If you guys want to learn how to create this awesome, pixie haircut then definitely watch today's video. What'S going on YouTube Steven, a salon guy here so today I'm going to be doing a new pixie haircut for 2019 and I think it's gon na be the year for shorter hair for women. I I just I don't have a feeling, but something a little more like edgy or a lot more layers, a little bit like a shorter shag type haircut, and what I'm doing today isn't going to create that haircut on this mannequin head and we're gon na. Do some kind of breaking stuff down, so it's gon na be kind of like a step-by-step. So let us begin with the haircut so we're gon na start in the back for the first section right in the nape area, and what I'm doing is I'm sectioning off the four quadrants basically separating the front from the back, so you just want to push this Out of the way, so we can clearly focus on this area right in through here. I'M not using any clips, I'm going to work very efficiently and all I'm doing is just combing the hair out of the way and then our first section and our first area is gon na, be right down in the nape area and the same thing with this. I'M combing the hair out of the way just like this no clips, because I want to make this a little bit easier and I want to work more efficiently now. What I want to do is I want to leave a little bit of length, so I want to create kind of like a pixie, almost shagged, so we're gon na leave a little bit of length throughout the back here and all I'm doing literally with one hand, Is I'm just cutting this straight across I'm not using any tension, I'm not using any sort of I'm not holding the hair, it's all freehand and what I'm going to do is we're gon na continue to do this throughout the entire back home. Everything straight down, and just basically in one shot, we're gon na get rid of the hair. Do this on both sides and then we'll be done with our first part of the haircut, which is the base. So if you comb all this down - and you don't see any hair whatsoever that you either cut from the guide, then it's time to move on. So I'm just gon na go back right here. Skim any little pieces that see right here - and this is the most important part - is establishing the base. You can't have a good haircut without a good, solid base or foundation. So, let's clean this off here and then we'll talk about connecting it now we're going to do. Is I'm going to angle my fingers pointing upwards this way, so I got it locked in pretty tight and we have to also visualize where we're going to you know what the end look is going to look like right. So we know that we're gon na have a shorter haircut, but what I really want to focus on are the layers. Okay, the layers throughout this entire haircut, and you want to make sure you're standing right in front of where you're cutting really really crucial. With a haircut like this, so here we are coming around the ear area and take note I'm not cutting around the ear. I am leaving a little bit of length right through here, as you can see. So it's about right for the bottom of the ear and then what I'm gon na do is comb here and start to angle. My fingers upwards. That way, I'll take one last section right here there you can see right there and I'm gon na cut straight down. Like this, so we're literally creating you know a face frame and then right in through here I like to comb the hair straight down with the comb, not my fingers - and let's take this last piece right here, because we're going to come back and probably tweak this. A little bit and all we're doing is creating our foundation, all right, we're creating a nice foundation working all the way through here, a nice rounded shape, and what we're going to do is the same thing on the other side and then we'll come back all right. Now the foundation is complete, we're going to actually start with our first section, which is going to be right at the top back of the head right here now. The only reason I want to do this is because and start right here is simply because I have a vision for this haircut of what I want to do, and I think that I want to start here so I can then connect everything to this one piece. Alright, so I want this to be the main focus point of the entire haircut, which is right here, alright. So when you're creating your guide for this type of look, it's imperative that you set this up first, so we're going to do is now I'm going to stand like this right. I'M facing this way, so my body is positioned to cut right in front of where I'm going, where I'm standing and all we're gon na do is pull everything straight out from the head and we're going to cut to that one piece: this is gon na, be The easiest part I think, of the entire haircut and, as you can see, I'm breezing through this. Alright, when you get into this corner area, you don't want to bring us out this way like out. You want to keep it relatively behind the ear so you're keeping some of that weight, which then you can go back in and tweak after you're done. Ok with the with the back, that's part of the sides, so all I'm doing is following my guide of everything straight out from the head and I'm gon na actually work downwards, so I'm starting from the top and I'm working my way down. Okay, alright, this is done right into this area. What do we do? Next? Pull the hair straight out from the head, as you can see, and we're gon na cut straight up, so this haircut literally is just following the head shape, keeping a very consistent pattern. Pretty simple: to follow: ok, again, right in through here in this corner area, you don't