Hello, everyone Kay here on my Homestead in Tennessee and people, have been asking me nicely to cut my hair. It is getting rather long and other people have asked, at least in the past, how I do my hair when I do it up, so I thought today I would cut my hair and I can show you how you can cut your hair two easy ways to Cut your hair, if you have long hair, I could also demonstrate how to cut your hair if it was short, but I'm not going to cut my hair that short, I'm just going to trim it. So we'll talk about it a little bit and I'll, give you the confidence to cut your own hair, which might come in handy. You need to know how to do things right. First of all, I wanted to point out the reason I kept growing. My hair when it needed so desperately for a trim is because I wanted to see if I could get it to my waist. It'S never been long. Long in my whole, life, probably to here, is the longest it's ever been, because I was an actor and you had a head shot that you paid hundreds of dollars for and when you walked in the door to the audition. You needed to look like that and having long wavy out of control hair was not your typical hairstyle for commercials or or women my age, so the agent would always say. Oh, you need to have your hair short, so I never got a chance to grow. My hair now that I'm here I do what I want and I decided to let it grow. So, as you can see back here, this is my waist, and so I did reach my goal and so now I can trim it and what I plan to do is trim off two inches, but whenever you're cutting hair yourself, you cannot be real precise because you Might find that you've gotten it a little shorter here in a little longer here and you you need to you need to keep cutting until it's level, so the whole idea of cutting your hair is sort of like I was talking about the butterfly. You know it comes out of the Cocoon an absolute carbon copy on each side and split down the middle, so each Wing is identical. The proboscis, which goes out comes together into one after it's hatched, and everything is exactly the same on each side. So you you want your hair symmetrical unless you want some kind of crazy hairdo, like some people wear today, but most people like to have their hair symmetrical so you're gon na, especially if you're gon na have longer hair You're Gon na Want to have the length In the front, the levels to match okay, so we're probably going to go for a level about like that. But first I need to wet my hair and then I can tell you more foreign foreign. I got a little wet, but let's get started. Oh okay. So the first thing is to try and comb out my hair. Now normally I use some leave-in conditioner, but today I'm going to use California extra virgin, avocado oil and hope this gives me some more condition. You know my hair is very fly away and wavy and Frizzy, and all of that, so let me work with it a little bit till I get it nice and smooth and then we'll start cutting pretty straight. It has a a little bit of conditioner and oil in it to keep it kind of wet longer, although this is going to be a very quick haircut, if you have slightly wavy hair like me, or very wavy, hair you're, going to be tearing your hair out To get the tangles out and it's just and what happens is it gets thinner and thinner and thinner until it gets to the bottom, and you just got a little bit left. So basically, I am just going to bring all of this forward when you bring It Forward and you cut it, then when it goes back it's longer in the back, so you can just imagine the law this. This part, which is the back it's coming around to here, so it's going to get cut at the same level. The front gets cut so when it goes to the back it'll be longer, and so it will just naturally be tapered. Okay, let's make our first cut. Everything is here now. If you have a smock that is ideal, I don't have one. I never planned to do a video cutting my hair, but here I am so anyway. If you don't have a good pair of shears, don't worry about it. I use these cheap little. I think these were like from my sons when they were in kindergarten or grade school or something I mean they're, just the cheapest little scissors. I cut my hair with these for years and I finally just bought a pair recently. I have wavy hair so as it dries it gets harder to manage and I am going to do I'm going to start with two inches. So that's two inches, it's very uneven. So we're going to even it up now. Obviously, if you have really thick hair, you may need to chop on it. It may not be such an easy little clip. You might have to do it a little more, but let's see, let's see how we did it's. The same okay, so I could stop there, but I wanted to demonstrate to you it's always nice to take the top section of your hair and I'm sure you'll recognize this from your hair cutter. This gets really a lot harder to do as your hair gets longer, because you simply cannot reach the end of your hair. You see how long that is. Gosh, that's very long um. What I'm going to do is um. I'M going to pull it out like like that, so hopefully, hopefully it comes off as an angle. You probably won't be cutting your cutting hair this long. So it's a lot easier to do so once again I'll pull it in and I'm going to take off two inches okay. So what that does? Is that just lifts up the back a little bit, and what and the one thing that I always do when I cut my hair is and it this it doesn't matter what length of hair you know up to short. Really, as you take the front section, I'm gon na leave my brush pretty soon it's getting tangled