Ouidad Rake And Shake Curly Hair Styling Technique

A curly hair styling routine is just as, if not MORE important than the styling products we use to enhance our natural curls. No technique is better than another, it really boils down to what gives you the results you desire. In this video, I am revisiting Ouidad's The Rake and Shake Method for styling my wavy curly hair to see what effects this technique has to offer.

What up yall! I'm Jannelle. New videos every week!

What up y'all and welcome back if it's your first time here, my name is janelle and in today's video we are going to be doing the we dad famous rake and shake technique if you're not familiar with this technique, then welcome to the video, but really this Technique has been around for years. It is kind of like the original curly hair styling routine. It'S very good for beginners, really anybody who wants natural definition to their curls without having to use anything than the stylers that you already have on hand and your hands on hand. All i'm going to be using in this video and all you will need for this technique - is your hands. Your freshly washed hair, your favorite leave-in a styler, a clip to keep your hair out of the way because we will be working in sections and then some water on hand to keep your hair damp. I started off this routine with the curl smith multitasking, leave-in conditioner, and i applied in the shower. This is typically the point where i would apply stylers and no additional water, but because i will be manipulating and also because i'll be working in sections versus all over. I want to ensure that my hair is nice and moisturized, so the style lasts, so we will be working in sections, i'm going to take smaller sections, because i want more natural, looser clumps. If you want bigger, clumps, take bigger sections, we are going to start with the we dad vital, curl, soft, defining mousse and i'm going to try and just get a drop of this okay. I did it. I'M scared. It'S going to come bursting out just going to take a drop of it, and then we are going to smooth it and rake it through. This section can break through a few good times to really make sure the product is dispersed. If you want less frizz and more definition at the root, you can go all the way up to the root. If you want more volume, i recommend, especially if you have fine hair, stay a little bit further away. I'M gon na break this into three little sections. So just use two fingers, then i'm going to pinch my hair between and we are going to smooth down. Then when we get to our ends, we're gon na shake and shake kind of a side to side motion, and this is going to help the curls fall. Where they would, naturally, i also like to come back in and shake it at the root pinch smooth and see how it's smoothing down the clumps and then we shake add water as needed happen to grab too much of your styler like i just did just go Ahead and go in at the big chunk, then you can just break up individual sections. So for this top section, i'm going to work from the back and working from the back. One of the reasons is: i've got a cowlick to the back and i'm trying to direct some of this hair back, so it sits naturally on the back of my head versus coming forward, which my cowlick likes it to do also help with volume at the root Gives me the opportunity to style it up direct it up, lift it away from my scalp shake from the top it's my most finicky section, also loosest again over directing from my root and shaking hair, has been raped and shaped. Now, what i want to do to help it fall back into a natural shape, is i'm going to kind of let it fall behind me and shake it out a bit all right, gon na air dry a little bit of the way finish with diffusing and now, Let'S see some results, would you look at that fastest drying time? Ever. First thing i want to point out is the bottom of my hair looks slightly stringy. Some of the reason there is the look of a little bit of stringiness is because there are uneven layers. Some of it was due to damage some was my hair. Cutting some of this is the same length, but it's not something that i am feeling is how much smoother my hair feels everywhere. Definitely i'm sure a mix of like product. What i did today, but also i i feel like i - can feel the effects of really smoothing the cuticle down. The other thing that i am noticing and loving is the like natural separation in my curls all, while having a ton of definition, hear me out you've lightly, seen my hair more defined, it has had an overall, more definitive look, but i don't know that i have Seen this much definition in the individual curls, while all also being separated to give it a more voluminous look. Does that make sense like look at some of those like you can see everywhere: ropey curl, ropey, curl, ropey curl. Some of these i have not been able to get to show out at all a lot of times what happens for me, if is, if i try to go for more definition, it's almost like too much manipulation and the curls will kind of panic being forced into Clumps and then they won't curl at all, and so considering how much i manipulated my hair to still see all that definition and like just look at all those clumps 2013. I think it was my first curly haircut ever and it was by a wee dad stylist in florida and they taught me the rake and shake there. So it's been years since i have tried this um, i actually cannot remember the last time. I'Ve even raked products in my hair other than when i'm like doing denman brush, and if this is something that you want to try. This is a really good technique, i think, really for most curl types, but especially for looser curl types that want to maintain their fullness without being over clumped. So you lose the volume right like this is kind of the perfect in between, and i feel like it just has such a natural like fluff and lift to it. That is the rake and shake technique from we dad. Have you tried it? Do you love it hate it? Have you not tried it? Are you thinking about trying it all right, y'all? That is a wrap on this video? Thank you so much for watching. I hope you enjoyed and if you did, please give a big thumbs up and again. If it was your first time here, hey i'm janelle and if you haven't hit that subscribe button. Yet what are you waiting for? nichole bushmire: Janelle I hope you doing well! I miss seeing your videos. You really helped change my life with your hair advice and amazing and silly personality ❤️❤️❤️

