Hi guys welcome back to my channel today's video we're going to be talking all about hair and it's going to be about protective styles. How i retain the most length with my protective styles, how i get the most growth out of it and how i prevent or decrease the amount of shedding and breakage i have during the takedown. So if you have been struggling with really gaining length, when you have in a protective style, then this video is for you before we get into that. I do want to say. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you to everyone, who's been watching liking and subscribing. I see you guys, i really appreciate you guys if you haven't already subscribed and you are on a healthy journey, healthy body, healthy hair. This channel is, for you, hit the subscribe button below and join the family. Thank you so much again. Okay, so we're gon na get right into the video okay. So we're going to start by saying what is a protective style. A protective style is anything that you put your hair in just to protect it, to give it a rest, so braids weaves twist anything like that. That'S just going to allow your hair to have a breather, allow you to retain length and to have your hair grow without any impedance. Now the first thing when it comes to protective styles, that you should question is whether or not it's for you at this time. Right so who should have a protective style in if your hair is breaking, then you may want to consider putting a protective style in just to kind of prevent further breakage and to give your hair a rest if you're having excessive thinning, you may want to hold Off on the protective styles, because the protective styles put a lot of tension on the scalp and it can exacerbate the situation, so breakage yes, thinning. No, also, if you just want to give your hair a rest you're on a journey, you want to see increased length. Then protective styles are for you, a lot of you guys have been asking. How long should i keep in my protective styles, and i said in one of my videos, i'll link it below. I give you a whole detailed explanation, but i feel like three months is a minimum for protective styles, and that is because, if you have it in less than that, it really defeats the purpose. You'Re not going to see the growth that you want to see because you haven't given it enough time. If it's less than three months, it's not a protective style, it's just a style. What is the maximum amount of time that you should have a protective style in, and that really just depends on you, but i wouldn't really recommend going past six months. I have gone to six months and i've had no trouble as long as you know. What to do when you're, taking down your protective style, my little guys are upstairs longer than six months. You may run into some problems with detangling, and so, unless you're really really good and really really patient. When it comes to removing that buildup and taking down that protective style properly, i would not recommend it okay. So how should you prep your hair when you are getting ready to put in a protective style? And really it's very, very simple: all you have to do is wash your hair and keep the oils that you put in it to a minimum when you're going to get fresh, braids or even a sew-in, your stylist is going to want clean, not too greasy or Oily hair makes it easier to maneuver the hair to braid, and so you really want to just wash your hair and moisturize it with a cream moisturizer and keep the oils to a minimum. They may even request that you re-wash your hair while you're there. If it's too oily now, how do you maintain your protective style during the three month minimum that you have it in again, it's super simple. I wash my hair when i feel i need it when i see build up in my scalp, so sometimes it's three weeks, sometimes it's a little longer. It really just depends on what's happening in my actual scalp, so i will wash my hair at the root and i don't deep condition. I don't even really use conditioner because i don't want it to be left behind in the rinse out process and then that adds to the build up that you have to remove later on. So i really just wash my scalp and then rinse and let water run over my protective style. If you have in a weave, you can go to a hair, stylist they'll wash your scalp they may put in conditioner. You can request that they don't. If you choose to and then they will style it accordingly or you can style it yourself, it's just ease and convenience. Whatever works for you now i get asked a lot of times. Should i oil my scalp when i have in a protective style and for me the answer to that is? Yes, people are concerned about the increased level of buildup when you're putting oils in your scalp every day or, however often, but for me my skin gets very irritated, sometimes itchy. When i have in protective styles and the oils that i use. I use a hair oil called onlay and it really helps to soothe my scalp as well as keep my skin my scalp conditioned for when i take it out. You also want to be taking that oil down on the. If you have braids, especially down onto the actual hair strands, if you can with weaves it's a little bit more difficult, but just do your best. Also, if you are putting in let's say a weave as a protective style, try to leave out the minimal amount of your hair as possible. If you can leave out none and do a full head closure kind of situation, then do that, because the less hair that you have out the less manipulating you have to do to that hair, the more your hair grows and is protected. Okay, so we're leaving out our middle sections, we're bumping it to blending with the weave and that hair is being put under heat damage. It'S just really put through the ringer in order to blend. So it's better to have it a full head weave. If you can and just close it all up, protect your whole head of hair now. Finally, finally, finally, we're going to be talking about the takedown, so when you are taking out your protective style, you want to use an oil based product. I mentioned a very good product, the head and shoulders. I think it's the pre-shampoo build up remover. I mentioned it in my products, video which i'll also have linked below, but it just dissolves that buildup, if you don't want to use that you can use like. I said an oil-based coconut oil and just really saturate that buildup with that oil and then just work it down break it up with your finger, work it down and then use a comb to kind of tease it out. You do not want to comb too viciously and pull and tug and rip your hair, because this is how people lose that length that they just gained. They break the ends of their hair out when they are removing that buildup. That buildup is what causes the breakage. So use something with oil really take your time to detangle. If you have a weave in you want to saturate your whole head with oil, you cannot do what you can do with braids strand by strand, but you can soak your head in oil and slowly work that build up out. I see people skip this all the time and this is how your hair kind of gets stuck at one length, and you don't retain that length. Protective styles are amazing for growing hair. If you use them right, we are losing the length because we're not taking it down properly. You really need something to remove that build up, and if you haven't braids twists or anything where it's section by section, you should be detangling each section i had my hair broken out so badly with the protective style, because i thought i could just wash it and Detangle in the shower, my hair became so matted. I had to have my mother and my sister help me to detangle it with my own lace, braid, okay and it just. I still ended up losing so much hair because that's the wrong thing to do. You have to remove that buildup first and the last thing when you take out that protective style, you want to do a nice, deep conditioning, something that is super moisturizing. I have a mask that i use after i take out my protective styles. I did a whole video on it. I will include the link to that as well below and but any deep conditioning that provides moisture back to your hair is what you need. You want to sit under the dryer for at least 20 to 30 minutes to bring the moisture back into your hair after you have done a protective style just to get it ready to be handled and manipulated again so guys. I hope that helps. I hope you learned how to take down and care for your protective style appropriately. If you didn't know before, if you have any questions put them in the comments, i answer every question. I might not get to it right away, but i do get to them. So just comment and again i hope you like this video and subscribe. Thank you so much for watching

