Ever wonder: Why is my hair stuck at one length? or Why won't my hair grow past a certain length? or Why does my hair stop at a certain length? or Why won't my hair grow past my shoulders? or Why won't my hair grow anymore? A lot of people think their hair doesn't grow past a certain length or think their hair seems to have stopped growing or is growing so slow all of a sudden. This video actually explains why your hair is staying at a certain length.

There are a lot of tips out there for how to grow hair long but no one really explains why hair stays at a certain length, so I decided to make this video and show black women how to grow hair long! The best way to improve something is to first understand it.

The Science of Black Hair by Audrey Davis-Sivasothy

Hey guys, it's shown and welcome back to my channel, so you guys probably clicked on this video, because your hair is stuck at a certain length. It happens to. I feel, like almost all of us at some point in our lives. It definitely happened to me where my hair just didn't, wouldn't want to grow past shoulder length. I have been able to grow my hair longer. This is my natural hair right now, but I know that isn't that it's a big problem, not a lot of people, face up. That'S what we're gon na be talking about in this video today. This video is part of a larger series where I'm taking some work. That'S been done in the cosmetic science world and showing it to you guys and showing how it can be used to explain to the things that we're noticing about our hair, so basically you're staying at a certain length is actually all down to a science. Specifically probability. The probability of your hair being able to reach a certain length is not that your hair just stops growing once it gets to that link, your hair is still growing. So let me explain first, it's important to note that hair on your head on average grows for four to seven years before it stops growing and later sheds off and shedding is a different thing from breakage shedding is directly from your scalp. So if your hair is growing on average for four to seven years, let's take five years. For example, on average hair grows for half an inch a month, five years times, half an inch a month would be thirty inches, which means, if you never had any drastic hair cuts. Your hair would be down to your butt before it sheds off. So why isn't this happening? I know the immediate response might be well it's because my growth phase is super. Super short. I am just cursed, it's because of my genetics, and while this may be the case, I feel like a lot of us are sometimes using that as an excuse for why our hair isn't growing when it is things that are under our control that we are causing For ourselves, because these averages are among black women as well, and so the reason why, for a lot of us, are here, isn't able to reach its longest potential, that 30 inches worth of growth, where it should be down to your butt is because of breakage. Let'S use an example of an ideal hair strand on your head, which has been able to survive five years and has never experienced breakage. These tips of this ideal, hair strand, would have had to survive five years worth of manipulation, comb being and every type of stress. We put on our hair. Similarly, if you move further up, this section of the hair would have had to survive for years, moving up three years moving up two years until you get to the portion of that hair strand, which has only been out for one gear. So the reason why a lot of us are experiencing plateaus in our hair growth is because our hair straps are never able to become like this ideal hair strand, because at a particular time period say three years we are always experiencing breakage and now I'm sure you're Wondering well: okay! Well, why is this breakage even happening and how come it's always at the exact same spot, allowing you to explain so a particular hair strand could grow girl grow past the one-year mark then past the two-year mark and then maybe get to the three year mark and Any time a section of hair has been on the head for three or more years somewhere within that section, always breaks off, and the cycle continues where it once a section of this example. Hair strand has been out for three years somewhere within that section. Always breaks and breakage couldn't happen anywhere, but a hair strand is only as strong as its weakest link and this section. These tips of the hair that have been on the head for three years would have the highest probability of breaking and if the probability for breakage at the three-year mark is so high that it breaks almost every time, this person would never be able to grow their Hair past how long it can get in three years, because it will always break out the three year mark and the person experiences a growth Plateau. The number of years it takes before a section of hair has such a high probability of breakage that it brings like every time once it reaches a certain point, is dependent on what you are doing to the hair over the number of years that it is on Your head in last week's video in this series I explained how breakage isn't necessarily something that happens once, but it's the build-up of small small, even gentle things that you're doing to your hair. That over time add up and result in breakage in the end, and I showed you guys a simplified model of a graph from the cosmetic science world that models hair breakage, where each point on this line is a condition under which a tested, hair strand was able To break so, for example, when I tested hair strand was pulled very hard, it only took a full a few times of pulling it this hard before it broke, whereas when it was pulled not so hard, it had to be pulled a lot of times at this Course before it could break, I used all of this to explain protective styling last week. It also has a direct correlation to the number of years. A section of your hair is able to survive on your head before it breaks. So if you haven't watched that video, I would highly recommend that you watch that. But basically, all this is saying is that, even if we only do gentle things to our hair, if we do those things enough times, eventually