Hey youtube: what's going on, i'm super excited about this video because we are going to be talking about the three mistakes that we make sometimes when it comes to purchasing hair care products and the whole point of life honestly is that we make a mistake. They'Re supposed to learn from them, so let me share some mistakes that i've seen people make and also mistakes that i've made as well in the past when it came to buying hair care products, so stay tuned all right number one. A lot of times. We tend to focus on marketing ingredients versus functional ingredients - okay - and i talk a lot about this in my book - the curly girls, guys who hair care ingredients but marketing ingredients are those ingredients that are typically on the front of the bottle and they're designed to capture Your attention, which is fine because marketing works. However, if you are part of curly chemistry and you guys subscribe to my channel, i want to educate you guys and teach you guys how to purchase products that will be more beneficial for your hair, functional versus the marketing. Okay, his marketing are just foo, foo ingredients, sometimes they're in there at just a drop. Sometimes they are in their applications of mouth, but more than likely they're in there at very small amounts, and you want to focus on functional ingredients like things like glycerin, acetyl, alcohol, sterile alcohol, behendromium chloride, behavior ammonium of the sulfate. All of these things are actually in the formula at efficacious amounts to actually perform and do the job. Okay, so focus more so on functional versus marketing. All right number, two, the second mistake i'll say, is that sometimes we don't really know what we need. You know. Do we need moisture? Do we need moisture retention, which is something entirely different, or do we need protein? Okay, now moisture and moisture retention go hand in hand you're like step one and step two a lot of times, you're gon na need moisture. If your hair is breaking, if it feels dry, it feels rough. If it looks rough, it looks dull. Those are key, like you know, indicators that whoa i need moisture, but you also need a moisture retention to lock in that moisture as well. You need protein if your hair feels very weak and mushy and if it's wet it kind of sticks to each other a little bit too much, then definitely you need protein so figuring out what your hair needs is going to help you in the long run, to Make sure you are purchasing the correct products? I almost want to say 70 of the time, it's moisture that you need a lot of times it's protein if you are relaxed or if you regularly get chemical services or color services, or if you have moisture, overload, aka hybrid fatigue, then more than likely you will Need a protein-like product. The next mistake that we make sometimes with these hair care products, is really not knowing how to use them. Yes, they have instruction on the bottle, but there's also technique attached to these products. That would be beneficial, so number one technique which i always talk about now with curly chemistry is pnp. You want to make sure you penetrate moisturize and protect. If you have no clue what i'm talking about. That'S okay. I have a video below for you to check out, but that is a technique. That'S going to help you to retain moisture. It is a game changer and it's absolutely amazing. Next is going to be sealing the moisture in. Of course, we talk about. Oh use an oil and all that, but there's actually different classes of oils number one is going to be hair. Grease. Hair grease is an amazing way to lock in moisture. You can do this when you're doing your braid out with your twist outs and you're, trying to lock in that moisture that you put on your hair you're, going to wake up number one to soft your hair, because hair grease is bomb if hair grease is not Bomb for you, another oil will be something like castor, avocado or sunflower. That'S the second class of oils and the third class of oil is going to be something lighter like jojoba or grapeseed oil or sweet almond oil as well, and the last mistake that i see that people make i make two as well is lack of consistency. We can have these amazing products, but if we're not being consistent with our wash days consistently moisturizing our hair, we're not going through the results that we desire. So for me, i learned that i have to moisturize my hair, if not every day, once every two days, if i go two days without moisturizing, my hair, that's when the driver is going to come the breakage, the tangles. All of that is going to come into play so consistency and developing that routine, that daily weekly monthly routine is going to help to take your hair to the next level. I guarantee it okay, i hope you guys enjoyed this video and learned something new. My question for you is: what is the one mistake that you've made along your hair care journey share below? I look forward to joining the conversation with you. My next video is going to be on why some products seem to stop working after a while. It'S so frustrating when we love something and now we're using it over time. Our hair stops responding to it. So in my next video we're going to break that down and really look at to why that takes place. Okay, so make sure you guys subscribe. Notifications are on because you're not going to want to miss it, be sure to check out the curly girls guide to hair care ingredients. I mentioned earlier how i break down marketing versus functional ingredients, so you'll find all that good stuff in the guide of the link below for you to check out and if you're interested in starting a haircare line. I'Ll have a link below for you to work with me, one-on-one all right guys. I love you guys. So much and i'll see you guys soon. Bye,

SheRea DelSol: Yes! Love the tip about functional vs marketing ingredients! Your videos be SPOT ON!

