Hi friends, andrew carruthers, here education, director for sam villa today, we're bringing you four important, do's and don'ts when it comes to flat ironing hair. First and foremost, let's talk about product because that's a big, don't there's certain products. You want to make sure you keep out of the hair when you're ironing and that's anything that's going to get too sticky. We'Ve definitely seen people use hair sprays before ironing and especially something that's got a lot of tack to it. It'S just going to make the iron stick and, to be honest, if there's too much dampness in the hair, which a lacquery hairspray might maintain you're going to kind of cook the hair so be careful with product selection. The one that we really recommend is the redken iron shape. 11.. The reason we recommend this is it's specifically designed as a thermal protectant, specifically designed to go on that dry, hair and very specifically, designed to have heat tools put over it. So it's not going to get sticky, it's not going to get gummy and after you spray it through and comb it your you know that there's not going to be wetness still inside of it that you're going to cook the hair strand, so products very important. The next one is the actual section itself, because what happens is a lot of times we just kind of go into arbitrary sections that we take and there's kind of two don'ts here one would be the actual section size. So if we get big thick heavy sections, let's say we're taking a big thick horizontal section like so when we take a large section like that, the challenge is: this section is too large for the heat to evenly get through the hair. So when we place the iron into the hair, what ends up happening is we're mainly just heating, the outside edges of the section, and then the inside isn't getting hot enough to be affected. So what we do to compensate is we go over this section? 10. 15 times to get it right now, what's happening after you go over it. That many times is you're kind of super heating, the outside edges and then maybe just finally getting that interior into the heat that we need it to be to let go of the tangles and to get nice and smooth. So what we do suggest is that you skinny up your sections. Smaller sections are actually going to be faster for you, because you're not going to have to go over this section multiple times to get the end result you're looking for now, the other kind of don't when it comes to ironing hair. Is we don't necessarily suggest horizontal sections and the reason for it is a horizontal section when we iron it tends to leave the hair really flat? Looking you know, people want smooth hair when they look for a flat iron, but they don't want flat hair. Usually so horizontal sections tend to make things flat. What we suggest is that you shift to more of a diagonal section and those diagonal sections. If you keep them nice and small - and actually i just barely - did that section a second ago - so we'll go one more above it when we keep them nice and small, and we work on the diagonal. Now it's very easy to get the texture we want. So we'll take that iron shape 11. We'Ll pick up. Our small diagonal section give a light, mist comb it through once and by the time i'm done combing through it's plenty dry to apply the heat, and then we work on that diagonal. When we work on a diagonal, what happens is after the hair falls? It still has a little bit of movement to it and it doesn't get so flat and lifeless some diagonal section and keep the iron on that diagonal, and it leaves us with a much nicer result now. The final one is that you have to understand that the iron seals whatever goes into it into the hair. What does that mean? So if i have a strand, that's kind of fluffy and fuzzy and this one's not overly fluffy, but you know, let's imagine that there's a lot of crinkles in that section. If i take the iron and i just kind of grab a hold of it and go down the section, what i've now done is i've sealed all those crinkles into the hair, because the iron actually doesn't do the straightening it just seals. Whatever you put into the iron, so what we suggest to avoid that is fine teeth of your comb, put the fine teeth of the comb into the section, and then you place the iron in right behind the fine teeth. Now our combs are heat resistant. So you don't have to worry about putting the iron flat against the comb and by leading with that fine teeth. What it allows us to do is to feed smooth straight hair right into the mouth of the iron that is going to give us the best result. So again make sure you're choosing the right product, nothing, that's overly tacky or wet make sure that you're using the right section size nothing too thick and, of course, that's going to depend on hair density, so you'll have to choose per client. We also suggest switching from your horizontal sections into more diagonal sections to leave some life still in the hair and then finally make sure you lead with the fine teeth of your comb, so that you're not feeding the crinkles into the iron and sealing them in. We hope those are some great do's and don'ts that'll really help you out behind the chair. Any questions or comments leave them in that little box below and we'll get right back to you. Thank you so much for watching i'm andrew caruthers education, director for samvia. You

Lisa Johnson: Why are people saying that using a mannequin is useless? He is showing techniques which should work for all hair. The results here don't matter, its about techniques. So what difference does it make if the hair is straight. Don't people at least blow dry straight prior to flat ironing if their hair isn't naturally straight? So you'd be starting with straight-ish hair, no?

