Todays affirmation: I am grateful for all that I have!

On today's episode of Alyssa can figure anything out, I lightened my black hair. So if you guys watch my last video, I talked about how I dyed my hair darker and I wanted mm-hmm and I lightened it and I'm just gon na kind of walk you through that today my hair was darker than I wanted. I originally thought: hey, I'm the diamond hairs a little darker, because my roots, we're starting to grow in and my roots are pretty light. Huh then right here it turned out black. So I was like. I need to figure out a way to lighten this and they figure, because I just I'm in here - I could just shampoo it. It would be fine. No! No! No, when your hair is almost black, it's like doesn't budge, so my hair is still dark. It'S just not black and in different lights. It looks even lighter than this right now. Thank you. I literally, I can't wait for it to you, but might not more you ever dye your hair and then realize. Oh, my hair look just five and actually love it. Now or before, huh whatever so I started panicking, I was like wait. I woke up in the morning. I scared myself and I was like this is not nope. I was not meant for this super super dark. I think this is like the darkest I can go and I can still rock with it making this wig a lean with a rock. Would I still look good um, not black and not darker than this, and I will not go darker than this ever again. In my whole existence of living so anyway, so I had to figure out what am I gon na? Do I started googling how to lighten my hair all this stuff people were using like vitamin C tablets all this stuff and honestly, I was like I'm a little afraid to lighten it in that way, because the before and afters were it was like black hair, too Orange hair, I was like no, no, that's not what I wanted, so I was a little nervous. So a lot of you on snapchat and Twitter were sending me over. So many suggestions. It was like use clarifying shampoo use, baking, soda, lemon juice, peroxide, anti dandruff, shampoo, Head & Shoulders all of this stuff, and I was feeling a little overwhelmed. I just got in the shower and I tried to really scrub my hair out, because I've done that in the past, where I had a dye job that I didn't love and I really scrubbed my head and I could get a bunch of color out. Nothing was happening, my hair was just not budging. I tried vinegar cuz, I read online. You could use vinegar back to nothing my head just smelled bad and then I tried baking soda with anti dandruff shampoo. I just ordered some head and shoulders stainable. I put some shampoo in there. I poured a bunch of baking soda in it. I didn't measure anything I just eyeballed it until it was like a thick paste. I lathered it all over my hair and I let it sit and nothing happened. I put it under a cap and everything I waited. Absolutely nothing happened. Nothing budged and I was like this is just annoying and my hair feels nasty. How did it work so? I was like all right, I'm a little frustrated, but you know it's fine I'll figure. It out so I did that earlier in the day and then I wash it again that night I tried it one more time in nothing budge. So last night I was googling forever. I was like there has to be something else, and then I remembered I had some leftover a developer from when I was dying right here. The other day I have a small amount of developer left. What if I used that with the baking soda, because I believe that will lift the color I googled it and they said that it could. I was really nervous. This is why, when I was blond, I never bleached my hair. I never dyed it. I never touched it personally. I think I only ever used like pink shampoo on it over my like white blonde hair, because I would have a hint of color that was it and it was not dyeing it's just like shampoo. It was easy to use that was it. I didn't have to bleach it like nothing. I would never. I could never do that. I would never trust myself about, just as I shouldn't trust myself with this, but okay, long story short so anyway, so I was like alright, I kind of made a paste of it this morning. I literally did this this morning, like 9:00 a.m. so in the cup lastic Bowl. I poured in the leftover developer and I just kept pouring baking soda into it until it turned again. It'S