and you - and this is how I used to do it when it was shorter. I think I've got a little bit too much on this side. It'S hard to see. Yeah, so this is a great way to cut your bangs and you need them nice and wet. This is, and now this is where I would cut it. When I had my hair short, I cut it. I started down here and it went straight up to the tip of my nose. I started down here at the same level say, for example, you would start here. You know so that's about the same, and then you literally just cut at an angle straight up to your nose. I'M not going to do that far because I don't want bangs and the reason I don't want bangs is because they drive me crazy, but a little bit of uh as long as I can get it into a ponytail. Now that I'm gardening out here, I just have to have the hair off of my face I have to, but you can see, I haven't had a haircut since 19 August of 19. and that's over three years, but you can still see the angle. So I'm just going to go like that. I don't even think I got quite two inches off. Let'S try that again see that's in the other section: okay, okay, let's measure! Okay, I got this one a little bit short, so I'll come back okay. So what that does is it just gives you a little bit of softness around the face and a little bit of lift in the back and basically there's your haircut and, of course, you can do this at any kind of shorter level. I did want to point out that if you, if you want more layers, if you're doing it shorter like if your hair is like here and you're doing more layers, you just want to pull it back from your face and just you know cut it. I'M sorry. It'S harder to, I don't want to have you destroy your hair, but it's it's actually very easy to um, pull it up and you always want to cut it add a little bit of an angle. You see the angle of the scissors instead of cutting it like that when you've pulled it out like this, you need to cut it at a little bit of an angle and that way, when you let it go, the very top hair is separated from the lower Hair by a quarter of an inch - and it just gives you a little bit more fullness and softness, and so now I want to do - demonstrate very quickly how I do the the hairdo that people have remarked about, and this works with shorter hair. As long as you can twist it the whole of your hair up, it will work and what you do is you just pull it out and twist it, and you can do this neater or sloppier. You can do this with dry hair or wet, although, if you do it with wet hair, you wind up with some nice waves when it is dry, so I just put that there for temporary. If it's long enough, you can weave this side into this side. It'S not weaving, it's just twisting so that extra two inches that I had really made this. You know adding this side possible and then you just kind of shape it like that and then there's always the question of what to do with this. You know, and I try to just you know you can keep twisting it and then just tuck it in the back and then you've got your other clip and you can move this clip to include the front. So it's even and symmetrical and that's you know for a five minute hairdo and it's not bad. I have been coloring my own hair since 1997.. It'S very easy to do, but before that I had highlights, I was a working actor in New York. Everyone had highlights. I found a great gal, she was booked solid and when I moved to LA she decided to come out to LA because Barbra Streisand wanted her to do her highlights. So she would do mine when she came out. She was 250 dollars by that time and I you've got to do it two or three times a year. So I said I can't afford this. This forget this. So in 97 I had shoulder length hair and in 97 I went to New York to audition for something - and I got a very short haircut and it was a very 30 style. I'Ll put the picture on screen, I absolutely loved it and I started dyeing my hair. It was more of a light brown reddish color and I even had that same color. When I started my channel, you may recall, but as every woman knows at some point, you have to start going lighter because you start getting gray. I have been using the same brand and I believe the price didn't change for at least 20 years. It may still be the same. It was 14.95 for at least two two decades and it's called nature color, and they have one line to cover gray and one line to cover regular non-grade hair. I mix the two together to get kind of a custom. Look at some point. I may decide to stop all together also, but I just thought you might find that interesting, because if you really need to save money, you can easily color your own hair. It is not a big deal and you don't have to fear it, especially when you have a product that is non-toxic. If you want that whole shag looked like Farrah Fawcett made famous back in the 80s. It is so easy to do if you have long, hair and you're just tired of just that boring long thing and you you want layers and you want to flow. You pull all of your hair over and pull it into a ponytail right here right here on your pineal gland and you make a cut, you make one cut right there and you take the rubber band out and you let it go down, and I did that To a girl in college, she was in my dorm and she had beautiful long, thick black hair and she wanted me to do it and I did it and it was fabulous. So that's something else you can do and that's an even easier haircut. So I I hope you enjoy this and I look forward to seeing you in the next video don't forget to subscribe, hit the bell for notifications and I'll see you next time.

