Braided Ribbon Updo With No Hair Pins ⊰ Historical Hairstyle ⊱ For Long Hair ⊰ Hungarian Folklore ⊱

A History and Folklore infused tutorial, of a braided wreath hairstyle for long hair, held up by only some ribbon!

My instagram: https://www.instagram.com/prettyshephe...

This kind of hairstyle was worn in many villages throughout Hungary in the 19th up until the mid-20th century, when some of the photos I present were taken. It keeps all of your hair up and out of the way when work needs to be done. Because of this, many girls wore this (and other similar styles) on an everyday basis.

If you've tried this hairstyle in your own everyday life (or as part of a historical/traditional costume) let me know how it turned out!

Hello, this is Anna from British shepherd and today I'm going to show you a historical hairstyle from Hungarian folk culture. Originally, this hairstyle is a traditional way for women to have worn their hair during work, and it was a hairstyle worn, mostly by unmarried maidens. There are various examples of it through various regions and villages. I'M sure this hairstyle appears in the folk culture of other European countries as well, not really comment below, and let me know if you have similar styles in your own countries, folk culture. I really think that its hairstyle that one can use in day-to-day life as well, so I really thought it would be valuable for you to learn how to make it. This is a wreath hairstyle that requires absolutely no pins to hold it only some ribbon. This is a fairly easy hairstyle to make. If you're able to part your hair, pull it in a ponytail braid it and tie a bow, then you can do it for sure. I'Ve tied my hair into a sleek ponytail in the back. I don't have an exact measurement of how much ribbon you're going to need, but I can tell you how I approximate it to my own hair and you can do the same with yours. You'Re, going to take the end of your ribbon. Put it next to your elastic, pull down and measure the length of your hair hold on right there on the remaining side, you're going to measure around your head, we're going to pull down to have double that amount, and that's approximately the length of rhythm that you're Going to need, if you want the bow at the back to have bigger loops, then I would suggest to leave more rhythm to this, but I just want a tiny little bow. We'Re going to separate this ponytail into two house. Take one of your ribbons find the middle point, which is here tuck this through the elastic to have two lengths of the same size, we're going to part this hair into three sections, adding two of the ribbons into two strands, whichever ones you prefer from here. You'Re. Just going to do a simple English braid, the only thing that you should pay attention to is to make sure that the ribbons are facing the same side of the braid. As you can see, there are no ribbons visible on the underside, because the side, that's more decorated, will be facing outwards. Should you get to the point where the strand with no ribbon runs out, then you can cheat a little by just adding some of the hair from the strands with the ribbons in them and then continue the braid with one strand of hair and then two strands Of ribbon, when you've reached the end of the hair, where you can't really grade any longer, then you can just tie a very gentle knot onto the ribbon without putting too much tension on the little ends of your hair. Not to do the same. On the other side find the middle pull through and break now that we have both of our braids, we can create the crown or wreath hairstyle, just lay it flat on your head cross. It quite close to the front of your head now. Here is where you have to pull very hard and make sure that the braids kind of sit very tight on top of each other, because this is what is going to hold the pinless hairstyle after you've done that you can pull the braids back cross and to The front again since the end of the braids are very colorful and decorative. I like to use them more as accent braids, so I'm more careful as to how I place them, making sure that they go kind of in between the two braids that I have. Then I only need to tie the ends in a bowl. This is the finished. Look. I will be honest. This hairstyle does require a little bit of practice and a couple of tries in the first run for sure, because you have to get the hang of how tight you have to pull these together, so they sit on top of each other. Now, if you feel a little bit unsecure with the stability of this hairstyle, you can add as many hair pins as you like. It goes without saying that if you have shorter hair, you can just do the same, that I did as long as your hair is long enough for one of the braids to reach a little bit over the Midway parting, because in that case you can tuck the Ends of the braids underneath one another, so you can cover it up and still make it look like a full wreath if you feel like this amount of decoration, isn't quite colorful enough for you. I encourage you to try adding more than one color of ribbon and you can actually also add multiple ribbons more than two. You could add one for each strand of hair that you have at the same time, if you only happen to have one piece of ribbon, that's long enough for this hairstyle, you can still create it by using one half of it in each of the braids, and Then doing the same thing all over again and tying the end at the back just exactly the same way as I did with the two ribbons on my hair and if you would like to further accessorize this look, the more traditional style of accessorizing would be a Hair comb, it's very easy to use. You just add it above your ponytail, nice and snug alternately. You can also add more modern accessories, such as flowers, more flowers. Kyriea: USA Commenter here! I worked at a Renaissance Festival this past summer as a fictional Hungarian Countess's Daughter, and your videos were SO HELPFUL in getting the hair right! <33 Granted, I cheated and used fake hair to make the braids, as my own hair doesn't even reach my collarbones, but the techniques you present worked beautifully! Thank you Thank you THANK YOU!