like a thick paste and first I did like a little test strand. I just did like the end of a piece of hair and let it sit for awhile. I even put the blow dryer on it to try to like activate it, and I didn't really feel like anything was working, and so I rinse it out - and I was like you know what I'm just gon na. Do it all over my whole head and I'm just gon na, go for it because my hair, so I can be crazy. So that's exactly what I did this morning. I went into the bathroom and I put it on my hair as if I was dyeing my hair. I did it in layers, I just did it in layers. I took the brush, I did off my roots and then I pulled it down the rest of my hair and I did that all over my head and I put it up into a cap and it was probably in a cap for about 30 minutes. By the way, I just disclaimer - I'm not telling anyone to do this, I'm not saying you should do this to your hair. I really strongly suggest you Jesse a professional and don't do your hair yourself. Truly, that's the lesson I learned this week, even though I already knew it. I thought I was a hair stylist. I am NOT doing that again anyway, so I did that and then I actually took my hair dryer and I was like blow drying around not for long because I was, I didn't know how I was gon na react. I didn't know how my hair was gon na turn out. I didn't want it to be splotchy, I didn't want. You know I just wanted to get some freaking hair dye out of my hair. I got in the shower and I rinsed in all of a sudden. I just thought like brown come out and I was like I answer my own prayer. So that's what I did. I used baking soda and developer again using your own risk. I am not telling you to use it if you use and you don't like it, that's not my fault, that's your father, you not until you do it. I literally don't know No and they lightened my hair up. It'S still obviously dark, because I you know, I didn't leave it on for super long and I'm not a developer, and so this is what it is now. I actually really like this color. I do want this to fade more and I am excited for it to be more. I'M not gon na lie, but I'm gon na rock with this. For now it's still cute. I can handle this I'll, be fine. That'S how I ruined my hair and saved it within three days. So moral of the story is: don't dye, your own hair, don't cut your own hair, go to a professional. I shouldn't even have to say this because it's common sense, but I did it and I messed up, and so I'm telling you I'm warning you you guys have to be for your tutorials, I'm not a professional. This is just what happened to me. Learn from me. Do, as I say, not as yada yada yada boom, I spent so much time on my own here Wow my hair looks thick and luscious right now: okay, hello. I will tell you, though my hair feels nasty. It feels so dry the ends, although my hair looks like full and like Vavoom hello, the ends of my hair are seriously like that. It was just so sad but yeah there you go. That was my hair story. I really truly hope you enjoyed my pain and my pleasure. I that's something now I will say, although I may be impulsive, sometimes whatever happens in my life, I always always always always turn it around. Make things happen and get stuff done. Always I'm just like a genie in a bubble for myself that way, you know what I mean, so I fixed it, I'm happy with it now I'm gon na put a little extra Tanner on get a little tan going to you know not have this be so Harsh and we'll go from there it'll be fine, but I actually really do like it nice. So, yes, there you go. I hope you guys enjoyed this video. I will be back to new videos next week. Let me know what you would like to see. Besides the regulars have have done. I honestly I need to talk about that in different. I do I'm feeling kind of in a like a weird. I don't know what I want to do with my channel. It'S fine! I felt like that for months. I think you guys can tell but yeah that's where I'm at that's what happened. I love you guys so much. Thank you for watching. I hope you guys enjoyed today's video. So, yes, I hope you're having a wonderful day, and I will see you in the next one yeah bye, guys see how much lighter it looks like this is on my phone compared to you looks so dark that looks way dark and then it looks so much Lighter right here, what's the truth,

