Hi, my name is Elizabeth, and today I wanted to show you how I cut my own hair, so to start off, you're going to first need a few things: you're going to need a wide toothed comb or a hairbrush design to use on wet hair, which I'll Be using the wet brush you're also going to need a pair of scissors designed to cut hair I'll, be using these tweezerman scissors and I'll link them below. But I would definitely recommend using scissors designed for cutting hair. It makes a huge difference and I would not cut my hair if I wasn't using ones specifically to cut hair and you're, also going to need just a regular hair tie so to go ahead and get started. You want to take your freshly washed hair. I just washed mine with shampoo and conditioner, and I put just a little bit of some argan oil in the end, just to make sure they were smooth, because I do have split ends, which is why I'm getting my going to cut my hair today. So you're. Just going to brush through your hair, making sure you're getting all the tangles or knots out and then you're just going to start making sure you're brushing it straight back on the top of your head you're going to brush straight back and move along the side of Your head on both sides then you're, going to flip your head over and continue brushing your hair straight forward. Then you're going to begin gathering your hair to form a ponytail at the front of your forehead or at the top of your forehead. I'M going to make sure that this hair stays straight. It'S going straight forward and the sides are going to the sides like. So if you have any bumps make sure to brush them out. Okay and now I'm going to take your elastic and secure your hair right at the top of your forehead. So my band is very close to my forehead and then just brush through the ponytail, making sure it's nice and straight. And this is why it's called the ponytail and I called the unicorn method. So then, I make sure that the hair from the back of my head is ... on top of the ponytail, and I kind of make it into like flat like so it's straight like this. Okay, once I have it straightened out, I take it pretty parallel to my forehead, where coming out - and I place my fingers to about where I want to cut it off. I keep my fingers there and since I'm going for a deep V cut in the back, I want my longer hair to be in the back of my head and I want it to kind of frame around my face for the shorter end right here. So I'm going to cut my hair on an angle, the more severe of the angle, the shorter the front pieces will be so make sure you keep that in mind with the total length that you're cutting off. So I keep my fingers parallel to my head and then I just very carefully cut and I just start cutting very slowly. Okay, so I have cut only a small amount. This is usually the longest that I'll actually cut off at one time. I definitely recommend cutting a very little bit when you're starting off and checking the links and checking the cut to see. If you cut it correctly and if you like it, then again, I'm just checking making sure it looks pretty straight. Then I just go in and point cut a very little amount just to clean it up and I'm going to remove my ponytail and we'll fluff it out and you can see how it's shorter in the front and longer in the back all right. So I'm going to go and dry and straighten my hair, so you can actually see what it looks like when it's dry. Okay. So now I have dried and straighten. This is kind of what it looks like if you can see how it's shorter in the front, with some layers around my face and then it's longer in the back, and I still got to keep all my length and there is a little bit of layering in The front so thank you so much for watching. I hope you enjoyed this video and I'll see you all next time. Bye,

Kiki Crochet Patterns: I just did it on my curly hair! Awesome result!!! Thanks!

Baby Sweet: I just did this. Literally 5 minutes ago. Needless to say, I will never go to a salon again unless I'm wanting my hair colored. This turned out wonderfully. I am beyond happy with my result. My hair is VERY thick and wavy I've cut two years of damage and split ends off myself. For free. Thank you so much for sharing

Laura Soto: As a hairdresser myself for over 25 years, i can say you did a great job!!!

Bike Angel 777: So I totally did this and ended up taking 6 inches off my extremely long hair. IT LOOKS AMAZING . It looks like a salon did my hair and my daughter's hair! Thank you! For saving me my hair is still really long too but now it's styled.

Melissa Bernatchez: This is the first tutorial where I feel 100% confident using the technique explained. You are a very good teacher!

mimi: A few days into quarantine and I got bored and did this.... I cut off two or so inches first, and it turned out pretty good :) edit: I thought I should add that my hair is very long (waist length before I cut) and I didn't lose much, if any, length besides the few inches I hacked off myself. It really works how she describes in the video!

