A trend for short hair in 1885?! And one so popular that 1/4 to 1/3 of Chicago women were choosing to shear their locks! https://youtu.be/ATZs5hwjQng

Join me in exploring the "craze" that inspired and infuriated so many. It's a story of balding, illness, death, and some very frustrated men. With a brief appearance by both Oscar Wilde and Beatrix Potter!

Suddenly, the short hair craze as they've taken to calling it is absolutely everywhere.. In fact, some articles claim that one in three or one in four Women in Chicago have this short haircut., And they also give a description along with that. That gives us a little bit of imagery saying that they look much like a prize fighter or a convict., So we can definitively say whatever. This is definitely going to be short hair, even if they're exaggerating a fair amount.. These articles also specify that it is any type of woman that you're going to see walking up and down the streets with this. That it is not just for the young for those that are the most crazy fashionable.. The question then, for us is what did it look like? Fortunately, one of the articles, they actually name, two women.. They specifically call out Ellen Terry, an actress and Miss Cleveland Grover, Cleveland's sister., Who are both very much in the media spotlight.. This gives us a pretty good idea of what we should start looking for in photographs of the 1880s

P McLaughlin: Sounds like the push back my grandmother got when she cut off her braids in the early 1920s Everything old is new again Vintage edition

Stephanie Cowans: Am looking forward to the entire video! About a year ago, I cut my shoulder length hair to pretty much how Nicole looks in the above video and I have gotten so many compliments on my new 'do and I will never go back to long hair (also, given that I'm over 60, I think shorter hair is more appropriate for me). I think back in the time period Nicole mentions, many people thought women or girls with close cropped hair was due to them having been ill (example: Beatrix Potter).

Liz B: Women are doing something? Men must have *Opinions* about it.

MizzKittyBichon: Short hair in the Victorian era? This I've got to watch!

melo wlw: i love your earrings!! also i thought they said "looking like a spider"?? and thought "thats kind of badass" but a prize fighter is kind of badass

Hannah Klein: Cool to hear that they had short hair in those days! I have short hair much like yourself and sometimes when daydreaming about historical ensembles I could make I wonder "but what do I do with my short hair?" Now I know that it can be historically accurate!

Sherwood Dogs: Oh I am looking forward to this!!! I'm a firm encourager of all cis-women to try super short hair at least once - even today it is such a common idea that feminine must mean long hair. Challenging that one stereotype can be hugely empowering, and I've seen many friends blossom in self-confidence with crops, 'hawks, and fully-shaved heads worn proudly. Highly recommend it, but best done in late spring, unless you already have a good collection of hats on hand!

ella t: YOUR current hairdo is new to me. I love it!

Martin Ahlman: My hair has been long since the 70s. A good thing for a woman, but I was not, and so far am not... People judging people for their hair must have a fetish. Or hate long haired men (I ran fast rather than fight 4 drunk idiots. Every time....). :-)

Crocifissa Vullo: I cut my hair short when I was 17 years old never grew my hair long,once you go short never go long again at least for me!!

Audrey: Nicole, your hair is adorbs!!

British Invasion Lover: Time to bob my hair again!

Lady Croft Bayonetta: long hair is crown and glory for a girl but even short hair has something to say

Caspen Black: New celebrity crush: Ellen Terry

Vanisha c:: Omgosh so nice