Lynn Cobert: Love your hair, it looks like mine, to my waist. Grew it out for exactly the same reason as you! I do cut my own hair, I am very gray and wavy like yours. Usually wear it in a pony tail, might start leaving it down, get lots of compliments on my hair.❤️

gointothedogs2: Im glad you didnt chop it off. Ive let mine get way too long a couple times over the last few years. Just a little trim here and there does wonders. Im the farah fawcet style from the 70s but as grey comes in the textures are two kind. I still have the full very thin strands and then the thicker fuller body grey white...so its not easy to keep the style or the shape. But i also have been doing the way you first did and needed a refresher. Nothing worse than waist long hair and make a really bad oops. Id love to go get a real salon cut but they dont seem to keep to doing what you want without trying to access you for other treatments they offer. And its like going to the dr. not a relaxing perk up and spa type experience. Its all about the money and artificial. Id like natural but style and shape with fullness. Last time I went she said...wait just a minute...came with tweezers and didnt ask and just started pulling hair out of a mole...OH my goodness....i was freaking on the inside...so never stepping foot into the meat market salon again. lol its much easier to garden with long hair tied back then short hair that grows out and hits you in the eyes when you bend down. You do you and enjoy your goals and dreams.

Kim Brown: That was fun! I’m in my mid sixties and since I started to watch your videos, have decided to just let my hair grow. I want to just let the grey come in. Also…no one gets to have an opinion about your hair!! You are a beautiful, independent and free spirited woman. This is an amazing time in life to not give a %#$@ what people think

Mary Kapla: Your hair Is beautiful! Trying to grow mine out, but it has thinned out so much. I would like to try to trim mine myself. Enjoying your videos. ❤️

Sue D.: Awesome video Kaye! Cutting your hair has always been a little scary but after watching many hair cutting videos, I just started cutting my hair last year as summer heat drove me crazy. I also have very long hair and with all the covid regulations at salons, I cut 8 inches off and it looked great. I stopped coloring my hair which is all white now about 7 years ago even though I used to do it myself. Saves lots of money, time, and is a handy skill to have. Your long hair is fabulous!

Mary-Ellen Armstrong: That’s almost identical to how I cut my hair, old scissors as well! I’ve been trimming my own hair all of my life. It’s always been long. You look beautiful. Those of us of a certain age have earned the right to wear our hair as we see fit!

The Humble Homestead: I LOVE the long hair!! Anyone telling you to cut it needs to hush, it’s gorgeous as is!

Matt Jones: You have great hair, Kaye; looks lovely

Ann Marie: I did enjoy your video. I still have long hair at 66! I grew my grays out 3 years ago and I have to say God gave me beautiful silver and dark natural colors. I’ve been asked if I had it done professionally! I will try your hairdo!❤

amal a: Your hair is lovely either way, as are you, Kaye.

cul de sac grocery garden: I admire you for not giving in to societal pressure and having the courage to age gracefully and being yourself! I quit coloring my hair in 2018 and started cutting it myself around the same time. like yours, my hair is soft, thin wavy and fly away but wavier and curlier. Been using the “Unicorn” method for years! Next time I will try your way and position the “horn” between my eyebrows . Once a year, in November! That way it’s long enough to put up when garden season is back upon us!

Janice Seigler: Kaye, I cut my own hair using the same technique as you. My sister has her Master's Cosmetology license and showed me the way years ago. Today, it is waist-length and straight as a board. No color for me and I have so many compliments. I don't cave to the pressure of the masses, either. Your hair is your glory.

A J: Your hair is beautiful! I wish I could grow mine long, but it's fine & thin & doesn't look full like yours. Great tutorial, love this!

RG H: Hi Kaye, I started cutting my own hair this year. I am tired of trying to find a good hair dresser, scheduling conflicts, etc. If it came out uneven I had to go back, not many of them were happy about that. You are right we must be more self reliant, so Thank you again for showing us this technique. Blessings to you.