Julie Vanderschaegen: I've been doing a similar ponytail cut but not flattening and cutting it at an angle- I think this is precisely the tip I needed! I can't wait to try this. Thanks for sharing your method.

artsy fartsy stuff: this is hands DOWN! thee best one cut method ever!!!!!!!!! and because of your kindness and sharing I honestly culd nt be any happier with my hair and this will be my forever go to method, I mean one frikkan cut and done, literally 3 min cut :) the angled cut technique blows me away!! I wanted the exact cut this hack prodeces and again couldn't be happier!!! wish I could hug you right now :)

Kristen Hammon: Thank you SO much for this!!! My hair desperately needed a trim and I came across your video. So easy and my hair is so happy now!

Evonne Kyriazes: This is perfect. I’ve never cut my own hair before. (just my bangs). I’ve been wanting this EXACT haircut for years but could never explain it to a stylist right. Now I can do it MYSELF?! This was so easy - because you explained it so well. I’m beyond thankful and thrilled. ❤️

Teacher Erika Jane: Thank you! I just cut my hair and it looks way better than I expected it would!! A little tip for everyone else, cut at less of an angle if you part your hair to the side. If you don't, when you do the part, your layering will look more sever on one side.

Juju Bees: I am a broke, disabled widow and I am going to save so much money doing this myself from now on. I did this! Even with arthritis in my shoulders!

Confidential Confidential: Hi Liz! Just wanted to say I've used your method twice now and both times my hair came out STUNNING! Thank you for this video!

Danya Wehl: Best haircut I’ve ever had! Followed the instructions to the T. I only had a fat rubber band off of the asparagus. Did it and was too long, so did it a second time, and it was amazing! Everyone that sees it sees it, including strangers, comments that my hair is beautiful! Thanks for the video :)

Kylie Teter: Thank you so much for this! It’s been almost seventh months since I’ve gone anywhere to get my haircut. It was waist length and killing me in the heat of the summer. I did this tonight, took about three inches off, and it came out amazing! I love it!

FarrahBeara: This actually worked quite well for me and was way easier than trying the other methods with multiple ponytails

Brisa Keizer: Thanks so much for this video! I have used your method three times now the past year and feel like I never need a hair dresser again! It’s so easy and looks great! My hair is a bit thicker than yours, some tips for others with thick hair: - When my hair is static I wet my hands just to get it all straight. - I can’t cut it in one go as it’s thick, so I cut it at the other end of my fingers. It all falls into the sink then, but at least I still have the hair in a firm hold when continuing the cut. - With the last step of cutting into the tail, I have to spread it out a bit, and do it bit by bit. - I cut off way more than you by the way, about 5 cm at a time, every two months. - Special hair scissors really help, I hide them so they are not used for anything else I absolutely love being able to do this myself! Thanks again!

uvagenie: THANK YOU!! My sister directed me here after successfully cutting my niece’s hair in quarantine, because that’s what big sisters are for. My tangled damage ends were driving me crazy.

mae4boo: This worked perfectly. I was too scared to go to the hair dresser after getting basically a mullet, so I tried this myself on my medium length hair. The result was beautiful. I did not lose a lot of length, and ended up with beautiful face framing layers. Thank you so much!!!

Debbie Kielczynski: I love this....my hair is a lot like yours and I am 65!! Back in the 70s my friend did this with shoulder length hair and it came out beautifully layered!! Yep....so it is an old trick. I never tried but I need a little bit of LAYERED look. Thanks!!! You did really great.

Eloisa Perez-Lozano: I’ve never cut my hair myself before and I was so nervous but I did this during the first week of lockdown and it turned so well!!!! Thank you for the easy-to-follow directions and video!!!

That Girl That's Me: I just tried this. My hair was about 5 or 6 inches from my waist and pretty thick. I did what she said to do and my hair looks great! I was afraid to cut too much so I only cut about 2 inches off. I really just needed the dead ends off. Dead ends are gone and it all looks even. That's what I wanted! I just saved a lot of money by doing it myself. Thank you so much, Liz Liz!

Shelisa Simmonds: I have been cutting my own hair most of my life (56 yoa now and still at it). Grew up with hairdresser aunts. Thank you so much for the fresh tips!