Elizabeth Orsillo: I like how it was light outside when your hair was wet and now it’s dark out when it’s dry!

Karen Quintana: I love this fluffy and defined look. I sometimes don’t like my denman routine. Gonna try this. ❤️

Chappysmom: I've said for years that my hair is perfectly happy to curl, but if i try to get it to curl in a different way, it basically refuses to do anything at all!

Allison: I love that this video was only 8 minutes! It's so appreciated when someone just gets right to it.

Leigh: I'm so glad you filmed this! I love Ouidad products, and I always see rake and shake on their website. I kind of assumed it was a technique for tighter curls and wouldn't work on my waves. I'll have to try it out! Thank you!

Jessica Goggin: I used this technique the other day and it worked so great! Thanks for the demo!

Renee KH: Going to have to try.... I went to a Deva cut trained gal who used & taught me a ribboning & scrunching technique. When she did it my hair came out beautifully defined & frizz-free, but too defined for my face. I need slightly messy beach look volume to soften my features - a super defined look just makes the ugliness of my facial features pop (seriously). And the ribboning technique in my untrained hands is unachievable anyway. My problem is walking the tightrope between frizz & nice volume - as I live in a very humid Gulf coastal environment. I will try this, though. Since seeing her I just use an overall clumping, plopping, & scrunching technique - but I still hate day 1. Disorganized with no volume. It takes day 2 & beyond for me to have the waves & volume I like.

Susan Meadows: I am definitely trying this! Your hair looked amazing! Wow. ❤️

Andrea Schaaf: I think this looks amazing. I think it would be a little worth it to maybe try to define the top most layer a bit to get more definition on those top pieces but otherwise this looks like a great way to distribute product and give your scrunching hands a break!

Rachelle P: Yes I love this method so much. Its been my favorite and most regular styling routine.

Christine Horwath: Hey I just got my very first ouidad cut a week ago and was having trouble figuring out how to do the shaking part lol at the end you clamp your finger down! Now I’m going to try doing it myself on my new cut that I love! My stylist went to fast for me to see exactly what he was doing but I loved the results when he was done and ouidad stylists say it’s 50% cut and 50% technique yay

Mel Mo: i got my hair done a few days ago and they used this method and i have 3c hair on the wavier side and my hair looked AMAZING afterwards. ima try it on my own using this vid

Dozey Mare: Love your results Janelle ❤️

Mitzi Livingston: I just found you and I'm so happy! Hopefully, as I watch your videos, you'll have a recipe on how to deal with Midwest Humidity and someone who sweats just thinking about humidity!

Lacey Forthun: I'm definitely going to try this! This will be a way for me to distribute my products more evenly, I've been having problems with that haha

Jolene Cuevas: OMG i just got my hair done at the Ouidad salon and was wondering how they did it. Thank you!

Charla Moore: Janelle, where’d you go? I’ve enjoyed your videos. Your personality is refreshing. I hope you decide to deliver more content

James F: Thanks Jannelle. Really informative video. We have the same hair and curl type so I’ll try this. One question, did you still scrunch your hair after the routine to make the curls come back? Thanks

Jeanette Y.: Looks amazing - need to try it.

Lara Furar: I guess I have been at this a long time (~2010?), because this is the OG technique and I am still using it. It's the default. Thanks for highlighting it now!

Elizabeth Thomas: Just trying to get used to the Denman brush but this is a great option so I don't just feel like a semi-failure every wash... i can balance out the "WTF" and "oooh fancy" results! lol Also, super fan girl... I'll be in Philly for a cousins wedding in OCtober and the girly nerd in me wishes you'd do some sort of meet up. Nevermind it's a Pandemic and who knows how many fans live in just the Philly area. hah :)

Somer Spence: Love your energy!

karen bardini: I honestly can't tell if your hair looks different than any other video ... meaning I always love love love your results no matter what!