Ursule M: Im Lithuanian and we actually do have hairstyles like that . My mother used to wear it when she was younger my family still has pictures of her with it Edit: Where did you learn all of the hairstyles?

Lyoness: This is absolutely the BEST way to make milk maid braids!!! I am so excited to finally have found a wonderful way to wear my hair! I've been skipping the ribbon and using bobby pins instead, and it looks fantastic! Thank you so much for posting this tutorial. I now have a super easy wreath/milk maid hairstyle for every day.

E.T. B.: I love this hairstyle so much! And please do more hairstyles! I have thick kneelength hair and need to find good ways to corral it on top of my head. If I don't, it gets stuck in everything and people next to me on the couch sit on it. And as for traditional hairstyles, I am part Armenian, and most Armenian hairstyles are just long, decorated braids, or buns at the nape of the neck. The traditional headwear often includes a hat and veil for women, so wearing hair in a wreath doesn't really work underneath that. I, however, don't wear a hat very often, and I find wreaths to be more secure and less prone to getting dipped in soup/stuck on door and cupboard handles/sat on than long braids, so I wear them much more often.

TheDancingmamabear: I found your channel recently. I love your sense of humour and I love that you're giving me so many different, doable long hair styles. My hair has been long and very short many times over. It is a little past my waist now and I love my long hair, you know why? It's less time consuming than short hair, especially with wavy, curly thick hair. I only brush my hair when I wash it with a wide toothed comb in the shower or I lose my locks. I usually tie it in a knot, if I don't have a hair tie or throw it into a quick bun, but it gets old. I've already tried one of your tutorials and will more! Thank you and yes I subscribed

Erin Jones: I have very long hair (past my waist) and your videos have been a LIFESAVER in how to style it in ways that don't pull on my head or swing around while I'm working! I will have to try this ribbon hairstyle - I have been practicing your crown braid hairstyle and have slowly but surely been getting better at it! Thank you so much for making these videos - the historical focus, easy instructions and overall wonderful atmosphere makes these a treasure!

sherrysicle: this is the cutest hairstyle!! edit, i got to the last part & here’s my essay: it’s so simple yet complicated (ok this doesn’t make sense) like you only need a ribbon but the braiding makes it look complicated. it is girly but also very like useful as you can do stuff without messing it up/your hair getting in the way. it is also very versatile. it looks very cute but is appropriate for an older person too. it’s good for both casual occasions like a picnic and more formal occasions like prom (i’ll probably wear this hairstyle to prom). there is also like many variations of this hairstyles as you mentioned, the possibilities are endless! anyways i throughly enjoyed this video, and you are so pretty?? subscribed, definitely keep making more videos ♡

Pi for breakfast: I love your style! I’ve cut my hair to collar bone length, so I’m now looking at inspiration videos so that I can adapt them for shorter hair. Gone are the simple days when I could make a hair stick bun in 20 seconds. Turns out, your hair needs to be a certain length for the hair stick to hold properly or the stick falls out.

Historical Belle: SO pretty! I'm going to have to try this style as well! Thank you for sharing!

AuroraSimplica: I love your grey hair, it's absolutely beautiful! Especially because you look so young, it's very unique ❤️

BSienk Art: I've been looking more into my Ukrainian Heritage/traditional dress but haven't found any videos specifically for that (yet) but there seems to be overlap in Hungarian and Ukrainian styles. I very much appreciate your videos! These videos are so awesome!

