This hair tutorial will show you how to cut your own hair in layers. This is great if you want to get rid of split ends that are dry and splayed. I used the ponytail technique to create shorter layers at the front of my face and longer layers at the back. I saw this method of cutting hair on Pinterest quite some time ago and I've been using it since (before this I was using the hair slithering technique to create layers). The result is a layered haircut in a soft V shape at the back. You can either use thinning scissors to soften the bluntness of the ends or your can use the point cutting technique which I showed you in the video. To do the point cutting technique, slide your fingers horizontally down your hair to flatten the tip of your hair and cut into your ends using the points of the scissors. Good luck!

♥ What you'll need:

Flat Iron

Hair Brush

Hair Ties

Hair Cutting Scissors

Thinning / Texturizing Scissors

Hey guys new here today, I'm going to show you how you can easily and quickly cut and layer your own hair at home. Now, if you're looking to cut your hair in a particular style that is vistacal to a hairstylist, but this method is great. If you want to get rid of some split ends, remove some lengths and add fresh layers to your hair. So if you want to learn how to do this and keep on watching, first you'll need a hair straightener, because your hair needs to be pin straight. So you can see where the layers are. You'Ll also need a hair brush for hair ties and haircutting scissors. So I have these ones that are very sharp and if you want, you can also get some thinning scissors that look like this. They basically have teeth on one end and a sharp blade on the other and I'll link. All these things in the video description below before you start cutting. You want to gather your hair into a high ponytail and tie it at the top of your head. Now, from my experience, I noticed that, where you position, the ponytail is quite important, because if you position it right at the top of your head near the front of your face like what I'm doing here, you're going to get more layers in the front and less At the back, so you keep more of your length, but if you move your ponytail closer to the back of your head, you're going to get more layers at the back grab, a second hair tie and tie it right where your chin is. This is just going to keep the hair all in place so that it remains the street and with the third hair tie, you want to tie it where you're going to cut it off. So since I'm going to get rid of some length today, I'm going to tie it or inches from the tip. You want to save an extra inch forward, the feathering part. So if you want to get rid of five inches of hair, tie your hair at four inches like what I'm doing here next grab a pair of scissors and just cut the ponytail off. As you can see, all the split ends are basically gone at this point. Since I got rid of them - and now you just have a blunt cut next, remove the hair tie and divide your hair into three equal sections. Depending on how thick your hair is, you might need to divide it into four sections because we're basically going to work with one section at a time after you divide your ponytail tie each of them separately so that they don't get mixed up in the following step. You want to stopped in the bluntness of each section by point. Cutting to do this. All you have to do is use your fingers as a guide and slide them horizontally down. Your hair then cut into the ends of your hair, using the points of the scissors, and so what this will do is it will soften the bluntness, and it also creates an even shrimp when that's done. I like to thin the ends out a bit more by using my thinning scissors, and basically this will just denote the ends and feather them out even more move on to the next section of hair and repeat so point cuts and then thin out the ends. Now, if you don't have those thinning scissors, no worries, you can just use the point cutting technique. All you have to do is point the ends of your scissors, bolster up to your hair and that will get rid of some of the thickness. If you want all your layers to look soft and feathered at the end, we want to point cut into your hair even higher than what I'm doing, and I did this last time. If you look at my before picture, the ends were very feathered and it was drying out a bit so this time, I'm just going to point cut it a bit so that it looks thicker and fuller. Finally, when all three sections are done, you want to remove the hair tie and check out to see if it's, even if you see some strands that are longer just grab your scissors and continue to point cut. If you can recall, the initial cut was really blunt. So now it's much softer and even now I'm going to show you how far I usually cut my hair. So if you still want long hair, just cut it right in the middle of your sternum, but if you want medium length, hair, just cut it right below your clavicle, which is about right over here. I think this method of cutting hair is pretty foolproof. So if you want to this experiment by cutting your hair a bit more, you can always release it to see if it's long or short and then you can always tie it up again and now the moment you've all been waiting for word to see. If I actually messed up her knot, so this is what my hair looks like after I let it down, and one of the reasons why I like this method, is that you end up with even layers at the front of your face. So if you can see here, all my layers are even but the only thing is I find that they're still a little bit too thick, maybe because I didn't point cut enough. So I'm just going to grab my thinning shears again and I'm just going to thin out the ends to give it a more feathered bridge when you thin out the ends of your layers with your thinning scissors. You want to point the scissors at an angle because that's the way the layers are falling and, as you can see, my layers start pretty low and I do that for a reason, because if your layers start too high and you do braids and things like that, The hair will stick out of the braid, so if you braid, your hair often is best to start your layers lower. And yes, I'm aware that I need to tone my hair and touch up my roots, but I'm critical right now, so I don't want to smell the chemicals. Here'S the completed. Look from the front and the back. I just added some soft layers and got rid of some length, so I hope you guys enjoyed this video if you did don't forget to give this video a thumbs up and if you ever give this a try, don't forget to show me your pictures on Instagram And Facebook thanks so much for watching and I'll talk to you later ciao

