How to do box braids using the rubberband method - Perfect protective style for natural hair in any season. The rubber band method for box braids and the tips & tricks I share, are beneficial to healthy, natural hair because they are SNAG-FREE and LOW-TENSION! These jumbo box braids will NOT pull your hair out. With fine natural hair, I need braids that are not too tight and are actually a protective style. [ Jodi ], Hey guys it's Jodi and welcome back to another video. ( upbeat music ) For our easy box. Braids we're gon na need some hair, I'm using Kanekalon hair Expression. Hair does well also, but this is a cheap-o hair that I got from my local beauty. Supply.. It comes three in a pack. Any of those will work and I'll discuss it a little bit later.. You also need some edge control, and this is the secret to having your natural hair blend with your extensions.. I use the Creme of Nature brand. We're also using some humidity-proof heat protectant oil, as well as a comb, a rat-tail comb and a fine-tooth comb, and then the most important step, probably is the rubber bands. We're actually not using rubber bands. But we need elastic bands for this tutorial really important.. I'Ve noticed a huge difference when I use the elastic versus the rubber, because the elastic does not tug at my hair and it doesn't pull my hair out.. So I went ahead and did the hardest part. For me, anyway, which is the back of my hair and you're thinking? Okay, this is a DIY tutorial Jodi. How do I do the back of my hair and that's coming up? Don'T you guys worry, but first, I'm gon na show you guys in the front the basics of how to do my version of the neatest easiest lowest tension box braids possible. So I'm doing I'm gon na call these one and a half inch sections and I didn't measure it. So I have no idea how accurate that is., I'm parting for the most part, I'm parting, some squares, I'm also doing this on clean and moisturized hair, and I also make sure to apply some oil to my scalp, because I do have dry scalp and right now. I'M gon na show you how I use the black edge control.. I use it for the front of my hair, where I need those hairs to be filled in especially like the fine red hairs on the front or my edges.. Then I secure each section with an elastic band.. I find that using the quote. Unquote, rubber band method is super easy and it also eases the tension on your hair, so you're not grabbing at your hair, to put it into the braid.. The elastic band basically gives you some relief at the attachment point and for my natural girls, this is another great tip that edge control keeps your hair straight and it keeps it from getting puffy while in the braid.. So that's why I'm applying edge control. Also to my blow-dried hair., Now I'm going to grab my Kanekalon braiding hair., I separate each pack into two pieces., I'm using very big portions here.. The size of each pack that you buy is gon na differ from mine probably.. We just wan na make sure that the size of the braid you're going for has enough hair to achieve the same look.. So this next step is to ensure that once we get to the end of our braid, it's not gon na unravel.. I like it tapered. So it stays put and the braid can be nice and strong, so I don't have to secure it with like a rubber band or burn it, which is really bad. I don't like burning hair anymore, but I like to separate the ends to make it a little bit uneven before I start my braid. Now as far as braiding, you can braid any way you like., I'm gon na, show you how I braid under and then I'm Gon na show you how I braid most comfortably, which is over, but what kind of braider are you I wan na see how you guys braid so I'll. Keep that in mind for my future tutorials so answer the poll and let me know., But me personally, I braid over and the trick here or not a trick. Just the easiest way to do. It is to use that piece of your own hair as one strand of the three pieces to the braid. When braiding you always wan na make sure that the outside pieces are going under the middle piece and you're just doing swapping motions. Son once the outside piece Goes under the middle piece, you grab the now other outside piece, bring it under.. I just do that'til. I get to the point where I have to make three equal strands just to braid a little better and make the three pieces equal in size, and then I braid it all the way down to the end. ( electronic music ). So after you finished your first braid, you just simply repeat the process. Again., You get your nice-sized piece of hair, you teas the ends a little bit so they're uneven and your braid is not going to unravel.. You part the neatest pieces you can of equal size.. You oil, your scalp, especially if it tends to get dry.. You apply your moisturizing products in this case, I'm using edge control to keep my hair in place.. You then apply the elastic band and just a clarification on what these are.. I just know. These are like the shiny, ones., They're, still elastic bands. I think they're made of rubber, but the main difference is that they're, the shiny ones they come in clear and they come in black and those are the ones that are they have more slip than the rubber.. The rubber sticks to your hair., It has more friction and it can break your hair off literally. So I make sure I use the shiny ones., That's just a rule of thumb when you go in the store and get'em and then we braid all the way to the end, starting with using the section of your hair as one of the three pieces for your Braid. And of course, as you work, your way down, you're gon na get a thin piece, just equally divide them as you go, so you have a nice equally sized braid., (, electronic music ), So guys. This is a process of me doing the back of my hair myself.. I make sure I grab two mirrors one in the front of me and one in the back of me, so that the one in the back can reflect off the one in the front, and I can see what I'm doing.. It'S always not easy. It'S actually never easy.. When I get it done, I try to do as good of a job as I can, with what I can. See. You'll see me squinting, trying to part the back of my hair but yeah. The back of my hair is always the hardest to do, and it's always a little bit less neat than the rest, but whatever we have the front of our hair to cover the back, so neatness doesn't really count, especially in the back you guys.. So now I'm just showing more of the process of how I do the back of my hair and when I get to the front again, I'm gon na come back and show you guys more tips and tricks. I do them. You can see that I have three left in the front.. Sometimes I just do them all at one time, like those three in the front, I just put them all in my rubber bands and just make my way through each braid.. This might be quicker if you like doing things in batches like if you had put all your hair in the rubber bands. First get all your braiding hair together and then start braiding from there.. This is also where I'm gon na show you how long it takes me realistically to work through my braids, including like when I start when I stop so I'm not gon na cut out too much of this part.. So watch me as I get these braids done, including my music braid. (, rap music, ), The start and stop points when I get up and get more hair. If you want your braids to hang or swing or flow girl, you can dip them in hot water.. First, you put the water on to boil dip your hair very carefully. And yes, that's why I look so stiff.. You got ta be very careful with hot water, and I do this in the kitchen'cause safety, hazard., (, laughs, ). So once you do that you just trim your ends and you're good to go. ( rap music ). So these are my results from doing my low-tension box braids.. These were like the easiest I've ever done, because my scalp is not on fire from those rubber bands being too tight. And it looks super cute.. I used a regular jumbo braid this time., I think I ran out of hair, so I maybe used one or two pieces of expression hair in the front, but yeah you really can't tell the difference.. Pamela Thibodeaux: This was a GREAT video. I would probably caution against using that all black edge control throughout the entire strand. It crusted into my hair and made it extremely matted and tangled after I took the braids out. I had A LOT of breakage and the only difference when I recently put them in was using that product. I would suggest trying it on your regular edges before putting it in, and wear gloves because the black stuff gets under your nails and stains your fingers. Other than that this video was great and I still go back to it when I put my braids in!

Anna: Thanks for the upload!!! I have very tender edges and then the last time I had braids the girl ripped some edges out. I want braids but I've been afraid for my edges again. I will be trying this very soon!
