In this video, i'm going to share five key tips that you need to know to help you spare your skin, your hair and your wallet this season. What'S good everybody, it's your main canaine back at it again! Anybody here from canada, anybody here thinking of moving to canada. Well, if you're thinking of moving up there, there's something you're going to need to know hi, i'm mel and up north here in canada, we are full-fledged in the winter time, so we are due to continue our cold curls series. I am excited because i'm going to share with you five affordable ways that you can continue to take care of your hair, this winter without breaking the bank or even buying a single thing, because you probably have all of these tools in your arsenal. I'M going to share with you how to use them, how to maintain your very own main from home. So without further ado, let's get to it to it. You know how we do it. My hair has been through it through it through it roll the clip roll. The clip snow aesthetic for me today the snow is progressing. It'S progressively getting worse my lashes. Sometimes you can just try your best and hope for the best, but my my bangs are paying off for dear life right now, when the hair on your head is rougher than the feeling of your legs. This season we have a problem so step number one. We are going to use a hot oil treatment for softening. This is one of the best most luxurious things that you can do for your strands as it will not only give them intense shine, but it will make your shampoo so much easier, because you're protecting those already dry and frail ends from getting any more friction. Any more dry and therefore causing any further damage, and we are going to diy this on top of that - that's really the only way. I know how to do a hot oil treatment. I also kind of find it really fun that we get to play. You know cosmetic chemists and make our own little hot oil concoction with your favorite oils that you do have at home. I'Ll share with you, my go-to concoction. I start off with the base of coconut oil. An alternative you can do. Is olive oil. I eat too much olive oil. I use it in my food too much so i'm going to keep that for food, but i love this in my hair for me and my high porosity strands, all right, coconut oil's in and that's how you know it's cold in here. Okay, she is solid, she's, firmer than me right now. Resolutions will start in the new year. Okay, thank you. If you have sweet almond oil, this is super softening and nice to add as well. Jojoba oil is also excellent because it's very friendly for the skin as well. I always said yo hoba, like yo, what's good hoba but yanoba, it's actually called jojoba jojoba oil and tis the season for a sweet, ol ho ho ho. You know like wow learning. Things is great and fun. I also throw in some red pimento oil. This is for strong roots and some good old, jamaican black castor oil only a little bit of this one, because she is thick. She is syrupy. She is potent she's, also a little bit. Stinky she's gon na kind of just a little bit funky you can absolutely throw in whatever essential oils you want. If you want very little, you don't need a lot, but i just keep it at this. Well, not quite at this. We have to add the hot to the oil, so take some water that you boiled add it to a bowl that is hot. The bowl is hot and sit your bottle inside now, while that warms up i'm going to suit up and that's more like it, let's get these earrings off because we are not about to play we're just gon na spray. You can fully massage this hot oil treatment into your scalp as well, but listen to your scalp. If you already naturally have an oily scalp, then that's not necessary for you. If you feel so inclined, you can even brush it through your strands or just use. Your fingers use a wide tooth comb. Let me tell you doing this now, as opposed to in the shower, when your hair is dry after shampooing, it's going to be way easier to detangle. The reason this works so well, especially when our hair is super dry, is because our hair, which is keratin, is lipophilic. It loves oils, it is oil attracting and with the right oils like coconut oil. These can penetrate pretty deep and really help to nourish your strands from the inside out, but also giving that protective coating that we're looking for for the shower. Remember, if i didn't make it clear this is a pre-shampoo treatment. Let me tell you the hair on this side. Pre-Oil super dry. I would never desere in a million years to try dry detangling, but i have got all this slip from this. Warm oil which is beautifully helping me detangle, hair oiling, has been done for centuries. A very common practice in east asia and indian cultures and the proof is in the pudding, because their hair is some of the longest healthiest shiniest that you will see now, if you feel so inclined to do so, feel free to also mix up different concoctions for Your scalp and your ends - maybe you have some hair oils that you like to include in your ends that you wouldn't want to do on your scalp. You may sleep with this overnight: just wrap it in a cap and if you want you can put some additional heat on that. But i honestly don't find it to be that necessary. Adding heat isn't going to do anything magical to the oils, except maybe melt them down and make them easier to apply to your hair, which we've already done. I leave this on for 10, 15 minutes an hour before my wash, and then i go ahead with step. Two in the winter time feel free to do more co-washing. Now there are many co-wash products that are now on the market and they originated from the idea of using conditioner to wash your hair. It'S what you can probably already do with your daily conditioner, not that you should do this daily. Let me just get that out there. This is not something you would do. Every shampoo! You still need to clarify, but if all the cleansers that you have are really cleansing kind of stripping and your hair is really dry, then strategically massaging your conditioner will help it to emulsify and give you a really nice gentle cleanse for your hair and scalp. And if you're wondering how that works? Well, that's because there's a lot of different ingredients that are in a conditioner conditioners, also creams lotions stylers. They contain ingredients called emulsifiers that when emulsified help to bind water and oil together, they're put in a product, so the product doesn't separate and it stays a really nice creamy consistency. But when you are using it in your