Many of you might be looking for the variety of styles that you can probably rock this winter, and let me tell you, if you can get a Curlformers* set down, you will literally be set for the cold months.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that me and those spirally things do not get along. When I first went to Sally’s to spend a disrespectful amount of money on my set, I tried to use them that same night. I grabbed the grey hook and I don’t know if it was my two left hands, or just my excitement, but I could not get any of my hair through the spiral!

I tried a couple of times more, before giving up…the next day, I took everything back. Then like every indecisive natural, I waited a year and then tried again.

Girl let me tell you with a little practice and a splash of determination you will have the prettiest curls and waves you have ever seen on your head.

If you want to try Curlformers* keep reading, because after two years on trial and error, I have some pretty good tips.

1. Buy the right size and enough of them

It is so easy to run out of Curlformers, so you want to have enough to do your entire head. Basically its better to over buy than under buy. They aren’t cheap so if you dont want to spend that coin you can try some of the cheaper versions online. I won’t even lie to you and say they are anything like the originals, because they aren’t but they will give you a similar result.

Make sure you also have the right size for your length of hair, it is important that all of your hair fits in the spiral and you have none hanging out for a great set. Plus you want your ends covered or they will get dry and a bit frizzy in comparison to the length of your hair.

2. Make sure your hair is detangled

I mean, proper Denman brush*, until you can run your fingers through detangled. Detangling ensures that your hair is smooth and that your hair comes out super smooth after the set.

There really is nothing to it, just go through section by section detangle, set, repeat.

Soaking wet hair gives you the best sets hands down. So have your spray bottle handy to spray your hair with your water solution. One tip is if you are using a setting foam, make sure your hair is wet first. This makes sure your hair really sets well which leads me to my next point…

4. Install the curl formers close to the root

This is very important because it allows your hair to get maximum stretch and that sleek look that you are looking for. Push the curl former up to the root of your hair as close as you can manage to get it.

5. Let that bad boy dry completely

It can get super annoying to wait on a set that you really want to see the results for, but trust me when I tell you if you do not let your hair dry, you will be very disappointed.

Sit under a hooded dryer* if you have one or sleep with them overnight. They are made to allow air to pass through so if you plan to sleep with them you should wake up with dry hair.

Personally, I like to half dry with a dryer first and then sleep with them for good measure. I won’t say that you will have the most comfortable night’s sleep, but chalk that up to the price of beauty.

6. Use minimal product

Before you set your hair, you will have enough moisture from the water, and your setting lotion to keep your hair very moisturized. When you finally remove the Curlformers*, you won’t need to add anything else to moisturize your hair.

If you want to, you can use a little bit of light oil to your fingertips as you remove them from your hair. The oil gives your hair just the right amount of sheen it needs, and as you style the curls, it makes sure you have no friction on your fingers.

7. Styling

This is personal preference, but if you allow the curls to remain tight for the first day or two, as the week moves along, they will fall, making a once tight curly set into a sleek wavy set by Saturday.

This set will last all week long, so it’s perfect if you like to wear your hair stretched and not touch it again until wash day at the end of the week. If you want to make it last beyond a week, then the second week you can style your hair in buns or ponytails or just leave it stretched; it just depends on how your hair is holding up.

That’s it: have you tried Curlformers* yet?