want to extend it out too much this way, one or more bring it back here like this towards you, so we leave a little bit that weight in the corner. Here'S that corner piece and I'm bringing it back toward me because I'd rather get rid of that weight, knowing that I have it afterwards, so now we're back into the center again and we're going to work from the center towards the other side. So, let's skim through this and then we'll come back when we're done and ready to move on. Okay, now I'm going to tilt the head a little bit this way and here's where I'm going to cut palm the palm just so I can get a little bit closer to the head towards the nape area and remove some of that excess weight again and through Down here now, I'm not looking to cut the bottom length which is down through here, because again I mentioned I wanted to keep it a little bit longer, but all we're doing for this is removing some of that weight. That'S what I want to do is have this free-flowing and very soft and textured. So again, I'm not looking to cut the length but just remove some weight. So here now I'm switching up going upon the palm. My body position basically has been in the same spot. This whole haircut, I really haven't moved all right here, is where I'm gon na hold everything out horizontally to cross-check, and if you do see any pieces that are like really really uneven or really offsets could be a sign of a few things. I think you may need to go back in and check. You know your body position check your tension. If it's a couple little pieces here and there, which is normal, then that's totally fine, don't be a filthy worried about that. But if you're getting like really really uneven sections and things are way off, you may have to go back, you know and you can snip it off. If you see, if it's like one piece, then that's fine, but if it's like this whole section from here to here is a lot longer than definitely I wouldn't. I wouldn't suggest that so the back now is pretty much done for the most part, and here is when we connect the back to the top. So here's what was our guide right here? We have to connect this to this right. It sounds fairly simple, but don't get ahead yourselves. What you want to do is you want to continue to follow the head shape like that? Alright remember, the head is like this. You don't want to take a piece right here and cut it without a guide horizontally. You'Ll create a line, you'll create a whole new another section, which is not what you're looking to do. So what I like to do is continue to follow that roundness, and I even do this with my long hair cuts as I continue to follow the head shape. All the way when I'm connecting the most crucial parts, okay, so now we have all this blends in here and it's time to now work horizontally towards the front, and this is where we can start to move towards the front of the head, because we already have Our established guide, so I'm gon na comb, my hair straight up, there's my guide for underneath my left elbow is up and parallel and we're good to go. So I'm combing everything straight up within this middle section right through here, going from the back to the front and it's fairly repetitive and somewhat simple. As long as you follow your guide and you keep you don't start dropping your arms. This way, body positioning is really really really crucial when it comes to haircutting and I like working right down the center of the top, because guess what that's the top of the head, you know, there's the top the corners and the sides right now, I'm focused just On the top, which is where you should be alright, so now it's time for the corners, which is right here, hold everything straight out, and then we cut so let's skim through this and then we're done we'll start to work into this bottom. The sides tops done corners done, and this is the sides right here. This isn't the sides. This is the sides, so I'm gon na stand in the same spot. I'Ve been, and I'm gon na comb everything straight out from the head and I'm really gon na focus in right on this area. So you can see right there. You can actually see it all that long hair, you know, and on top of it's too short hair. So that's what you're cutting to is to match that up. You know a really few simplify haircutting and you really break it down for what it's worth. You know it's like putting the pieces of a puzzle together there we go and there so what I would do now, which I'm going to do is I like to always cut a variety of different ways. So right now I'm switching up the palm the palm because there may have been you know an angle I couldn't reach for a specific section or the hair wouldn't really comb right, so don't be afraid to switch up your hand, position your body's doing some kind of Jump on this haircut here and really be, I like to say, aggressive, because you're really being thorough, okay, you're, really really taking your time, you're covering all ends, you're, seeing how the hair will fall and all different all different ways. So that's why it's imperative to do that and it also. It really is what gives a good haircut to be honest with you, alright, so that side is done. We still have to do the corners and the sides. So, let's breeze through that and then we'll come back for the next steps now I'd like to do is just cross-check everything, so I'm gon na cut this vertically now from top to back just so, I can make sure that this is all cut properly, because if You don't do this what's gon na happen is you're gon na have a lot of weight in through here now. It'S, I guess. If you want that heavy weight, that's fine, but