Laura Matheus: I love love love your channel!! My hair is growing as never before and now I can FINALLY have the pleasure of doing your amazing hairstyles keep up the great inspirational videos

Jeanie McDonald: I use this hair style often. My hair is about mid thigh in length. Only thing I do a tad differently is that at the first cross over, I make the start of a knot, that first twist, then continue to wrap around my head. I am of Italian descent, and remember my Grandmother doing this before she cut it all off.

Moa A: Extremely late to the party.... But yes, we have a similar hairstyle in swedish tradition, however we use the ribbon to tie up the ponytail and then simply wrap it around the the hair (which has been slit into two just like here). Tie of the ribbon at the end of the hair, wrap it around your head and voilá

Kim Arsenault: I live your long hair and I always love ribbons I remember my late mom put two braids one on each side and she tried them together wonderful memory. Stay safe♥️

Hien Giang: nice hairstyle and good edit! I remember you did this style for Victoria and it looked mad cute

Vanessa O.: My grandmother did something kinda simular, I am from austria maybe because Hungary is our neighbor and I personally think there are a lot of similarities there :)

hela Zemni: Wuuuuiiiii Thank you so much.. You explained it so well that I could easily follow the steps. I looove this look!

Huh: This is my second time doing this hairstyle and I love it. It doesn’t hurt my head when I wear it like this.

Blurryface _: In Spain we have a similar hairstyle too, it looks so beautiful!

Daniella Fónagy: Are you Hungarian right? I’m so happy that I found someone from my own country who makes videos like this!

Amy Ott: I can't wait till my hair is long enough to try this hairstyle! I think braids mixed with ribbons look so nice! But, my hair isn't long enough yet to wrap around my head!

eyesofthegoddess2: This is lovely, just love your hairstyle. We do not have this style here in Canada, even when in older times. This is so pretty and I love following you.

Kristina Taddei: I adore you and your lovely, gray hair....now that I'm a year away from turning 60, all the ribbons and flowers make me feel like a "little kid"....but they look very appropriate and nice on you!!!...love your videos and your sense of humor....very educational and interesting....

Lucie Munson-Lamerre: Your style is so beautiful I wanna CRY. It's inspiring me to dress more feminine and with more colors and hairstyles, cause damn it's so much fun and soooo beautiful, so thank you! Love your videos, and I find it very beautiful the way that you celebrate the folk culture of your country <3 (my first real introduction to it, so thanks!)

Carlotta Kingry-Miles: Very helpful, thank you

Ryoko Moonbeam: Oh, I really want to learn this! I'm hoping to get a job at a grocery store and wanted some way to put my long hair up and out of the way without stuffing my hair full of pins...as they usually slowly work their way out.

Lauren Barber: My hair is so thick that I can't tuck the ends under braids (if I were to wrap it like this). I've tried this style so many times and just can't. My hair is also so smooth that bpbby pins slip out... so I've just given up on this kind of look. I can do fancy buns tho! That's my saving grace because I can't stand my hair being in my face

gouldgirl1966: Interesting. Thank you. My Mother is from Sopron in Hungary. I love learning about Hungarian culture.

Jennifer Wells: Oh! I have trouble keeping my "milkmaid" braids to stay in place, but I have never seen anyone starting with a ponytail. I'm off to try that now! I've tried sewing it to my hair with ribbon and that starts to hurt after a while. As do pins. Thanks!

Mayberry B: my mother's side of the family or Equadorian natives do this hair style for little girls usually always a girl 13 and under.

Crafter Lex: I just found you and I love your tutorials and personality

Courtney Brombosz: LOVELY! Thanks for sharing and I'm so happy I found you on YouTube! Authentically yours x

Ana Isabel Hernández Oquet: Love these tutorials ! Thanks for putting so much effort into them :) you deserve wayyy more views

Joanna Daniels: A similar technique is Italian Renaissance hair taping in which the ribbon is sewn into the hair http://www.mfgraffix.com/hird/faoilt/hairtape.html In addition, the Tudor Tailor has the hair taping as the style underneath the French Hoods.

Kristy Turner: Cool, I'm gonna try this out tomorrow. It's very pretty.