our hair will break and the number of opportunities we have to do these things to our hair increases as the number of Years increases - and this ultimately dictates the number of years it takes before a section of hair - has such a high probability of breakage that it breaks off every time after a certain number of years, for example, if you're not very good to your hair over a number Of years, you only have so many times so many years before your hair will eventually break off so it'll. Take, for example, two years before you always see breakage versus. If you were better to your hair in my head taken four years and this a lot of factors going to breakage such as like how damaged here here is and all of that, but this explains the gist of why it takes a certain number of years before You always see breakage at the same exact spot and why you are experiencing a growth Plateau, okay, so now that we've gotten all of the science out of the way now you're, probably okay, now that I know this, what can I actually do to keep my hair From staying at that plateau and growing longer, so I explaining why the plateau happens. So, in order for that plateau to be shifted so say, if you're here it snuck out shoulder length in order for it to grow anywhere longer, you have to do something different in your routine. You have to do something that will change your hair's probability. That will change how much it retains length within a certain number of years. So for me my plateau was around brah strongly. I say I have washed off points for so so long and it wasn't until I did something drastically different to my routine, which was doing more protective styles that I was able to grow my hair longer. Once I started learning that my protective styles was getting my hair longer, I still saw that my hair was kind of staying at the same length. Then I did something different again. What I did was, I started being more intentional and careful about how I was taking care of my hair outside of those protective styles. So, like literally my siblings, my mom will think I'm crazy for the amount of time I spend on my hair, because I'm willing to spend like hours to carefully take down my hair and literally baby my hair. I have also a full video on every single thing that I do to my hair. That'S more in-depth to reiterate some of the tips that I gave out in that video that have really helps me protective styling, making sure that I'm protective styles were actually protective style. Not getting my hair braided too tight for any product, I knew I'd only do anything special. I do a lot of protective styles, so doing those things and keep me up with them, because that's another thing, like your whole probability, isn't gon na change. If you just do these things once and on it'll, take like months of consistently doing something different than what you were doing before, that completely changes, how your hair retains length and how it responds to this probability and how your probability increases for me specifically, I have Noticed that my hair has actually reached another growth plateau so like these plateaus are real like even if you're here it keeps on growing, is gon na. Take multiple changes to your routine. So I said before my hair was stuck here. I did more protective styling and grew him. I baby my hair like crazy. It grew here I did all of this stuff. Now my hair is staying, and so I'm not complaining because my hair is long, but it's staying at this length. I would say that it's been at this link for, like 5 months, like it's been here for a while, and I feel like there at this point, I'm kind of out of ideas for things to do to my hair differently to help it grow right now, because I'M doing the same basic things to my hair that I've been doing for like a year. My hair has reached another plant. Another thing that may have been maybe affecting this is that I've been doing more protective styling, which means I haven't been leaning. My protective styles in for longer I mean apply a little bit more manipulation to my hair whenever I take down and put a new one in like every two weeks which I have been doing lately. But I don't know at this point I'm kind of happy with the length of my hair and I'm just enjoying my hair. For me. That'S something that I'm okay with, but it takes being able to acknowledge that if I'm not gon na make the conscious effort to consistently do something that I know will make my hair get longer. So for me, that could be doing. I'M gon na have to stop for two to three months rather than these two week, ones that I'm doing or - and at this point like. I also can't think of anything else to do differently for my hair. But the point is, I would have to do something more and something different to get my hair past this Plateau and I can't think of anything right now, but for you, if your hair is stuck at this plateau, there's definitely a lot that you can be doing And you can go back to the tips that have referred to briefly in this video and specific, not of the video. I explain everything that I do to my hair to see how you can shift that plateau a little bit further down and then consistently. That'S the key word is being consistent about it change something else to your routine and then they'll notice that you'll talk to your Plateau will go further down and further down and further down. So it's gon na it's not gon na happen overnight or like in a week, maybe not even in a month. You have to do something consistently different and keep adding. Oh just watch this video try it for a week and then move on if it works. For you definitely let me know and definitely stay tuned for the next video in the series. I will talk more about why certain people's hair is different from other people. So if you're like well, I'm doing the same exact things as you film, but my hair is still shorter. Like I've been consistent about all of this and yada yada yada, there are certain things that make some people's hair just not reach longer lengths as other people, and that's something that I will explain in full detail in my next video in this series. So thank you. So much for watching again and I'll see you the next one.