طبخاتي My Cooking: Amazing, first time I cut ✂️ my own hair alone and it came so perfect. Thank you very much

Julia_J: I've been cutting my hair with this video for 4 years and it comes out great everytime and saves me so much money. Thanks girl !

Emma L: Just tried this, my hair was just as long as hers. I've been struggling with tons of split ends and I HATE going to the hairdresser. This works fantastically!! I followed every step (including straightening my hair) and I ended up cutting off 5-6 inches and now I have soft, split end free hair ❤️ thank you!

Rachel Walters: After a failed attempt last night at trying to have my husband cut my hair, I tried following your tutorial. It was so unbelievably easy, and the result was as good as any cut I've received in a salon! Excited about all the money I will now save on cutting my own hair. Thank you so much! :-)

Catherine Zellmer: I have done this twice now since Covid started and I am in LOVE with my hair...like seriously better than any haircut I’ve gotten in a salon. May not work for everyone’s hair but I have completely different hair than OP and it turned out beautiful on me so happy she shared this! I have long thick wavy hair and cut it wet

frogskillkids: Since the first time I used this tutorial, I can't justify going to a hairdresser! I have long thick hair and love having longer layers but I suffer from split ends so this was perfect! Make sure to straighten your hair if it's thick and wavy!!

Devilsreject30: Tried this earlier today thinking I was going to completely botch my hair, but it turned out great!!! This is definitely the first hair hack I've ever seen, that actually works!

SongAngel: Did this the other day and it turned out awesome!! I have hair only a few inches shorter than hers and it’s been needing trimmed for a while. This method was quick and easy and came out better than the last professional heist but I had. Super pleased I used my fabric scissor and a pair of dog grooming shears (I cleaned them first haha)

Stephanie O'brien: Me and my mum just used this tutorial in lockdown for a well needed hair cut. Great results!!

Richelle VT: I just did this cut on myself today, it's very easy to do. I love it. Perfect layers. Thank you.

♡민정♡: I LOVE this tutorial. So simple. It was my first time cutting my own hair like, a lot, but it turned out beautifully. I didn’t straighten my hair but it turned out exactly like I wanted. I can see myself doing this regularly

Dara Snyder: I can't thank you enough for this wonderful instructional video! I am immunocompromised and have to take extra precautions during this pandemic. I found your video last night, watched it a few times, cut 4 inches off, and it was wonderful seeing my ends and layers even! My long hair looks so healthy! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!!

LadyTwice: Came across this video around 2am and immediately got out of bed and cut my hair lol it came out awesome thank you girl you saved me $70

Leyla A: I used this exact method on my long hair and it did a great job! The layers are not too much at all so you can't go wrong. The layers fell correctly in the front as well! Just make sure that you pull your hair closer to forward from the start. If you put the pony tail on the top of your head, you will get waayy more layers in the front. Just listen to the video and follow the instructions. The people that messed up seriously didn't listen to the instructions!

AM Jordan: Best tutorial I've seen for this yet. Simple, easy to follow & looks awesome. Thank you!

eeyespy Tran: Just cut my hair using this technique. Super easy. Love the long layers in the front.