A H: Cool! I might give it a go. I currently wear my hair in a similar fashion. My hair is very fine and reaches the top of my bum. I use a thin, lightweight scarf 13 inches wide and about 64 inches long. Divide my hair in half, bringing to the front. Drape the scarf behind my neck to the front. I divide each section into two, and use the scarf as the third strand and make an English braid on each side, securing the ends with small elastics, wrapping the ends of my hair in the scarf. I bring one braid over my head and secure with 3 or 4 small bobby pins, bring the other braid over in front of the first, then tie the ends of the scarf behind my head and tuck the ends into the bit of scarf that’s between the braids at the back of my head. It only takes 10-15 minutes to do, and I get lots of compliments on it. I find it much easier than traditional “milkmaid “ braids, since I don’t have to struggle with tucking the ends of the braids somewhere. Plus the scarf adds volume and I have different colors to choose from. I like the method you demonstrated in that it requires no pins. Thanks for sharing!

_______________: Russian folk costume in some regions has a similair hairstyle, but for married women, who covered their hair. And, since these braids were hidden under some type of headdress, instead of ribbons, simple ties or coarse threads were used.

Boqueron Becky: You have inspired me to grow out my hair!

Julz Gulz: I love this hairstyle so much! I’ve always found it so enchanting. My grandfather immigrated to the US from Hungary... perhaps it is my Magyar folk roots coming out.

berryhitomi: Na akkor meg is van a motiváció, hogy miért is növesszem meg a hajam!❤️ Hogy meg tudjam csinálni azokat a hajakat, amiket készítesz!☺️

megs: How long has it taken you too get your hair to your current length? Love learning about braids with ribbon.i always wear braids or messy top knot bun

Prabhjot kaur Sandhu: Very nice and amazing hairstyle

Kimberly -: Wow I love this video and your voice is so calming. May I ask where did you get those beautiful earrings from?

LacrimaPhoenix: Well then, good lady, let me breefly, in as much of an essayist way as possible, lay out why this hairstyle was liked a good deal by me: Firstly, PINLESS! If it is pinless, it pretty much is for me. Lazyness is strong in this one, you must know. Secondly, folklore! Who doesn't like a hairstyle with a great tradition? Thirdly, of course there are very similar hairstyles around in my European Home country. As you say, us Europeans really do have a thing for anything braided :) Last, but not least: Your shiny personality might have to do with why I suddenly want to throw my hair up in big braids :) The style really suits you! Even though my hair is not as thick, I will certainly try and copy a bit of that ;)

Joyce Theobald: I will try this style on my youngest daughter. Her hair is very thick and is down to her hips at this point. Thank you.

Imaddiio!: im a man, and if you have someone in your family with long hair that can show us/me is there are any hungarian ribbon man styles. btw when my hair grows longer at least to midlength i might wear this and put a hoodie over it, over all i loved the style! <3

Farmnerd: I love your style!

Apple Pie: Beautiful !

Carina Webb: Thank you!! So so pretty

paqrikaX: My dance group is finally talking about getting back together for tanc practice! This will have to be a style I wear next time I perform :)

Mary DidYouKnow: I'm so determined now to get my hair to full health and grow it out. I've always wanted to be able to do hairstyles like this one, but my hair is so fine and thin, but God gave women long hair as a glory and that's supposed to mean me, too.

Sandy F: Beautiful hairstyle

Creative Cheers of Fashion Laura Flohr: Love how you wrap your braid around your neck while braiding

PsychoKat90: So lovely :) I would need some pins for sure, every time I do this type of hair style it falls right off when I tip my head back! xD

Booty Bee: Yeees. This hair style was veeeeeeery popular in Ukraine in ancient times , and even nowadays mothers makes it in little bit other variation for their little girls (at the age of primary school and kindergarten) And one very famous Ukrainian MP/deputy has been using this hairstyle for a long time to give herself a "especially Ukrainian" look)) to attract the attention of the electionators

Rejohnda Puckett: Very pretty

Tzayani Ramirez: I'm mexican and I've seen similar hairstyles in some indigenous communities and in folkloric dancing, it's so pretty ✨

Laura Saraiva: So beatifuuuuuuuul!!!! Honestly I´m loving your videos, I´m a viwer from Brazil!!! I love your content

Kim Arsenault: Thank you for the thumbs up that means alot to me❤️❤️

Rebecca Thistle: Woow! Why your channel has come to my attention only now?!?! BTW love your hair! I hope to grow that gray or white as my grandma

مرحبا كيف حالك: In bosnia we also have a similar tradition

Bogii Gilinger: Régebben találtam rád, annyira örülök, hogy visszatértél❤️❤️

Cary Karadasia: Women from greece like m'y grandma always made braids like this from young age. My grandma had red long hair on a braid till the day she died.