hair and you're, adding a lot of water, you might have noticed before during your detangling that a conditioner can get really almost soapy and bubbly. That'S because, with the right amount of water and some good massaging you're going to help to break down those oils and wash them away with water, which is going to give you that gentle cleanse try washing your hands with your conditioner, adding lots of water and see What i mean see if you can get any cleansing, because with a lot of massaging my hands feel clean after even washing them with the conditioner. That'S crazy right! It'S science back to the lab and we're back for step three without the beat tip number three happens to do with the styling. Now the reason why i am faceless the man with a face, so they call me the man with the brace been there done that no cap, any news when we are styling, which is, of course, a really important part in your whole hair routine. To make sure that your hair is being well kept, is by making sure that we're following through with the proper steps this may include, but is not limited to prepping, with a leave-in conditioner for the hair. Is anybody in there? It'S in my hair, then, following up with the hair styler of your choice, whether that be a curl activator heat protectant, gel whatever need be, those aren't even the most important things back to being budget friendly. Remember that time is money now i personally i mean i'm doing this routine at night and in the winter. I want to give my hair enough ample time to be completely dry before i go outside. Otherwise i have not properly finished the hair. Prep style finish. It is very important to properly fully dry the hair and then finish it before you go out. There never skip your finishing oil unless you're going to bed, which is what i'm going to do right now and do this uh in the morning, which i will share. My next chip, all right now, where were we, we were back with the fresh beets and we were finishing. This is in fact the step that cannot be skipped in order to keep your hair healthy in the winter, we're taking a hair oil. Now a hair oil is going to be different than your raw oils that we cook with in the kitchen and that we use for pre-poo. Because if you look at the coconut oil and if you also look at things like shea butter, if you put those raw oils and butters in your hair in the winter they're going to kind of solidify on your hair and they leave it feeling really gross and Gunky and heavy and not ideal, so i like taking a hair oil, preferably one, that's a little bit thicker a little bit more serum-y and not a very lightweight oil, because i want that coating over my hair and no these do not have to be expansive. I am sure by now, especially if you watch this channel, you have some sort of hair oil at this point and if you don't well, then now you should and boom. Okay. My hair is fully dry. She'S, serum and she's almost ready to go fomo tip number. Four for keeping your curls safe and healthy in the winter is by taking that same bonnet that you wore to bed or a hair scarf, and wrapping these under the hat that you choose to wear to keep your head top warm. This is not only going to keep your curls from becoming as flat under the hair, but it's also going to help reduce frizz and flyaways from the friction under your hat, because this cotton, worn material, will not be able to absorb the moisture from your hair. It is really the hat easy so seriously, don't feel obligated to go out and buy satin lined hats when you can make your very own at home with what you get the best part about utilizing. Silky accessories. Is that they're going to be the most gentle on your hair? The moment i see snow, i tuck my curls into my hood to prevent them from getting snowed on and also to prevent the wind from getting to them. There are many factors that contribute to damage on your hair from the winter time and pretty much all of them have to do with the weather. Sometimes we can't really avoid it, however, so for my tip number five, my absolute top tip for refreshing in the winter. This one is a little controversial i like to use steam, that's right by concentrating good old water vapor from my facial steamer or you can use your clothing steamer a kettle whatever works for you. This is what i like to use in order to refresh my hair. It helps to kind of infuse my hair with moisture. Now this is where the controversial part is because remember how i said our hair is lipophilic. It loves oils. Our hair strands naturally contain one to nine percent of fatty lipids and it doesn't naturally contain water. Water is not really good for our hair. Moisture is not the best for our hair, although we love it for curly. Hair. Healthy hair is naturally hydrophobic. If you've got a healthy cuticle, it wants to lock out all moisture it's low porosity resistant. Hence why, when you have really damaged hair, it's really not a good idea to wash it very frequently, because, especially when we soak the hair with water, we're stressing out the strands but back to steam steam is not quite wetting, the hair, it is putting it in A humid environment, it is concentrating hydration near the hair without actually wetting the strands, and if you try it out, you will feel an instant softening when the moisture is by your hair, to which i then like to add a leave-in conditioner, maybe a refreshing spray. Maybe a little extra gel or just a serum, on top to kind of lock all that moisture in in order to refresh hair that has been exposed to the elements it really makes a decent difference enough to spare you another one, two, maybe even three days before Washing again, where this whole process can start over five simple steps: five things to include in your wash day routine throughout the winter that you probably already have your arsenal. Let'S recap: shall we pre-poo hot oil treatments washing with conditioner finishing with an oil or serum, protecting your hair from the outdoors, and we like to keep it hot and fresh with a little bit of steam for refreshing? So now that you have seen these tips, you know my secrets for success in the winter as a true canadian gal just six more months until the warm weather, oh canada, let me know what else you would like to see from me. Tatyanna Hayward: Tip #1: Hot Oil Treatment (1:36) Tip #2: Co-Washing (5:59) Tip #3: Styling (7:33) Tip #4: Protecting Your Hair Outside (9:56) Tip #5: Refreshing (11:06) For those who rewatch videos months later and forget like me