Lovely Applewhyte: I have been using a similar technique to cut my hair for several years. While it worked really well, it cut my hair straight across. I’ve been missing my layers so I was super excited when I came across your video. I followed your instructions and my hair came out amazing! I have hair as long as yours and my layers are long and fall beautifully whether my hair is towards the front or back. I am SO excited! Thank you so very much for posting this simple but effective technique =)

Marlena Myles: I just followed this tutorial, spent more time straightening my hair than cutting it. And honestly, it's top 5 haircuts of my whole life. Thanks for the tutorial, so easy to do!

Paige Allen: That was awesome! Honestly, came out far more evenly layered than when I pay a hairdresser!! So good. Thank you xo

auccy: Recently been obsessed with the long v shaped hair look. Saw the good reviews in the comments and decided to try it on my long (cut straight across, no layers whatsoever) straight black hair. Followed the steps, brought my hair to the front of my head just like her. After the first cut (maybe about 4 inches - palms were so sweaty) it didn’t turn out like a v, maybe a very wide U shape and I imagine it’s because my hair was originally a straight cut. It was almost as if all the hair I cut off was only from the front of my hair. I did the cut again a few days later (2-3 inch) following the same instructions and it turned out nicer, a bit more of a v shape and I kept it like that. A few days ago I decided to do the cut again (maybe only 2-3 inch) and I’m obsessed with how it looks now!! It’s almost as if each cut carved it more and more into the v shape. I’ve kept a lot of my length using this method. I imagine it’s not the best hair style to prevent split ends but I’m happy with it. Also I have 0 experience cutting hair and no knowledge about hair. This method is very helpful!

Judy Calman: Like many, tried this because of coronavirus this morning. I never comment on stuff like this but it was so easy and it honestly worked perfectly. My hair is about 2/3's down my back, and I cut off about 5 inches this morning to get rid of all the dead ends. It looks awesome and I will definitely be doing this again even if coronavirus goes away. Thank you so much!!

Emily Oum: I have viewed this video so many times and the last two I’ve watched since quarantine. I’ve cut my own hair twice now, still looking good. Thanks for the video. I can always count on you. ❤️

Tardy Tortellini : For everyone skeptical about this method, let me tell you what happened. I was so freaking terrified. I almost cried when I made the first cut. I was so scared to let my hair down to look at it when I was done. But when I took the hair tie out, I flipped my hair back and looked in the mirror, OH MY GOD IT LOOKED PERFECT. I guarantee anyone can do this. This is coming from someone who is terrible at doing anything with their hair. If I can do it, you absolutely can. This works! Honestly the worst part is going to be cleaning up your bathroom afterwards.

Nala Shore: Love it! It really works plus it’s fast and easy, no sore arms!

Maxine B.: Haven't had a haircut in 1.5 yrs. I usually get one before Mother's day. Was really tired of my long hair so I Googled and found this video. Right after watching, I followed the steps and was done in less than 10 minutes. And wow, it looked better than some of the salon cuts I have had before where the hairdresser didn't really get how I wanted my hairstyle to look! Unbelievably easy, thank you!!!

Gio Chin: I never comment on YouTube, but this video deserves it... I just followed your instructions and my hair looks AMAZING! It's long and straight just like yours (I chose to follow a video that had a hair like mine) and it looks awesome now. I was always afraid of having my hair cut, I've been cutting at the same saloon for years because it was the only one I trusted but I always felt bad for spending so much on a haircut. Now I can cut it for free and decided I'm gonna donate the money instead :) Thanks for this tutorial! And if you're watching this and still afraid of trying, just go for it, it works!

Kaylee jade: Literally used this just now. Worked really well and was really easy. Thank you!

Amberyne Ahmadzai: I literally did this at home during quarantine and it worked so well.

Heather Hicks: Best tutorial I’ve came across so far. Followed your steps exactly and couldn’t be happier with the results

Dee Dee: Super easy and my hair came out perfectly! My hair was longer than hers and I cut it to the same length she had. Thanks!!!