really what I'm looking to do is just to create balance. You know just to make sure everything is really working seamlessly together on top, because what is that gon na do that's gon na ensure a very good, long-lasting haircut, which is what the client wants and which is what you should do. You know, as far as being a stylist, this is where you can really be aggressive, hold the hair out multiple different angles. I do this with a lot of my men's. Haircuts too, is I really try to go over the hair as much as I possibly can? Look for trouble area problem areas just to make sure like you know, oh well, this may this could happen, or that could happen. You know almost like I'm looking and forcing errors in the haircut, even though there may not be, but by going through all this, it really ensures that, like no matter what you do, it's still gon na look good all right now for the very very front. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to use my feather razor now to add some texture to the front, all right so when we're doing this. This is why I left this front a little bit longer here and I'm gon na go back in and do some more texturizing throughout the sides, but what I, what I want to do is I want to really make this very edgy. Okay, so the best way to do this, for me, is to just go in take pieces of hair chunks of hair and just kind of use the razor to slide down on it like that, all right, that's what this tool is for is it create a very Soft jagged edge, which is what you want. You don't want this to be a perfect straight. You know a big clump of hair right on her forehead and also keep in mind. You know we're working it down and blending it into this part here so make sure everything you cut. It'S all gon na be connected, and if you have to pull the hair out, that's fine and check for any longer pieces. Do that don't worry about it all! Right so now we're gon na work on to the other side, and if there's like a side part or something you just got a really, you know when I say eyeball it. This is where you do you eyeball it. You stand right in front of the client and you really just go to town, and you really have some fun here. What you want to do is you want to make sure that, like you know, you have your your game plan, your the end result. What the look you're going for how edgy we're gon na make this, so I want to create a lot of texture and jagged pieces and some some like this. This is exactly what I'm looking for something that could be fun, something that she can really piece out. Some edge to it and that's exactly what I got just like that, so what we're gon na do is we're going to blow-dry it and then come back and texturize it even more okay. So now what I'm going to do is I'm going to go with my thinning shears like this and I'm going to just go in and twist and cut and what this is doing, its again, adding a little more texture to the haircut. It'S adding some some more definition, which is gon na. Allow you for more piscina, some more texture. You know I always love doing this. This is like my favorite part of the entire haircut. I wouldn't suggest doing this if you're trying it for the first time on a human to definitely try it on a mannequin head. First, be very, very careful that you don't cut yourself, because this is something that is little more advanced. You have to be very comfortable with your coordination, your hands and your scissors and stuff like that, so that you're you're not gon na hack away and lose a finger. So, as you can see what that's doing it's just creating you know, I'm not looking to thin the hair, but what I'm looking to do is to create some more softness and texture throughout the entire haircut. And if it's too heavy in some areas, then you'll be able to see you'll be able to feel it. You know and that's kind of what we're going for and now we're getting that response of the haircut, which is what we want. You know the response of when we touch the hair. We move it. It'S gon na respond exactly how we want see. That'S exactly what I'm looking for. So now, I'm going to style it and then we'll come back for the finished. Look, alright, guys! Here'S the finished result and, let's break down again what we did is first created and established the perimeter linked to down throughout the bottom angle. It up on both sides then literally held everything straight out from the head after I created my guide right into here. Pulled everything out this way: change ham positioning has gotten to the bottom, so we get nice and close then checked it horizontally. So we really have a nice balanced, even shape then connecting here the back with the top going towards the face, and once I establish my guy, then we cut everything horizontally work down the center panel first right in through here then after the center panel panel is Done right down in through here, then we went into the corners and the sides on both sides again pulling it out from the head. It'S probably about I'd, say two and a half inches in length throughout all in through here then blow-dried it and then went in with the razor the feather razor to create that nice textured fringe area went back in with the thinning shears to create even more texture And here we have the finished result. Now far our styling goes or products. You can use talc, which is my matte styling spray. But this is the haircut that all the haircut is gon na do all of the work you can literally wake up out of bed. Put no product in it, and this is the kind of look that you're going to get. En Lewis: I love this cut. That’s exactly what I’m looking for.

