What'S good everybody, it's your main girl mel. Did you hear that amanda? We need to turn up the volume. Let'S try this again. What'S good everybody, it's your main girl! Now i've said it before and i'll say it once more: the bigger the hair, the harder they stare. I caught you, okay and today i'm gon na help you throughout this video, we're gon na be talking about all things. Volumizing, i'm here to help you navigate what products to use, including my top recommendations, i'll, be demonstrating different styling methods, i'll share different tools that you can use to your advantage and for a bonus i'm going to throw in some sleep and maintenance tips so buckle in Everyone is welcome. These hair tips are for wavy, curly and even coily hair tights. So if you want to know the tips of the pros, keep watching this video, why am i i just feel like i look like a freaking bobble head now, i'm actually going to be taking you through my whole volume routine. So together we'll be styling and to start we're gon na focus on products. First and foremost, if this one isn't obvious to you, then i think it's time to shampoo not once but two your hair just cannot be voluminous if it's being weighed down by oils and dirts and debris caught in your hair and if you're, only washing your hair About once a week, then make sure you are using a clarifying shampoo and, alternatively, if you have very flat roots and hair dryness, isn't really a problem for you, then volumizing shampoos and conditioners actually do help to plump up the strands. Just make sure you are cleansing, that is the first step of prep, then, on your wet hair, which you may need to dampen down. There are a variety of products that you can apply now. Typically, some of these need to be activated by heat, and so, if you are someone that does a lot of blow drying, the thickening tonic is a fabulous option and it's easy because it's a spray. That being said, this is not a heat protectant, so be aware of that the product i'm actually going to apply today for this routine is from the inky list. It'S their peptide volumizing, hair treatment. This is the most affordable option that i'm sharing with you today, and i want to share with you how effective it still is and can be on a budget, it's just a very, very liquidy product which you can apply evenly throughout your hair. You want to be thorough with your volumizing treatments or, if you're looking to just really emphasize the volume in the root area, then you can also go ahead and spot treat. This particular product is best for fine to maybe medium hair textures. But if you have a coarser hair texture, the ag plastique this is their extreme volumizer i'll show you what she looks like it gets me every time, um they're, both very liquidy, but this one is a little bit more as you can see, gooey and it's better For thicker coarser hair - that is all over me, i'm so silly. The key is not to apply too many products to your hair, but being thorough that whatever product you did apply to your hair is all over. I am going to wastefully wipe this away now and probably cry about it later. Finally, an option, that's great for all hair types, except maybe low porosity - is the matrix volume booster with organic aloe and rice water. I say that if you have low porosity, you might want to be wary about using this product, and that's only if you have an issue with using aloe based products. Aloe leaf juice is the first ingredient in this product and it definitely gives your hair. This almost seaweedy kind of feel, but what's really nice about it, is that it is very hydrating, it's nice and lightly volumizing. Otherwise, it can be used on pretty much all curl types and you can use it on its own or mix it into some of your other stylers styles. That would ideally be water-based. This is a classic. This is the curl keeper original liquid styler is a very liquidy product, so there's no oils or butters in here, which means it's very lightweight, especially on very fine hair and it being very liquidy as well makes it very easy to apply without having to be too Heavy-Handed so this is what i'm, using today, i'm going to thoroughly distribute this throughout my hair, beautiful beautiful now i do want to point out that this is a protein free product and protein in your product, especially if you have damaged color treated hair, is a great Way to add extra bounce in volume to your hair, and if you put those in a foam then you have got, i mean you got you're going to have great hair. This is the curls with bouncy strength, volume, foam and you can apply this to your wet hair after you've, styled and put in any creams. If that's what you're using or i would recommend putting it in beforehand so prep your hair with some pumps of this foams are typically more lightweight than mousses. A mousse in an aerosol can can still be heavy. It can be great for volumizing, but you might have to be aware if you have really fine hair. Typically foams in a pump bottle are more water-based, which means they are going to be again lighter weight. The perfect recipe for volumizing now you most certainly would not use all of these products in one routine, but no matter what you are using, make sure that you are distributing it thoroughly throughout your hair from roots to tips and now, let's get into some styling methods. Now, as you get familiar with your curl pattern, everyone develops a preference on how they like to define the curls in its wet stage. Some people prefer to just use their fingers. Maybe some twisting some people prefer to do brush styling. It doesn't matter what you choose. Just as long as you are making sure that you are separating the hair so that not too much of it is clumping together, which will make your volume look less voluminous and that you are brushing up and out to get more lift and volume in your roots. There are two different ways that you can separate the hair. You can work with vertical lines along your head. This is my preferred method. I find it gives a lot more movement throughout the hair and it tends to work better if you have a lot of different layers throughout the hair and over on the other side of my hair, i'm demonstrating horizontal partings. I personally don't find these as easy to do, but you might like these results better for you if you have more one length, hair or just very long layering. The main rule of thumb here is that you're not brushing downwards you're, always brushing up and out you'll see what the results of both sides look like in a minute, but as for your top section, let's get into volumizing hair, the most challenging part is, if you Have very strong partings now the philosophy of styling, the top of your head, is rooted with the same rules, we're styling the hair up, letting it fall back, especially towards the crown. If your hair gets very flat at the crown very easily, then you want to make sure that you are brushing up and off of the scalp and as i move from the back of the crown to the front hairline, i'm alternating from left to right of my Head, i am taking diagonal sections and almost creating a herringbone pattern throughout the top of my head. This will allow for maximum movement, where you'll be allowed to flip your hair from side to side without committing and without seeing too many partings, it falls the most naturally