Josiphia Rizado: You are so right. In formulation classes i took, they taught us to include marketing products because they know people will buy. And most of those products contains a drop of them. People need to understand their hair and stop looking for the product miracle. If you know your hair is low porosity, avoid aloe, coconut and proteins ( do them on schedule) but if your hair is high po, dive in those ingredients.... . Great video sis

GlamFam Hair & Beauty: Great video Tonya! I always have to tell my clients not to purchase based on the smell, but purchase based on what their hair needs! Also, on that consistency tip, I always have to tell them to find a product that works and stick with it. Don’t bounce around from product to product just because they are trending. I hope you have a blessed weekend!

Lisa Scott: I'm 60. I've been natural since 2011. In 2020 I happened upon a hair tutorial which led to me learning a lot. Thankful to you young who many have put themselves on blast to tell their hair care story and knowledge. Prior to 2020 never had any real success with my hair, but learning about lighter oils especially and other techniques has allowed my hair in less than 1 year to be about a strong 10 inches which is something that has never happened. Since I'm old, all you young women are so beautiful! Thank you

Apara: Shhhh, dont be telling our industries secrets about the marketing ingredients...hahahaha . Mistakes people make: Expensive = better products. Not necessarily true. Sometimes you're just paying for the pretty packaging. Or the celebrity attached to it. I always tell people to focus more on the ingredients and not how "luxurious " it appears. Great video

Summer Miller: One mistake that I have been making is not washing my hair too often. I realized that the less frequently I wash my my hair the more dry my hair becomes and the more breakage I experience. Upon finding this out I began washing my hair once per week and it has been a game-changer for me. Initially it was my understanding that our hair does not like water , but that is quite the opposite.

Gloria A.: I could NOT see the importance of pre-pooing before a shampoo, nor deep conditioning afterward. It took me a quite a few of your videos to fully understand why they're so important. Now, many tangles, breakage, and tears later, I've finally learned my lesson. Thanks, Tonya, for your VERY informative videos. I look forward to them because you kept me from going bald.

Mochi Wulong: Hi Tonya! If hair grease is so amazing at sealing moisture, why would you need to moisturize you hair daily? I've read a lot of comments from people saying that using hair grease makes their hair moisturized for days (without the need of re-moisturizing ).

Ladybird: I spent money on overpriced products in the beginning. I've given away so many products that did nothing for my hair. Simplifying has helped me a lot. My hair is retaining length now.

renda terry: BELIEVING EVERYTHING I SEE ON YOUTUBE AT FIRST. BOUGHT TOO MANY PRODUCTS THAT DIDN'T WORK

Evelyne Desmangles: My mistake was not going to the Dermatologist soon enough. When I finally went for another issue I found out that my yeast norma flora was outta control. I also didn't really understand my hair and the natural shed. I thought my shedding was normal and my hair was thinning because I was getting old. I found out the hard way now I'm on my way to recovery and my hair is growing nice and thick again.

YummyCandi Collection: Great video!!! The one mistake I made during my journey was not moisturizing enough between wash days. My hair was dry and brittle which caused overall breakage. I went from moisturizing every 2 months to now every Sunday.

CuteNobi: 1) Focus more on functional ingredients vs. marketing ingredients 2)Figure out what your hair needs 3)Know proper technique

Rita: When I was newly natural, I tried a lot of oils / products I heard on YT that many people declared as GREAT. SERIOUS MISTAKE! Must try 1 product at a time. Kept wondering why my hair was matted/tight/kinked/knotted to the point I couldn't get a Denman brush through it. Finally realized it was the coconut oil.

NaptrulyMe: My mistake is using too much products. I tend to be heavy handed when using oils and or butter. My fine strands doesn't like too much of it. I'm learning to use it sparingly.

Jes 48: Looking at my hair type and not my porosity has been my biggest mistake. My hair has grown a great deal since 2016 but I haven’t been able to retain the length due to breakage. I now know my hair porosity (high) and I am learning about the importance of protein and moisture. Thanks so much for your advice!!

ms1src: Great tips, thanks! My biggest mistake early on was coloring my hair so that I could measure my hair growth.I just didn’t moisturize my hair as often as needed and it looked dull.

Tanya S: Love your outlook and expertise! Always useful information... thank so much for inspiring us in our hair journey!

Kitty Joy: Yes girl! Keep hitting us with this content! My biggest mistake was not paying enough attention to hair to figure out what the best products were! I can honestly say following some of your advice has done wonders! THANK YOU SO MUCH

Positive: GREAT TIPS. I definitely had fun in my journey (trying so...... many products).

