8 Bad Hair Habits We Need To Break

detangle post1

We cant even front, we all have those bad hair habits we know we need to break and we know deep down that without these habits our hair would be further along, growth and health wise. If only we would just do exactly what we need to do to achieve our hair goals we wouldn’t even have to read this post.

You want healthy hair right? Surely there are some things you do to your hair that are not so healthy and if you have any of the following habits when it comes to your hair, stop it now, missy you will be glad you did.

 1. Constantly touching your hair

Hand in hair syndrome is a real ya’ll, we all love to touch and feel our kinks and curls and yes, this can be strenuous to your strands. Any kind of pulling, tugging and excessive manipulation needs to remain limited. Try protective styles (braids, weaves*, wigs, etc) to keep your fingers from always messing with your hair.

2. Going weeks without washing your hair

We all do it every now and then, our lives get busy, and we just throw our hair up into a cute bun and go about it not giving a second thought to a wash day.

Do not abandon your hair…ever, if you do not have all the time in the world to follow through with your hair washing regimen, just do a quick co-wash or ACV rinse (Apple Cider Vinegar* & Water) to remove the old products from your hair and scalp so your hair can continue to grow and remain healthy. Do not forget to throw a moisturizer on your hair, too.

 3. Neglecting the scalp

The scalp is the most important part of hair growth do not neglect it or feed it products that will clog your pores such as mineral oil*. When washing, work in small sections to ensure that you are reaching your scalp massaging the scalp to get the blood flowing and for goodness sake, no scratching your scalp.

Scratching with your fingernails damages your pores there are healthier ways to scratch is by rubbing the area or massaging the area with Extra Virgin Olive Oil*, Tea Tree Oil*, Avocado Oil*, or do a hot oil treatment with your favorite oil.

4. Sleeping without a satin bonnet*

If I sleep without my bonnet one time it wont kill me

yup the ultimate cardinal sin and number cause of dryness and ultimately breakage. When sleeping, napping, or lounging on the couch, do not forget to tie your hair up and make this a habit. This prevents breakage, it also prevents you from putting your hands in your hair.

This one is a big no-no but feels oh so good when we finally get them out. The truth is this is damaging to the hair the better alternative is to simply grab your hair cutting scissors and cut the knot. This is much cleaner and healthier for the strand than popping them.

6. Not detangling your hair

Yikes! When we do not detangle, chances are the shed hair that sheds daily will be trapped in the hair that isn’t shedding causing an even bigger detangling mess. To make detangling easier, invest in a thick conditioner that has “slip”, conditioners like Tresemme Naturals, Trader’s Joe Nourish Spa Conditioner, and Design Essential Moisturizing Conditioner are some examples.

These types of conditioners, when saturated into the hair shaft, make the fingers or detangling tools glide right through. Additionally if you are not a huge fan of detangling, find styles that will maintain your detangled hair. Hairstyles that keep your hair stretched and tangle free are most ideal like roller sets, flexi rods*, braid-outs, twist-outs, etc.

 7. Doing your hair while you are tired

We get it, you do your hair when you have time and that’s usually right before bed, but it is a better habit to do your hair when you are most energized. If you are in the middle of doing it and you get tired, take a break or finish up the next day. This prevents you from rushing and breaking the hair, plus your hair will turn out far better if you take your time.

8. Styling your hair in tight hairstyles

This might be considered a bad habit but it might also just be a matter of how you like your hair. The problem is tight ponytails, braids, and buns are not good on the hair follicles. Loosen that hairstyle up, chica! The health of your hair is more important than how long the style will last or how great it looks.

Some of the other habits we thought of include, using excessive amounts of heat for the ease of styling, or some of us happen to be addicted to color, or even simple stuff like making the water run while detangling in the shower.

What hair habits have you been trying to break lately?
