreed so much i said "yeah" out loud to myself as if i was on a call with her lol

Alyss15Nightingale: Hearing Natasha talk about growing up with curly hair was so something I needed to hear as well! It was such a struggle as a kid and my mom didn't know what to do with my texture so it's been quite a journey! Thank you Natasha for talking on it!

CynAnne1: I adore redheads (always have, always will), and Natasha's hair has that 'Art Nouveau' shade that's just gorgeousness...

DOPER JONES: 1. Ted is literally gorg, lashes for days And 2. It is soo true, as someone who has not just curly hair but extremely voluminous hair whenever i wear it natural people treat me soo different. People always assume im some hippy dippy flower child and as a biracial person i have always hated that stereotype because it's soo not my style at all. It's takes a lot of not just confidence but energy to really rock your hair like that all the time but she looks great.

kan 07: Gosh they are such a vibe... Her wearing her natural curls gave me the confidence to find my frizzy naturally curly hair just acceptable and lovable

Sadhana Singh: Love NL in Russian Doll. She is such a unique beauty and talent. I enjoyed seeing her personality and sense of humor in this.

Ciara Hershey: I so loved the duo. Two great people. As someone with super straight hair, Natasha's hair is a mystery in the best possible sense. I'm obsessed with her look and wish I had it too, though I know the grass is always greener on the other side.

Beth Mills: I have loved this woman since Slums of Beverly Hills. She just exudes cool. Like your coolest best friend ever. Always has a cigarette to lend.

JRoses: Love that she has a literal mane that fits her last name

Promise Jubilee: I'm absolutely crazy for a massive curly mane, and Natasha's is MAGNIFICENT! I LOOOOOVE IT!

jje: So interesting what she said about not being taken as seriously with curly hair. It is gorgeous too.

Aida: She makes me feel proud of having curly hair ♡

RouRou: Just finished watching Russian doll series. This woman is my soul.

Chris Carter: She has been through it and emerged happy and successful on the other side. Good for her!

Megan Hanrath: Aw, Ted!! I remember his TLC, What Not to Wear days and have always loved his warm personality ❤ I love this pairing of beautiful souls! xo

Lucy-Jane Walsh: Russian doll came out just as I cut my curly red hair exactly as the character has her hair. It was uncanny how much it looked like mine. Everyone was telling me about the show

Teacup: I love the messy hair look, it’s boring to have perfect looking hair

Yashuop: Your consistency and quality of content never disappoints!

BF: Oh I feel her, I have very frizzie thick curly hair, a lot like hers. I was bullied in elementary and middle school because of it. Mushroom head was their favorite, then in highschool watching them all get perms in the 90s was hilarious. I love my hair, it’s a lot like hers. Only now at 40 do I appreciate it. Now theirs is thin, scraggly and falling out, all getting hair extensions just to look like they have hair and here I am with my still thick curly hair living my best hair life while they spend 1000’s to try to resemble it.

Emma s: She's beautiful. Love her hair, the fringe!... love it!

The Slithery Sylvie: I have always been obsessed with her hair! Ever since Slums of Beverly Hills.

Berenice Dorantes: Such a great conversation about hair and identity. Loved to see the dynamic between Natasha and Ted.

Emily Lian: She’s absolutely insane and I love how different magazines just let her talk. This one is 10 and her ASMR video was 30

Valkyrae ViXX: Totally loved this ! And really like to see other Women with the same hair as me - There are lots of us that didn't get to be Disney princesses until Brave came out!! ❤

Amanda Orlando: I really relate to her comments about having curly hair as a kid vs in high school, and then as an adult being taken more seriously when your hair is straight. I loved this video so much!!

