4 Tweaks to Your Regimen that Could Save You Time and Money

natural hairI am no minimalist – at least not in the truest sense of the word. I love the idea (many of us do). As a matter of fact, it is the newest ‘it’ thing these days.

On YouTube you are bound to find someone sipping an expensive glass of wine or drinking some form of herbal tea you can only order directly from China showing you a closet that used to be filled with clothing from H&M and Forever 21 now drilled down to a few basics, some jeans and one pair of boots.

The problem with this new phenomenon is that we all do not know how to clearly define it, we don’t know if its only about what is in our closet vs indulging in bottles of expensive wine. Or is it about not having a TV or internet and living from food from your own garden.

Minimalism for now is what we want it to be, but the premise and the source of it is what is most important. I saw this quote online:

“We waste so many days waiting for the weekend. So many nights wanting morning. Our lust for future comfort is the biggest thief of life.” —Joshua Glenn Clark

I understood it to mean that we are always worried about the next thing and not being present in the situation that we are in.

If we define minimalism the way we want to for our life we can apply it in ways that can save us a ton of time and money and that can allow us to truly have the best of both worlds. On one hand we achieve all our goals and other hand we save time so we can do other things.

Our hair regimen is one of those things that can get pretty involved, we can spend an entire day, Sunday or Saturday mostly doing hair stuff and some of us miss out on other things that need our attention.

This post has 4 simple suggestions or tweaks you can make to your regimen that will save you time, energy and ultimately money. The idea is to help you become less ‘involved’, still allow you to meet your hair health and length goals and at the same time minimize the expense, (time and money) of hair.

This one is huge for me because why not make the best of your sleeping hours rather than spending 4 hours of waking hours deep conditioning* when you could just wake up and head straight into styling.

Use your night to do oil treatments, protein treatments, moisture treatments, all you need is a plastic bag to cover your hair, a hair tie to cover the bag and a bonnet for good measure.

2. Wash your hair less often

Unless you are a swimmer or partaking in some sort of activity that requires that you have to wash your hair more than once a week, you can save yourself the extra session by making sure that one session is good enough to take your through the week.

With your overnight deep condition you will have enough moisture to keep your hair moisturized for days without having to do that extra co-wash we are used to.

To do this the right way, styling plays an important part as well. For example if you just had wash day and deep conditioned well, you can style your hair in a protective style for the first half of the week, and finish up the week with a fun style until your next wash day.

Save water, save time, retain length…win, win, win!

3. Trim and seal your ends

Remember that one time when you spent an hour detangling your hair and you found yourself dumb founded by the fact that one person could spend so much time unraveling pieces of fiber as life passed you by.

Que the end of the dramatics, but really, one of the reasons natural hair gets so tangled is because of thin split, brittle, ‘please trim me now’ ends.

If you just make a habit out of keeping your ends in tip top shape, you will save time with detangling, lose less hair during detangling and everything in your regimen becomes easier.

4. Get your product junkie situation under control

Product junkie, minimalist, saving money, and saving time are never in a cohesive sentence together unless the person is saying the following: “If you want to be more of a minimalist, save some money and save some time you have to stop being a product junkie”.

Some of us like trying new products and that is great, but if you are reading this post for some help with efficiency then you have to stop buying a ton of stuff to do simple things. They say that your hair has memory and sometimes your hair will get tired of certain things. News flash, your hair never gets tired of protein, water or oil and thats all you need to survive.

Use a mixture of things from your kitchen and from the store that way you cut down on deep conditioners and moisture sprays and even leave in conditioners.

Where you can, use regular conditioner as a leave in and DIY your deep conditioners and moisture sprays from your fridge. DIY is the ultimate money saver and your hair never gets tired of things that are all natural.

What time and money savers have you incorporated in your regimen?