Nicole Murr: Mel must be protected at all costs! We love you! Always coming through with the fire content

Emily: Let me just say a HUGE thank YOU to you ladies for these educational videos. I have learned about curly hair even more which gave me to confidence to style my older seesters hair (which I have never seen curly in the past 13 years). I used all the techniques youve taught us and she loved how her hair turned out, she’s now styling her beautiful curls herself and I felt like a proud curl mom!! So thank you!!

Li Ba: Can you make a video for a minimalist curly hair routine? All of these products add up to be pretty expensive and if you could narrow it down to a few that would be awesome! You can even do a high end and a low end version (or a mix if you want to). It gets so confusing with all of the different products out there on what's necessary and what we could skip out on. Much thanks for everything you do!!!

Nikki D: As an Indian Canadian, thank you for the recognition that the hot oil treatment is a common practice there. Growing up, my mom would often massage my scalp and hair with warm coconut oil.

Becca D.: The seesters are the reason why I survived finals this semester. Sounds funny, but you two make me laugh, which I desperately needed during this time. Also, the seesters helped me grow more confident and love my hair. I basically watched almost all of your YouTube videos and am looking forward to more texture Tuesday’s. Thank you so much. Happy holidays!

Hannah Anderson: Your Barbie shirt when you're steaming your hair is THE BEST! I want one!! Also, steaming hair has been a game changer for me this year. It is basically how I get all my curls to fall down every morning after being in a bonnet at night. One question though: if I'm doing a different pre-poo treatment (like Curlsmith bonding salve), should I also do the oil? Or should those be on different wash days?

Jazmin Jordan: I live in a humid climate. I definitely do tip #4 with wearing my silk scarf under my beanies. I haven't done a hot oil treatment in awhile, so I need to do some this winter. Great video, Mell and Amanda!

Bunnies and Beyond: Love the darker hair on you Mel! Such a beautiful color! Thank you for the great tips! Going to be trying this tonight

Angie CT: Mel & Amanda, I did an entire AG Hair (except leave in) wash day yesterday. I have to admit...you were right. The products rock and my curls are on fire! The smells are very strong at first but they don't last long so it is okay. I used the Thikk shampoo & conditioner and I have volume! First time ever. So a thumbs up from my super fine, medium porosity, medium density hair.