Nitya Chandraa: these are the small things that nobody tells ! i saw so many people making diagonal sections but was never explained why so i always end up taking the horizontal straight sections. Thanks a lot for the video ! Also it will be great if you guys make some hair straightener tricks for shoulder length hair. I never see a proper video for it. please do it... !

Girl scout pie: I been straightening my hair since I was 15 and I just decided to freshen up my knowledge on this routine I been having from time to time my whole life and I’m glad to search up some tips it’s always great this video gave me some great refreshing tips to look forward to style my hair with a iron

hb: I really like your presentation. Patient, clear and to the point. I am not a hair dresser and have always had trouble using a flat iron.

Kassie B: I really enjoyed this video. Thank you for the tips because I didn't know and now I do. I'm not a professional hair dresser but I love learning and I will be using these techniques on myself. Thank you for all you do. Much love from Texas.

RIHeart90: Extremely helpful! I'm 27 and have had such a hard time straightening my hair since I entered my 20s. My hair is more curly now and frizzy. Never knew the straightener was just setting the waves. Also my hair ends up lifeless and flat so the diagonal sections will no doubt be helpful! Thanks

Song Byrrd: Thank you for great tips and information. Flat ironing on a diagonal I didn’t know. Very useful and a new technique for me to incorporate. Also while I used a fine tooth comb and I knew I got much straighter strands I didn’t realize the science behind what the heat is actually doing but now it makes sense because before I used a comb sealing the texture/shape of the strand is exactly what I was doing. Thanks!!

Agnes Kraiss: Man, this was so eye opening and made SO MUCH SENSE! I would always wonder why my hair still looked a little crinkly after going over it with my straightener a number of times. This was so helpful, thank you!!

GERARD.: This is a Godsend for someone who finally successfully straightened their hair today & did all those mistakes! Awesome tutorial!

Classified Information: Thank you for this video. I have been flat ironing my hair wrong for years I could never understand why I would get those ugly line creases & sometimes crispy sections. I will be changing my heat protestant spray & drastically decreasing the size of my sections. Very helpful video!

N: These tips are all really useful, especially the 'chasing a comb with flat iron'. Its pretty easy. I'll add a tip : use a small round brush instead of comb. My straightening improved a lot after using these tips (though i use 210 degrees. I naturally have semi straight hair).

Rebecca Vasquez: I just finished cosmetology school and the horizontal sectioning is something I was taught, but this is so much better. Your videos are such a blessing and a huge help for me. Thank you!

Nixon Diane: I love this instructional video, great tips. I'm not a beautician but I personally have a cap that I want to Flat Iron tomorrow & will definitely use these tips, they are simple & easy to follow .

Pattie Malarkey: Great tutorial! Love the diagonal tip as well as the comb! I always learn so much from these vids. Thanks!

RoxanneM Gonzales: I have been doing my hair wrong! Now it makes sense why certain parts of my hair weren't going the way I wanted them lol. Thanks For the tips

Vincent Balducci: Thank you for sharing! I see so many clients with iron damage its awful! the worst are the younger ones that come in and they go over the sides of their hair 15 times with the iron on 450 :(

Sarah T: This was really informative. I will definitely be trying this technique. My hair never feels like it does after I wash it a week after my salon visit.

Amanda Kay: So helpful and to the point. You are a great teacher!

JayNova: This really helped, the small sections and going diagonal was so helpful and now my hair is as straight as I wanted it to be.

Iz Chiarot: great tips! i absolutely FRIED my hair after i cut it all off to donate, i was insecure about my short hair and ended up straightening it every day... yikes! ended up having to cut it all off again! im not using heat anymore while i'm letting it grow out but i'm so excited to use these tips to straighten my hair once it's long again!

Dianne Williams: Thank you Andrew the comb tip is as good as gold. I was about to toss a flat iron I have and I tried using a comb and get awesome results and don't even need product. Also I have been cutting my own hair learning from Sam Villa videos and successfully using the flat iron helped me to clearly see a spot where I need to adjust my cut.

Lilian Carpio: Thank you for this video! As Andrew Carruthers said in one of the comments this is probably something obvious to professionals .. it was all new to me and the comments really helped me out too... I currently have a bob haircut so I have started using my flat iron more often.. thank you for the tips ..will definitely put them to use.

Angelica Facundo: I have extremely thick hair.. A LOT of hair, so sections like this are actually so tiring and I’m unsure if I even want to keep flattening my hair anymore.... but then again nothing could be worse than curling it

shantelle F: Yes! Finally someone teaches how to comb chase the hair to get the best straightening results!