Marta Garcia: I cut my hair the way you showed me and OMG it came out beautifully done! The layers were perfect and I absolutely love it! I have seen other videos where they cut straight across and it doesn't look good, the way you angled the cut made all the difference! Thank you so much! Btw, I definitely subscribed!

Alyse B: Omg this is perfect, thank you! My husband and I cut my hair about a month into quarantine and it's so blunt and dry now. Usually I wouldn't try something like this myself but you've explained it so well it's foolproof!

KIM SANTOS: Omg I would be terrified to cut my own hair! I couldn't trust myself! But you did a great job! So skilled at it! Great tutorial Liz! Just subscribed to your channel! I have a channel as well if you want to check it out! Excited to watch more videos from you!

Kristine De Mesa: hey Liz! I cut my hair today using your method and i love it! thanks for the tutorial!

Sue Baldor: Thank you for this tutorial! I just tried it, and it worked like a charm. My hair feels so much better without the split ends! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Araceli Carlos: Second time cutting my own hair thanks to you Liz Liz! This is the best video to learn how to cut your own hair

Christina Sanderson: I've seen this described elsewhere, but this is much better explained - particularly the bit about getting the back strands on top, flattening the ponytail and angling the cut. Really needed to get rid of a few scruffy ends so tried it, worked great, thanks

LiFa Malik: I just did it. I'm loving the results Go for it because it is the easiest way to cut your own hair. Tried it on my very lengthy hair and it turned to be a pretty good haircut ❤

Wendy Travers: I can not believe how well this worked!! So simple and quick with great results!!!! I have medium-long length and the layers were perfect from front to back. Thank you!!!

Gail-My Repurposed Life: Oh my gosh! what a lifesaver for me. :) My hair was only just past my collar, but way longer than I wanted it to be. Quarantine-means DIY hair cut. Thank you!! This was just enough to save my sanity.

Br8j8: I love how this was a quick video that gave precise information and demonstration. I feel confident I can do it myself! Thank you!

Ella Purisman: Hi Elizabeth... Thank you so much for such an easy and wonderful tutorial. Just got this done, and it's perfect! Never going back to my hairdresser who managed to butcher my "V" cut for years!!!

Rose: I followed your video to cut my hair this morning! PERFECT HAIRCUT!! Thank you for posting! I like that you get right to the haircut w/out unnecessary chit chat! Many thanks! ❤

Hayden: This is the easiest and simplest DIY haircut tutorial i have encountered and i wasn't afraid to try it. It turned out really great for my hair. I'm so happy. Now I can just do it on my own without going to high priced salons. Good job

Loubee Lou: Absolutely amazing works so well. thank you so very much for sharing this amazing self cut method. My hair was such a mess, excessive split ends but now looks bloody awesome. Can't thank you enough

Joanna Krista Javelona: Thank you for this simple and easy to follow tutorial! Was able to cut my dry ends off easily thanks to this video

Trudy Stull: Been needing to trim my hair for ages. I used a similar technique a few years ago to trim my hair but had forgotten the details and wanted to double check before getting busy with the scissors lol. I trimmed off about 6" and my hair still falls to my mid back, but the layers look great and my ends are no longer stringy and sad! Thanks so much for sharing this video! I don't really like spending money at the salon anyway, and I'm not especially picky about the style, but I do like layers and this is a very easy way to achieve sufficiently uniform layers without having to pay someone else to do it.

Sophie Fontaine: I just need you to know, your version of this cut is the ONLY one I will follow because you actually have it turn out right:) especially because you explain the angle you need to use when cutting instead of saying to just hack at it. You are one of the ones who does it correctly!! I get amazing results everytime!!! I’ve seen a few others for curly hair and they usually turn out well too. If I see dry hair, straight cuts and people holding the ponytail down in front of their chin, I’m like nope! Thank you!!!! You are amazing!!

Lauren Nicole O'Donnell: Just did this & it looks beautiful. Thanks so much! I will use this technique from now on! <3

Pinky: Yay! Thanks, Elizabeth, my hair turned out perfectly. I am so happy! I didn't get around to the salon before the quarantine and now it looks just as good as if I did, and it took five minutes. Woohoo.