Seun Okimi: I just uploaded a video about the real role of race and genetics in hair growth! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4Dnwij0WOQ&t=5s

Sarah James: I hate when people automatically assume that a Black woman with long hair is wearing a weave.

Alexis H.: Same happened to me , I was moisturizing and sealing once a week I then switched to 3-4 times a week and saw a big difference in length retention

Alice9NoBara: I’m natural (4c) with waist length hair and the secret to growing long hair for me was simply keeping my ends moisturized and TWISTED. It prevented tangles and single strand knots and allowed my hair to grow super long. No special products or complicated hair routine need.

Tori Uptown: water, oil and braids is the secret!

Christina P: I wore box braids for 2 years. I got them re done every two months. I deep treated my hair and washed and conditioned my hair with my braids. Braids are great I’m telling you!!

fake Apple Store: 1. Never Dry Detangle Your Hair

Emilee Jerrell: When she said hair grows 1/2 an inch a month I cackled because mine grows 1/2 an inch a year :/

Anita’s beauty Corner: I’m Nigerian too and people are always shocked by my hair length and thickness lol when they ask how I got it long and I start telling them all the work that goes into it they quickly lose interest ‍♀️ hey can’t get the length without the work.

Santosha Padfield: FINALLY someone explained the hair growth cycle and I understand it!!!! Thank you!

S: Genetics help speed of growth, but not retention. Anyone that shaves their head bald today will have stubble in 3-4 days, so people need to stop thinking their hair doesn't grow. If your vagina can grow a beard so can your head dammit

A A Q: For most of my life, my plateau was 3 - 4 inches (my hair is 4C). Currently, because I wear braided extensions, I have managed to grow it to 9 - 10 inches, down to my collar bone. I will wait a few years to see how much longer it will grow, then stop wearing braids and get a keratin treatment. Hopefully, I'll be able to retain the length!

Simply_JodiAnn: Yes, breakage is why we don’t see “growth”/length retention! I just made a video on this and how I was able to grow my hair to waist length. Great content!

RichhBarbie_: I found Seun and I’m currently binge watching her channel cause SHE GIVES THE TEA about black women being ABLE to grow long hair !!! She looks bomb and is authentic !!

Hcj: Ive been watching hair videos for 10+ YEARS. Every video just regurgitates the same information over and over and over. Your video has provided me with NEW information that I never knew so educational and informative!! This is the best video on hair Ive watched in years! Thank so you much

Randa Wise: Also, what could cause hair to break is split ends. I find that keeping them ends trimmed prevents lots of breakage. Split ends weakens hair, hence causing breakage. So when you pull your hair close to the end, it will break off.

ScottKS14: I too experienced the plateau at shoulder length. Keeping my hair up and off my shoulders is what got me past shoulder length. Halo braids and banana clips. Even roller sets where it didn’t touch my shoulder.

T M: I love when women help one another ❤ thank you. I'm in a hair phase now because I have a daughter so I want her hair healthy too

outherewildin' b: In effect, healthy hair practices! My family also side eyes the time I spend on my hair (but they like the length though ). Have you tried low manipulation styles, like buns, wash and sets and redoing more regularly? I find my fine hair likes being reset more often. I also changed up my products to include more conditioning and humectants (BTMS, MSM, fatty alcohols, aloe etc) higher on the list.

SonyaOutThere2020: I’m 39 years old, have hypothyroidism and I’ve given birth. I noticed my hair length is the same as it was a year ago and assumed my hair had just stopped growing until I saw this video. This means a lot to me.