and, as you can see, when you reach the front hairline, you are left with the triangle section That is at your bangs, where you may be struggling with a parting. So here's what you do, no matter if you have a side part or a middle part. First, you want to confuse your roots, make sure that the hair is really wet and then brush from side to side up and down. This will kind of reset that area so that it doesn't fall into its natural part and then to finish styling. This section you're going to take your next diagonal parting right through your natural part. That'S it on the perpendicular, keep on going with the same movements. We'Ve been doing, brushing up and off the scalp, bringing it back until she is complete. So now that that's all styled you can already see there is a lot of movement and a lot of space for the curls to flourish in the roots already now another trick that you can do to create more separation and avoid too much clumping in the hair. That you have to do while it is still wet, is take a wide tooth comb and just comb through those clumps very gently. Just one pass through each section: that'll help to break things up and turn up that volume. But there are a few more tools that we can use: we're ready to move into the next phase of styling, which is through the drawing - and there are many different tools that we can use to add things up. This is called the obinacci by curly life. It'S very similar in design to pin up curl contraption devices brushes. If that's what you could call, this were used in the 40s to create victory. Curls and pin up looks so you know this is going to be great for creating very vintage looks and in particular, this root. Volumizer works really well in wavy to curly hair. Now another method is clipping your roots, i'm not particularly a fan of this, especially if you're using these two prong clips. I find that they can get caught in the hair very easily and then create breakage at the roots instead use claw clips. I really like these ones from pro keeper because i feel like they allow enough space for the curl to curl up without crushing them and without combing them too much like there's a lot of space between these prongs. But realistically you can do this with any jaw. Claw clip what's nice about this is even if you are air drying, your hair, it will lift and remove too much weight off of the hair at your scalp to prevent it from stretching out and keep a very lifted. Look at the root. So with these in you can air dry or diffuse. This tool is very helpful for creating volume and curly hair, because it allows you to quickly dry the hair, as well as dry, in a scrunched up position to really encourage bounce. If you're going to use this scrunching method, make sure that you hold for a few seconds before moving on to the next section, use medium to low heat, to minimize damage and don't rush the process just trust the process taking just a little bit of time. To do this will help your hair have a lot more bounce to it. Now, if you put these things in your hair, while it was wet, i do recommend removing them before your hair is completely dry, just to make sure if there are any weird kinks in the hair that they don't set in place too aggressively. And now i can go ahead and finish drying either air drying or diffusing since most of the moisture and the excess weight of water in my hair has been removed. But on the flip side you can apply these to your hair, once it's about 80 to 90 percent dry, to lift the roots and then put the volume in then. So you have a couple options. You have several options, another option and this one can work really. Well, on coilier hair is to take a couple of pics and shove. It interlocking them to help really lift the root, i'm just using these picks as a demonstration, but there are better tools to use those, although i do love these picks. These are the sprinkles i like that they are very spacious, especially for waves and curls. So you don't, you know, break up too much of the definition at the root now this is where i'm already at, and i haven't even done any fluffing or scrunching. I pretty much always finish off my hair routines with an oil or serum. I prefer one with some silicone just to help kind of lock in all of that hydration and this one. The ghost oil is a very light weight. However, if your hair is already very silky, it falls very easily. Oils are emollient, and so that silkiness will not necessarily help with your volume so see what i'm doing here, you can just scrunch and shake what your mama gave you your fingers without any oils. Now, while we're on the topic of picks, we know how to use them, because we've seen them demonstrated on curly and coily hair by fluffing out from the root. But if you do have more wavy hair, instead of brushing out which could stretch out the root area. You almost want to back comb, so lift the section and comb back towards the scalp and if your roots are really silky up there and they get oily fast, then use a texturizing product like a texture, spray or a volumizing powder, because this will help to add Some grit to the hair to really hold that look in place, this technique, where i'm holding up the hair and then slowly releasing the curls strand by strand. While i spray the texturizing product is referred to as butterflying, and it's really going to help to set in that separation and sort of pc texture. This is the bumble and bumble dry, spun, texture spray, and this right here would be the complete wash day, not a scalp in sight. I can flip my hair, wherever i like, and i will let you decide which side has more volume from what styling, if you're, seeing what i'm seeing. There'S a lot more volume for all of the layering that i have with the vertical parting. So quick little side by side for you, you choose what you need to do to achieve your desired finished. Look now. I do need a better haircut with more layers in the back, but all of these techniques help me to achieve this long, lasting volume that, if i would like to keep when i go to sleep, i'm going to use one of these comb clips. Okay - and this is a bonus tip - this is something that i discovered a few weeks ago and we've been obsessed, give your hair a flip and gather the hair at your crown, then you're going to take one of these comb clips and shove it right up against Your scalp then slip on your sleep cap, your scarf, the bonnet that you wear to bed, and this will absolutely help keep your hair at the crown lifted. Furthermore, throughout the week, don't be afraid to use things like dry shampoo if your hair gets oily the living proof perfect, hair day, advanced, clean dry shampoo is currently my favorite and or go ahead with more of your texture, spray or volumizing powders. I love this for creating updos and styles like that they will make your hair feel like crap, i'm kidding, but they do add this grittiness to it to create texture and lift and hold with the volume but listen. These are just the steps that we have to take if we want to live with bigger and better hair days, and the best part is none of these curls come at the cost of sacrificing curl definition. Sara M.: Yes !! This is the video I needed so badly because my roots are so flat. I never seem to know how to get volume in that area. Thank you so much Mell!!!! I'm sure it'll be so helpful as usual!! ❤❤❤