R Hayes: You're such an interesting character. As Andy Griffith would say, you're a bird in this world :) I sure do enjoy your channel. OH - one more thing. Can't wait to hear more details about Patch and her activities. What is going on in her adventurous little brain?

2old4this: Love this video! Love your hair! Love you and “all” your videos!!

Marnina Collins: I love your long hair! It’s beautiful ❤ thank you for showing us how to cut our own hair.

Sheryl Lynn: Wow!!! You did a great job - love it!

@ACE: How brave. Thank you for sharing. I stopped coloring my hair after neck surgery and love it. My hair is short and so soft and healthy.

Peaceful Acres Farm: Omgosh that was fun! You and I have nearly the same type of hair. When mine is short, it's curly, when it's long it's most wavy and sadly in Texas it's frizzy! I started growing mine about the same time as you (from a pixie cut) but in 2020 I needed a trim so I bobbed it to my chin...curly hair is very forgiving about accuracy. Now it's just about to the middle of my back...the longest it's ever been. I'm 64 and I love it...although I don't ever wear it down and keep playing with messy buns. I'm 80% grey and love that too, although in the summer I'm convinced it's blonde. BTW that is an absolutely gorgeous picture of you from your much younger years. You have aged gracefully and are still beautiful. ❤️

Cbass: I use the same shears to cut mine. As long as their sharp it works for me. I bought texturizing shears to finish the job. I’m happy you cut your hair too. It’s very pretty, but the ends were straggly and that ages you. Nice job Kaye. It’s healthy to cut a few inches of hair off now and then. I’m no beautician, but my hair is healthy Bc I keep it trimmed

Cami Richardson: I had "shelter in place, Quarantine" hair that grew really long in 2/3 years. It bothered me so much during gardening and even sleeping. I got it caught in the car door one day as well. This past summer I ended up getting it cut in layers and colored. It cost me $260!!! It's uneven and extra dry now. They just ruined my hair for a real pretty penny! So, I'm back at square one growing my hair out and letting it go gray (white actually). I wish I had known how to do my own hair or at least asked one of my daughter to trim it.

Learn To Grow: Love your hair! Beautiful

david knudson: Thanks so much for sharing that with us Kaye! No wonder you're so beautiful, that pic of you when you were younger is stunning! I wear my hair longer than most men here, but I am not the only pony tail walking around. As soon as I was out of boot camp I let my hair grow within reason for the military. Once out of the military I let it go. As I've gotten older, a 10" pony tail is enough. I learned a lot from your tutorial on hair cutting! Bless you Kaye, have a great day! Can't wait to see you in your next video.

Ramblin' Rose Cottage: I haven't been to the salon since Feb 2020. I cut my hair almost the same way. It's weird. I was brushing my hair this morning while getting ready for work and thought that I needed to make an appointment with myself to get my haircut, and you and your beautiful long hair popped into my mind, and I wondered if you also cut your own hair. And then I see this video on my lunch hour. We have some mental telepathy going on between us today. lol.

Cindy LoGuirato: I love this video Kaye. I have been cutting my own hair for last few years too but this is wonderful information to have a better cut from what I am originally doing. Thank you so much. Blessings, Cindy

Farm Girl Prepper: Another great video Kaye! Gorgeous head shot of you! I’m a fan of long hair also because of gardening season and pulling it back into a ponytail…I have to keep it away from my face! I’ve been staying away from salons as they try to cut, process, color, $$$. No thanks! Love the olive oil idea! My hair is the same way… fine, wavy, fly away & going grey.

Mary: Hi Kaye, you long hair is beautiful, just a little trim only, love that color you have when is wet!

Abigail Dill: Hi, thanks for sharing how to cut our hairs, ourselves. I will try the Farrah’s style. Maybe you could be brave enough to do it here again! Thanks

Anita Roy: I started “frosting” my own hair w/ Clairol Frost & Tip and you might remember me doing it in the dorm @UT Martin with several of our Zeta sisters. I finally began getting my own natural grey highlights and my beautician encouraged me to stop the Clairol. Like getting you inside for a different type of video ✂️

Becky Page: Well, that was fun. Been whacking on my hair for years. I haven’t decided about the color of my hair, natural gray or color How’s Patch? Take care

Sandy Maynard: Mine is past my waist, my youngest daughter is after me to cut it. You did a good job. You are beautiful

Jeanna Maynard: I've always wondered how people cut their own hair. I'm glad you let it grow so long and maintain it so natural. It makes sense to know how to be self-sustaining with everything, even hair cutting and styling. I had to resort to a shorter layered style when I got older because it became painful to move my arms up above and behind my head and my hands become arthritic. If I had seen this video then, I might could have kept longer hair.