Dina Jones: It definitely works best when you sing "Shake!" every time you shake. Just ask my cats ...

KCG 123: Hey beautiful lady!! Haven’t seen anything from you in a while! Hope you’re doing okay! ❤️❤️❤️

di agostino Audrey: LOL ~ I JUST had MY first Rake n Shake cut and I'm in WPB! I LOVE my hair now and yours looks fantastic! I want the products she put on my hair, all Ouidad.. My hair was smooth for DAYS and smelt so good. ;)

Brenda & Don: I get the Quidad cut and that’s how the style my hair but for the life of me I can’t do it. You have beautiful curls.

Curlycurl Birdy girl: Your hair turned out super soft looking while keeping the definition AND volume. Like your hair version 2.0 Although I'm not sure if using a mousse for this technique was the best choice...? So hard with getting the right amount and then distributing it evenly... Idk... I picture using a runny gel when I try this some time soon. Your instructions (again) right on the spot!

Marie Faulkner: Gosh you’re fun and adorable to watch!!! You have a lot of personality :) my hair is the same with manipulation. I don’t know if it’s as wavy as yours though!

Liz M: Beautiful hair!! Is your hair in layers or just one length?

Evelyn Jackson: You have inspired me! I'm gonna give it a whirl.

have3kids too: So, I'm always late on these comments. I watched your video last night and was like, hmmm, ok. This morning was wash day and I did what I call a modified rake and shake. I like to put my products on in the shower before I get out. So, after I rinsed my conditioner really well and squeezed all the water out, I applied my curl cream and raked it through, which I normally do. Then applied my gel, raking it through like I always do. Then I did the shaking thing all over my head, kind of sloppy like lol which I've never done. I did all this upside down, like normal. I flip my head back and shake my hair like normal and was like omg. This kinda worked. I plopped for 20 minutes like normal, scrunched the excess water out. I always add a tad more gel, scrunching this in and let my hair air dry for a bit before diffusing. I like that the shaking part lifted the hair off my scalp and gave me some volume. Thanks for the video.

AC AC291: Going to try this!

capulet222: hey i love ur videos and i recently just figured out i have wavy/curly hair... my hair is driving me nuts though, because the top part of my hair is way curlier than underneath which is just an ugly wave... do you have any tips?

Naima Irfan: I use flax seed gel as leave in conditioner.

Susan LaVecchia: oh God, I am so going to try this.

Lydia Flores: all this is new to me. Most of my life my hai r has been short. But now I am letting it grow out. I have time to play with it and I feel it has wanted to show its curl for years. Thanks for yourinstruction. Love your personal comments.

Etling Galeano: I wish she would have shown the back. I am going to try it! ty

ChrissyATX: Hey are you okay? It’s been 4mo since you last posted and I am genuinely getting worried. I hope you’re okay and just busy loving life

Jenn Leah: So you're able to (at least somewhat) control your cowlick? I'm not sure if I have one unbelievably wonky cowlick, or more like a cluster of 3 (which I suspect is the case), but I have a lock of hair that's just past the center of my head (so sorta at the start of my crown) that falls straight back, even though the hair on either side goes to either side, and then there's 2 little sections directly under that section, so the center of the crown, that grow almost directly to the right, even though logically this should all be reversed. There is NO controlling this that I have found, and if I even attempt to part it differently, best case scenario it just refuses and worst case (and what usually happens) is all 3 little sections fray out near my scalp and turn into a matted nightmare. My super long way of asking if I should just tough this out no matter what and maybe I can train my hair to just stop it! Just stop being so stubborn back there?

lulujean88: I need a dupe for the Ouidad - $26 - and I get a discount because I have a cosmetologist's license. For $26, I expect it to make me taller and thinner! ; )

Whitney l: Trying it!!

Liz C: I liked ur hair with more layers.......looks nice now but loved it layered! More volume..

Carol Ann: I'm going to try this! What part of Philly do you live in? I'm Delco.

Laura Dahlen: How wet was your hair when you started?

Teri Hammonds: Jannelle, wya Girl? I am missing your videos!!!!

Suzanne Dotson: I hope you're doing well, I miss your content.

Half Hippie Half Horror: What happened to your embracing gray hair? I’m confused. This is a newer video but your hair is dyed brown ???

Kxce: that aint no curl just let it airdry

Marfantabulous: Where are you these days girl. Miss ya.
