So 80's hair really is an important it's a really important decade in artistic expression when it comes to hair thanks for coming to my ted talk, but it is true welcome back to our gorgeous channel honey and today we're going to be playing a stunning game of, Should it stay or should it go, except for should it come back, but with 80s hairstyles you know what i'm saying i was born in 1987.. I don't even know that much about these hairstyles we went through so much in the 80s. We were dealing with a lot. What were we dealing with in the 80s like hiv aids epidemic, the reagan presidency perms? All this look at how people were expressing themselves. They were just devastated. Look at this lady honey! Look at this guy and we were just going through it like it was fun, but it was like trauma. It was a major trauma response time of hair. Our first look is the mullet. Well, i don't know about the hairstyle, but can we talk about the man honey? Is he not flying look at this jawbone and the stash? Is he like a former like soccer player for some team, argentina, maybe argentina? I would say, as far as the the permed texture that cannot come back, but the haircut itself, like with a different texture, could be kind of sexy. I think it stays. No, it comes it go. It goes back to the present because if it stays isn't it going to stay in the 80s, it can stay and come back in 2022. yeah. I can come back in 22.. You can come back and change it. The tall mohawk ooh. First of all. Why am i attracted to all of these models, and i feel like this guy is probably like about to kiss another guy right here. Don'T you think it's all man yeah, oh gorgeous gay men yeah, i think so and yeah. I love this mohawk though it's absolutely stunning, it's giving me egg yolk gel, it's giving me a firm hold. I like it. It'S punk, it's mysterious. It'S phallic! It'S it's! Coming back in 2010, it's coming back in 2022.. It'S like 30 minutes later, it's no! I'M experiencing lower back pain on account of my chest, got a strap back. You know! No, you don't know my actually my lower back's, fine, it's good yeah just kidding we're aging. Yes, 80s babies. I just can't believe that i'm the age that carrie bradshaw was when they went to el cantonore when all of her friends forgot about her 35th birthday and then that other girl got her 25th birthday cake and she was like i'm old, i'm old and then carrie Was like, oh, my god, i'm so upset and then the lady was like you have to pay for the table and then she had to walk home with a cake and she dropped it. It was so upset and then fast forward, 25 years and big drops dead off the peloton. Okay flat tops okay wow. This is a lot, but it's a lot in a good way. I'M saying it can come back. I don't know why, but i feel like yeah, why not okay come on back um. I don't know why. But i have the baby back. Rib song stuck in my head. Can we sing it? Oh yeah, i want my baby yeah, but you have to do the beginning a little better. That was good. No, it was not really what i was looking for as the choir director. You really got like lean. How would my fractured baby back baby? You can still sing you can project a little bit even with a fractured rib. You know what i'm saying you did, but i feel like i saw you dancing on your insta stories yeah, so you can dance with your broken rib on your insta stories that we can't get sing fractured rib. The doctor i saw was the woman sitting next to me on the plane. Really, are you what no you felt my ribs and she checked my pulse in the airplane on the plane, but she said it'll grow back together. Ah, the bones do miraculous things. She said. Yes, meanwhile, she's, like literally a truck driver and not a doctor at all, and, like literally like diagnosed, you with like she's like never been to medical school before big hair. Well, this is a yes that is like this is very big hair. I feel like it's wider than her shoulders. This is like very big i'm here, for it get it big, get it loud, get it proud, tina turner 80s, such icon, 80s icon yeah. I loved her look yeah yeah, i loved what love got to do with the music video. I also loved delia before time in the 80s about the disney movie with the dinosaurs yeah. I also loved katarina bit uh battle of the carmen's 1988 olympics interesting interesting time. Brian boytano, he won golden 88 scott hamilton in 84, obviously um yeah, 80s big time high top fades ooh. Yes, i love we're saying yes, i'm saying yes to the barber, i'm saying yes to the dress, i'm saying yes to all of it. Really cute love obsessed. I do feel like the 80s gave us a new understanding of like texture and body techniques that were popularized during the 80s. We still see in contemporary hair, just like used in different ways. So 80s hair really is an important deck. It'S a really important decade in artistic expression when it comes to hair thanks for coming to my ted talk, but it is true perm and oh yes, but no, i'm gon na say this can stay. So this is like a different era. Obviously, dolly's got a wig on. I wonder who else is a wig but yeah? No, it should stay. It should stay back where it was. I just so much breakage. So much hair fragility, no can't come back. I had to do perms in beauty school. It wasn't fun, it wasn't easy. I [ __ ] them up. If you got the solution on your fingers and didn't have gloves on it just like taste, you could like taste it forever like eating chips. You could taste perm solutions like very gross. It'S the initial perm, isn't what's so bad, it's the retouching it it's like the doing the roots later sucks, it's so tedious, and it's just as awful, and i hate it. My song for my cat matilda that we made up is you are the love of my life, you're, so perfect and cute in every single way. You know that it's true, but for perming, it's like i hate perming. So much later i realized guess what song we ripped it off of accidentally. You are the love of my life run. Just as fast as i can. I didn't know it yeah. I didn't know for days. I was like. I didn't know that i'd ripped it off of pink, but it's a really cute song for matilda pink, oh yeah. I love that song. I love pink yeah. That was a really good album misunderstood. I love her hip bones. I don't know where you're going there, but it's that perfect, like those hip bones like that, muscley hip bones, yes, honey she's got these like that v she's got like that v she's, red yeah. I love her. I also loved it when she like told those australian paparazzi to [ __ ] off when she was sick, she's gon na do the best. I can okay, it's our final look. It is called the whale spout. Oh well, i'm wearing this right. Now. It'S not different! This is like me right now, except should we cut this fringe on me? I get. I want some choppy teeny baby fringe. I call this like a whisper of a fringe because it's just like a whisper. You know look at how she's got like this like little fringe over on the side. Oh my god, yeah i mean. Obviously this comes back and we have matching hairstyles. I can't tell she's got something in her teeth or if her teeth are just yellow back there. Let me see, i think, they're just yellow, because we didn't have all that white, giving me something it's giving me like. I had like it's like. I had like apple jacks and didn't brush my teeth or something. Thank you. So much for the youtube channel. Like comment subscribe, tell your mom tell everybody get a perm get into it. Yeah you