Lyss Ryann: I think i used the volume 10 developer btw!!

Rob Link: Been a hairdresser for 25 years and this stuff works. Baking soda and 10 volume in a bag for 30 minutes. You could see it going down drain and NO DAMAGE like bleach or color remover.

hailey: It's so funny how when you color your hair you hate it but then everyone else loves it or thinks it looks beautiful! I remember I went a little too blonde and I HATED it but everyone thought it looked so pretty and I was like where??? haha

Tommy Lellan: They should put a massive size 26 font disclaimer on dark brown dye packages. “Basically black”. I’m mortified.

alice gandy: Omg thank you so much this worked so well!!!!!! Dyed my hair “dark brown” and it went black and i was so devastated and this made it go the exact colour i wanted!!!!

Courtney T: Girl, if I could hug you I would! This worked!!I was literally in tears with my husband trying to convince me I still looked cute lol If I could like it twice I would ✨

Shelby brown: THANK YOU FOR SAVING MY LIFE! I have an interview tomorrow and decided to dye my hair brown yesterday but it came out black ‍♀️ I found you’re video today and it’s saved my ass

ILAH Mache: I literally just did this and it works! I tried to do a dark copper red and it turned black! I put 20 vol developer with baking soda (make sure to start with your ends first and work your way up), put a hairdryer on the cap until my hair felt warm and washed with a clarifying shampoo. I then kept rinsing and rinsing and after the water ran clear I put a protein mask on for 15min and finished with leave in conditioner. It WORKS!! <3

Nanabrinny: This is no joke exactly what happened to me and how I felt . Never touching my hair again ( but knowing me I might )

Marian Scissors: love the honesty and how you say Go to a pro. Black and dark brown is super hard to get rid of- i tell my clients to just do a SEMI color and buy black conditioner if they ever want that really dark look. so much healthier, and easier to remove

Missing M: Two days ago I dyed my hair a “medium brown” and it turned out jet black (my hair was originally an ash brown) and I used equal parts 10 volume developer & baking soda, mixed it together, soaked it into my hair & used a plastic bag on top to heat my hair, waited 25 minutes, got into the shower and used clarifying shampoo, then a hair mask for 10 minutes, and a deep conditioner. My hair is no longer jet black, it’s now just a dark brown :) I recommend doing this method to strip a dark hair dye mistake, rather than bleaching or ‘hair color remover’ because those methods will leave your hair brassy, but with this baking soda method, you just strip the dark intense color. Thank you!!

Gloria Lopez: I have been dying my hair at home forever and could never get it to lighten. Didn't want to use bleach. But this alternative worked perfectly!! Thank you!

Krystal Singh: I’ve literally never professionally dyed my hair and I’m never gonna so definitely gonna do this thank you so so much ❤️

Hope: This worked for me! I went from incredibly dark brown to my natural medium brown. For me, I had to rinse after around 15 minutes of processing (you'll probably know when it's time to rinse by the color the paste turns on your hair after a bit of time, because sometimes you may think it's black when it's actually just dark brown). If some strands are porous and become too light from the process, use what's left of your developer and what's left of the dye that messed you up. Mix the developer and dye and put it on those strands. Rinse that after only ten minutes or so. I see a lot of complaints about how this didn't work, so my advice is to maybe ignore the times given in the video and pay attention to how your hair is processing and use that to dictate the time. Thank you! This was a lifesaver.

Gloria Lopez: I have been dying my hair at home forever and could never get it to lighten. Didn't want to use bleach. But this alternative worked perfectly!! Thank you!

nina labranche: i just accidentally dyed my hair black and if this doesn’t work i’m going to cry

Deanne Stowe: I did this an hour ago and really pleased with the results. Went from very dark chocolate brown to a shade lighter. I also called a salon and they told me to use Tide powder in the same fashion. I chose the developer method instead.

Rosie Day: THIS WORKS. I literally can't thank you enough. My hair got way too dark and I had that same thought of "god it looked so good before why did I mess with it". Anyway, I mixed baking soda with 10 volume developer and let it sit for 20 minutes with a bag over my head, because I only wanted it a few shades lighter/a bit warmer. It turned out this gorgeous chocolate brown. It's SO GOOD. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOUUUUU.

Portia: Thank you so much!! This absolutely worked and gave my hair a beautiful brown instead of the blob of black! It's super cute and now I can let it heal and fade.

Julissa Hurtado: tried to go brown and ended up black, you’re a blessing! ❤️

asAlwaysAriel: Ah, I wish I would have found this video sooner! Thank you for the advice. Your hair looks amazing with your eyes btw!