Amy Hanna: I would love to see you do some of these techniques on someone who has extremly low density, very fine hair because all of my hair would fit in one of those small claw clips, I probably have less than a quarter of the amount of hair you do. I struggle with volume, and find it very hard to create it using those brushes as there is just so little of it, sectioning the hair is very difficult. I must say many of your tips have helped me and it is way better than it ever has been, so thank you so much for all your wonderful videos!

Monica Nawar: MA'AM who gave you the ✨ audacity ✨ to look this good? Daaaang those curls are POPPIN!

lila ♡: Thank you so much Mel! I will definetley use this routine with my wash day tomorrow . Do you think you could do a video about the easiest and fastest way to cut drying time? I usually have a pretty busy scedule and both diffusing and air drying take too long for me. Any ideas? Thanks so much, and Happy Texture Tuesday! ❤❤❤

Lisa Smilek: Love this!! I was needing some volumizing tips ❤️❤️ At our house we would love a vid about cutting and styling men’s and boys’ hair. My teenage boys are growing out their curly hair and using my products :-)

Deanna: Happy Texture Tuesday!!! So excited for this video I need all the tips for root volume!! Much love and happiness!! Xoxo

Nicole Benavides: You don’t understand how much I needed this I’ll be going tomorrow for my 2nd curly cut for more layers! And I just struggle with volume!!