Fedeline Jean-Philippe: Mistakes I’ve made: Lack of knowledge on my hair, not being consistent, not having a hair care routine, no techniques w/products on my hair. I haven’t permed or colored my hair since like a year ago. I’ve recently trimmed my ends two days ago. So ig I’m making progress.

Ileana Santamaria: My mistake years ago was taking the abundance and thickness of my hair for granted and considering hair care a chore. I have torn out headfuls of hair detangling too late (once, after a whole month of matting during a serious depression).

Kaylee Gill: I just started watching your videos, and I really appreciate that you take the time to go over the science behind hair care. I’ve been working on improving the health of my hair as well as growing it out. I’m curious about hair oils, but I have wavy hair. If you have the time do you mind telling me what oils would be light enough for my hair?

Lynnell Scott: Early on I didn’t understand the importance of pH to my high porosity hair and used shampoo bars. What I thought was soft hair was actually the damage the high pH of soap bars were doing to the cuticles of my hair by lifting them even higher than they already are.

TheRacqgrl769: The biggest mistake I made was waiting to get scarring alopecia treated. Thankfully, the treatments have helped me to keep my hair and it's growing very nicely. I could have greatly reduced the pain and suffering that comes with this condition.

Adora Howell: Natural hair is like a full time job. You can't take a day off

Felicia Dunn: Thanks for being so informative and helpful in your videos!

mrscoleo: Thank you for these videos. My biggest mistake I've made is listening to YouTubers who have a similar race or even with a defined curl thinking that meant they had my hair type, whilst wondering why my hair is always fizzy, not understanding that type 4 hair has curls too because hair typing blogs always said it didn't curl. I'd listen to 3b/3c YouTubers talk about products they were paid to discuss & go out buying it expecting the same heavy defined curl, honestly. When I listen to what my Nana & mum showed me while growing, my hair is healthier. Although in adulthood my lesson has been to understand hair isn't going to get healthy with products when I've got a lot of health issues internally & my medication has effected my hair health since. It's also been a confidence building exercise taking care of my hair in social media era. We have to remember genes play a role in hair growth & density. Love your own type of hair & speak nicely of it, it's owner is listening. I love how much you discuss proper informative ingredients, I've learnt for my own hair/skin it loves petroleum & silicones to create a hard external barrier as my hair is internally damaged due to collegen defect in my genes causing a connective tissue disorder & autoimmune disorders. I'd love to find a black haircare company targeting their hair products around ill health officially. If I had the ability/knowledge I would set this up myself.

Tashanique Lee: When I say I've been watching you nonstop for two days now! I done went and got my coconut oil to prepoo, my hemp seed oil and threw my essential oils in, Got me some peptides, and some avocado oil to seal! Also may I add that I've never seen a YouTuber with not one dislike on all there videos! Keep dropping the heat sis, my hair loves you

Cheryl Naylor: One mistake I made was becoming real lax with my hair care. During the covid pandemic, I stopped washing , moisturizing and doing my hair regularly. Because of this my hair became extremely dry, brittle, dull, damaged and I had so much breakage. Ten months later I decided to take back control or I was going to be bald. The best thing that happened, was I discovered your channel. I am loving all of the information. Mind you, I've been natural for 19 years. I thought I knew some stuff. Then you showed me, I really didn't. Thanks to you, my hair is on the mend because I have a wealth of knowledge to get me there.

Michele Richardson: Love your channel (MY FAV) You’ve helped so much with me creating my own products and my hair is flourishing. Thank you❤️

Naomi King: Please do a video on heat protectants!!

Teslyn Morris: Thanks for the video. Sound advice i will be adopting in my natural hair journey. I am still learning my hair. I am a year and a few months into my natural hair journey and I can say at this point the bloom is slowly coming off fhe rose. I am finding it very hard to be consistent as my hair gets longer. It's now shoulder length and i am struggling with maintenanace. It takes more time to detangle and wash which is seriously affecting my consistency. I am currently looking for a simplied method to detangle in particular. This would greatly lessen my wash day time and help me be consistent. Do u have any tips? My hair is medium porosity and high density. I don't find much content on this hair type. i guess because they feel everything can work for us.

Rosy Natural: Great tips and lessons as always.

Art Thomas: For WAY too long I'd flat iron my hair straight out of the shower. I did it maybe 8 times in the span of 2 years. She's (my hair) healthy now, but I obviously didn't care about her

Shiro Kairo: Great tips. You spoke abt daily moisturizing, do u apply grease each time? I love grease but having a hard time finding a shampoo that will remove product build up. Now since I've learnt shampoo is for the scalp "Is all grease created equal?" Does it matter whether i use Dax or blue magic indian hemp?