Debbie H: Like so many others I started searching online after freaking out about how dark my hair went after using a darker brown dye on my hair. I just coloured it yesterday so I spent all night researching what to do and it seemed like the developer and baking soda was the best way. I bought volume 10 developer and some baking soda. I mixed it in a hair colouring bowl with 3/4 full of developer and then I just added baking soda. I made it until it was a paste but not super thick. I was using the dye brush but I noticed I had to go in with the gloved hand and break up the baking soda. I have no idea if I got the ratio's right. I applied it to my dry hair and as soon as I started applying it, I turned my timer to 25 minutes. I did sections and then clipped them up on top of my head. I put a plastic bag over my hair and I did use my hair dryer for a few minutes to add some heat to the outside of the bag. As soon as the time was up, I started rinsing it out. I was too worried to go the 30 minutes. I was pleased to see the dye in my bathtub. I wish there would have been more but I was happy to at least see something. I used my pureology shampoo and conditioner and even then, it's going to take awhile for the straw like feeling to go away, it does make your hair feel very dry. I can't say I've noticed a huge difference but there is a difference, it took away the deep black. Perhaps I didn't add enough baking soda or leave it on long enough. I might try it again in a few days. The only reason why I'm hesitant to redo it is I did experience some breakage, not clumps but there was quite a bit of hair in my tub and also when I brush it over the sink I see bits of hair, not long strands so I know it's not from my roots. However, my hair is pretty delicate right now which is why I freaked out at having to do anything right after I just coloured it. I actually wouldn't color my hair but I do it to get rid of my grey roots and over time my hair has gotten darker and darker. So, thank you so much for this video and for everyone who commented, I read a ton of comments for clarification. What would we do without youtube??!!

Christina Scheel: Thank youuuuuuu. This video saved me :) My hair was WAY too dark and this worked like a charm

Les 2601: Omg you’re such a good help rn !! I’m On my way! To try it ! Girl I’m trying to dye my own hair red but obviously I had it black but it’s been months so I’m sure it’s already mostly all off !! I pray to God this works because I dyed it red on my own rn at 1:15am, just the front hair and only my roots got super red but I’m so anxious to dye it red ALL !

Melissa Wtt: Another thing you could do is a bleach bath- it really saved me when trying to get extra blue dye from my hair. Mix 20 or 30 developer (depending on how much lift you want) in equal parts. Then add anti dandruff shampoo (either 1:1 or 1:2 ratio of bleach to shampoo, depending on how much lift you want). Cover your hair with it evenly and let sit for 10-20 minutes maximum. It's less damaging and gives a more even result than just bleaching it yourself. It's very drying though so load up on conditioner after.

Teya: Omg this actually worked! I wanted a nice chocolate brown but it came out black. I legit couldn’t sleep because of it and I found this video 1 hr ago at 5am and I put 1.5% activator because that’s all I had and a ton of baking soda, I left it for 30 minutes and used heat on it to activate it. Straight away when I was washing it, i saw all this brown dye washing off and I was so happy! Now my hair is a perfect chocolate brown! TRY THIS NOW!

Ashley Chiara: I think this color looks amazing on you!

Steph Makes Up: Thanks for this video! In my case, the "professional" messed up my hair so I'm going to try and save it haha! last resort here I comeeeee

Julie Maron: This literally saved my hair!!! Thank you so much

Ioana Ploscaru: I tried the developer + baking soda method before and it really worked! My hair went from black to dark orange/auburn but it worked. It also left my hair awfully brittle, but i fixed that on the next washing.

Lea Toshiye: This color is stunning on you girl!

Sandra G: omg girl, you saved my life lmao i fucked up my hair by dyeing it "light brown" turned out black , tried color oops and dyed over again, went black again i cried lol i was so unhappy. i found your video and i JUST tried the developer + baking soda and omg it really worked!!!!!!!! dude i'm sooo freakin happy!!!! thank you so much

melayna jaye: I have been box dyeing my hair for 2 years now. About a year ago I accidentally dyed it black instead of a dark brown and I’ve been on the fence about whether I should change back to dark brown. I went to a hairdresser a few months ago and they gave me two options: either pay $1000 and slowly use bleach over a one year period until it’s lighter or go home and just dye my roots the colour I want and let it grow out. I started dyeing my roots dark brown which means that my roots were brown and my ends were black and now that we are in quarantine I just wanna get rid of the black completely but I’m not sure what to do. Do I bleach my head? Use colour remover?

Crystel Acevedo: I seriously LOVE the color! I think it looks so good and makes your eyes pop!! Rock it girl!

Alisha Lalljee: I am going to pray for you for the rest of my life, I looked like a clown with dark dark black hair being Indian I already had black hair. You are a savour I just tried it. I have a pageant coming up in 4 days and you have saved my life. I love you. I’ve come back just to say a big big thank you. I thanked the almighty for you as I washed my hair that’s how grateful I am to you.

