5 Reasons Curlformers Are Bae

I wrote a post several months ago, detailing my concerns about entering the workforce and rocking my fierce, bold ‘fro. I had just discovered updo’s and felt a lot better about my hair not being the center of attention every time I walked into the room. (Though, let’s face it, no matter how I wear my hair, it always catches eyes.)

Anyway, I got to the point where I missed my curls and I didn’t want to keep hiding them. I felt like I wasn’t being true to myself. Yet, I wanted a sleeker look without having to use heat. Enter curlformers.

I had the product for about two years already, but they just were lying under my bathroom sink, taking up space. I didn’t realize their value! I don’t know what made me try it one day. Oh yeah, it was the blizzard of 2016 where I was stuck in my apartment for several days! Funny how these things happen.

Now, I’ll be the first to tell you that I use the bootleg version. The name brand curlformers cost more than what I was willing to pay, especially since I needed two full packs. Mine are from Amazon and cost a fraction of the price (though I’m not sure if this version is still available online.)

Regardless if you can find a cheaper version or not, I would say that this product is definitely worth the investment. Here are my top reasons why curlformers are bae:

1. Uniformity

Many of you ladies are blessed to have mastered flexirods*, but I’ll admit that is one of my least-skilled hair techniques. With all of the shapes, sizes and colors, it’s hard for all of my curls to be on the same page when I use flexirods*. Besides, they never stay in my hair properly and the ends always look janky.

With curlformers*, however, there is a sure process of how to install them. Once you get the hang of it, it’s a piece of cake! You just slide that sucker up the rod and ta-da! The curl is locked in place.

2. Sleekness

Is this a word? Well, it is today! Several women have come up to me and have assumed that I used heat to achieve my style. The curls are more lengthened than when I bantu-knot them and they’re a lot bigger. They also actually lie down instead of sticking up all over the place!

Part of this magical experience could be the fact that I use ORS Olive Oil* Wrap Mousse to set the style, so, you might want to pick that up, too, but I still like to attribute the sleekness to the curlformers* themselves.

curl formers3. Stretched-out-ness

Now this one definitely isn’t a word, but you get the picture. You can actually adjust the curlformers according to how tight or loose you want your curls to be. They’re like springs! If you lengthen the applicators all the way out, it’s a nice way to stretch your hair before styling it in some other method. For example, one time I combed my curls out right after going through the process and ended up doing two big flat twists. The look was so much thinner than my normally just-washed hair, which I liked.

4. Shape

Each curl style has a different shape. My one-strand Bantu-knots end up being in an “S” shape. The results of perm rods* are more like curly fries. Curlformers*, for me, produce straight-up Shirley Temple curls. I love it!

Again, it’s closest to that of a flat-iron* curl. You could go into a majority setting and they wouldn’t even realize that you’re natural because the curls look so commonplace. Now to be clear, I am by no means ashamed of my hair type, I just like being seen for more than my hair and don’t want it to be a distraction–especially in the workplace..

5. Longevity

My curlformers* sets last longer than any other natural style I’ve done: Bantu knot outs, twist outs, braid outs, perm rods*, you name it! I can go about 4-5 days without touching up any of the curls and even when I do need to retouch them, I’ll only have to redo a few.

Since so much hair is clumped together in one curl, it’s very easy to see which ones need attention, as opposed to needed to redo 10 bantu knots to get the whole section looking right again. Am I making sense? I hope someone out there can relate!

Now, these things are awful to sleep in, so I’d suggest to leave yourself several hours for them to dry. You could always stuff them under a hooded dryer*, but the point of these styles is so they can be completely heatless! Let me know if any of you try them out! I use the pink and orange pack, by the way.