Theresa Sestina: Jonathan, please! Just fess up and let everybody know our secret, as hairdressers, every hairstyle comes back 20 years later lol it's just another cycle like fashion. We need a generation that will change the ruts we have dug, into a nice green pasture of youthful looks that will fit any age!

Chas Ellenburg: Jonathan finding all of the 80’s models hot and mentioning that first and discussing their hairstyles second is the sort of content I come to this channel for.

h3rbst_ schm3rz: I'm a simple nb - I see Jonathan, I click. Also! I am absolutely LIVING for Jared and JVN's banter energy! Is it the miracle of childbirth, honey, because honestly it's giving me so much life , I can't

venus22118: So funny - 'The 80s was a major trauma response time for hair' I totally agree

Angela Glaros: My mom got a perm in the 80s and with her already naturally curly hair, she came out with a literal Afro. I both hate and love that memory for complicated reasons.

Stephanie Brock: Love how you found something positive about all of the hairstyles - even the craziest ones hahaha not sure I would have been so nice ps: I finally managed to get my hands on your hairproducts - found a store which ships them to Switzerland so excited for them to arrive

Kiki Gilmer: I love how you take in the whole picture and not just the part you're "supposed" to look at. I do that when watching tv or movies and it drives my family nuts when I'm like: "did you see that guy in the background?!" And they're like, "no, why are you looking at that?" Love you, Jonathan!! Thank you for bringing back all the fun stuff, lol!! ❤

Gina V.: LOVEEEE my curls... not a trend when you're natural!! woot woot I always say God gave me my perm haha

Glitter Fallout: There's still a part of me that will always envy the perm + teased look. Pretty pumped that I finally figured out how to use a diffuser and bring out my natural curls and volume instead. VOILA - instant 80s groupie hair.

Charles Alwyn: I loved the 80s…I remember going to the salon with my mom and seeing all the big hair…so much hair spray and perms…it was amazing…what a time!

Gold Crow: I am an ‘81 baby. I went through it all: curled and teased bangs, side ponytail, crimped hair…lord have mercy. Also, I have dated a handful of boys with mullets or rat tails. The 80’s were such a weird and confusing time for makeup and fashion. Hahaha Thanks for the flashback, you beautiful ray of sunshine, you. ✨

Yovla Nancy: You’re such an amazing role model and I finish watching Getting Curious on Netflix it is great. Thanks JVN ❤️

English Absorbed: Hey JVN You're the best and I'm glad and proud to be alive at the same time as you. And I love 80s hair.

jessica feeney: It’s the accidentally eating perm solution for me ugh the last perm I ever got was at the hair cuttery in 91. The woman who permed my hair burnt the fuck out of it and I had to cut it into a Bob. God why did anyone ever do that to their hair ‍♀️

Dawn Rowe: I was a hairdresser back then. 80s hair was so much fun to do.

I'm- SQUIRREL: I also think Tina Turner could still rock her 80’s look. What I love about the 80’s is that there wasn’t a mono look for the decade. Rob Halford of Judas Priest could also resurrect his 80’s garb and still look modern. Fun video

Trippy Erin: Oh, the hours I spent in the 80’s drying my overly-hair sprayed hair with a blow dryer upside-down!