Luz Hdz: I used the diagonal styling and it was amazing. I have wavy hair and my waves don’t always start at the base, but I noticed that by doing this it helped with that. Also on day 5 and still looks good. Saw Amanda doing this on Insta a couple days ago.

Lisa F: I love you Mel! I have learned so much about curly hair from watching your videos. I need to try your styling technique with the front of the hair. Always a challenge for me. I feel like every wash day is an experiment in styling!!

Deanna Ramirez: "The bigger the hair, the harder they stare." When I ask my husband what feature of mine is his favorite, he says my big hair.

Val G: Your hair looks amazing as always! Can’t wait to try some of these tips.

Alicia Boggs: Great timing with this video. My hair was so thick and had great volume before I used K18. It made my hair start falling out so now it's the complete opposite.

Rachelle P: Thank you Mell and Amanda. So creative with the content . Thank you for your knowledge and Happy texture Tuesday!!

Diana Estrada: Thanks Mel!! I struggle with finding ways to make my flat ass roots get some volume!! Going to try all these tips!

Karen Lambert: Thank you for this ! I have a lot of hair but it's so silky from the roots down a couple of inches. Can't wait to try!

Daniela R: Using the wide tooth comb to separate curls for volume when wet lives on!!! woot, woot! Your hair is looking fantastic!

Rain: i’d just like to add, try washing and brushing your hair upside down! it helps me shampoo my scalp more effectively especially at the top of my head, therefore removing more oil and buildup from my scalp. and when i style my hair, brushing and combing upside down helps lift up my roots a lot. combine this with mell’s tips and im pretty sure your hair will just end up defying gravity lmao

Rafael Palma: Hi Mell! I love your videos, they have helped me so much in my curly hair journey❤️Love from Portugal to you and of course Amanda❤️

Aneta Czerniak: it was washday today so I tried this... I have to say I was very sceptical as my hair looked horrible in a cast until I scrunched it out and it turned out AMAZING!!!! I haven't even diffused, i let it air dry as we are having a pretty hot day here in the UK. My hair looks the best it has done in a while!!! thank you

J: I just got my hair cut and I'm LOVING the volume! Thanks for the great tips!! I would like to see a video about semi permanent hair color options that are safe for curly hair!

Leslie del Valle: Dear Mel, I have curly hair and was on my own ( styling and caring for it) for 63 years until I found you! My sisters, mother and all other relatives have fine straight hair. Anyway, I’m so thankful for your blog: better late than never!!❤

The Fit Hippie: This was EXACTLY what I needed! Thank you for sharing your fabulous knowledge!

Irma Radinson: I use two hair clip for my crown, it does wonders for my fine curls. Thanks for all the info u share!♥️

Susan Meadows: Thanks Mel! I needed this video like now! I can always count on you girl! ❤️

LexT Sings: I tend to struggle with only brushing my hair without finger curling when it comes to the roots like you did in the video, because the curls turn out stringy… Is there anything i’m doing wrong or is it because of the type of curl pattern I have?

Jami Alecksi Halliday: Hey Mel! I love watching your videos, but I still struggle with my curls. I have combination curls. I get some coils, some wave, and then some almost completely straight. I also really struggle with volume at my roots. Roots are completely flat. And then the hair at the back/bottom of my head is completely straight. What can I do to help my curls?!

Sophia Aloeristok: I always appreciate the volume tips

MaryAnn: You and your hair looks amazing. Love this video and great techniques to try out. I stink at sectioning my hair when defining. I'm determined to get it right.