Stephie H.: Ignore the haters honey. Finally have something that "shows" what I am trying to explain to my stylist. Thank you

Shade: I love this because I’m growing out a buzz cut and this is exactly what my hair looks like. Even the color. I’m super self-conscious about it because I feel like it works strange but it makes me feel good to know that people actually do this on purpose!

Barbara Kornacki: This is a great style and you do it so well. This would be a great style for summer and looks like it could grow nicely into a shag too. I'm a boomer and love these layered styles like we used to have years ago. Thank you for showing them!

iki: This is lovely! My pixie is currently at that weird growing phase so I’m still contemplating on getting myself a mullet or this shaggy hairstyle(or maybe a combination of the two!) excited to try this one out myself. Thanks so much for this!

adearabby: Love the presentation! Right to the point and excellently executed - perfect demonstration.

Hairstyles - Hairstylist: Beauty haircut!

MaviHulett: Absolutely loved it! easy to maintain and I love that messy look! Steve it was beautifully done❤✂

Kris M: Love this!! I have short hair now. EONS ago, I had a shag (with long hair) when it first came in vogue. I always liked it with my natural wave. For the last few years I have wanted to go back to a short shag. I have an appointment with my stylist next week and I'm going to tell her this is what I want. Thanx for the great video!

Mike Suszi: I had my hairdresser in Carlsbad & Maui give me this haircut. It’s fabulous! Grows out beautifully even after 7 weeks still looks good. Very happy and will keep this look for a long while. Mahalo Nui Loa

Barbara Jackson: Followed your tutorial and the haircut turned out quite well. I am a trained artist, not a hairdresser but your clear, concise instructions made this work. Still quarantining here, so one needs to reach out and do things previously not considered. The person’s hair that I cut, had not had a professional cut since February. She looks and feels great. THANK YOU.

Mojca H.: It may be "modern 2019 haircut", but i will be getting it done this week...love it!! Just hope it turns out ok, i have petty thick and wavy/curly hair and want a haircut that won`t take too much time in the morning...

Sandra Dummer: Stephen, I’m a former hairdresser, I love learning from your videos, you explain everything so..well, and your very patient.

For Him: ❤ this so much. Gonna try it myself. You make it look so easy. I will follow your guidelines! Thanks so much.

Mommy Briggs: Such a flattering hair style, so nicely done

Charla Pickerel: Thanks for all the instruction! Took me a while to find my cut. You broke it down awesomely!

Judi Fox: I have been guiding hairdressers for year's to give me this cut. Very few get it right. I first got it in the late 60s from a guy hairdresser from California. Thank you. Now to find someone who is willing to do this style for me now in 2021. I'm 66 year's old and really need to feel a little good about myself. Thank you again. ✝

Scenic views: I am not a professional...but I watched your video and cut my hair just like you said ....it turned out EXACTLY like I wanted...easy breezy.. thank you for this video...you rock . I am a Caucasian living in a small town in Africa.. no one knows how to cut our hair. So your video was a perfect tool for a do it yourself ❣️❣️❣️

Luann Nielson: Thanks for the wonderful tutorial! I love this cut!!