Kim Ramirez: Yes girl Yesss it’s starting to get colder here in NY. I tried the hot oil treatment last year and it did wonders ! ❤️ love ya

Kiki Lapoop: I have a video request if you're interested. Recently brad mondo rated curly girl routines, it would be cool to see your opinions on it, knowing you're very knowledgeable on it. Just a fun suggestion! Also I loved these winter tips

Sahouma MOR-NL سهومة المغرب-هولندا: God!! More than 1,2k views and just 38 likes!!! People, your finger will not be cut if you press the Like , there is no one better than Mel to share with us right infos and tips! Thanks Mell ☺️ big fan from a Moroccan-Dutch

Niky147: Love you Mel! You have helped me sooooooo much with my hair. I’m the ONLY person with curls (or who wears them natural) in my family. Thank you so much!

A.M.J: I live in a desert climate, and even though it's "winter" now, it's even drier than before (especially since ACs are still on all the time indoors)! Maybe the some of the same principles can apply, I always wondered why adding more water made my hair even frizzier.... I'm going to try some of these anyway and see how it goes <3

Dana Hebeler: Mell and Amanda, you are truly my curly hair gurus! Your videos have really helped me to love my hair! I truly get so many compliments now since following your tips and tricks!! Also, I love the bloopers!! Mell you are hilarious!! Merry Christmas!!

Lynzi Collins: Happy texture Tuesday!! Thank you so much for brightening up the week as always!! Can't wait to watch ❤️

Taylor Quinlan: I love that Aussie hair oil! It’s thick, cheap and smells amazing! Their refresh spray is my favorite as well. I like to mix both together in my hands then scrunch the mixture into my hair on days I need to refresh.

Velvet Figueroa: Came for the hair tips, stayed for the editing

Minna Uyeda: Love doing the hot oil treatments. I use red pimento, jojoba and the lavender scented black castor oil. Let it sit while I take an Epsom salt soak, smells amazing and great for a spa experience.

Tanairi Mastarreno: I'm loving the pink look! Thanks for the reminder 2 do a oil treatment! This winter in New York is no joke. Happy holidays seesters!

Golda Levin: Love your generosity, your tips and your make up in this tutorial. Thank you and Happy New Year. :)

Suzie Althens: I live in Alaska and we have about two more months of winter than you. It's painful for curly hair. Love your suggestions! Gonna make myself a little silk bandanna for under those hats! And my hair LOVES shea butter. I melt it between my hands and rake it through, have a cup of coffee and wash it out. So soft!

Nikki D: Great tips! Protective styling buns, braids important too. I tried the steam thing once, I feel like I lost the curl pattern/definition with the steam.

Tanja: Your curls are popping , with all the shine ✨ perfect spirals, coils .. assignment understood.. ❄️ Happy Holidays

catdog dogcat: I love this! Appreciate the budget friendly oil ideas. My hair is super dry right now, perfect timing. And I have most the diy ingredients. Btw Canada looks freezing.

Stephanie Kenney: I still in my first year of my curly hair journey and am missing a couple items in my winter arsenal. So without further ado this desert girl's got some shopping to do. Thank you so much! Very helpful!

sarahthegr8er: Great tips. The bonnet/silk under the cap is genius

Kellz Willz: I got a facial steamer because of you and I really love it to refresh. Great idea for the hats!

Marissa Lorraine: Your hair looks absolutely insanely gorgeous this round!

Je Ka: Thank you, great video. I'm transitioning for 4 month now and love my waves&curls. The only challenge I have is refreshing. No matter what I do, the moment I hit my hair with water or steam or mousse it's a frizzy mess. Any suggestions?

Sarah Reay: Mel your eyeliner looks absolutely gorgeous

Kelly Eggers: It would be awesome to hear your thoughts and the Chi silk infusion line. That’s what I mainly use because it doesn’t break my skin out. I use the silk infusion leave in treatment as my finishing oil and I’m wondering if that’s right or should I just use the silk shine spray by chi. I love Chi products but it’s confusing sometimes. Thanks!