SH: Mel, this is so helpful. As a wavy/curly with wee bit of frizz, this vid gives me some great ideas for lift at the roots. I enjoy your vids, and if nobody has told you recently, you are a really luscious beauty, starting with your glorious mane! Thanks for the tips!

Erin lil squishy: Love this cause my roots lay flat so much and it gives the appearance that one side of my head is super curly and the other side of my head is kinda wavy, curls are slowly coming back to the wavy side but still looks crazy for now till it decides to fully curl back up

Nikki Shafer: We need to see another week in the life of curls, vlog style!! Those are so helpful & entertaining!

Tahinee Sanchez: Thank you for the help! My hair is long and the struggle is real! Mell have you ever tried using flaxseed gel on your hair?

Julie Gaillard: Thank you for this perfectly timed video!! All of your tips are great and lovin all of that volume!!

Tiffany Bartholomew: Love love love texture Tuesday! I liked the tips and I’ve been parting my sections horizontally lately and it better for volume. The best thing I’ve done for volume is a loose pineapple under my bonnet.

Tanairi Mastarreno: Omg I totally needed this video! I have absolutely no volume on my hair and didn't know what 2 do! Your hair looks so healthy! thanks for this video!

Christina: Ooh! So many great tips! I just emptied an AG Curl Fresh Definer (love it) so I will have to order more plus the Plastique to try. Can’t wait to try these tips! PS You look so pretty in the dress with the chain!

JoAnne Hutt: Love Texture Tuesday so freakin much!!! Great informational video as always!! Love the brown color on you as well!! It brightens your face even more!! Ciao Bella!

Charlene Bonner: Thank you so much for showing me how to do my curls. I always straightened my hair cause I did not know how to do the curls

Lisa Tulak: Dearest Mell, love this video especially the part about helping to eliminate established parts. Will this technique also help with the “back of the head” part resulting from cowlick’s or am I doomed to worrying about what the back of my head looks like when I can’t see it ‍♀️

Heather Lowrance: Mell, could you do more videos on wavy hair? My hair is 1c/ loose 2a waves but I see potential in it. I have a few pieces that are a tighter wave and I think when I find the right products I can get better hair that makes it past 1 day before going straight. I love watching your videos though!

Karyn not Karen: Love your videos, you are so fun! And your hair looks gorgeous

Madeline Franklin: I have wavy hair on the finer side but also have a lot of it so I struggle to get the volume I want… I recently tried It’s a 10 miracle volumizing shine treatment and it’s done wonders! The Aveda tonic is also a must have in my routine after I tried it per Mell’a recommendation on the channel :)

Vivian Mourad: just started watching, can't wait to see what i can use on my fine/medium wavy hair!!

bruh: thank youu ... I have the exact same curl pattern as you but my problem is that my hair gets so defined and in tight big clamps and I separate them but after an hour my curls clamp again together and that ways down my hair and I have no volume at all , I'd tried many methods but nothing helped... what should I do?

Ari Jay: My biggest struggle area = volume. Thanks @manes by Mell! Hi btw to you and Amanda

AV: Please do a curly hair routine using only vegan and cruelty free products!

AJ: I’d love your thoughts on blow dryer bonnets! I’ve been using one and it’s been a GAME CHANGER, it lets me do other stuff while my low-porosity hair dries (otherwise I’m holding a blow dryer for 45 minutes) and gives me insane bounce. They’re also suuuuuper affordable on Amazon. you couldn’t use it with your dyson, though. :/ But I’d still love to know your thoughts!

Rnt93: Your hair has been looking so luscious since you got rid of the highlights

Anne Josephine: So excited to watch!! Love all of your vids, literally look forward to your vids every week

LexT Sings: Do you have any tips for hair that tends to fall flat or become softer and looser around day 3?

Lyzette Vega: I'm obsessed with this routine

Raleigh Bowker: I am one of those lucky souls, whom the Spirits of the Big Hair have blessed REPEATEDLY with naturally BIG BOUFFY HAIR...and a LOT of it. I am going to try some of these, just to see how big I can truly get my hair... Bringing back the 80's but without the crunch! LOL!