Maltin On Movies: I have always loved Natasha—and seeing her finally feel good, be healthy and happy is an absolute joy

J.Fro90: I love this conversation because both having naturally curly hair myself & growing up in a predominantly black community, it was so ingrained that "curly hair is meant to be either straightened or tamed by some heat", and back in the 90s & early 2000s it would be weird to me to want to wear your hair in its natural state instead of manipulated by heat. But now that we know so much about textures & heat damage & chemical damage & most importantly (to me) we've gotten rid of the stigmas that you only wear fake hair (protective styles) to hide something or to perpetuate something, when in truth it is & has long been a way to protect your hair & scalp depending on the hair, scalp or method. We really are in the era of "do what works for you", and I love that & love promoting that.

D. W.: Natasha Lyonne is just plain fab, someone I would to be friends with. And Ted Gibson is a truly magical creator. LOVE!

Janet Gorman: I loved this! She is amazing and they have a wonderful dynamic with each other, you can clearly see how much they enjoy spending the time together......and the end "hair" result is incredible

Claire Huggill: Love her & Russian Doll Season 2 she’s needs alll the awards

Kel Zahn: I love this. My mother also didn't know what to do with my hair and would always brush it out. It would take FOREVER and it hurt. In high school, I would just straighten my hair too, got made fun of for having crazy hair. I definitely embrace it now though. Natasha is the best <3 and I'm gonna use some of those tips Ted just gave us for sure.

Jeannine Terese: What an intelligent woman! She’s spot on about beauty standards.

Stephanie Homeier: i freaking love this girl! hilarious, gorgeous and cool. this hair is STUNNING!

sarahfettingful: LOLOL 'we just need a bit more' - that part killed me. Love this look and this duo together. Perfection!

Bree Free: I have loved watching her since I saw “Slums of Beverly Hills” as a child. her beauty is classic❤️

Dana C: I LOVE her hair and her too. This look is everything.

CynLagos: All her hair experiences for being a curly hair girl I grew up with too! In Spanish they would call me "bruja" or witch. It hurt then but now I aim to look as witchy as ever possible !

Vada Morrison: She’s the first celebrity I’ve ever seen with my exact hair type. It makes me feel really good about my hair

sassy frass: Love Natasha! I've been following her since we were kids. She is awesome and so real!

Natavan Quliyeva: I fell in love with her after Russian Doll. Kind of she has similar character with Nadia in a real life. P.S. in the movie she is Aries and in the real life Aries as well.

Karma: I love these two. I have the same hair type and I love hearing the tricks for us wild and whimsy hair types.

Tula: Loved her since Slums of Beverly Hills and but I’m a cheerleader. When I saw her on Orange is the new black I almost passed out that she was back.

Shaina Michalski: I’ve always loved this woman. She’s so beautiful.

Danielle W.: I love my frizzy, wavy, natural hair, and this makes me so proud to embrace it <3

Life in Lithuania: As someone with thick, frizzy, red hair - I feel so represented by Natasha :')

Hush Puppy: The first time I as her was on American Pie. She was absolutely amazing then and now. And love her voice!

Jenny Sieck: I have had dreams about her. She has inspired me and taught me so much in my dreams.

Evonne: This was a conplete an utter delight to watch, thank you!

Jennifer Peters: Excellent tips, thanks Ted! And I've loved Natasha since the 90s so it's always great to see her in my feed!

Raven Martínez: She’s a legend I grew up watching her!!!

Steven Clemons: Natasha is so freaking smart and gorgeous to boot!! I'm always pleased to see her! She's a welcomed gust of smog in a dreary sterile world.

MOLLY L: Oooooh, he's so gentle with her hair that it's giving me ASMR feelings. I love it!

Lynn T. Roman: I have naturally straight hair, but at the beginning of the year I had it permed. I love it! I’ve always loves curly hair. I don’t understand why people hate on curly hair, it’s so beautiful!

Amy Galvin: Love Ted! I also was teased for having curly red hair and not California silky blonde. Beautiful job. Looks very Pre-Raphalite !

Nessa Vee: Their dynamic and friendship is so beautiful i loveee itttt

Who’s That Chick: I loved this a little too much, the dynamic is perfect.

Mister006: She's a beauty in every way of my imagination. Love the stuffin' outta her! I just can't get enough!