Mary W: Thank you so much for this video I love this cut and will be getting my hair cut like this at a salon. I'm embracing my silver gray hair and shorter cuts like this allow me the opportunity to rock more of my silver gray hair and make my hair appear to have more volume

Michele Jordan: Thank you so much for this video! I cut my own hair and messed it up a d was able to fix it with this video! It looks super!

JessCelArtzx: This is literally how I used to wake up every morning when I had my pixie cut lmao no need to cut it like that, I really miss those days, I cannot wait to get a pixie again

Eugenia G. Rodríguez C.: Hermoso corte y muy buena técnica!!!

TheWormyTech: Second time trying to cut my wifes hair. Corn Teen Buty Salon. Went from long hair to short. Scared to death I was gonna mutilate her head. Only took three hours or so to cut her hair. All turned out fine and she has an awesome haircut with your help. We picked up some hair cuttin scissors from Amazon, but didn't have the thinning shears or the razor. Lightly snipped straight into her bang area (seemed like a good idea at the time) Gotta see if you have a video on what kind of shampoo/conditioner or whatever to keep her hair from becoming frizzed out. Thinned out fine hair.

Margaret Dell: I had this cut a while ago and I just loved it. Now, I have to tell my stylist this is what I want again.

K FM: The cut I love! Thank you! Awesome tutorial also.

823Gabrielle: Awesome videos. I'm not a hairdresser but love to learn so I can better explain to my hairdresser how to cut my hair. There's nothing worse than a bad cut

endermars: you give me really wholesome vibes. im literally not interested in hair dressing at all but ive been watching your videos for like an hour now

Lynn Pyka: I want to cut my moms hair with this great pixie look for her 77 year uptake on a great look for her. Thanks for all your time and details.

Marcello Nino: This cut is awesome, i love it! your channel is amazing. It's a very professional job. Congratulations man!

korber De Kraai: I love this I want my hair to be like that ❤️

Chrissy: I did not know this haircut is an official cut. I had my daughter cut a chin length bob for me and slowly but surely began hacking away using this same guide line. I made my layers a little longer going more for a Princess Diana cut! ha ha You can do this yourself! You just need a 3 way mirror. I also left the bangs longer at first, you do that by over directing towards the back of your head. Now I have them a bit shorter. Great cut, do it!!! It also grows out into early 80's feathered cut! Love it!

Shining Sky: Great job and techniques. It looks great.

Bam Bam: Hey bro thanks for this, I’ve been having so much trouble finding a video for this cut lmao. Love the explanation, I’ll update if I end up doing it

Kathy Knuteson: Wish you could cut my hair just like this! Love it!

Caper. here: Do you have to have thick hair for the pixie shag ? PS. In the seventies, my sister used to give friends the shag by pulling all the hair to the top of the head, putting it in a ponytail, with an elastic around it. Then just , in one cut, chop off ponytail. All the layers fall naturally. The back will need to be trimmed .

VICKIE LEE: YOU ARE GENIUS, VERY TALENTED, I HAVE WORN THIS STYLE SO MANY TIMES THROUGHOUT MY LIFE & I GRADUATED HIGH SCHOOL IN THE MIDDLE 70S, I HAD A MEDIUM SHAG HAIRCUT & I LOVE THE STYLE , IN FACT I AM GETTING MY HAIRCUT TOMORROW & I BELIEVE I'M GOING BACK TO THIS CUT IT'S SO EASY TO TAKE CARE OF, I HAVE MISSED IT !!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH & IN ALL OF MY YEARS I DO KNOW THAT MEN MAKE THE BEST HAIR STYLISTS ✂ ☮

Debra Clanton: I've been trying to get someone to give me this haircut for years but nobody can get it like this!

Carolyn Lee: I wish you would show doing this type haircut on naturally kinky, very thick hair (that I've been cursed with!)--I love watching you work, but NO ONE has hair like mine, and definitely NOT a mannequin!

Lynda Wheat: Absolutely love it!