G T: Thanks Lyss your videos is by far the most informative of all. And you look super amazing no matter what color your hair is.

Alex .Tolmie: I was a bit nervous about using developer and my hair turning orange etc! I have found the best thing I’ve been doing is head and shoulders classic shampoo. I rinse my hair and apply it, really rub it in then leave it in your hair for half an hour to a few hours, if it’s sunny outside go sit outside with it! Every time I go in the shower after doing this there is hair dye in the water, I have done this 3 days in a row now and my hair is getting lighter each time. Just a suggestion if the idea of using developer to almost re-dye your hair scares you! I tried the fairy liquid/baking soda but that didn’t really work for me, no dye came out when I did it! Hope this helps x

Li H: Yes, developer does work wonders. I got the Ion color remover powder from Sally’s and mixed it with developer, undoubtedly I didn’t apply it carefully and got a bit patchy and one side of my hair didn’t remove enough color so I bought another pack and this time I read the instructions that said to add just water. I did and it was a waste of time! I’m doing it again tomorrow with developer again

Khilola Vahobova: YUSSSSS, I love the energy in this video! You definitely turned your hair around, thanks for the tip!

Charlie Belk: I tried to go back to my natural which is dirty blonde. Dyed my hair with a dark ash blonde... and now it's almost black. No clue how this happened. If my color doesn't strip soon with the dandruff shampoo, this is definitely the next step

Jen: This worked for me. I used semi permanent dark brown dye which turned out black. I mixed the developer from a box of light brown hair dye with the baking soda and left on my hair for about 30 minutes. The black totally lightened to a really pretty and much more flattering dark brown with a very subtle auburn tint. Love it, was easy and a cheap fix!!

vickie mechling: Lyss, I love you! I just did the baking soda and developer cream, 30 minutes. Yes, I did see brown rinse out. I had dyed it with a burgundy. My natural color was dark brown. So I did the remedy and I love the result!!! I am a young looking 66 year old, but that hideous black, which happened from the burgundy too saturated in my head, now looks great!!!

Loz C: I hope this works thanks for this video ! Glad it worked for you! I have used a box dye that turned black during lockdown ( probably like millions of other people ) x

Kali Ross: I’ve got it in my hair now as we speak! Thank you so much for sharing!! I hope mine lightens as beautiful as yours!!

Rahman.milly98: I’m sorry but I love how this made me want to do it more!! “Warning do it at you’re own risk ITS NOT MY FAULT “ ❤️

Deb D.: THANK YOU I'm 55 and this is the 1st time I've heard of it and I was in the industry, coloring my hair since age 13. This worked like a charm. oh my gosh, I did EXACTLY what you did and my result came out just like yours. I love it! It's kind of an Auburn dark Brown. Just beautiful.

Dee Whisenant: I have dark brown dyed hair with auburn dye over it and I’m trying this just to see what happens. The mix has been on for like 45 minutes we will see how it goes!! Edit: it did not make my hair lighter but it DID make a huge chunk fall out. My hair is noticeably thinner now. Oh well.

Jodi Markley: Thank you for this video. Omg I dyed my hair black and it was way black. And I knew I couldn’t dye it again I googled a million ways then found your video and I can’t say thank you enough. It actually worked!

Zuza F: this saved my hair, it looks even. went from almost black to an amazing dark brown with highlights

Emily Moore: This worked & gave me the color I was shooting for originally. Thank youuuu

M: I’ve been searching all morning because I did EXACTLY this last night, I’m trying this right now thank you so much.

Assassin Thief: I’ve tried this method on bleach hair and it turned to a good brown ty for creating this mine was extremely dark from dye now it’s a lot better

Alex Fortin: You saved my hair! I wanted a dark ash brown but my hair turned out black and my roots navy blue. I did this with 20 volume followed by 2 dish soap wash and a wash with clarifying shampoo. I finished with a hair mask and the blue is gone. My hair feel a little dry from the baking soda but nothing that can be fixed with moisturizing products.