Katrina Blackwolf: Oh yay! I used this video a couple years ago and now here I am again using this video to trim my long hair again Love this method! It is full proof, totally recommend for long hair

Kirsten Svenson: This is a great video! I usually end up waiting 36 months between haircuts because it feels like a money drain... now I can do it on my own! When I tried it, the layers definitely ended up being more dramatic than I anticipated, so I might move my ponytail back a bit on my head next time. Thanks for the clear directions and great idea!

AJ J.: Thank you! I knew there had to be a simple way to get a decent looking trim on my hair right now - this worked perfect, and was super simple! My hair looks MUCH better!

Jamie Bernard: It's great! This technique keeps everything even, promise! Like she said, pretty hard to mess up. Only thing I'd do differently is get much sharper scissors. It was difficult to cut, so I had to go back and over a lot. Also the bottom-most layer stayed quite long so I sectioned off just the bottom half of my hair, measure how much more I wanted off, then brought over my head to cut like she did. That turned out awesome for me, but it gets tricky the shorter your hair.

Ju-Ju McFluff: Thanks, it turned out great :) My hair is super long and thick so the hardest part was brushing it out well enough for a sturdy ponytail in the front (took at least 30m, seriously. My neck hurt lol). But after that, everything went pretty smoothly :) And I cut a LOT. 16 inches. 10/10 method

Sumiko Chadwell: My hair just came out flawless. Amazing and so grateful to have used this tutorial!!!

Hameet Kaur: Just tried and have to say I am amazed with my perfectly layered hair. Never going back to salon for a layered hair cut. Love this <3

Luisa Lulucm: My hair looks absolutely gorgeous thanks to you!!! It was so easy to follow and your voice is so soothing lol. Thank you so much

Rayne Storm Marie: I couldn’t thank you enough for this video. Never in my life have I ever tried to cut my own hair but I tried to after seeing this one and this is the happiest I have EVER been with my hair. I’m truly amazed and just thank you so so much for sharing this

Miscellanium: Thank you so much for making this video. I’ve been desperately wanting to cut my hair as it is long/decently thick and a bit much to deal with the summer heat, but I just don’t have the funds to go see my hair stylist right now. I followed your tutorial and it worked perfectly! Thank you so much!!

Michele Sheppard: Came across this at 2:22am and had to try it! My hair was past my butt and getting extremely heavy.. came out AMAZING!! Thank you so much!❤️

angie chavez: Such a great video! Tried this at home out of frustration of the length and dead ends. Walked through step by step like the video and my hair came out amazing! Try it!!!

Linda Gomes: Did this today and honestly the results were everything. 10/10 would recommend! Thank you lovely lady for making this tutorial

Solitary_ Dragon: I’ve been cutting my own hair for the last couple of years all thanks to this tutorial ❤️❤️

didiibear: This is unbelievable. THANK YOU SO MUCH. If you're afraid to try this like i was.. don't be. Follow her steps exactly, make sure you know the length you want to cut and it'll turn out perfect. I CANT THANK YOU ENOUGH!!!!

Xiaobai Li: I have thin hair with medium length (armpit length) and it still worked great!!! This is the third cut your own hair video I followed since pandemic, and it’s hands down the best one. Just wanted to say thank you!

Relena Reid: I stood up immediately while watching this, grabbed my scissors, comb and ties. Thank goodness for this!!! ♥️ I was actually planning to have my hair cut this week!

Alckemy Neuro: I just did this and am very happy with the result! I didn’t do the layer section (just the initial cut) but my hair looks super healthy

Swanee Falk: I just tried this and was absolutely shook!! I cut five inches off the ponytail and was bracing myself for short hair, but when I took out the ponytail my jaw dropped at how well this method maintains length!! My hair looks basically the same as before but it feels so much healthier!