Tara Lion: Protective styles are great for hair growth but they must be done right. Word of caution, most protective styles WILL devastate your ends, depending on how exposed they are so make sure you get a good trim before and afterwards. That’s why I’m taking a break from protective styles for the next 6 months so that I can nurture and gradually cut off my ends. My hair has still grown significantly, but I know it won’t grow longer with my ends like this. Healthy ends are essential for hair growth. And I personally disagree with the 3-6month timeframe for protective styles. In my opinion, 4 weeks is the minimum and 3 months is the max but this may just be my hair.

Queen Diane: Beautiful hair !!! I'm not relaxed but I think these tips are great for non relaxed hair too. Also that peach color really suit you.

Alexis H.: Wow! I wish I could go that long . My super coarse hair starts to matt at the 3 month mark ‍♀️ lol Great tips

Madame Toure - The Pink Pearls Glam Parlour: I use crochet to protect my relaxed hair cause I seriously got tired of box braiding in both small and mid size box braids myself. I go 3 to 4 months but the itching gets the best of me. I doubt I could make it to 6. I do agree oil should be kept to a minimum. Tfs with us. Thumbs up

shernet brown: Your makeup is flawless, looks so natural

Shamicka White: I wear my protective styles for 3 months, it allows my hair to grow like weeds... great advice!

Faith Ogumka: Great video! I have a question for you: after the take down, what is the best routine to do a relaxer touchup? Immediately or after deep conditioning?

Lyn: 3-6 months, most people don't take care of their hair in a "protective style". That length of time will cause more harm than good for most people.

Born2Worship: Hello Miss. I’m new to stretching & protective styles. Currently, I have butterfly locs installed & have had them for 1 week; however, I am 8 weeks post relaxer. What is your advice? Should I try to stretch my protective style to 3 months still? This is my first time stretching so how would I be able to tell if breakage is occurring within the protective style since my hair is put up.

Hair & Healing: I can only do up to a month with protective styles. My hair loves water. Also, protective styles helps me keep my hands out my hair. It's really an issue for me so that's my reason for PS.

SayItLoud: So... I didn't detangle well enough before washing my hair after 3.5 months of protective styling. It's taken me days to soften the mats and knots but I've also lost a ton of hair. I can already tell I'm going to have to cut off my relaxed part and start over. I'm so upset because I have a good 3 inches of new growth just wasted. Maybe it will look different once I'm able to relax the new growth, I don't know but right now I'm so upset with myself.

ASeeker: You are the epitome of natural beauty :)

E.B.S.: 6 months is too long for a protective style. Most people's hair is filthy and matted. And the take down takes hours and is damaging. 2-3 months will work.