Faith Treece: The fact that this actually worked im so thankful for you i could kiss you! I dyed my hair “dark brown” and it came out black but i found your video and even though it burned a little bc i used 30 volume, it came out a dark brown like how i wanted! You’re right about it making your hair very dry but nothing a few hair treatments cant fix, again thank you so much!!

Nicolle Hinestroza: I dyed my hair dark brown and I've been trying to lighten it without using bleach. I've tried two methods: baking soda + hydrogen peroxide & baking soda + dandruf shampoo + vitamin C, and they kinda helped but now I'm on my way to try this and I hope it works for me!!! I'll post if it worked

Rupali Das: Baking soda does bring out a beautiful color in hair, unlike bleach which always make dark hair brassy which requires toning. That's why I love soda better than bleach, and it doesn't even damage the hair much.

Yasinta Intan: Omg it worked! thank you so muuuchh but for those of you who want to try this out, please be cautious for the developer that you use (approximately vol 20 developer or else your hair will fall off and get so dry), it’s better to not apply it on your scalp and use it gradually, don’t put it on for too long (approximately 30 minutes). After you rinse it off, don’t forget to use conditioner and hair mask to prevent your hair from getting dry. Good luck!

Jessica Ardis: I dyed my hair really dark brown and this turned it light brown with 20 volume developer and I left it on for like 30 min. Thx so much for this idea!!

RosieWilliamOlivia: Year's ago I dyed my hair "black" it was reddish brown and looked incredible. Today I died my hair "dark brown" and I look like a man in their 60s refusing to accept I'm old. I look just terrible... ugh!! This was me being kind to myself I can't afford another dye ☹

Lyss Ryann: Hi guys! :) Reminder - I am not a professional. I am not telling you to do this. I may not have answers to some of your questions. This is just something I tried a few years ago in a panic that ending up working for me! Hope that clears a few things up! <3

Isabell Linarte: Thank you so much! At first I thought I looked like a witch with my black hair but now it looks so much better. life savior!!!

Madeline Figueroa: OMG, it works! I've had my hair colored for years, all the colores you can imagen. Now from a medium brown it went to a light brown. No lie.

Annoar97: OH MY GOOOOD I'D LOVE TO WATCH YOUR VIDEOS BACK WHEN YOU HAD GREY HAIR! Then I didn't watched your videos for a long time and now I searched for hair dying videos, clicked yours and was like: YOU KNOW THAT FACE! :D ♡

J: I tried it and IT WORKS!!!!! Couple of things I want to mention. Depending on your previous hair coloring history, it may or may not lift the color evenly. You can always reapply the developer/baking soda in areas that have remained darker or resistant to lightening. (In fact, to get a good final result you should ensure the color is lifted evenly before you tone or re-color your hair). The second thing is, I recommend Olaplex 1 and 2 rebonding treatment (you can apply at home or get a salon treatment) or at the very least Olaplex 3 to help correct any damage caused by lifting the color. UPDATED to add, K18 is a great new alternative to Olaplex (I happen to think it's even better)! It's important to use something to correct the damage caused by developer/bleach!!!

Annalisa Nunez: This worked for me, thank you! I only left it on for about 20 mins cuz I started freaking out because I'm an idiot and put it on my roots and my roots were getting "hot". And yes roots are orange lol but actually not that noticable. We shall see how this grows out. Also, like you, my hair feels like shit, but hopefully that will get better.

Flavia Abadía - Your Girl Flav: Dyed my hair dark purple (because Covid quarantine) and I look super goth right now because of my light skin. I'm definitely going to try this!! I like my OG hair colour better!!

Evelina Lampropoulou: This really helped! I had my hair strawberry blonde and wanted to go back to my natural chocolate brown hair color, so i used a mix of no.5 and no.4 dye, but my hair turned out really dark, almost total black. I tried this method and it worked pretty well. My hair is now a light brown. I used 250 gr baking soda and 120 ml 20° developer and left it for about 40 minutes. Thank you so much for the video!

