Hi everybody. My name is Dhiran Mistry and I work at the John Barrett Salon. And today I’m here with Andrea. We’re going to show you how to turn a ponytail into a messy updo.

So as you can see, we’ve already done the ponytail, just a simple pony. And we just wrapped the hair around, just to cover up the elastic. So what I’m actually going to do is take some really small sections of the ponytail, and then just tease them. And you can go kind of crazy on this. It doesn’t need to be perfect. The messier this becomes, the easier it is to pin the hair up afterwards. So if you just tease the hair all the way down to the ends and we’re going to keep doing this until we’ve done the entire ponytail.

So just hold the hair by the ends and just push gently down on the hair until you’ve gone all the way to the end of it. As you can see, depending on how much hair you have on your head, you can really get some good volume of this. So just keep teasing all the way to the end.

If you don’t have as much hair in the ponytail, don’t worry about it. Just tease what you can and add some hairspray. Today, with Andrea’s hair, I’m not going to put in hairspray, because she obviously has a lot of hair to play with, so that would create a much bigger mess on the hair, which is kind of cool. This is a really easy way of doing your own hair.

Once you’ve created your volume and your mess, you want it to look like a bird’s nest, because what you’re then going to do is grab some small pins like this, and then taking pieces of hair, just tuck them in and pop them into the hair like that. The hair that’s pulled back already will act as the base. And what you want to do is just tuck these pins into the scalp, just holding the hair in place, and then just work around the hair, picking up pieces of hair and just popping them in to the base of that ponytail.

So what you’re going to do is just keep picking up small sections and just pinning them wherever you feel that you feel necessary just to create the right shape. And don’t worry if there’s pieces hanging out, because this is a messy updo. So you don’t want it to be perfect. The messier it is, the better it looks.

Okay, there you have it. You have a really messy updo.

Jerrene W.: Very cool he makes it effortless. I love having others do my hair.

Angela Russell: I just tried it and it is a little harder than he effortlessly makes it look, and it is going to be a pain to find all the pins but it looks great and it does stay in

Michelle Therese: Well then, all I need to do is pin my hair up as soon as I get out of bed!

G S: That's how I look whether I like it or not. I have to flat iron. But, I have a new respect for my significant voluminous hair after seeing this video.

Truly Trinity: For a messy up do this takes a lot of work I tried to do and got just flat hair

Clan Reid: I love it!

star: Uhm...maybe instead of teasing try curling and maybe crimping small pieces. That would make it look alot more like elegant messy updo then a uhm frizzy mess.

Aparna Chakraborty: Beautiful

Emma Lee: I just don't like this!!! Can you imagine trying to brush your hair afterwards??!! It would be sooo tangly.

Tahseen Z. Ahmed: looks gross. all that teasing doesn't make it look decently messy, it's just a frizzy mess. too many usage of pins and the end result is nothing.

SinkVenice: Woah there back combing. Brushing that out is going to be really painful.

Corinne Dautarribe: J'adore
