If you've ever wondered how the winter weather affects your hair, you can consider this video a brief intro to winter hair care. I will be shedding light on why you get dry winter hair, and tips for how you can prevent breakage and maintain moisture. One key cause of breakage in the winter is detangling, so I partnered with tangle teezer to demonstrate the importance of gentle detangling and using the right brush for your hair type. This video is short and sweet but it does contain a couple key winter hair care hacks you don't want to miss.

Hey guys afroper here your favorite trichologist and hair science content creator in this video. I'M super excited to be partnering with tangle teaser. To talk to you guys a little bit more about how to minimize breakage and promote moisture retention, especially given the weather that we're currently having honestly guys send help and preferably in the form of a plane, to get somewhere warm because yeah. Whilst we plan our escape to the tropics, however, we do still have to come to terms with the realities of how the cold weather affects our hair. Here and now, or should i say, hair and now sorry guys it was, it was right there i had to now two of the most common effects that the winter weather has on our hair is decreased access to moisture and increased fragility of the hair. As a result - and ultimately this can lead to an increased rate of hair breakage that, let's be frank, no one wants now here's exactly how this sequence happens on a fundamental level, the amount of moisture that is in your hair will be determined by the amount of Water that there is in the air around you and when it comes to the weather. The dew point refers to the temperature at which the air around you reaches the maximum amount of water that it can hold at this temperature. Any excess amount of water that is in the atmosphere then has to find somewhere else to go. Hence you get things like well do where the water that can't be stored in the air then begins to gather on things like grass or windows. You'Ll also notice things like the colder. It is the more dew you have, which is why you tend to have things like morning and or evening due when the temperature is typically the coolest that is going to be during the day. So how exactly does this interact with the hair? Essentially the lower the dew point - temperature, the less water that the air can hold the less water? The air can hold the less moisture your hair can access from the air. This obviously, then leads to a lower moisture content in the hair, which can ultimately then cause the hair to be more fragile. All of this, of course, is in the absence of you applying anything to your hair to offset this process so dew points lower than 10 degrees centigrade are typically considered dry air. Now i live in london and it's currently mid afternoon. So this is probably the warmest. It'S going to get today so how about we have a look at what the dew point today is yeah, so dry. You can almost hear the crisp. Oh, my bad guys, i'm getting carried away. Let me bring it back real quick now, when the hair is appropriately moisturized, it's more pliable and can withstand the things that cause the general wear and tear that could otherwise lead to hair breakage, especially when it comes to the basic things like detangling. Now i'm gon na be honest. We can't really do anything to change the weather, but that doesn't mean that there's nothing that we can do. One of the best things that you can do to prevent breakage in this case is to make sure that you are using the appropriate detangling tool for your hair type. I mean this is generally important, but if there was ever a time where it was imperative, it would be now. The last thing that you want to do is either opt for a brush. That is either a you're going to put too much tension on your strands. That it causes them to snap and or break or b, be too weak to actually properly detangle your hair, such that it's leaving knots and tangles that will equally lead to yep. You guessed it breakage, thankfully, tangle tees have made this super easy for us and they've designed a whole range of brushes to suit. Literally, every single hair type handle every single possible detangling