Mourning Glory: Wow, people need to mind their own business. I am 60 and letting my hair grow to my waist. If someone has a problem with that they can turn their head the other way. I am glad that you did not cut your hair short. It is beautiful, Kaye! Thanks for the hair care tips.

Jess Kan: If my hair would look as beautiful like that on me I would let mine grow long.

T Black: ☺️☺️ We're SO MUCH alike!! I'd colored my hair for a couple of decades but once I quit driving truck decided to let it grow out and see what my grey looked like. I've got extremely thick wavy hair and had let it grow to the tops of my thighs. Well it just got to be too heavy for me to wash and since it was long enough that I'd be cutting all the color out of it without it being extremely short I got it cut. I'm in love with the fact that, like my Grandmother, my hair is turning white not grey...just wish it would turn a lil bit quicker

Darlene Wilson: Looks good Kaye. Pretty on you to. Good job! Thanks for the video.

Patricia Clarkson: I've been cutting my own hair for years. I flip my head upside down, pull all my hair straight from the top of my head and pull in front of my face and carefully cut (hard to explain). The back willl be quite a bit longer this way. Sometimes I pull it around to the front like you did, hold both sides together and cut both sections at the same time so that they are even.

BlissfulHeartsFarm1: I love your hair❤️ i cut my own as well.

Debby Archibald: Oh Kaye..I love your hair! I have been growing my hair. I'm glad your just trimming it.

Juli Martin: We really should have been sisters. Wow, your hair really grows fast! Thanks for… well, for just being you… and sharing your life, memories, and adventures with us. Love, appreciation, and blessings from East TX.☺️

Kay Jones: Great video, Kaye. Thanks for sharing how you wrap your hair up. I will cut my own hair next time. I had my hair trimmed several months ago by a professional. I am growing out my hair more now, and breaking the societal law of older women having short hair. I am 70 and a non-conformist. Your Michigan friend, K (Kay)

Susan Anderson: I cut it once, one day then the rest of the week, every day , I trim a lil here, a lil there until it's exactly what I like

TheLindadb: Don't we all love visiting with you, Kaye??!!

Caramelo's Recipes: Your hair is so beautiful!

sonie whitten: loved the video.!!! and your hair is beautiful !!! leave it long.

Garden Tour // Auf Tour im Garten: Your long hair suits you very well and it looks great I've decided to let it grow as well just to see how long it gets.

Sharon Giles: You were then and still are now gorgeous!!!’

GrandmaOfThree: I had Farrah hair years ago but held it straight up and cut it straight across. Very simple! ☺️

Connie Mcgehee: Very fun, informative video I have always paid someone else to cut My hair I have a friend that helps with the highlights

Gigi62: I haven't cut mine since we moved (2019). It's about as long as yours. I have also been trying to let all the color grow out. Hard to find a place to get it done in a rural setting (not that I want to spend the money anyway and been coloring it myself for years). Bangs drive me crazy too but I look hideous without them. I love that you shared this with us. You are beautiful inside and out and I love your long hair!

Flower power: Oh my gosh. You have beautiful hair and it’s 100% your decision. I wish I’d have cut my own , I recently got a too short haircut . The lady has been cutting my hair for thirty years. I don’t know what happened this time but at least I know hair grows .

ytb40: Love the long hair! Thank God it is still long after the cut :) :=)

Patch of Heaven: You are woman of many talents. Good job!

Wisdom of the matriarch: Absolutely love the pic of you in short hair. I've heard it said that as a woman ages, she should go shorter and lighter. Of course it really is personal preference.

Rachel rocha: I love your long hair.i cut 10inces bc it just got in the way ..I do miss it ,have fun and thanks!