Kathryn Wittmeier: Ted has the most calming and soothing voice. He should be reading bedtime stories on Audible!

Abigail Harris: Bernadette Peters is such a gorgeous woman and Stevie Nicks is an iconic singer! What an amazing video Vogue

Moxie55: "The sexiness of it is the frizz"...I love that.

Blackened Featherz: This is my favorite cut and style shes ever had oh my god

Heather Hustles: Not going to lie, I truly loved this so much!

Renee Lazzareschi: Love it! It’s giving me pre-Raphaelite diva vibes! Gorgeous! Dante Gabriel Rossetti eat your heart out!

Nix: “If Stevie Nicks and Bernadette Peters took a bunch of LSD, had a baby and then went down the rabbit hole into wherever Alice in Wonderland lives” god I love her.

Robin Girlwonder: The hair... Gorgeous...... but their vibe was EVERYTHING!

Be: She has the face to carry it! It looks amazing

im nanami's bread, toji's worm nd sukuna's finger: i love her voice

Wild Opal: I love her color and I want this haircut❤️‍

Kate Donnelly: i’m so in love with this whole video, but especially natasha’s sliders

missVmilne: Oh joy !! Love Russian Doll and everything that gal does : - )

Great gowns, beautiful gowns.: Natasha Lyonne used to have the most beautiful, thick curly hair back in her 'Slums of Beverly Hills' days. I wonder what made her straighten it because it hasn't been curly for so many years now. The actress Kerry Russell had beautiful, thick very very curly hair too, and she did the same thing as far as straightening it years ago and never being seen with curly hair again.

pigeon: Love this woman! She's so cool

Kate Durbin: This hair stylist is a true artist.

CelsiusBlack: As someone with the same hair, I’m so excited to watch this. Lol

Julie J: Natasha is so funny! Of course Tedd is working, but you can tell he’s having just as much fun. I think anyone would love to open a couple of bottles of wine and spend an hour with these two!

JussyRaven2: OMG...I have always LOVED Natasha's hair. I too, have very curly hair like she does and for my entire life I'd hated it. Growing up as a teenager in the 80's, having naturally very curly hair wasn't "in" or accepted. I did so much damage to my curl patter with chemical straighteners and heat products. For so long I got frustrated and just kept it cut very short to hide the curls. Now, in my 50's, I find its lost some of its natural curl, plus typical thinning, that I cry because I can't have my formerly thick curls as they're now much more accepted. I just love her hair! It's thick, curly and GORGEOUS! (I just wish I had learned to love my curls so much younger) Makes me so happy to see curls being embraced - Finally!

Jude22: Hilarious duo! Enjoyed this clip so much.

Bahiya13: I'm such a huge fan of this woman!!!

Rai S: The way she spoke in the intro was pure Nadia She has this cool auntie, best friend, rebellious chick thing going on which I find sooo attractive. Ugh. ❤️

Kirty Wright: Absolutely loved Natasha in Russian Doll❤️x She is one stunning beauty❤️x

c m: Man I love her. Such an underused actress. And he was fabulous!

Maria Franquez: Love the look!!

Chrissy SanRio: LoVed HeR that Amazing Hair and Raspy Voice since... " But I'm A Cheerleader " It makes me so Happy US Curly Girls are being recognized and they're so many products for our beautiful hair textures. That being said some people still are weird about BIG CURLY HAIR, in the workplace especially and that needs to change.

Ebru Selçuk: I have curly hair, my mother's hair is straight. When I was little, my mother used to comb my hair every day and said that my hair would be shiny and beautiful like that, while I hated my hair for years. it was so frizzy and awful. I used to braid my hair all the time. I was 19 when I realized how beautiful my hair was and I only combed it when I go to shower, other than that I never touched my hair. I think straight-haired mothers whose daughters have curly hair should be educated :)

Persefani Blix: Shiny Natasha..lights up every room with her spirit and snark. She's a real crass act and classy, as well

Melissa Brooks: I love the colour and her hair is beautiful

Medha: Love the new season of Russian Doll so much!