Robyn Alice: Literally what I did to myself to chop away the non-virgin ends and start anew. I so wish you'd have let this video out about 8mos ago. *It's glorious.*

Delamore official: I used to have it but more short on the sides ...but this was literally the haircut I had for a long time & I can’t forget it was hard for me to grow it out after that’s the bad part ever

Janet Six: Thanks This is really helpful!

Diane Barnes: Very helpful. Thank you!

Jen and Dog: What does twisting the section do before cutting with texturising scissors; as opposed to just cutting the section flat?

Nancy Oleksy: This is the cut I want. I would love a couple of regular pictures to show my stylist.

dian taylor: I’ve been looking for something new and edgy. Thanks for sharing !

nina wade: Love the look for myself!

Ana Burns: I love it. Thank you.

zuleyka torres: I love your videos very informative and the looks are gorgeous but I wanted to ask you I'm growing out a shaved head and I'm at a awkward stage where it looks like a mullet!! but my hair is very thick and wavy do you think I should give it a pixie kind of style so it grows more evenly and I don't go crazy have a blessed day thanks for your answer

Mary-Starr Carpenter: LOVE IT!!!!!!! Perfect

Ama Lagoa: Awesome , I just love it !!

Odalis M Viveros: Instantly subscribed learned so much

Emli Ganea: I like it.Nice cut and clean

Gayle S.: Love this cut!! Due to over processing of hair colors I probably need to cut my hair short It took a beating LOL.. Awesome video.

introvertedthem: Hi! This haircut is great. I wanted to know if this would look good with thin hair? Cause I love this, just wanted to make sure, I won't look bald.

dream: Would love to get this pixie cut if I had small and elegant face characteristics, like the doll. My crooked nose and teeth say no

Jillybean: Mr. Marinaro, I've been desperately seeking my envisioned “holy grail” of haircuts using pictures that were close, but not quite right.... I like this but not that, can you do the bangs in this pic with the back from this pic? I used words like textured, lots of layers, piecey fringe bangs to the side, messy look etc.... to no avail....Until now! Thank you Sir for getting it all right with this cut! I'm sending it off to my hairdresser today, can't wait to try it!

Marietta P.: Very nice cut and well explained. I would love to get a cut like that. Where do you cut hair? City?

Mixed up Youth Chesterfield: I can tell you have old school skills. These remind me of 80s

꧁Southerngal꧂: Love it.

꧁Southerngal꧂: Love it.

Irene Cvietkovich: I love the pixie hair cut but I'm so bad at styling it I have naturally curly and wavy hair it always looks better when the stylist style my hair

Karol W: love it thanks

reichmuth 100: Not going to lie..But That's a really cute cut!

Bookaholic ASMR: My hair is literally like silk - smooth, straight, very fine and thin, with oval face. Is there any chance that this can work for me?

Carole Brelo: Wow! He is very good! That was fun to watch.

Pam H: I love this. Is there a photo of it on line so I can bring it to the hairdresser?

Patty Johnson: Can this be done on thin hair?

Amin Alizadeh: Can you make a tutorial on how to style your hair like Jordan Barret? Many thanks !!

BORN TO CREATE: Thank you for this I don’t like pixie cuts but we get em

Izabella: Would this still look as good on women with fine hair?

Candle Lynx: I want my hair to be like this except that i want the back and the sides shaved at an #8

daisy rose: It was perfect

Kathi Schenk: I have baby fine thining hair. Sure hopes this can work for me! Or if anyone has any other suggestions…

Pfennig 7TX7: Could you help me? I grew my naturally curly hair out from my blonde with highlights and low lights last year. I am totally gray now. My hair is really curly and I do like it, but I have had unending bad haircuts this past 1.6 years. I just cut off the "mullet," that the last hair dresser left me with. Do you take clients? Where are you? I would actually fly to where you are if you cut naturally curly hair. Anyway, just thought I would ask. I am 66 on my birthday, June 2, 2019; jimminee crickets, that sounds old.

Sharon Stevens: Fabulous!