Yas ♠️: So much clarity in how you speak. Great video! To the point and super clear. Thank you!

Midian Fiend: This was really useful, I'm looking forward to perfect straight hair now.

Pallu's vlog: Loved the tips. Very useful

Pratima Bhatt: Very useful. Will keep these pointers in mind for sure!

Bevan Cremer: One of my favorite tricks is use a carbon or bone comb. This helps minimise static unlike a plastic combs will... Also polishing off with a nice serum...

Katie D.: What is the best practice for flat ironing the back of your own head?

Denise Whalen: Thanks Andrew this is very helpful. I have very thick, long, coarse and curly hair and lots of grey that is colored. My curls are tight ringlets that only require a mousse to hold and I do have some long layering. I'm not happy with my straightening results still and the product that was recommended has begun to build up on my iron. Is there another product or a method I should use so that it appears smoothly without the crazy kinking from the grey? What do I do to get the residue from the product recommended by the stylus off my iron without causing damage to the plates? Because my hair is so thick I was told if I want to avoid damaging my hair badly I shouldn't wash, blow dry and use the flat iron all on the same day. What would you recommend?

Renee Edmundson: Hello: thank you for your tutorial. I have been using sulfate free and paraben free shampoo and conditioner however I am struggle with not enough moisture or hydration in my hair. I have naturally curly hair and I straighten it almost every other day. Can you suggest a good treatment or conditioner that leaves my hair nice and soft with a nice scent? Thank you

stan daddy Reigen: I straighten my hair so often I usually get lazy with it and I'll do bigger sections at a time than I should and my hair does not look amazing

NativeNYerChicHK: Sometimes I rather bigger section because I don’t want all pin straight hair, it loses volume that’s way. I really just want a bit of a quick polished look sometimes, especially if I’m short on time. So my secret to that is to do bigger sectioning for the majority underneath and then do the thinner sectioning on the top visual areas of the hair so that’s a really polished appearance but I haven’t lost all the volume in whole head of hair. If that makes sense? Also I ALWAYS only flat iron with the aid of a clamping comb (like the HerStyler) to pull it all taught while I’m dragging the straightener down my hair so no funky crimps are being ironed in. That also helps to spread the section out nicely, a very uniform straightened pass. And even if the center of my bigger sections aren’t getting direct heat, they’re still being held taught while any heat is being applied, it still helps somewhat to work some wonky waves out of that center of the bigger section. Cannot straighten without my clamping comb now, I won’t even bother trying anymore, it just never looks as good as when I use my clamping comb. The results just aren’t near the same as what I’m not used to seeing now. And because it does such a great job as an aid to straightening my hair, the style stays longer too!

Pam R: I love any video with Andrew...he explains everything so well, and demonstrates to aid with his audio...

s0ur4pplem4rtini: I do everything except the diagonal tip. I love movement so I'm going to try that next time.

Tanzina Tasneem: Awesome tips! Thanks a lot! Had a question. How can I make my iron straightened hair last longer than 20 mins? I have thick coarse dry curly hair.

Miss Hero: To be honest this very informational! I will be following all the rules!

Gitanjali Mehra: Hi Andrew... really grateful for your tips Tried doing my hair tday and definitely came out so much better than I've doing for yrs... just one more thing could you tell me how to keep them straight for a couple of days without getting a wave in the hair... thanks

Sandra Mullikiin: I really appreciate your tutorials on styling hair. It's very helpful to even the average person who's trying to figure out what they're doing wrong, etc. - re: like finding out here that using the fine tooth part of the comb in front of the iron helps get those crinkles and things out. Thank you!

Amirra Shamma: I have curly hair and this helped so much omg

Debbie Stoughton: Thank you so much. The tip on how to eliminate "crinkles" will help me with my hair tremendously.