MsJaybee01: I made the mistake of not using products that work for my hair. I got caught up in using more otc products versus natural products such as rhassoul clay, Aloe Vera, coconut oil. etc. Bad idea. Now I am back to using what works for my hair and it is thriving.

Lilly Wants Her Anchovy Pizza: I spent way too much time following other people's hair routines. I never knew nothing about porosity or any of that. Now I'm back to trying out different things and listening to my hair. Porosity is kind of like a helper in your hair journey but it's not tell all. I think it's important to try different things out but if something works it works. I also enjoy using straight oils rather than buying a product that has seemingly only 2 drops of it in the entire container. That's helped my hair growth + health seemingly a lot.

Dominique O: Great video!! My mistake in the beginning was focusing on hair care while ignoring scalp care. My scalp did/does not like anything that was heavily fragrant. Nowadays I keep it simple and consistent

Latasha S: The one mistake I made was thinking that my hair was going to look like other ppl hair( when using the same products) to see if my hair was going to look a certain way...... But I have come to love my hair... I realized that my journey was mine and mine alone.

Jo-Gianna Hall: A mistake I made was to get my hair silk pressed then curl it with a flat iron. It was never the same

Buyi Mncube: I love how her video's are short but very much informative

Bohemian Chic Vibe: Ive made more than one!! Lol! 1. Dry combing 2. Not fully detangling before washing 3. Inconsistency in routine

Shena52: Not keeping a routine for wash day and moisturization. Love your channel.❤️‍♀️

pink rainbow kennelz: My hair care mistake in the past was reading the ingredients on the front of the bottle trying to figure out why the product didn't work in the first place.well duh the product on the front of the bottle was barely inside the bottle it's self because it was at the bottom of the ingredient list. So I went out and bought real almond oil and it worked spectacular when I go buy products that says almond oil on the front it look like I've been electrocuted I have 3b hair & my hair does not fall 4 that fake sht

_khepera_: @curlychemistry How should we manage our water spray bottles to minimize bacteria? Refrigerate, or fill and empty daily?

Monica M: My one mistake. Straightening. I was only doing it every three months for a trim. I didn’t have growth and there was a lot of breakage.

Flourish: I had oily hair and skin when I was younger, once I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and later graves disease I didn't change my hair care routine. Forever I had relaxed hair, used Wen and Carol's Daughter. I lived in Michigan and my hair was super health. Now for 6 yrs. I've been natural, and live in Arizona. I naturally have length, but I'm all dried out, and learning why, what and how to use products. I just want healthy hair I'm so glad I found you!!!❤

Jasmine: One mistake I made was thinking my hair was low porosity when it was actually high! I used that damn cup water test (wasn’t accurate for me) and it made me think my hair was low porosity so I treated my hair like it was. Needless to say, my hair did not agree, and it was ruined for a while but it bounced back once I realized

Kelsey T: Ooh can’t wait for the video on why products stop working on the hair after awhile. thanks for this video so many ppl need it.

Davetta Wilson: With virtual school and my work schedule getting routine together is hell. I really have to come up with a routine for my hair!!

Empyrea _254: Ah.....a new dose of hair wisdom

EmpressG 555: The mistake I’ve made is not using any protein products thus causing hydro fatigue! I’m still struggling to find the balance of how much and how often I need to use protein for my fine, low/medium porosity 3a/3b curls

KJAllen75: I have a question. How often are we to use shampoos and conditioners to gain the best benefits from them? For example, moisturizing, shine, curl enhancing. Is once or twice a week enough to gain the benefits?

Naomi Abrams: Hey Thanks for the video. I initially thought the video was going to be about buying hair (for braids, etc). A video on your thoughts on the chemicals, etc used in the production and preservation of hair used for braids and weaves. Are they safe, etc.

Annette Samuels-Davis: Not keeping a routine, styling before hair completely dry, not sealing after styling

Lesn1 Bgood: When you say moisturize every two days , what do you mean? How do you do that without ruining your style? Is water involved or just a cream/oil?

SHE McG: ✨ My biggest mistake is failing to keep a written record when I find a winning combination; I think I’ll remember and by the time wash day swings around again, I’ve forgotten ❓what worked! ‍♀️ Thx for the 411 regarding functionality! ‍ ✨

HrhSophia TheFirst: My biggest mistake as a relaxed girl was relaxing too frequently and not adding protein. Now I relax 2 to 3 times a year and use protein at least every 6 to 8 weeks.