Melina Sica: With some delay! Finally able to watch this video such a hectic week but this helps me for my next wash day which is on Saturday. Talk about perfect timing thank youu for educating me on my curls❤️

Christina Michael: I can’t thank you enough. Winter time I just give up and straighten my hair. I have a hair goals for my curls and I want to cut out heat. So all this information is so much appreciated

Curly Leticia: Thank you so much for these tips because lately I feel like my hair is struggling. This winter is really doing it.

Kendyl Cohn: Love the content and your energy is wonderful as always! The editing was very different on this one and I think having more visuals is fun and great! But it was a bit too frequent of cutaways that made it a bit distracting for me and made it hard to focus on what Mel was saying. Love y'all!

Jordan Faith: Also I’m totally living for this color in your hair. I want a fun color too

Deanna: Happy Texture Tuesday!! So excited to watch!! Much love and happiness!! ❤ Xoxo

Christina: I can’t wait to try this! You are the best (and Amanda is a brilliant editor) You had mentioned on Instagram that you put a temporary color in your Eva NYC conditioner. Can you show us how you do that?

AriAvenger: Mel I had a question. So my hair has been experiencing A LOT of breakage and honestly has been the same length for the past 2 years. I’ve been taking good care of it, but the breakage persists. Im now thinking it’s my tangle teezer could be the culprit. Is this a possibility?

Ruth Kuder: Made my day once again! TGITT! Thank you Mel & Amanda.

Mysti Fett: This video was really helpful. My hair has been dry lately and now I know why. Thank you.

Mercades: These are such great tips! Thanks Mell! ❤

JoAnne Hutt: Love this video!! I ashamed to say I have never did a hot oil treatment since my V05 hot oil i tried as a teenager. Would those work just as well? I only have finishing oils on hand, like Verb ghost, curlsmith bonding oil etc. Thanks for always bringing the best content to us curlies!!

Laura Spangler: You know what, once in a while if my hair feels super oily and I’m only at about day 4 or 5 (I wash my hair now once a week) I will kinda of rinse my hair and do a light wash with a little conditioner and it DOES feel a lot better!

Jesus Loves YOU: Hello u adorable snow bunny!! ❄ I love these tips and reminders. My hairs r so fragile now! Hairs and I thank you ❤

Lurdes Pullan: Hi Mel Thank you so much for all the tips!!! I just move from the dry climate in the state of Utah to the Humid state of New York! My curly hair is struggling Please help

Flor L. Delgado: Another great video, Mell! Question: You only used Co-Wash to remove the oils?

abbi: Thank you so much for your videos! Love them. I watch and rewatch them! How about a video about a cast. Your hair always looks to have a great cast at the end of diffusing. No matter what gel I use at then end, my hair really doesn’t have a hard cast ‍♀️

SLAMSwan: I needed this video today. Thanks, Mell!

That's Chaos, Baby: Hi Mell! Is it possible to let us know at what point it is considered to be dry enough (what percent humidity) that we should switch to our glycerin-free products? Thank you!

Sammi F: I would love to see a video about how to take care of children's curls. I feel like I started on this curl journey to learn more about how to care for my daughter's curls properly, but ended up learning so much about my own hair in the process! I often wonder if I should be using the pricier products like Aveda on my girl's curls, and if that's necessary. Anyways, thank you for another awesome and informative video! Love this channel, I've learned so much!

Natalie Quintana: Your tips are amaziiinggg… cant wait to try this hot oil treatment cocktail for my hair !!

Saddo: Hey mell, sorry to bother you but could I suggest making a video: finger rolling vs ordinary curl brush (the one with loads of bristles, not the deman brush, just an ordinary one from a supermarket/shop)

Danielle Kirkpatrick: I have straight hair but I've noticed since I've started working my hair has started changing and the store I work at can have a harsh AC so I'm here hoping this helps

Jan Ll: Hi Mell, I love your videos! They are informational and entertaining, to say the least. ❤️ However, I need your help! After I wash my hair, I sometimes let it air dry. When I do this, my roots are flat and oily-looking. Can’t move my hair around because it looks weighed down. The rest of my hair looks dry and frizzy. If I diffuse, it looks ok, but curls on roots are flat and all around frizzy. I don’t know what I need to do? Please help! For reference: Rizos curls shampoo & con. Or NYM curl definition con (pink bottle), Rizos curls detangle spray mixed with their curling cream right after the shower.