scenario that there could be if you've got long, hair, wavy, hair, thick hair, curly, hair, kinky hair, there's a brush for you heck if you're not even sure what kind of hair type you have. But all you know is that you have hair guess what their brush is for you too. Now this next brush hits pretty close to home for me as a trichologist, if you're somebody who typically is prone to a scaly and or flaky scalp or you're, somebody who just wants to make sure that you get rid of your scalp buildup on your wash days, Then the latest addition to the tangle, teaser lineup might be of interest to you. This incredible scap, exfoliating brush was designed with teeth to help loosen stubborn flakes, as you shampoo, that your fingers, otherwise just wouldn't be able to get to budge. Not only are the primary bristles firm but flexible enough to displace scalp flakes gently without damaging the scalp or surrounding hair. The brush also has shorter, firmer teeth on either side to massage and stimulate the scalp. At the same time, if your flaky scar, remedy lineup needs that extra boost, then this might very well be the final missing piece and if you're not gon na, take it from one trichologist how about from a whole international congress of trichologists. So for my midweek detangle and style refresh, i'm going to go in with both of these wet detanglers, specifically designed for thick curly coily textured hair. But the first thing i'm gon na do is mist my crusty hair with some water just to make it a bit more pliable and less fragile. Now the goal here is to bring the moisture levels in the hair back to appropriate levels and not to make it excessively damp or soaking wet, because going too far in the other direction can make your hair equally as fragile. And that would defeat the point. Wouldn'T it and that's why i actually really like these fine mist spray bottles, because the mist is fine enough to mimic a natural increase in humidity in the air around you and prevents you from going too far in the wrong direction. But the next thing i'm going to do is apply a detangling leave-in for slip and conditioning to make the hair more manageable to brush through and also so that i can further mitigate against potential breakage from the detangling process and today i'll be using tangle, tee's, detangling Cream spray for this part, and now that my hair is appropriately moisturized and conditioned i'm going to start going through with the naturally curly wet detangling. Now. The first thing i noticed about these brushes is just how gentle they were. I'M not gon na lie. I was a little bit wary just because of how much hair i have and how gentle the bristles are. I wasn't really too sure that they were going to be able to do anything, but i was really pleasantly surprised. Not only was i able to fully detangle my hair, but i also found that i wasn't losing as much hair and there definitely wasn't anywhere near as much tension on each section of hair that i was detangling as there. Otherwise would have been the one thing that i will say, though, about these brushes is again because of how gentle they are. You want to make sure that you are doing this in small enough sections: you're not going to be able to detangle half or a quarter of your head with one stroke of the brush, especially if you have thick and or thick curly, coily hair. But what i did find really helpful was, especially as i got to the top of my head to try and get it to be super sleek and brush all the way down. The handle on the wet daytime really really went a long way to making sure that i had a good amount of tension without pulling too hard, and that's it a simple, easy way to keep your hair protected and minimize breakage during the winter months. Now, lest we forget, it is love week. Look at me guys, i'm clearly ready are you. I figured seeing as i was pleasantly surprised by the tangle teaser brushes. Afope Atoyebi: I know I'm supposed to be on a fortnightly upload schedule, but I had to come through and share the love with this Valentine's giveaway! I'M CURIOUS - How many of you guys have tried Tangle Teezer brushes? What are your thoughts? Before this video I hadn't tried them (despite having my eye on them for aaaaaages).