Kearsten W: Can you tell me how to re-moisturize your hair when you're wearing a twist out?

CShemica: The 1st year of your natural hair journey is most likely just going to be a lot of trial and error. You're going to fail... Heat damage, color damage, wrong products for your hair etc. Kinda like if you get a car as a teenager you're going to wreck it... same thing. ‍♀️ I made all the mistakes hence this TWA I'm rocking right now. I think I've got it now tho.

Ana A.: A hair product mistake I made was buying items based on hype, because Devacurl absolutely destroyed my hair back in 2017. Never again.

or naamani: Can you explain how to moisturize the hair without washing it? I think one of the biggest mistakes i do now (student's life) is no consistency in taking care of my hair.. sometimes i just dont have the energy for it, i just wanna go to bed.

marian B: This was another good video...I have asked if you can do a video on formaldehyde in products? Is it something we should concern ourselves with, since we're on the topic of INGREDIENTS? If you cannot discuss this, then I will not ask you again...but thank you for ANY reply that you may have.

Soul Train: Thanks for always educating! I'd have to say too many products!

Gigi Reddick: Awesome video thanks for all of the valuable tips!!

Dana Fisher: I learned many years ago to check what the 1st 5 ingredients to decide if this is a product that may be good for my hair needs. Also, the order that those ingredients are in matters to my hair as well. That also extends to the order I put the products in my hair along with the technique. Biggest Mistake is lack of consistency , be it using the products ( washing/ cleansing consistently, Moisturizing consistently) or sticking with one routine especially when I find one that works I would just stop for no real reason. ‍♀️

iamsunflower2011: Honey when Linwood from Glam Fam said that he consulted with you, my ears perked up and I subscribed to your channel

Chandler Murphy: One mistake was dying my hair and not having a routine to wash my hair.

Licia Ann: I use to wash my hair everyday and I didn’t use heat

Liza Carelse: I can't always be consistent because of my depression.

Miranda Killgallen: Great tips

Shadow Diamond: Giiirl you ain't lying about consistency, that's my exact problem.

Tammy Gant: full of helpful info as always :)

Francine Maultsby: What grease is good to use to sealant with I stop using grease but i wanna incorporate it back in so I’m looking for a good grease can you recommend one please

Cari Cepeda: As always great information. Thanks*

CurlyNaturalesCommunity: I really love how Godlike you are Wishing to be like you in future

keisha scaife: This video is so refreshing!

Oyin Adeniyi: Can you do a video on the science of washing natural hair and how often to wash afro textured hair based on science?

MDK Gieskes: I'm not always consistent Love your channel, could you do a video about henna please

Ronel Sorgenfrei: Mistakes I have made in my journey ?... not paying attention and you mentioned it, being consistent with nighttime protection.

mamoyoT: Thanks sis. A video for alopecia of the CCCA type. Please.

Surayyah: I have a problem with moisturizing. I always feel like I'm putting leave in conditioner on top of already product build up hair . What styles are eay to moisturizer daily or often, im so lazy

Jennifer Beathea: Good video. Thank you❤

Bridget Vaughn: Comb my hair dry without using a detangling brush after wash day. That's my hair mistake

Blackberry- Rose: ❤️❤️❤️ Your Hair it’s so Pretty. Thank You All of Your Informational Content.

Josie: My biggest mistake I flatiron my natural hair

A.C: I found your channel thanks to glamfam. Very helpful.

Mel E: Do you know anything about Batana oil? I’ve heard it’s good, but it’s quite expensive

J C: Not being on a routine was a mistake of mine

Yerlen Jonson: For me was just read the ingredients in the front label

Ellakrane Uche: Pmp changed the game for meThank you ..I’ve learnt so much from you

CurlyNaturalesCommunity: What do you so if your hair is just too light?

classchyck: Can you please do a video on biotin for hair growth. Is it really worth buying.

Jo Green: Good tips

Samantha Austin: using henna destroyed my hair. and listening to a hair care guru who said use it twice a month.......starting all over again.

Mone: Thank you for your videos. Maybe you could find a way to improve sound, it would make your videos more convenient to understand

That cat in a hat: My mistake was using coconut oil as a moisturizer... t r a g i c

Roumy Roumy: What if you're a curly head and not using a protective style and a low-porosity too? How do you moisture every other day?!

Celeste Rose: Wrong move. I stop greasing and nourishing scalp after chemical relaxers. Was told I would be clogging scalp. That is misinformation. You must always nourish scalp to keep the scalp healthy for optimal hair growth. Lesson learned.