Kristi Campbell: I just watched this, went into the bathroom, sprayed my hair with water...abundantly. Followed her directions and I am stunned at how good the results are! My hair was just past my collarbone, has a bit of wave to it and it worked like a charm! I now have soft layers around my face and took off about two inches of to get rid of the scraggly ends. Thank you!!!!! 1

Lenore: Good stuff. I think this was maybe the first tutorial I ever watched when I started cutting my own hair... I remember the unicorn ponytail! :))) A few months ago, I’d had it w all my dead ends, so I used an different method to blunt-cut my thick, wavy hair. (prolly won’t ever do that again...), but now it’s finally grown out enough to do another unicorn cut for the layers & lightness. Thanks! I’ve also had great results w my (huge, thick, wavy) hair texture & w cutting on dry hair. Now that I’ve been diy hair trimming for a while, I don’t think I’ll ever cut my wet hair again bc of how the waves make it shrink so much when it dries. Ok, got my unicorn ponytail & my shears ready...deeeep breath...here we go!

Cheryl Alt: I saw a similar cut a few years ago and have been looking for a video with this front ponytail, one cut. You did a really good job explaining and demonstrating this technique and it works great. Thank you so much. Your hair looks great and now mine does too!

Jacqui Phillips: Omgggggg i absolutely love you!!! Just done it and seriously cannot believe how perfect its turned out, thankyou soooo much x

Micaela Ayala: The haircut looks amaizing in your hair, I need to try this :0 thanks 4 sharing :D

Leah Zanzucchi: Liz, Thankyou for your Unicorn Pony Tail Hair Trim Video. I have been using your video as a tutorial to give myself home-trims during the Covid-19 Pandemic. It is very helpful. I am proud of myself for the results, and it gave me confidence in a skill that for many years I did not believe I could do. Thanks.

Caitlyn Ta: and now this diy layered haircut is a trend on tik tok :)

ElfinRuler: Thank you for sharing this. I cut my hair this way all the time and really love the layers it adds to my hair:)

TheMsCherelle: You are adorable, and this is a great tutorial! This is the way I've been cutting my hair for a few years now, and it always works. Such a money saver!!

E S: I know this video is 3 years old but this was my first time seeing it. I have been cutting my own hair on and off for around 10 years. I have followed so many tutorials with such mediocre results lol. I am very impulsive so when I decide to cut my hair I have to do it then and there. I got the impulse tonight and found your video, I was like this is too easy... Something bad is going to come from this lol. 5 minutes cutting and 20 minutes of drying and styling later I look like I just left the salon!!!!! I usually spend hours trying to correct the mess I make trying to trim my own hair. Thank you so much! I have my go-to worry free at home cut forever now

becca faye: I'm trying this tomorrow! Pretty sure you just saved me $30!!!! Thank you SO MUCH for sharing this!!! I do something similar to cut my ends straight across but ive been wanting to learn a trick to doing my own layers! Im so excited right now!!! I'd go do it now if it wouldn't wake my son up!

Mariel H: Great video! Very precise and not over dramatized like a lot of "I cut my own hair" videos here on YT. I've done this method when my hair was longer, almost down to my butt and it's a nice effective way to get rid off dead ends and give more of a shape to long hair as long as you're super careful and use hair scissors. I'm super OCD and actually really liked how even it turned out which was surprising to me. Making sure it's as straight as possible and point cutting at the very end is key just like you mentioned in the video. I would not recommend this for medium length hair though.

Kimber Wilson: OMG!!! Thank you for this tutorial!! I was so scared!!! I've tried to cut bangs in the past with disastrous results. My hair came out beautifully because of you!!!

Laura A: Hey you did a really good job on explaining it and I love it. I’m definitely going to give this a try tomorrow. I have been cutting my own hair for 6 years now and I haven’t looked back. Every time I’ve had it professionally done they never listen to what I want and just do what they want. I can’t even remember if I’ve ever even liked a hair cut I’ve gotten from someone else before lol. Plus you can’t be free and you can do it WHENEVER. Any way thank you.