Melissa Duvall: So I just did this, and let me tell you, it looks SO FREAKING CUTE!!!! It's also completely even all the way around. Just know that if you do the pony tail close to your forehead like she does, the look is very layered around your face and does not take a lot off of the length. My bangs are easily 4 inches shorter than they were before and I believe only about an inch was taken off of the back. I've been wanting to learn how to cut my own hair for a while though because I think it is ridiculous to pay $20, which is what the salons around me usually charge. As a college student who is not working, I need to budget every penny. I'm so glad Bebexo made this video because my hair feels so refreshed and it was free! Thank you!!! <3

Steph: Did it this morning and it worked great! Took off about five inches and my hair looks so much healthier. Thank you.

Aisha: I discovered this videos years ago and been cutting my hair like this for years now, thank you so much! Great technique to get rid rid of split ends

theHaileyJones.com: I just gave it a try after watching it about ten times throughout corona chaos. I have really thick straight hair—- and it didn’t come out bad— but definitely not great. Because ny hair is so thick, the first cut was not blunt— it was angled. And then everything after that was a little crazy. The cut looks fine but it definitely messes up my braids for the time being. But my hair is long and it’ll grow so— trued something new and will visit karen if salons every open again. Luckily I’m not dating anyone during these times so feeling weird about my hair has no relevance to my attracting a mate.

mars aben: Just took 3-4in off! Thank you for sharing this video, it was so easy to follow and I ended up with great results! I love the soft layers it creates in the front!

Leah Marie: I’ve been cutting my own hair for years in just a straight blunt way because I had no clue how to do it more “styled” but I came across this and absolutely love the results!

Nani Mesaku: I did it!! It's by no means perfect bc this is the first time I cut my own hair but it turned out cut and suits my wavy hair really well. Thank you for this video.

Sara Johnson: Came during quarantine but from now on I will cut my own hair because this was really easy to do and I love the way my hair turned out! I love it more than when I go to the salon!!! Thanks so much for this video!

Camille Howlett: I just followed this and it worked really well! I had to do more fixing up at the end to make my layers flow better but 100% will do this again. Thank you!

Melissa Evers: This was successful for me! My hair was about the same length as hers and I found the front layers a little harsh, but I have no idea how to blend and I just did my best. I bet no one will even think the front is bad. I’m just a perfectionist ‍♀️

Amanda Maynard: Thank you so much for making this video!! I need to follow directions even when I know how to do something, and you’ve helped me with so many hair cuts since I found this!

Bridget Messick: Came across this about 2 years or so ago. My daughter needed a hair cut something terrible (she was 6 or 7 at the time) hair down past her butt, screamed she wanted to keep her length. I tried this video out and it cane out AMAZING!!!! Kept her length, gave layers and shape. Been doing it ever since, no money wasted at the cuttery. Just did my own hair today finally and it looks great. Thanks for the video!!!

Ana Valencia: I’ve used this method on myself and just did it on my daughter , hair came out quite good both times . Thanks !

aslynnrose: Just tried this. Worked like a charm. I went to beauty school but was always afraid to cut my own hair. This gave me a beautiful face frame and it was easy to control how much I took off! Thank you!!

M N: It just worked amazing for me!! Now my hair is nice and smooth without damaged/split ends. Thank you so so much!!

s s: You saved me lol I followed some other tutorial and it looked so choppy. I have very long hair so I got worried I messed up and would have to cut alot more off than I wanted. Your tutorial made my hair look so soft and flowy. Thank-you!

David Nichols: I appreciate you doing this video for all of us. I’ve been scared to cut my own hair for awhile, I did it this way after watching this video and will probably do it again to take more off, I cut about 8 inches to start, probably do another 8. Thank you

Crystal Platke: Thank you so much for this video girl!!!! My hair looks amazing!!!!!! I always 100’s of $$ to get my hair done (my hair is waste length and dyed ash blonde, and my hair is medium brown naturally) Since Covid I’ve been doing my own hair and my hair cuts have been stick straight and choppy. Today I feel like a movie star!!! I love u girl!!! 5 stars!!!

Roch Elle: amazing! i tried this on my hair and i absolutely love the results. after not having a haircut since March, my hair feels much healthier. and the layers are perfect. what a relief! thank you so much❣️

Nikki Sjoblom: I could have cut more, but I was being cautious. This was wonderful! The cut looks professional and took me less than 10 minutes, instead of the hour!