Marybeth Gomez: Thank you so so much for those awesome tips ..I surely used to do all the opposite now I know

Sadia Iftikhar: This was really helpful ! Thank you for sharing

thegreenmanofnorwich: One of the reasons I can never be bothered is that I'm just not very good at sectioning and I get bored easily. Plus my hair kinks really quickly after using a straightener

Tanya Lawrence: So helpful tips thank you so much❤

CutAfrik Afro: Great tips there. Simple & clear

Umme Habiba Faiza: Set to speed 1.25×

Kiera Korus: Idk how 'good' of a method this is, but my hair feels/looks greasy when really straightened so I just take the parts that look weird and only do those/my bangs. It gives me kind of a natural straight (mine's thick/wavy) and less damage. Plus if you're doing this w/ his technique and you're not particularly hand/eye coordinated, it might be difficult and cause possible burns, speaking from personal experience lol. Besides, I'm lazy and can't be bothered taking an hour or two on my hair :P Another method, though probably not the most proper... flip your head upside down. Saw my gf do this when we first got together and I was fascinated o.O granted, hers is straighter than mine, but it seemed to give her a lot of volume. Again, be careful not to burn yourself lol. Happy straightening!

Dimity Louise: This was great!! Super helpful with your tips

Milian Bonillo: Fantastic tips! Loved it!!!

Dom Tamu: Simplest yet very important advice . thankyou

Dan Rivera: Very helpful, me trying to do this to my hair

Andrew Kasprick: Great job explaining i didn't know i was doing it wrong lol

Melinda Hoye: Very informative. Thank you!

Lhora Chelsea: this is very helpful, thank you so much! <3

Alexia Mora: I’ve been doing the donts‍♀️ my hair on the outside is more “dead” but inside under looks healthy and stronger probably because when I straighten ive been burning the outside more

Soldier08Yang: Thank you for the helpful tips. Will try this out!

Alison Barksdale: Learned so much!! Thank you!

Thither Shook: I love my curly hair/3b curls. Won’t flat iron it unless it’s a special occasion because straight hair to me is just to easy to take care of. I need a challenge like taking care of my curls ❣️.

M: That was helpful thank you

Lisa: I just learned a lot about how to properly flatiron. Thanks!

Helena Møller: Really helpful - thank you :D

Lynette Patrice: Thank you for these great sensible tips

Lëlikovna: never straighten your hair wet, ALWAYS IN LAYERS, USE HEAT PROTECTION and never go over 300 if you have fine hair like myself.

cara: 2:56 but that's why I'm using a straighter..to make my hair flat(my hair is naturally thick, curly and frizzy)

Amanda Martell: I have the issue of when I flat iron my hair, all the little broken pieces I have from hair loss do not smooth down with the iron. Any tips or products to help smooth them down? Sprays, pomades, round brushing.. nothing seems to help, except for tight tight tension when round brushing but it's nearly impossible to get good tension drying my own hair

kiera adele: Very informative!

Isabel morales: gracias siempre me ayudan tus consejos por ti aprendi a cortar el pelo en capas muchas gracias sige dandonos consejos te adoro Maestro

Romina Pitti: Very helpful. Thank You!!!

Esther Lee: Thank you! This is very useful and new to me

Denise Marie Johnson: I feel like this angled straightening technique is nearly impossible to do by yourself on the back of your head, especially if you have long hair

Miaraz: What do you do when you cant see the back of your head and scared of burning yourself? Because I personally don't trust myself with ironing or any heating tools on myself

chantal murray: Is there any products i can use along with heat protectant before flat ironing my hair to get a smooth and shiny finish?

Holly Anderson: I have thick wavy/ curly long hair I've always wanted strait hair now that I'm older my once tight curls are more tight waves than curly and now and I'm really missing my curls. I use to straiten my hair all the time but i ended up damaging it really bad, after 3 years of using no heat products and tons of oils, and leave in conditioners with keratin my hair has never been healthier . I just wish my hair was curly like it use to be when I was young, my daughter has poker strait hair and she wants curly Lol that's usually the way it goes, she's the one in the profile pic BTW..

TiredAsAMother: What is the best temp to straighten your hair? For thick hair... for thin hair... for fine hair... for coarse hair?

Elite: Can you create videos on how to style weak, thin/thinning, damaged hair? I want thick long bouncy hair, but I don't have enough hair.

Kparso01: I kind of wish they would've used a curlier haired teaching head because it would've made more sense instead of a straight haired one. However other than that this was a great video! I straighten my hair a lot and it helps to know what I shouldn't do. I love my long hair and don't want to have to sheer it off because of damage.

Europe Persia: Great tips! Thanks

Gillian Wills: The angled sections tip is genius. Thank you! xXx

Solveig Freeman: Looks really great when you do it with two hands standing over the head. What about a person who uses this iron on her own head? Can you give me an idea of what to do to my own hair. Not easy to have the iron in one hand and the hair strand in the other looking into the mirror. I just got the iron and now I am scared to death to use it on myself. Help!