Kristyna J: omg, thank you! My hair supposed to be nice choco brown and I am black. Dont take me wrong, its such an amazing color, but I am fair type and look bad. :D I cant wait to do it!

Bells: Omg that hair colour is goooorgeous!! Literally what I'm looking for! You look beautiful

Veronika Kirova: Thank you very much for this video I was desperate ,after salon coloring my hair went black didn't know what to do tried everything and only your advice gave me my color back, this method really works and didn't damage my hair.

Kayla Fuller: i just went and got my hair darkened and she straight up made it black and now i wanna cry

Ninnjette: Thank you for making this video!! I let my hair grow out of this black for a year straight, I finally got it the color I wanted so I seen this box of hair dye it was purple and I was like yeah I want some purple tint and it came out shoe polish black.. I look like Wednesday Addams.. i’ve always been very pale and I have this dark black shoe polish color on my head… I look like a freaking serial killer.. definitely going to try this tomorrow praying it works!

K: Hey there. I usually don't add comments but thought I would share my experience. I'm so glad I watched this video! I followed the baking soda/developer solution (I also added some conditioner, which was a recommendation I found in my own research). I have to say that it DID work for me. (Phew!) I have dark dark brown hair. When trying to match my root colour and colour out my grey hair, the colouring turned my hair black jet black. I used a super strong/permanent formula meant to cover grays. Then I attempted TWO tries of 40 developer plus light brown to add highlights/dimension. The black was so dark that the light brown didn't lift any of the black colour (maaaayyybe a hint of lighter shade of dark brown in the sun, but barely). I brushed the baking soda/developer/conditioner on my hair and left for 40-15 mins (areas I did first got treated longer...I was working as fast as I can since I really only wanted it on for 20-30 mins). When I washed the concoction out of my hair, I didn't notice anything in the rinse water. The water seemed clear (and I thought it didn't work), however, when as my hair dried, I could see that it was ... about a shade, at least, lighter! The bonous is that the areas where I added the light brown highlights also lightened and now you can actually see the highlights that I added. Tbh, I think if I had left it on longer, the colour might have lifter even more and more of an orange tint might have shown. I say this because I can barely see some orange/brownish red showing through.... just a hint in the sunlight, however, it may be due to the exposure to sun and chlorine). Overall, I do like this new colour and it's more in line with the colour I was going for . In any event, this worked for me and my type of hair and colour it had on...I''m so glad I found this video and for your honest sharing! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Sabina Garcia: I went to a “professional” and I asked her to dye my hair light brown and she dyed it DARKASS BROWN!!!! I’m so upset and I wasted all this money thank you for this thought I’m going to try it out

Jessie: Saving my life rn!! I’m going back to my blonde as naturally as I can, I’m so scared to grab the bleach

Kathyn Mason: I tried it and it worked! I was successfully able to banish my inner Goth. My hair is a brassy brown red now but way better than blackish, Thanks

Ms Montreal: This worked !! I’m so happy . It did dry out my hair but it was so worth it

Julia Wilczewska: does anyone know if this works on already faded hair ? i’ve had my dye in for a few weeks (it’s faded to a medium brown) and i just wanted to see if i could get it a little bit closer to my natural blonde so the roots aren’t as noticeable

Marcella Renee: I used clarifying shampoo with dawn and baking soda once a week for a month and could see the color stripping and it worked.

Isabelle: I've actually had success lightening my bad home dye job with a Lush shampoo bar. I used Honey I washed the Kids but I think any of them would work. I washed and rinsed three times in a row and the water in the sink turned light brown, which is how I know it was working. It's not a super dramatic difference but it did strip color, and now that I've done a second round of washing it's almost where I wanted it to be. I think it worked because their shampoo bars are super harsh on hair; I always feel like I have to apply a gallon of conditioner after I use one. Moral of the story, don't use their shampoo bars if you LIKE your hair color, lol. Full disclosure: My hair wasn't black, but it was a very, very dark reddish brown (despite the box promising a golden-y medium brown). The dye I used was Loreal Preference.