Rosey Sam: Hey Mel! Just discovered your channel today and lemme just say that on top of your amazingly helpful content, I ❤️LOVE❤️ yur vibe & personality!!! Thanks a bunch for all your work and thoughts that yu do to make these video for us I just have a question, are you still using VERB shampoos and conditioners on your daily bases or you've changed them this year? & Are there a more affordable alternatives for this brand?

Jasmine Rocha: I’ve been needing this!

Maria: I love the color of your hair and your make up is BEAUTIFUL!!!

Courtney Stanley: Canadians ftw (specifically Ontarians) and I super appreciate the tips!!

Heyyyyy: I have straight hair and I use the big bottles of ogx coconut milk shampoo and conditioner then the coconut oil spray in the summer and the coconut miracle oil in winter. The scent lasts on my hair for 3 days everyone says my hair is sooo shiny and smells soooo good.

Calebthabest: Love the info and your energy is fantastic!!

Heather Sambrook: Love it! ... And this gives me hope. She has exactly the same kind of hair as me, except mine is damaged and a bit neglected. Haha

Kimberly Hazy: I can’t wait to try this!!! But girl I really hope that was not your leg hair! thank you for brightening my Tuesday.

Adriana Perez Solorio: Mell, could you review the new shark hair dryer? And possibly do a comparison to the dyson?

Victoria: You bring all this amazing knowledge with so much pizazz. So fun to watch.

Merve Çaral: Every time %90 percent of your products mentioned in the video don't exist where i live but still keep watching anyways

Jordan Faith: Amazing tips as always!!

Deanna Ramirez: I love your videos and I wish you could send some of that cold weather our way. I live in Texas on the gulf coast and we've had the warmest December in recorded history!.... after having that freak freeze back in February. Nothing but 80 degrees and muggy, uggy, humidity!

Sara M.: You really got me hooked on the Verb Ghost Oil and I'm loving it!!! Thank you so much!

daphne715bu: This was super helpful!!! THANK YOU SEESTERS!!! <3

Colleen Cathrae: With my just bast shoulder length, fine, wavy hair I put it up in a bonnet on top of my head and then the hat over top. Seems to work the best when I am outside with my 4 year old.

snowflakes215: I safety pinned an old black satin bonnet in my white winter hat…and this gal don’t care! I love it! ❄️

Carla Oliveira: I live for the last couple of minutes with the “bloopers”

Carolyn J Rubin: Love the makeup look!

tha Avi: Okay but this hair style is giving me the vibes I need to motivate myself to wash my hair LOL

Ebony-Savannah Hudson: MELL!!!!! Thank you for thiiiiiis!!!!!! Ugh, one of my favs (you and Amanda) !!!!

ashley ocasio: Love this video!! Just one question, I do the hot oil treatment religiously In The winter because my scalp screams at me! It soo dry, itchy and flaky. The only thing that calms it down is oiling my scalp along with my hair. Now I know you mention to watch out with oiling the scalp but I can’t seems to go a wash day with out. Any tips for me to avoid build up? Should I be doing something different? I try to wash my hair every 5-7days…

Thedorient10: Due to heating and the coldness from outside it can cause dandruff and incresed sebum production. My hair would be very oily when doing a hot oil treatment and following only with conditioner. I‘d use a very gentle shampoo on my scalp and deep condition afterwards.

May: I’ve been trying my best to transition to my natural wavy hair. It’s been 5 years and counting without my hair even once seeing heat or manipulation and it still looks like trash. Never clumps, dead roots, never holds a pattern. Just nothin. Surely it would be better if I just went bald.

Jules YEG: your lipstick though girl ! yes ! and your eye look is flawless! You are killing this vibe!

yasmine: 8 MINS AGO!! I LOVE U GUYS SM thank u for helping me embrace my curls! <3
