Winter Product Guide - 3 Hair Products You Need This Winter

Winter Natural HairWinter is coming! Slowly but surely, the leaves are falling from our trees and the weather is getting colder. With the harsh winds that are getting progressively worse, it’s time for us to make sure that we have the products we need in our stash to keep our hair feeling and looking it’s best. Below are three products that you absolutely need this season. Comment below with your winter must haves!

Moisturizing Deep Conditioner*

The cold and dry winds that are coming our way can really make a mess of our hair. To keep or restore moisture, make sure to implement a good deep conditioning* session to your regimen weekly. There are many deep conditioners out there, but look for something water based, thick, and creamy. Some of our favorites are:

  • Shea Radiance Keratin Deep Conditioning Mask
  • Shea Moisture JBCO Treatment Masque

Heavier Oils

Itchy scalp? No problem. It’s important to make sure that your scalp and ends are thoroughly sealed with a heavy oil. Some naturals may deal with dry scalp in colder weather, while others may struggle with split ends after their hair comes into contact with harsh materials from our scarves, sweaters, or coats.

While coconut oil* is a popular oil in the summer, it does turn into a solid in the colder months, and some complain that it solidifies in their hair and creates flakes.

Instead, opt for a heavier oil like castor oil* to help lock moisture into your tresses. If you’re a fine hair natural like myself, you have two options to apply castor oil*. Either mix it with a lighter oil to lessen the thick consistency, or apply it to your hair when it is soaking wet and allow it to dry.

Heavy Butters

To truly ensure that you retain moisture in your hair, use a heavy butter or cream after washing. The winter is a great time to experiment with the LCO (Liquid, Cream, Oil) method. You can use pure shea butter*, a shea butter* mix, or one of many pre-made butters that can be found in the store. Our current personal favorites are:

  • Shea Radiance Moisture Rich Hair Butter
  • Karen’s Body Beautiful Butter Love
  • DIY Whipped Shea Butter

Once you figure out your hair regimen for the upcoming season, adding these products will only make your experience better. What are some of your favorite products for cold weather?