Surina Morales: i’m trying this literally RIGHT NOW, pray for me i regret dying my hair black

Brooke Williams: I dyed my hair ‘dark blonde’ last night and it turned out dark brown.... Im sooo gonna try thisssss!

linn melville: I'm so glad you fixed your hair still looked amazing with darker hair xxx

Raigna Vargas: This is exactly how i lighten my hair. I have a tutorial on my channel. Im not a professional but its worked for years. Im allergic to hair dye so its my go to always

Lauren Amrine: Thank you for this. I had an accident with box hair color and the brown color I bought turned my porous ends black. I used this method twice, using heat the second time, and it removed enough of the color that I no longer have to pay for a full-blown color correction at the salon. My hair doesn’t look perfect by any means, but the color is even enough that I can have it colored over by a professional now.

Sheri Conner: She's is awesome and did a great job! You go girl

Noelle Perez: This color looks sooooo good on you

Corrina Williams: i literally dyed my hair ‘brown/black’ yesterday and it’s black. hopefully this works before school tomorrow.

Steph K: although this worked slightly, please be cautious if you have thinning/damaged hair or already thin hair. i lost an alarming amount of hair in this process with 10 developer creme and baking soda/powder for 15 minutes, macadamia treatment conditioner. make sure you get a good treatment conditioner as well, watch how long you keep under the cap, and MAKE SURE you super wash this mixture completely out of your hair, i rinsed twice and still had a little residue left.

Tyra B: For dry hair/ ends.. I used castor oil helps a lot over any masks/ oils I've used... just leave it in your hair for however long (over 25minutes), then rinse it out

Myah Andrews: I’m about to try this I by accident dyed my hair black. I hate it. Update: it took a lot of the dye out and I can kinda see my natural hair color coming out but I’m just going to leave it for now

Karen Isler: I’m so relating right now!!!!! I tried a new colorist and I think she left the color in waaaaay too long and it’s about 5 shades darker than I wanted :((((( I had a proaddiction hair treatment done last week and was wondering anyone knows if the baking soda and developer solution would be ok to use with it?? I don’t want to damage the affects of the proaddiction which is sort of like a keratin treatment

Savannah Hewatt: Yes yes yes! Worked PERFECT!! THANK YOU!!!!

lololo lolol: Just coloured my hair from bleach blonde to level 3 brown. Used semi-perm red dye undertone to avoid greening and its now DARKK DARKK brown with red undertones! Lord help

caitlin clague: i just went to get my (accidental) bleach blonde hair toned to light brown and the stylist literally dyed my hair this super dark maroon/ purple colour (with permanent dye!). i hate it so much i really hope this works

annie: this works!! a little too well thought lmfao. i dyed my hair by mixing two clairol natural instinct dyes and it came out kind of black. i followed this video immediately after dying it. however, i listened to a comment as well which was my mistake. i put the mixture in my hair and a bag on top and waited for 30 minutes. however, i also used a hair dryer, which i think sped up the process. my advice to you is to leave the mixture in for 30 minutes OR use a hair dryer until your hair warm. thanks so much for your help!!

anna: i didnt want to bleach my hair so i just did the head and shoulders method and it lightened to a dark brown. its still dark, but its so much better than before

Maddy Rio: Thank you so so much I box dyed my hair back to brown from a blonde colour because I was missing being a brunette but my hair went black black ‍♀️I used developer and baking soda and this worked like a charm sitting at a nice chocolate brown colour now! Safe to say I won’t be touching my hair anymore

Jenna Sarabia: Thank you! Took me two times with volume 10 but it worked!

Familien larsen 2014: cool. Being a gray-haired 54year man, I also went wrong with "light-brown" hairdye - that came out as "very dark brown". .. => Goal: Light hair. So, after trying "blond haircolor" without luck (just more artificial cobber/violet/orange glares) - I tried 2x "C-Vitamin", and became Cobber-Hair colored ... So cool as 54yo ... nobody will notice, right ... so now I live behind closed curtains - luckily, I am blessed with winter and a hat (only prob is 8 hours at work, inside, with a hat - but hey what - new fashion!). Story is, I don't know wtf to do - and after the "not exactly natural results so far", I don't know about the "remove cobber from hair" road ;-)