Erin Mullen: You look stunning in that color! Just got my deep moisture mask and scalp oil in the mail yesterday and I'm so excited to try them!

Nancy Gall: I have wavy voluminous hair and I’ve been waiting my whole life for it to become a trend again I’m a March of 87 baby too!

Rosani Lebron: 80s hair was freedom! I was in my teens in the 80s and pop culture was fun, not politics or economics that were terrible and confusing. The 80s are so iconic, they have a life of their own. It's a decade that hasn't been easy to replicate, because it was in the moment. Love the 80s!!!

Shelly Konecny: I loved 80's hair!! Big hair, shoulder pads, and tucking our jeans into our socks!

Laura Schafer: My favorite video yet! Passionate and hilarious all at the same time.

Jennifer Loher: I love how you convinced me to like everything you liked in these styles

Project Beauty: I just resonate with your 80's and 90's notes! Any time you talk figure skating, sister act, land before time, etc... You speak to my soul lol. Love it. Thank you for keeping things alive!

Andrea Goble: When I wanted to color my hair way back when my hair stylist had an intervention with me. She said ok if you want to color your hair that's fine but you will kill your hair if you prrm too, so I had to decide. Color won and I have made peace with my straight hair. Lol

Bitchen Boutique: Honey the summer 1984 Olympic torch went RIGHT BY MY HOUSE on its way to LA and I will never forget how exciting that was!!! And my hair was so cute in 84… curly short bob with a long rat-tail coming from behind my right ear that I’d braid ribbons into like a single little Boy George moment. And then we moved to a tiny town in Texas and I was like SUCH A WEIRDO FREAK.

Rose Sarah: i was born in 82 and i literally begged my mom to get a perm. but, my hair was super straight then and became naturally wavy in my mid 20’s. who knew?! i love you JVN ♥️

M. E.: Scott Hamilton, high top fades, hair health, P!nk, whalesprout . You’re an entire mood. I’m here. For. It

Resha Lynn: You make my day every time I watch your videos thank you!!!

Kacey Jane: Can you do a full hair Q&A ! Like best ingredients/ brands to look out for in products that you don’t carry in jvn hair , tips for hair loss etc !! Thank you for all you do ! Your amazing love your videos :)

Stephanie Long Clark: Speaking of the 80's, that's not a whisper of fringe, it's a Careless Whisper...I'll see myself out. Thank you.

Denise S: I’m old enough to be your mother. Love your channel your content your personality your huge heart etc! You’re such an amazing person Jonathon.

Genn C: Jonathan you beautiful soul. I love these video's keep them up! You seem as though you're going through something. Hope you're doing well <3

blueboxblues: my mom has worked at a salon since I was in kindergarten and the first time I walked in there someone was getting a perm - I can still remember the smell 30+ years later

Rhi41: I have very curly hair and I wanted a perm in the 80s thank god my mom said no!

yesmissjane: I was a teenager in the 80s, and I say NO THANKYOU to the perm in any iteration.

Lila Delilah: I am so ready for mohawks and flat tops to return. Iconic ✨

Morganne Wood: I was born in 87 too! My first big hair experience was a perm and they permed my blunt short bangs

Marly m: I can’t express in words how much I love JVN

Talimav00: "It was like fun, but it was like trauma." OMG I needed this laugh!

Verse Apocalyptica: Damn, Jared could get it with that ski dance, tho! Also, Thank you for loving Katerina Witt with me—that’s the skater that got me interested in the sport!

Patty Valdivia: Loveeee the high half pony!!! Looking cute as always…. I would definitely the whale spout to come back… Yaaasss Girl work it❤️❤️❤️❤️

Tammy Scott: I feel so old!! I graduated high school in 1987. ‍♀️ We did have some hair. It was kinda the good, the bad and the ugly the hair styles went a long with our music. We had the punk, big hair metal bands and the rock a billy country bands. Oh and the women of music like Cher, Madonna, Dolly and Tina.

Amy Dansie: You are adorable! I was in high school in the early 80’s - the best! I loved all of these hairstyles then and would love to see a lot of them come back. #thehigherthebangstheclosertoheaven

Anna Buhler: Just had to say that I love your laughing smile at 4:22... Beautiful :)

TheCratsky: When I think about 80s hair, I think about the times my sister and I would crimp our hair and wear a brightly coloured scrunchie with hair clips.

Skyd0g: Aw i was hoping he'd hold up Flock of Seagulls lead singer's hairdo lol. I'm curious what JVN thinks of that hairdo! I Actually really like it. Ballsy and fun!

Ella Ocean: The whole 80s era is my SPIRIT ANIMAL coz THE ANDROGYNY HUNNY!!!