Brittinie Valdez: I loved this tutorial!! I can’t wait to try it today

Rae B: Just cut my hair for the first time in my life. I went really slow and made sure it was smooth. It turned out really good!

llangle1: This is the best video on cutting your own (long) hair that I've found! I've been cutting my own hair for almost two years via other YouTube videos and with my own experimentation. This video has yielded the best results for me! I have slightly wavy 2a hair that is below my shoulders by several inches. Thank you!

kendall and sandys art channel: I wanted to thank you for this video. I cut my hair by your method and it's way better than I could have hoped for. I love it more than any haircut I've had in years. I'll do this forever! Thanks!

Angelita Hsieh: This is a very practical, simple process explained very well and the instructor is adorable. I’m gonna try it

Holly Hauck: I've seen a lot of these types of videos, and this one by far has the best results! Looks amazing! I also cut my own hair, but I use the "creaclip" (put in quotations bc it's the 5 dollar one off amazon lol) I think I'll start using this method! Thanks for sharing ur tips!

Winifred: I just did it and I’m happy with the results! I just took off about 1 inch and it made a HUGE difference so you don’t have to go crazy and think you’re not taking off enough! Thanks

Lounge Around: This really works. In quarantine and needed a trim. Cut 2" off my hair and am happy again. Thanks for this video.

Alissa Harris: My long hair was falling out from stress and managing so much wavy hair was getting to be such a hassle. I went hard and took off 13 inches and aside from a couple choppy looking parts I loved it! Thanks so much

Lucile Hernandez Rodriguez: I've been cutting my own hair for 10+ years: I just used your technique and its one of the best and easiest I've tried! Thank you

Anouk Andriessen - Urban: You, my dear, are a lifesaver! After weeks of procrastinating I bought myself some hair scissors and tried your technique. Wow! I am so pleased with the result!! Thank you so much for making this video!

Ana Shannon: Thank you so much for this! I am so in love with how my hair looks!

Itscourtneyybabe: Expected this to be a fail but you were spot in with bring the hair forward and using angles! Good job girl!

Mandy Westover: I just did this tonight and I'm THRILLED! I followed the instructions just as she says to and it turned out great! I cut off about 2 inches (wanting to cut off 4 inches), but now I feel confident to take off the other 2in. Oh my God thank you!!!

María Eugenia Brodi: Just did it and lovely outcome! Thank you Liz :)

Wendy Macqueen: That was wonderful!!! I'm 68 and have long hair and wanted to layer it for something different. Gone give this a try! You go girl! <3 <3 <3

Riley Mellor: your hair turned out really good, it looks so pretty and healthy

Alison Wills: Tried this method as it seemed pretty simple to get rid of the lockdown split ends. It worked really well, as my hair was quite long and hadn’t been cut for ages I took a fair bit off and it looks much better. Thank you!

Elizabeth Dailey: This was perfect. I just did this and cut 9 inches off. Looks great! My hair ended up being about hip length afterwards. I thought I was cutting much more but I'll know for next time.

O Daughter of Zion Ministries: I did this on my very long hair and it’s amazing! I wanted it shorter and a deep v. All the hairdressers in the past did not do a proper v cut. Some refused saying it will look like a rats tail. Well i cut 5 inches off! I started with a very small amount to get used to it and kinda messed it up. But i did more small amounts checking each time and i got better at it until i got it perfect and then just went for it and chopped away. Now i have medium length hair and a perfect v cut! My bangs look amazing they are chin length and look incredible especially after curling and styling the hair. I will always do my own hair now i love this! Thank you ❤️

laura veronika: Beautiful i love it. Just what I need during quarantine. I like that you just cut a tiny bit at the ends so you cant go wrong. Thanks a lot!!!!

Karen Ngo: I just did last night and I love the result ‍♀️ Now, I’m confident to cut my own hair. Thanks!

Claudia Lopez: Thank you soo much!! Just did this yesterday and my hair turned out great! Will def do again in the future!

Carrie H: I've been doing a similar method for years....because the hairstylists never do what I want.... It looks great!!