Texas girl: My hair is below my behind. I'm 65 and have no color on my hair it's mostly gray with darker underneath. I've never had more compliments on my hair than I have had since I let it grow very long, compliments from both men, woman and little girls who call me princess Elsa from frozen when I have it braided. I do trim with scissors also.

Trish H: I've been cutting my hair for yrs, & bc it was light to begin with, white coming in isn't as obvious. I've had older women say it s/b shorter as you age, & I disagree. I've always had long hair, except during/after 6mos of chemo 4yrs ago. I was miserable waiting for it to come back! It grew in thicker, so there was a bright side to having lost it! Your hair is beautiful, Kaye! It's flattering, & looks great up or down:)

Robin Norcross: Love, love, love this video!

Cajun Living: I like that hair length. I myself am about to retire march of next year so I started to grow my hair out like I had back in the 60's and 70's and part of the 80's. For some reason I thought engineers needed to have short hair in the 80's. Do ask me why, as you all know an engineer is not the smartest person in the room unless we are in the room by ourselves. My wife is already calling me an old hippy, and she might be right, it just might be my younger self coming back out. I hate to say it, but I find myself driving around with the windows down just to fell my hair blowing around in my face like it would in my younger days and back then it wasn't by choice it's because cars didn't have AC.

Susan Anderson: I've been cutting my own hair because I got tired of crying after any salon person cut it too short or determined I should not have a middle part etc.

Millie MR Robinson: You're such a lovely lady, I enjoy your channel very much!

Deborah Strickland: I love it!❤️

Sheril Carey: Wow. I had thought maybe it couldn't be done well enough. But times being tough I'd been wondering. Thanks for showing me. I have long hair somewhat similar to yours. I bet I have more than 4 inches that is all different length endings and split ends right now.

Charlene Boyd: Your hair is beautiful. Don't ever cut it short. It looks so healthy.

charmaine gordon: My hair type is fine and fly away and most hairdressers don't take this into account. So, for the past 4 years I've done 'whatever' to it myself. Actually, I used to be a hairdresser, so I should be able to do 'whatever' to it, shouldn't I. I cut it, but I also perm it, as it's dead straight and lies flat against my head which doesn't suit me at all. My hair is a couple of inches over my shoulders, so the perming is challenging ..... but worth it. As an ex hairdresser, I found your technique pretty impressive. That last one showed, about combing forward and holding at the pineal gland .... I haven't seen or tried that before. One day, when I'm feeling brave, I'll have a go.

Cindy McDaniel: I'm 59 years old, no gray hair (yet), with mid back length hair parted down the middle and wear it in a pony tail. I have zero intention of cutting it just because I'm told that I'm too old for this style.

Erica Smith: I've always wondered how people get the nerve to tell people to cut their hair. Perhaps a spouse but beyond that, no. My beautiful thick blonde hair is tailbone length and I get stopped by strangers all the time telling me it's beautiful and NOT to cut it! The only people that have said it's time I cut it have been coworkers who have thin, short, stringy hair. Jealous much! Once it goes grey I will rock a long thick braid in my garden and look like a beautiful garden sprite. Long hair rocks!

Holly Winsman: For our changing times Kaye, we need the long hair now. What did the Indians say about their hair? It's great long, trim every once and a while, not short. Also, when you are out look at all the women with long hair.

Cedar Rock Cabin: After growing up with a dad that would not allow us girls to cut our hair; then asking my first husband how I looked one day after getting a new outfit & him responding, 'I don't know. It's just that nothing ever looks right on you', I wear what I want, when I want, if I want and that includes how I wear my hair. I've since lost my hair twice due to chemo and 6 weeks upon completion of my first round of chemo I decided I wasn't going to cover my head anymore if I didn't feel like just so others didn't feel uncomfortable. When it starts to grow back it's pretty ratty so I kept it buzzed until all the bald spots filled in and the friz was gone. The best hairstyle for every woman is the one they are happiest with. I have medium/dk brown hair & was getting it highlighted until on day after several years of highlights I realized it had all become blond and I needed to start having low lights. I stopped coloring and highlighting it. I'm 61 and have little grey, it's still pretty dark but with sparkles as I call it.