A M: As a 77 baby I dealt with to many 80s cuts to be traumatized from ever wanting to see them again. had a mullet for sure and also the whole short haircut with a long string of hair in the back like if you had a ponytail that when super thin. Mohawk yes done that too

Ella Ocean: I so want for the 80s everything era to comeback...so that when I walk out with HOT PINK, VIOLET AND RED blush ppl wont call me a clown but SICKENINGGG!!!

Louise Belcher: I love Mohawks. I feel like it says that that person can commit, and I really like that in a guy.

Nartarlyia Tremaynne: Johnathan my Mummy had big hair. Shares in hairspray companies. We buried her with her teasing combs and 15 cans of hairspray in case they are rationed in heaven. Jonathan the Universe was showing off when you were made. Kind deeds change Lives so do Hair Stylists. Australia.

Rebecca Fenaughty: Yeeeees! I am bringing the big hair back, but it's a pixie grown out but not a Mixie. I am stoked, now which hairspray are we supposed to use now?

nothing works works: Hairspray will never come back, but I love giant hair. Our whole family loved Charo...so there ya go

The Odd Fox: Hey Johnathan! Thank you so much for everything you have done, You have given me the confidence to tell the girl I love how much she means to me

Maria Schonfeld: I think about that SATC moment all the time too!!! It's burned into my memory- glad I'm not the only one... I'm 38 now though

sara warren: Love this. f Just have to say that a fracture is the same as a break! Sorry I had to say it tho... I love you Jonathan!!!!

Title by Artist: Some of those are definitely photoshopped but I WANT them to be real.

Dawn Rowe: Us hairdressers single handedly destroyed the ozone with all the Aqua Net. Lolol

Claire Butcher: "Get it big, get it loud, get it proud" ❤

Libby Hardel: I'm old and was a teen in the 80z and never once saw anyone have hair that big never, ever, ever. Those had to be photoshopped.

Fernando Robles: "Should we cut this fringe on me? Fuck it!" Laughing. The 80's were quite the hodge podge of style.

K V: Yessss I caught the Doja cat “get into it YUH” at the end!

Holly Manchester: Love the jumper. Such a happy colour. And the video. X

Linda Carol: I make up songs for my dogs all the time, so love that!

Therese: Broken = fractured. Not every broken bone is a fracture, but ALL fractures are broken bones lol Hearing someone say "it's not broken, it's fractured" is always so amusing!

Shaina Ann: My father had a pretty intense mullet back in the day. I pray he never does it again honestly haha

Amy B: Arh Land before time 1980 baby, remember my spiral perm and puff ball skirt. We're all so boring these days!

Sarah Gianetto: I’ve been hashtagging BigBackBigBangs for, like, a decade now… Not, like, the ones you covered in the 90’s hair… but, like, the rad New Wave 80’s kind. And we *were* dealing with a lot!

Natalie Ciocca: You = love and joy. Period!!!!!!!! ❤️

Alessandra Santos: jonathan is so good, beacuse just one way is ok, the others is like...a big no!

Catching Horses: You’re like a ray of sunshine!

Soniqua: I could watch him forever...so delightful

Jenifer Stewart: I’m so jealous of Patty in this video! I wanna be your turtleneck fluffer!

9FiveB: Can I just say....... "You've gotta help me figure out what to do with my mop!" Please J-Ness! Clean my Kitchen, and grease the scalp. But seriously though. I will fly in from Colorado when, and wherever. With a baby Egyptian Mao for Y-O-U if it helps. I mean it.

April Sisco: The mullet is making a strong comeback though

Maddie Beck: I said yes to the dress last weekend!! Do you want to come to my wedding in November lol

Peggy Garberick: I hated the 80's mostly because I lost friends to AIDS, had a stupid Barbra Streisand perm in my hair and oh yeah, I got married.

RayoomTa KWT: Jonathan, You know how much I love you ? Get this I’m a 33 years old Arab trans woman from the Middle East, I have an extremely homophobic cousin who’s a police officer - How convenient ;@ - HE IS THE WORST SINCE WE WERE KIDS the best thing about him is that he look like your identical twin with short hair... NO I AM SERIOUS THE STRIKING RESEMBLANCE IS BEYOND MY DESCRIPTION ! The beautiful squinty eyes, the thick brown beard, the body shape - Yes hunny she’s THIQUE- even the jawline !.... because of you I managed to overcome my hatred for him. Before I fell in love with your public persona & deeply respect your journey I couldn’t even tolerate sitting around him in our weekly family dinner... Now when I look at him I remember you and I feel instantly happier... From Kuwait with luv, Reem

Jonathan Van Ness: I want to know: what videos do we want for the channel?

Shelbi: I’ve never been this early to anything. I love you queen.

Victoria Marx: Tips for a stellar Mohawk, use egg whites or Knox gelatin to spike it, both will make that hawk hard as cement

Juta Stokes: As a teen in the 80s I called my whale spout a palm tree.