Lois Groat: Best tutorial I have seen on this method. Thank you for showing the back of your hair! No one ever does that. Your hair looked great!

sisleal: Great video! Very helpful! Its much simpler and faster than the old method I was using. I love being able to do these things myself at home.

Judy Russell: Just did this today, it turned out pretty good!! I barely went to hair salons before, might never go back now lol - thanks for the video!

Cady: watching during quarantine! i'm gonna try a tiny bit later and see how it works. i have super long hair and haven't gotten it cut since december, so i'm gonna take the plunge haha. love your makeup by the way you're so pretty! <3

Megan Garrett: I just did this. Took 5 minutes is super simple easy to follow and looks good didn't cut super short but it feels much better. Very subtle but perfect for quarantine to hold me over until I can get a more stylized cut

Dixie H: Great tutorial! Clear instructions and explanations of why to cut it on angle for the front layers.

Wilma Du Toit: I am going to try this tomorrow!!Your hair looks great.Quick question Liz, what hair shampoo products to you use on your hair? Your hair is so beautifully taken care of!

Liv Birka: Wow , I just tried this and my hair came out so frickin good!!! Thank you!

S G: Thank you! This was very easy to follow and my hair turned out great

Martina Moroney: im 35 this yr 2nd of july and last time i went hair dressers i was 15 i used to sit on my hair but decid3d for a very shirt cut long fringe and shaved at back then i lost my hair thru tricolitamania which is a hair pulling disorder i had to go bald at 20 so since thrn to now ive not been to get my hair cut and ive only ever trimmed it ever so slightly so u can imagine the state of it atm! ive been scared to get it done properly in case i have to lose my haur again even tho i no i pulled it out (hard to explain) anyway i just want to say you have given me the confidence to cut my hair and i can see how much im taking away and this is the look I've been wanting for soo long! so im gasssed right about now aha! thnku sweet for sharing this and will edit later soon to let yas now how it went! really excited feel 15 again aha!

Journey of Souls - Kimberly Quezada: This turned out so good and the best part is, I still have my length! Thank you so much.

Nabil Lillard: Just tried this technique! it works! I was a bit confused with the part where you say keep your fingers parallel to your head but I kept rewinding and watching you (scared to death) but I got through it and I’m so happy!! I hate getting my long hair cut because all stylists want me to chop off so much of it! Never again!! ❤️ TY!!

Kalysta Gutierrez: Ok you are ABSOLUTELY adorable! Your hair looks beyond amazing and this is the only helpful, as well as the only success touturial I have come across. Thank you so much for sharing!!! ❤❤❤

ilovesyababe: Hi Liz - I followed your video step-by-step and it worked like a charm! I did it with dry hair and it worked amazingly.... thanks for demonstrating ..

Gillian Leverette: Oh my gosh, thankyou so much for this tutorial!! This has saved me so much money and time! My first time cutting my hair at home, and so glad I followed this tutorial!!

Karla Pescina: Ok so i have NEVER cut my hair before. With this Quarantine, 2 months standing I said.. let’s do it!!! Watched carefully.. had three margaritas, took a deep breath and followed along to this tutorial. ..... OMMGGG it came out PERFECT!!!! I’m not going to lie, after the third snip snap i thought i was going to undo my hair and find a catastrophe. But once i brushed it, wow. And once I blow dried it WOW!!! Thank you so much!!! Literally saved me $50 going forward lol

Bren B.: Thank you for this video! I cut my own hair for the first time today and I am very happy with the results. My hair is very thick, my rhino ponytail was as thick as my wrist so I held my forehead blade with two hands while my husband trimmed a straight line which I then feathered myself. Tip: use a lot of conditioner!

The White Horse: I remember way back in the 80's where we used to cut our hair the same way. There are a lot of these videos are coming out now, it's good to see!

Katja David: Thank you, my Dear for the video !!! It worked out great ... unfortunately I didn't have any hairdressing scissors and therefore had to use quite large but sharp poultry scissors .... works wonderfully ‍♀️ must say that I had to remove a lot more hair so the larger tool was just right for my thick hair ☝