Shanette Quao: It seems like I’ve been in this growth plateau for a while... shoulder length as well. It’s very annoying but I will overcome it

rachelmm05: Great tips for getting my hair to grow past my current length. For me I admit I'm not as consistent in my hair care routine. I'm definitely ready to get past this level. Thanks again

Rae Sweety: So basically, we all need to learn our hair and try something, be consistent, until stagnation, try something different, then repeat. We are all unique!! Thank you!!

The Love Revolution: I love how you broke this down. Everyone once in a while I Come back to this video. This was the vid that made me believe I could break my shoulder length plateau. Happy to say I finally made it to armpit length! Thank you so much!

Tracy Sweaty Nipps: This is a really good informative video I love this.. Another good tip for anyone no matter your texture or curl pattern is to pamper your scalp/ follicles so many people neglect keeping their scalps clean and will go months without cleansing their scalps and call it "tender headed" when its 90% of the time your scalp trying to tell you its not happy and its stressed and needs to be cleansed. We tend to normalize being " tender headed" but having a tender scalp is not a normal healthy sign and it will also hinder your hair growth and quality of the strands grown. A clean healthy scalp grows healthy strong hair. Listen to your body it speaks to us all the time but alot of times we disregard the signals.

Nikki Lizzie: iv been moisturizing my hair 2 times everyday with a mixture of water and leave in conditioner and spray it in my hair then seal it in with coconut oil, evoo and Jamaican black castor oil and iv seen a lot of new growth my hair used to be neck length for 2 years and in 2 months iv seen more growth than ever now its at armpit length! :)

O: Girl, I saw this video and I had to subscribe! I have NEVER had anyone explain the science behind my hair issues. I will be following everything you say to a T. Keep up the amazing work! Also, for your next plateau, have you considered the no-comb finger-only manipulation method? I heard it works amazing for natural hair.

Lovely Kay: This was so informative I was able to truly grow my hair when I stopped using relaxers went natural I do occasional blow outs but mainly rock my hair curly and once a week hair mask...I’m trying to get my hair to my hips but it won’t grow past the middle of my back now I understand why I’m going to try extra TLC after a trim and see what happens thanks love ❤️

ab bie: You guys are lucky to have plateau at bra or hip length my hair has stayed at neck length for the past 3 years

ukdiva28: In my opinion, successful hair growth starts w/patience & understanding your hair & it's needs. I have extremely thick, dense, frizzy hair. Using the following tips, my hair did a 180. Give them a try: 1. I never do my hair in a bad mood. 2. Protective style 100%. 3. ALWAYS use a leave in before I apply moisturiser & sealant. 4. NEVER detangle dry hair. I use a cheap conditioner (Queen Helene, Suave, any thick conditioner) all over my twists or WnG. Let it penetrate into my hair, THEN detangle. 5. I Only comb my hair in the water using a wide tooth comb. I then f/u w/a denman brush in the shower. That loosens all of my shed hair & massages my scalp. ALWAYS starting at my ends. If I feel like restyling my hair before washing my hair, I spritz hair w/avj, to soften the hair, then slowly comb thru hair, apply l/I, moisturiser, sealant, style. 6. Seal my ends w/castor oil or Dax....you read correctly, DAX! 7. When I wear twists, I greenhouse every other night. My hair grows like a weed w/this method. 8. Msm (I take capsules) extends the life cycle of hair strands. Google it.

Patrice On Purpose: Grew mine waist length by doing the least. Wash, deep condition via steam once a month and keep hair in 10 to 12 twists pulled into a pony . Set it and forget it

Abby: I cannot get over how amazing, informative, and scientifically correct this video is. You are so beautiful and so smart. I thank you so much for really getting down to the details to help us understand hair growth! You are so amazing!

Billionaire Jordan: You are right! I remembered my hair was at a certain length and for the life of me it wont grow. But then i had on a full wig for months (which wasnt intentional, just couldn't afford to do my hair at that time) and when I finally got it straighten I was super shock!! My hair finally grew!! And now I BELIIEEVVVEE in protective hairstyles!!

Tatyana Edgeworth: I definitely need to film a hair growth routine now. It took me a while to pass my shoulders but now it’s super long!