Latoya Gassaway: Wow, I learned so much from this video. I think I now know what I am doing wrong. Thank you so much!!

Johanna Chifwaila: How long after relaxing your hair can you get knotless braids installed?

Chevelle Thomas: How do you manage to keep it in for 3 months? I can't go more than 2, I'm almost a month in right now and I have tons of new growth

Nicole Thompson: Hi, I had knotless box braids put in for the 1st time 4 days ago and I have moisturized and oiled my scalp everyday not knowing that I wasn't supposed to. What do you wash you scalp with when you have braids and when do you redo the braids to keep them for at least 3 months to retain length.

Y B: My hair is healthy and relaxed but fine and I wear crochet faux locs using the cornrow method. What has been the best protective style for you being relaxed. I usually keep mine in about 6 weeks which I see is not long enough.

Fo Cave: Just took my twists out and took yoyr advice on the head and shoulders....GIRL Lliteral lifesaver... best advice ever!!!

RelaxedWithDee: New subscriber here!! I’m loving your videos!! Keep them coming

Lucia Muasya: New subbie to your channel. I am learning a lot as I am on a hair journey. Thanks for sharing.

Seantra Jones: How long after a relaxer should you start protective style??

Insert Name Here: Classic beauty❤ thanks for the helpful tips

Zawadi Thelwell: you're a very feminine lady. Beautiful.

d2h: Love this! I need help!

Shawanda Saunders: Can I put in a protective style the day of or after my relax day?

Seantra Jones: Hey how long do you think you should wait in between protective style?

mya harper: I noticed someone said something about weave-in. What's your take on wigs? I have alopecia on my edges/sides. Im thinking something i dont have to wear all the time. no pressure on my sides.if that makes sense

Makeupswatch Fan: Nice tips thanks for sharing

Fredina: Hi. How long would you recommend leaving a weave in?

RitaMay June: Such a beauty! New subbie... looking forward to your channel

J A: I big chopped June 24th 2017.. shaved sides and all. fast forward 3 years and my hair is only at collar bone length. Am I doing something wrong that’s slowing down my Growth process? My hair is at an ok length but I feel like 3 years post big chop my hair should be some what longer then what is currently is. Please list some tips!!! ❤️

Keenya Newman: What’s a good protective style without braids? I can’t afford to do braids plus my hair breaks with braids!

Deborah Otisi: Very helpful

Lucy Jack: Can I use conditioners to take down the protective style and is 2 months enough

Chimenia Mexil: I'm going to practice your methods

Jasmine Mitchell: Hi tips for to grow hair past shoulder length.?

Melinda Magee: Crochet is my go to and I'll stick to them

Nany Gyan: For me 3 months is maximum because if it pass that I get headaches .

Royal Cyn Hair: On point.. for sure:)!

BelIcosta1: You're so beautiful! ❤️

Danie ツ: 3 months MINIMUM? hold on. Nah, a month is perfect lol. Some people really neglect their hair when it's styled and some are always in their hair when it's out. To me a protective style is just to keep my hands out my hair. I still wash and oil my scalp so it's going to frizz. I'm not walking around looking homeless because I'm not in the mood to at least take out and redo my hair every 4 weeks. Plus I don't wear wigs and weave. If I was, sure. With braids it's a pass.

jasmin shade: Hello i have weave in my hair , my hair dresser treated before putting in the hair. I want to know how I can wash it , is two months okay to keep I in? Can I wash I every 4 weeks ?

Lori Carter: Your wash process is it shampoo after you do pre shampoo, do u do a actual shampoo and then mask? Then Style as desired

Rebecca Owusu: If you are keep your hair for 3-6 month how should you keep it for that long

Rebecca Owusu: Please do a video on how you take care of your body

Makeda Nyahuma: Wowwww. I love your hair.

My 1st Love: Stop if your hair is breaking you need a protein treatment FIRST then a protective style

d2h: If you work out a lot? Should I go natural instead? I'm sick of constantly sweating out my hair

T Rawlins: Do you only get your hair washed at the salon?

Rebecca Owusu: That is cool

Rebecca Owusu: l just like your colour what body cream do u use

Songi: When she said 3months is the minimum.....I was like oooooooooookkkkkk

Sabrina Bee: If ur just gonna kill ur hair anyway with relaxers, why bother with growth?

MoonHoney Mami: You’re so beautiful

Jojo B: You're so pretty!

K C: H0w many times out the year do u wear protective styles