Li Hakeem: Your content is amazing and you are too funny. Don’t have a tangle teaser, headed out to buy that shower brush today. The vibrating shower brush I have is constantly slipping out my hand. Nobody needs all that vibrating in the shower. Lol! Can you please help us with a video on Hair Supplements. So many on the market, we don’t know where to start Nutrofol, Viviscal, Hairfinity, blah blah blah. We need a hair supplement video broken down like the Deep Conditioner video. Your Deep Conditioner for High Porosity Hair video (2020) is sooo great! I still pull that video up every time I’m in the store shopping for conditioner.

ZeeCurlGirl: I love my tangle teezer!! I also LOVE that you’re posting again! We missed you ❤️

Felicia Dunn: I just started finger detangling and using a detangling brush. My hair is not thick at all so I try to preserve what little hair I do have. Thank you for sharing this wonderful video.

Jermaine Au Natural: Love the break down of how and why the winter dry winter air affects our hair and love this colab!!

Mary Linda: I love your channel. You and Dr. Dray have cleared out so much smoke mirrors that's so dominant in the beauty industry. THANK YOU!!!!

Crys: I recently remembered that I was subbed to this channel but I've never left a comment. Just dropping by to say a huge thanks. When I look back, it's absolutely the advice I got from you that meant the most to managing the health of my hair. Who knew hair needed humectants? Or how to properly manage how much protein I was using? What's my anemia got to do with anything?? What is a chelating shampoo and why do I need to know her??? I was also coming back from 10months of illness where I'd neglected my hair in totality because I was simply in too much pain to deal with it, and I was in a really bad place mentally. Even prior to that, all anyone ever told me was how thick, dry and difficult my hair was - my own mother would compare it to the sahara grasses! And now my hairdresser tells me that people would commit murder to have my hair I will be forever grateful

nkjv12: The scalp exfoliator is amazing for washing hair and jeering your scalp clean in braids/twist without ruining the style

Momof2cuties: Hi! I just found your channel and have watched every one of your videos. You are phenomenal ❤️ I have a question would you advise to use a heat protectant when diffusing a wash and go? I typically wear a wash and go 1 month and I do use moisturizer, leave in and a styler. But I’ve always wondered if the heat protectant is necessary

Jariellla: Thank you so much! I love your channel and I feel like it’s the only one out there with accurate information! Really appreciate it

Tee DoubleU: I'm here because winter is at the door here in South Korea. Thank you for all this amazing content, Afope

Berta Llop i García: Do you recommend using cocount milk on hair? :) pd: I love your brows

Lina Zapata: I just got my Tangler Tezzer brush and scalp massager; have used them once and I love them!

Jariellla: Hi again Just wanted to ask if you have any advice to thicken extremely thin hair. I had an eating disorder and it all fell out and I now have bald spots which makes me really insecure. I’m also a student on a budget so I’m really trying to find cheapish but decent products here in South Africa ❤️

Mk: I have two of them...they rip my hair in shreds. I'm still keeping them because i think there might be a learning curve to using them...‍♀️‍♀️

Ref Moyo: Obsessed with your videos what are your thoughts on texture release ‍♀️

Hannah Jay: Have you heard about the rosemary water trend? Would love to hear your thoughts about it if you have any

vicky fox: You ARE my favourite Trychologist

S J: thank you for the video :) du you mean that we shouldn't detangle in the shower? Because you said too wet hair can be as fragile as dry hair

Tenisha B: can you address thinning edges?

Jasmine Spice: Hey Afope is this how you wear your hair on a regular basis as a protective style during the winter? What hairstyle do you usually wear for hair growth and protection?

Stephanie Saunders: I was gonna request a video on how to adapt your haircare when you change climates I am in Jamaica where it's hot and humid allll year round. I'm about to go to somewhere much colder and drier and last time I did that my hair freaked the heck out

uberhaute_naturalz: Lagos is very hot; extremely hot! I have to change clothes more than 3 times a day. I bought the knock off from Ali Express because it's not available in Nigeria. It broke the first day

Esela Segbefia: what are products/chemicals/ingredients we should use in the winter

lori wicker: Thank You for this video.

Priscilla Dadzie: I've tried two of their wet detangler brushes and they both rip my hair... I just had to stop and find another alternative

Melyssa James: Love your hair style. What did you use to slick your hair down?

Claudia Smith: You broke my Canadian Heart ❤❤ Just kidding....❤❤❤

Alexis Rushlow: Canadian over here wishing it was 4 degrees lol amazing video !

CurlyNella1011: Your nails are beautiful

Curating The Culture With Dr.SheCole : FLORIDA is great right now, tropical...but politically it's a risk that you would step back in time. Protect your voter's card and First Amendment Rights!

ㄹㅅㄹ: I had to google what 12 degrees Celsius is in Fahrenheit. That is so warm!

wendy gumbs: I wil like to be in the valentine giveaway ,

Destinee Quinton: Promo`SM!!

Laura: 0:01 yes you are!

Tama: Have faith in JESUS CHRIST as LORD and SAVIOR for HE SAVES from hell❗️ *What is the Gospel?* The true gospel is the good news that God saves sinners. Man is by nature sinful and separated from God with no hope of remedying that situation. But God, by His power, provided the means of man’s redemption in the death, burial, and resurrection of the Savior, Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2:8-9 For it is by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of GOD, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. Romans 10:9 9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. JESUS CHRIST can come anytime! Just Believe ❤️ Love you and GOD BLESS