Kasia Jo Helen Szopka :3: We have it in Poland as well :)

Janet: Me: tries this with cheep synthetic Christmas present ribbon. Result: almost no ribbon visible

mandohoney: How to look like a lady... i love it.

ElisabettaVS: oooh I love it! :D

M A: Hahaha I have a long pixie cut and am happily watching :)

Mackintosh: Do you have any videos on sleep hairstyles from early ages? I feel like that's the secret to how people grew such long hair in the past

Michaela Beneker: What is the name of the music at the end credits, where can I listen to the full song? I like it. Also this video and hairstyle are lovely

Crystal S: I really like this hairstyle as I also have long hair not as long as you, but lets just say they reach till my buttocks and they are thick. I tried following your video multiple times and I can criss-cross just once but the braid keeps slipping . Any suggestions?

Emma Philo: Such beauty

Anna Domokos: megtaláltam egy videódat régebben és megesküdtem volna hogy magyar akcentusod van, de ezek szerint jól éreztem :D 10 évig néptáncoltam, mi is hasonlóan kötöttük a hajunkat :))

Jennifer Brandsma: So cute!

Ana Lorena: I am Mexican and many of the older women from indigenous cultures here still wear that hairstyle. But the norm here is the variation you mentioned where you use just one ribbon and put half in each braid.

Martha Ross: You are a delight. Trying this style next

Anna M.: I have tried doing various crown braids like this before and it never stays quite secure on my head because my hair is thick all the way to the ends, and its heavy. How best would you suggest I could do this style and work around that? Sometimes even many pins don't help. Also, my hair is just long enough to wrap over the middle part, but not as luxuriously long like yours. Just curious in many ways haha, much love to you and your videos on traditional and oh so pretty styles

janibii_: this is a popular hairstyle in Germany, especially on Oktoberfest

Ariane Winter: You have amazing hair and I realy like practical hairstyles that do not need a lot of stuff to make . . . My hair is to short, but maybe I will get there . . . I have pretty thick hair, but if it gets a certein langth id does not grow any longer . . .at all

Michael83: She is so beautiful!

Salwa Awad: omg u r funny and cute :D and i love ur grey hair so yeah, i SMASHED the subscribe button :3

Elisabet Finlayson: So I don’t think my hair is long enough, but at least three or maybe two inches. However, I’ll try this with my hair extentions and get back to you. And in Norway, (but I can’t remeber which region/bunad does this), we have a similar hair style, except the ribbon wraps all the way around the hair, but is pulled and tied back in a similar way.

Zita Sunflower: Nice

l r: Please uplod more ribbons hair steyls

viru karanagi: Nice hairstyle

A H: beautiful but I do not have hair long enough ... :/ . were does one get decorative hair combs?

Lynett Ramsaran: Nice looking

Nixiell: I wonder if I got 3 thicker ribbons for each braid after I tie the not to hold the braid in place I if you could just continue braid the ribbon tho wrap around the head more.

Mrs. Anglo Ortho: If this is what unmarried maidens wore, what did married women wear?

Li anne: your hair is so gorgeous! i'm a natural dark blonde but i dye my hair black because i just don't feel like myself as a blonde. it makes me kind of sad that i can't grow out my grey hairs naturally.

l r: Super hair steyl

vk chanel: amazing

Muhra D: How old are you ? My hair is similar to yours I’m 25

Josy: Is it also important for stability that the ribbons are on the outside or is it not important if I don't want the ribbons to show necessarily?

Courtney Bergsieker: your hair looks more brown than silver

aditi mishra:
