5 Awkward Stage Hairstyles To Try Whilst Growing Your Hair Out

Here’s some interesting awkward stage hairstyles to try during the hair growth process.

If you’re struggling with motivation during this whole process & want some awesome support to help get you through it, make sure you come and join the Man Buns & Manes Facebook group here: https://manbunsandmanes.com/

As for the hairstyles covered in this video:

- The Matt Healy Style -

- The Boof Look -

- The Medium Slick Back -

- The Longer Slick Back -

- The Half Way Man Bun -

The honest truth with all this though is not every stage of growing your hair out is able to be fixed easy peasy. Sometimes you just gotta either chuck a hat or a beanie over the top of it all or tie up whatever you can and just look like Krusty the Klown for the greater good.

The most important thing to remember during this whole process though is it’s not permanent and not only that, there is SOOOO many more guys growing their hair out now and you’re definitely not alone which is why joining a group like Man Buns & Manes is so helpful: https://manbunsandmanes.com/

I hope you guys enjoy this video today and most of all get some value from it. Remember to stay cool, hit the thumbs up button and come back to visit me next week.

Whoa this light gives my eyes halos, hey guys and welcome back for another hair video for those of you who are new. My name is Thomas, and today I'm gon na be talking about for awkward stage, hairstyles that I wore during my hair growth process. If you've come across this video, it's likely that you are growing your hair out or you're considering it, and you want to avoid looking stupid during the awkward stage which I totally understand now. The the real truth, though, is there's not a solution for every single stage of the orchid stage. So if you came here thinking that that's what I was going to give you, you are wrong, and probably every youtuber that tells you that they can do. That is lying no. But there is the stages that can't be covered by hairstyles, like what I'm going to cover in this video. There are things like Facebook groups, such as man, buns and Mane's, and if you want to join that, the link to that group is in the description box and it's free to join okay, we've got thousands of guys growing their hair out in there. It'S a really good supportive platform and I strongly urge you to join that if you are considering growing hair out okay. Now, let's move forward with the hairstyles, I was going to cover the hairstyles that work with longer and shorter sides. So like duality and then I was gon na talk to you about medium ones and then ones that work with just longer. Okay, so let's get into it. I'Ve got my notes here: Wow, oh yeah, that's right! So the first thing I wanted to tell you it was during my growing up process. I think this photo right here was when I was in about stage 3. I had just finished straightening my hair. I think, and I actually thought this looked good, but I want to tell you: don't do it because now looking back at it, I'm like! Oh, why didn't someone tell me how bad this looked so the sides of my hair were probably about. I know two inches. So we're in stage two here stage: two is the stage and what I did was. I straightened all of my top bit where I had my undercut and I straightened the sides as well so like two inches of side, and I would slick it down because I was like I've got to do something with this hair. It'S actually not a good look. So avoid doing that: okay straightening those sides and sticking it down, and it almost like draws attention to. Oh my God, look how about my hair looks as opposed to just wearing it normal okay, so just avoid that. Okay! So now that we've covered what doesn't work, let's cover what does work. So if we look at my resources here, this photo is, I think I was in stage two here at the sides were about two inches long and I needed a hairdo that was going to work with it now everything else I did. If I tied my hair up like this, the sides would puff out if I straightened it down and straightened this, I would look like the hairstyle that I just told you not to do okay, so what was gon na be the solution? Well, all I had to work with was really curly sides that were Buffy and doing their own thing, and I had this hair to work with on top okay, because I or even working with hair for quite a long time. I knew a few tricks and I used bantu knots and a pencil. Actually, there was two methods that I used. A bantu knots are like we wet your hair, pin them in leave them overnight. Wake up in the morning. Take them out. You'Ve got these really intense. Curls and then killing them with a pencil as well is about wrapping your hair around a pencil using your hair iron to clamp it down and make these crazy curls anyway. This look looked really good, the crazy curls on top once I did them, look attention away from the crazy sides that I was growing and because these were so obnoxious - and this was already obnoxious as well - it kind of made the whole hairstyle go together. If you know what I mean, I actually I thought it was pretty genius what I did there, but yeah I found this was a really good way for me to distract people's eye from what I was doing on the side of my head, whilst looking cool as Well, okay, so it's a skill, that's a skill! All right! The next thing was this: hairstyle actually works really well, when you are in like months five onwards, because you've got like hair. Let'S say this long and you've still got all of this length on top, provided you go out from it on the car pretty much it's just the same method, except now with these parts, you can probably do bantu knots as well, and what happens is when you Take them all out it kind of it's all abduction skills, so there's no real, like expectation for it to be even or look spectacular. You know it's just a messy hairstyle and I call this one. The buff look because it literally it's like everything's all puffy, where this worked for me in particular, I was trying a thing called the wash and go method. So it's where you like use a heap of different products on natural hair, and it's supposed to really like define, curl and stuff, like that. I did a video with my friend Mike, and you can actually watch that that will be up in the cards for you. But yeah: that's when I was rocking the buff look and I found that really worked in both stages of light stages, two and three, which are really really horrible ones and then from 5 onwards, 5 to 9 are also pretty awkward because you can't fully tie your Hair up yeah, it's still like a little bit weird, but this curly hairstyle definitely does help out with that, and I would encourage you to try it if you're struggling to look good during this process, okay and now for the next hairstyle on the list. So this one is just a slicked back really and this one works in the medium stages. So when you're at like, let's say from stage 4 to 6, 4, 5, 6, so there's three stages where this one can really work. You know how I was telling you before I used to straighten the sides, slicked them down. That'S what I was doing rolling. Okay with this one. You straighten the sides straighten the top. This is provided you got curly, hair, that's out of control, and what what I used, particularly for this hairstyle, was things like bloom on hybrid cream clay, bloom on mana, matte paste. That was my blue month phase. What I would do is just right in the hair and use a heap of that product to slick it all back and judging by this picture, it was actually pretty good. I think at the time I think, because I was growing my hair out and I was still a little bit self-conscious. I probably didn't think it looked as good as you know it does in this photo like. If I look back or could speak to this me in this photo I'd say: dude, your hair looks great. You know what all good stage you know what I mean, but now that it looked back at it, it is a pretty cool hairstyle and if you're in you know, stages 4 to 6, definitely give that one a go you. What you want, though, is like some sort of hard hold product or high hold. If you like something, that's quite strong, because I noticed that the sides, even though I'd straighten them, they still had a tendency to prong out, and I didn't want to use bobby pins with a hairstyle like this. So it is important to have like a some sort of high hold strong hold hair product to help flick it back. So that's a medium hairstyle. Now, moving on to the longer hair styles to try in the awkward stages of growing hair out, these ones are really suitable for like stages 6 and onwards. So when you've got about six inches of hair out here, these ones can really work. You'Ve still got a bit of prong enos you've still got a bit of unruliness. It can't fully get into a man bun but you're nearly there. Ok, that's where we're at with this. The two styles number one: it's pretty much a follow on from the previous hairstyle that I told you about so the slicked-back using a lot of high hold product. This one is pretty much exactly the same, just the longer version. I remember making this one with the bloom on hybrid cream clay as well, really really nice, sleek style, probably wouldn't wear it all the time. I remember I do remember like straightening it, my hair. All the time was a little bit of a bother and, if you're trying to grow it too, you do want to avoid peat as much as you can, because you're trying to grow that and like beautiful, healthy hair, so having it too hot, is not always a Great option, nevertheless, it is an option in case you need to go out or you need to go somewhere and look good. It'S a thing, the other hairstyle that really really worked for me during the orchid stages, particularly when the hair was longer. It'S still not enough to go into the bun was the half way man button. Now I remember very vividly making this tutorial the half way man bun here it is by this time so like hair. That was all around here that was growing out. Some of it could actually fit up into the button, so there was like this really weird mix of like yes in bun no in bun. You know it was like all over the shop in it that my hair was like. Ah, we're kind of half in half out, we don't know yet. So what I would do is, I would group all of the hair that could go into my bun up into the bun and put it like about here on my head and then from there. I would use bobby pins to secure the other bits that actually wouldn't fit okay, so I would stretch these back to as far as they could go, get my bobby pins wedge them in and then leave the back dangling down kind of like Jon Snow ish. I don't know if you look at the photo it pretty much. It illustrate exactly what I just said, but yeah I found this hairstyle looked really freaking cool. The only downside with it was. You could see the bobby pins like who cares man like by that stage? Pretty sure everybody that knows, you will know that you're growing your hair out so like who gives a it actually looks really cool, though, and I would encourage that you try it. This is also another like stage six onwards, sort of hairstyle that you can look forward to outside of all of these hairstyles you're pretty much. These are what I found really worked for me. You might have something else different, but if none of these hairstyles were working for me at any given time, what I would do is just chuck a hat on or chuck a beanie on or put something over the top of it just to get rid of it Or I would practice not giving a and just wear it up with all the sides hanging out and not give a that's, also a good option too, like if you can't find anything that works or you're struggling to make it work practicing with it. Looking and just going out in public is also a really good skill and something that you should try during this process as well it'll test yourself, a steam. It will it's all a bit of fun. All you got to do is remember that it's not permanent and that it's gon na end soon. You know like once you get out to the longest stages you're like thank yourself that you did it but yeah. So I hope you found this video useful. That brings us to the end of it if you are still growing your hair out, which, if you're watching till now, you definitely are growing your hair out. You Know Who: I think one of the great things about growing out your hair is that as it grows you can try many styles with different lengths, I know that sometimes you don’t know what to do with it and it annoys you but honestly for me it’s a fun journey.

laughing lavendar: Currently rocking the "halfway man bun" (8:10). I am a girl growing my pixie out and honestly I find your videos super helpful because they're very practical and encouraging, plus I really like the hairstyles you demonstrate. Thank you!!!

Jakub Bronk: Also if your hair is really long on the top, and you are growing out just the sides. You can do a parted low man bun with just the hair on the top. My hair on the top is probably around 12 inches, and on the sides it's 3,5 inches, and it works perfectly.

Joshua Hubbard: Just started wearing the half-way man bun and I’m really loving it! Great video as always Thomas

Trav White: I'm an awkward stage survivor

Kartik Korde: This was exactly what I wanted during my hair growth journey. Thanks Thomas! Cheers mate!

Sorick Rohith Hutheram: Love your content really helpful information for someone whose growing their hair out

Khalid Alhumam: Hey Thomas...everyone keeps asking how long does it take to grow a man bun. I want to ask how do I know I made it lol. Sometimes when my hair wet, I can put my hair in a manbun. Other times the sides just puff out...So, any ideas on how do I know if I made it or not? Thx

Tubax: In the awkward stage I just focus on making my hair as healthy as possible and rocking my waves (2c). I always just have 3 hairstyles: Off-center part, side part and man bun with bobby pins. I recommend not using bobby pins daily as they can cause breakage for the hair at the front and that will make the stage longer. Using heat frequently will frizz up your natural texture when you do rock it so really just don't touch heat at all except if you have a wedding or something.

Jeremiah Córdova: I'm growing out my undercut man bun, this will really help me when I get through the akward phase. I just started growing it out about 1 month ago

Cameron Gormley: Hey man, I’m even growing my hair for a year now on July 11th and it isn’t long at all compared too most people’s hair, I started with bald back and sides and a short top. I’ve taken a photo every day.

Nicholas Johnson: In my eyes, your hair is stunningly beautiful, no matter what style you rock!!! I have short hair myself, but I LOVE long hair, and I thank you for your wonderful videos/content!! Extra unicorns, glitter, rainbows and sparkles shimmer upon you this Pride season, handsome and charming Mr. Thomas!!!!! :D

S. D.: Hi Thomas, great hair. I've been growing all my hair out since March 2020. Can you help me understand how long it'll take before I can actually tie them all up? I don't understand phases so, in months maybe?

Brady Galloway: Haven't watched you in months, Thomas. The hair is luxurious!

D. S.: I’m going on to about 9 months of hair growth with barely 4 inches. Idk if it’s because I grew it out in the winter or just a slower growth rate. But damn do I miss my foot long of hair

T H: Would I get rid of high porosity if I stopped always straightening my hair with fan and a brush? And are there any tips for growing our exactly curly hair? Because what I've seen here is mostly about straightened hair.

jay quick: I liked the first style! The curl worked well.

Abhinove Nagarajan.S: Thank you for this video! Also, how do you dry your hair after washing it? Do you use a towel and/or a hair dryer?

Christian Torreon: Kinda lucky that medium length sides suit me, I only had an awkward stage at 2nd and 3rd month coz my sides grow horizontally. On my 4th month, sides lay flat and i only need my bangs trimmed.