Finding Normal : Love you!! Your new color is stunning. It is a very complimentalry, natural-looking, texture showing color. Excellent choice.

misspanama91: Hi Mel! I hope you see this! Can you please do more vids on maintaining the curls?! I’ve got down day 1 but day 2 and on is the unknown lol

Andrea Foster: Love ur hair and thank you so much for the tips my hair looks amazing

Haley: WOOP!! I love Tuesdays now. Thanks for the tips Mell! I'm always after that big hair look. You know like the lady at the movies you get mad at bc you can't see the screen?? Yep, that's me! Umm, I do like that colorful towel you had on. Hmmm, new Perfect Hair towel maybe???

Kathy Sahori: You mentioned that if the hair feels silky and already falls then to not use oil to scrunch the cast - but does this only apply for the volume routine or do you mean always never use an oil then ? the bigger the hair

Lava Aljaqmaqchi: Hi!!! Your hair is so beautiful ♥️ I have a question, what’s a reason curls get looser without even using heat? It got loose and I’m using bond treatments to see if it helps, I also have very very frizzy and dry root hair. Any tips would be very appreciated!! ♥️♥️

mvazquez367: Your hair looks so beautiful and healthy.

That's Chaos, Baby: Question about the diffusing scrunched up hair! Mell, I think you've said it can kinda disrupt the cuticle because the air is going against the grain of the cuticle, right? So will this not also cause a good amount of frizz? I know frizz is par for the course with curly hair, and we also sacrifice frizz for volume, but I just wanted to know if that will increase frizz

Pamela Heydenrych: So I LOVE LOVE your videos! However, I live in South Africa and products available for my budget as a single mom are limited (at best)... I really hope Amazon launching here next year will help If not, any chance you can do an internationally (affordable) range of videos?

Daniella Ayala: I never thought to backcomb with the pick! I’m going to try it asap

Dante Velasquez: Jam packed with excellent advice!

Toni Maffeo: Thank you so much I just learned a bunch of “ stuff” your hair is unbelievable just gorgeous you inspired me to cut some of the bottom off . I don’t want to , but it’s stringy and not curly like the rest of my hair . God only knows when the last time I got a trim I was afraid that if I cut it it would look like an Afro . I can’t wait to try the claw clips And the oil I def need oil in my hair I think it’s really damaged .

Chris: Hi Mell, Could you show how to get your haircut? It’s so cute!

hotlolowolf: Thanks so much! I loooved this video! Soo helpful!

Alicia: Love this, needed this. Thank you

sunflower: Hi Mell! My hair looks so dull, even if i apply oil, it just looks dull the next day. Can u pls teach me about hair glaze and is it safe?

jk: I always clip up my hair in a banana clip and always have BIG hair. I never understood that root clipping trend with small alligator clips when banana clips are right there, and the best non damaging alternative to hair ties

SioLazer: I keep breaking my little combs... like the ones you use under your bonnet in the chapter about keeping the crown from going flat. Are you using Scunci or Goody? I think mine are Scunci. I hear them crack when they go in my hair and then when I pull them out they've snagged hair...

Viridiana Avila: Beautiful video, lots of helpful tips.

Emma Mendez: OMG thank you that you thank you for the hair clip tips!!! I always have flat hair at the crown

Sandra Medina: Have you tried rizos curls products ? I would love to see a product review by my mane girl Mel. I tried the conditioner and think It was a bit too oily for my hair.

Theresa Milstein: This was really helpful. Did you ever use Aveda's volumizer? Does this mean you prefer their thickener? Speaking of volume, would you try the Lus gel to see if that has better hold and still keeps volume?

Junior Chaves o Picasso de Yahushua: 3:35 To me, you are the most beautifully perfect and beautiful woman in the universe. Your beauty never fails to astound me!!

Guissepina Buttigieg: I love watching your videos.. I put a hair comb in my hair every night... I've being do this for years... Its comfortable when you go to sleep... Also l have been doing the claw clips for years to.. I get alot of volume in the roots of my hair.... I love to watch you . You make me laugh... From Australia down under... Ciao