06walsh: Just did this and it works! My hair wasn't as long as yours so I was worried but totally worked! Thank you!

The Cheeky Copywriter: I used your technique and my hair came out amazing!!!! I just love it thank you for showing me how easy it can be to cut your own hair ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Leah Leyva: I've literally been going back to this video for the last two years to cut my hair. Any time I've asked a hairdresser to do this exact style for me they cut like 7 freaking inches off, so I had to figure out how to do it on my own. THANKS FOR SAVING ME AND MY LONG HAIR. <3

adamantiumkook: I just did this now and it came out amazing! Been wanting to cut my hair for a while but DIY haircuts usually seemed either too complicated or came out looking too one-length. This was really simple and looks really good :) will definitely do this again

jennie roberts: Totally just did this! And yeah it works. Week 5 or is it 6? into lockdown here in NZ and we have just come down to level 3, so still no hair salons open. Thought I would bite the bullet and just go for it! It works great and it didn't take long and there was hardly any mess. Thanks so much Bebexo.‍♀️❤

Meghan Dvorak: Woah, this really worked. My hair is the same length as yours and it came out beautifully. Thanks!

amy rockey: I actually just used this technique with the same type of scissors and it worked GREAT!!❤️

Sarkirat Mann: Ive never come across such a well explained tutorial! Thank you❤️ I’ll most probably be cutting my own hair tomorrow following this pray for me

Janell Callahan: This is fabulous! Thank you! I did it and took off about 6 inches and it looks great!!

Krishma S: Thank you for this video! I've always been afraid to cut my hair but gave this a shot and it worked perfectly!

Krista Kong: Oh my gosh this totally worked! I'm 56 have long straight hair and I'm NEVER paying for a hair cut again you are amazing!!! I did a great job thanks to you :)

anuja thakur: Came across this video and worked wonderfully for me . Very explanatory and simplified. Thanks

crabbypanda: Just did it. Never have I trimmed my hair other than bangs or buzz clipping when it was short. It was past my waist. Now it's 4 inches shorter, nice layered ends and looks great!!! Yay!!

LuiseGee: Hey, so I just cut my long hair using this method and it worked really well! - thanks for the video! X

pepperfanhp: I tried this as this was the easiest method for a beginner! My hair came out great! I did have to separate my hair into five sections instead of the three as I have thick hair and I did this while wet as my hair is/was so long it won't stay straight if dried and wet was way easier for me to manage. Thank you so much!

Andrea McKinney: This is THE best hair tutorial! I’ve been cutting my hair since I was 16 and have tried so many methods. Usually they take forever and involve trying to look at the back of your head. I found this a couple of years ago and now it’s the only way I cut my hair. Just did it again and it always looks great!

Angel Bogart: This worked for me really well!! I'm a forty-something & haven't had a hair cut for years. Decided to go for it & I love it!! Thank you✌

HE Lamb: I did this months ago, and was very pleased. I'm going to do it again today. Thank you for a very useful video!

Living Quite Simply: Thank you so much! My ends were so dead, and now they’re gone! I love how it turned out. Your video is a lifesaver for women wanting to save some money and still have their hair looking nice.

X X: Just tried this. At first didn't think it was going to work but it did! Helped remove my split ends and get my layers even easily.

Kate Boyle: I'm never going to get my hair cut again. This turned out so well! I was so nervous doing it but I love it!! Thank you!!

Herberts: My mum has been cutting my hair like this since I was a toddler, I'm 21 now and do it for myself and still love it

Yolanda Morphakis: I just tried this as I haven't been able to get a haircut in 3 months...works so well and very easy! xx

theNary: My haircut came out perfect. Thank gorgeous for this amazing tutorial.

Marlisse Torres: I love this method, my hair looks just as I wanted! and now it feels super soft without those horrible split and dry ends, thanks!

Vyacheslav Braskov: Thank you, this worked way too well for a YouTube video! I can guarantee it even works for medium sized hair, you just need a little help with the point cuts in that case. It was easy, quick and nice! Love it, thank you!