Anton Haq: My first year of growing was spent mostly wearing a hat. I am used to hats to the degree that it feels as natural wearing a hat as it does without.

2Dead4Bed: My hair is super wavy and has a ton of volume in a pretty awkward stage my hair is a little past my eyes when straight

Its_ZakD: Month 5 here from short back and sides slightly longer on top checking in. 3b/c curls..Tough times.

Disasterpiece: I actually really like "awkward stage" hair. It's like messy emo femboy hair. It's kinda cute ngl ^w^

kafrko: So i'm really really practicing your last advice right now, because i want to be finished with my hairstyle in one minute. :D

Jinaria: 4:38 I’m actually trying to get my hair to look like that I’m hoping it’ll get that way by next year

Sponge: My hair just never grows on the sides and back and only on top. I currently just have it tied back on top with a short bit in the front to hide the hair that isn't long enough to tie. My sides are a bit mad but I just use Bobby pins to pull it back

Dylan Schneider: Am I the only one who keeps getting their hair buzzed because I keep thinking 'No wait I want to keep my undercut' then a few days later struggles with the 'but should I grow it all out.' I've done this like 4 times at least. I don't know why I'm struggling so much with this. I used to not care how my hair looked as long as it's long, but now I can't just ignore my hair like I used to be able to.

Keith Smack: What I used to do was split my hair on top down the middle and use that to cover up my sides so it didn't look as bad.

king sky: Love your videos keep up the good work

Daniel Steven Ladino Rey: My hair naturally feels kind of dry, no matter which product I use. Can I still grow long hair for a men bun?

scotturban54: I'm getting much closer. Can put everything In a tie but just barely and loose some from the front at points

LordyzDevz: Im like 1 more month till I can man bun the back of my hair. Ima get the sides fade and it’s gonna look good

Gar: i started from a 4 buzz cut all the way around, now i have about 2 1/2 to 3 inches

Jon Hoover: I loved all the funny edits in this one Thomas!

Ahmed xix: Loved the video . hair goals!

Саша: Bc of covid I cant cut my hair so my sides are at a stage 2 and the top is about 7 inches long, and idk how the hell the sides arent poofy at all yet, so this is fun... unfortunately my mom is prolly gonna make me cut it all off when covid pandemic is done screwing us over

Shivam Yadav: Finally the wait is over and my insperation is Back, Love U From India Bro ❤❤❤

JB Piano Creations: I think I'm entering the awkward stage. Have to hang tight. Geez

daynphillips: So needed this video !!

ayham: Shiiiiit it reaaaaally help me out .. like really thx man ❤️ keep doing rare/useful content like this

Ced Wicked: im lucky i decided to grow my hair while in quarantine so i only have to worry about is my mom wanting to cut my hair

Abdullah l: I've been growing my hair out for 10 months now I don't give a shit about people And i loved how I looked Bur i wasn't grooming my said burn So that fucks up the look but i still love it

INSEPTRO: Hi Thomas, just wondering what you did so that your hair got softer, straighter, and less frizzy in the video?

Karan Rana: Hey.. your hair looks greatWant to know what hair treatments you have done till now or when we can have that treatments.. The last picture of yours in which you have the Jon snowish hair.. I am on that stage.

Mahmoud Qweima: I'm 3 months in growing my uner cuts and they look horrible , I've thought of cutting all my hair more than once cause of that and I've been growing it for 8 months

Tom Ral: You look better with a stubble as opposed to beard dude and love your hair. I'm on medium stage.

HellaKittyNL: You mention something about being self conscious at 6:10 Have you been always like that, or only in regard to your hair. And when/why did it stop?

Blackfyre: I'm slowly creeping into the awkward stage. Pray for me, my comrades

Marcelo Velarde: Youre are the prove that holding on the akward stage actually worth it.. You looked like crap at some points I remember.. But now you look so cool...

wth12: That famous awkward stage really is subjective.

sangbou Chang: I started with undercut my top hair is around 7 inch's n sides is half inches I seriously don't know what hair to go for

vaden: Hey Thomas, I am going into Year 8 (7th where I live, the USA.), and if we end up going back to school I want to look my best, so I got my hair cut around 3 inches and now it's down to my neck, but now my man bun is not looking as great as it did, is there something I can do to thicken my hair to make it look better or something I can do to make it look like my ideal man bun?