LadyJM: Im more focused on volume. I want my hair to be BIG like a round ball lol so length isnt a concern of mine but I understand why Black women want long hair. For length retention, my motto is "Set it and Leave it!" Ive been doing crochet faux locs for 2 to 3 months consistently for a year and now my hair grows like wildfire. I can barely keep my hair braided w/o at least an inch of new growth after a month! Never happened to me before! Healing my damage with protective styling has really helped. Black women, we dont have to do alot to make our hair grow. We just need to listen to hair and learn what it likes. Put your hair away for longer periods of time and youre good!

Stella Bella: K.I.S.S.- keep it simple stupid. Heard this in like elementary school and applied it to my whole life. ♥️ - Moisturize DAILY!! (Even under wig) -Dampen and finger detangle ONLY except on wash day -Chunky simple braids every night for a simple braid out style the next day for naturalistas -wash/deep condition about once a month with wide tooth or medium tooth comb (be patient, drink wine and play music if needed ) -any oil besides coconut oil -rice water whenever you can remember to save edges

Danaé Lauren Tolbert: A healthy diet, drinking plenty of water, and EXTREME TLC aka moisturizing. I am natural at the moment. I do not straighten my hair. When I was relaxed, I did extreme TLC and it grew to hip length. I could be very long now (shrinkage) and seldom do wash-n-gos. I haven't straightened my hair in a while.

Michelle Kalski: I guess this is why people with dreadlocks grow so well. It's a protective style with no breakage since the hair is locked in on itself.

Sapphire Hair Care: Learning a lot from these types of videos! :-) basically it's just taking care of your hair getting to know your hair not doing what everyone else is doing to their hair for your hair. I've learned that and I've noticed the change in my hair strands and the length of my hair as well. Thank you ever so kindly you have such beautiful hair God bless you

Octavia Armstrong: This video came on recommended page and I'm so impressed with how you broke down this information. Thank you. I'm currently on my healthy natural hair journey and I appreciate this video

KloutKulture: Trimming the ends helps. I used to trim like every 6 months but I haven't trimmed in over a year now. Your hair is beautiful. Nothing more beautiful than an Afro-American woman with long natural hair.

Y2KDiamond: I used to relax my hair a lot as a child even got my hair thinned out once bc it was too thick for maintenance but I took care of it a lot more as I grew into a teen and now as a young adult. My hair was at my ears after all that relaxing and burning but after a few years of just braid outs and protective styles it grew up to my shoulders. I had a dream my natural hair grew butt length so now I’m on yt looking for tips on how to get past that plateau you spoke of in another video haha bc Im trying to get there ! Your videos are very helpful and educational especially Thank You !

madame360: Thank you for this series, what helped me get from shoulder plateau was finger detangling and vegetables glycerin mixed with water spray to hydrate my hair instead of just water. I'm 4C

lovelyrosebw: My hair grew the most when I was constantly putting it in crochet braids, I loved crochet braids, I loved the way it looked I could keep it up for two months,, quickly style it and it was a protective where I didn’t have to mess with or manipulate my hair a lot, and my hair not only grew but thickened but then I made the mistake of not doing my usual routine of taking it down, detangling, washing, conditioning, deep conditioning, light trim, braid it and put the crochet hair right back and kept it moisturized while it was in and that worked for me but then I didn’t do that once and decided to put a hair dye on top of dirty hair I hadn’t washed yet after taking out the crochet hair after i detangled it and that the biggest and dumbest mistake I ever made, my hair broke off fail out whatever you wanna call it and really never recovered from that and I was so angry at myself, it grew back but not like how long the crochet braids had grew my hair which was quite long, the longest I ever seen it and what made it worse I had an allergic reaction to the dye that broke my skin out in a painful red rash, let’s just say after that I never dyed my hair again and I didn’t put the crochet back in after that and wasn’t able to really retain length, now my hair wasn’t short, like medium length but I wanted it to grow my hair long as long as possible just to see how long I could grow it but just wasn’t getting the results I wanted no matter what I did so I kinda gave up on growing long hair cause it’s frustrating not to mention the amount of money you spend on trying to try products you think will work to help it grow and at this point I’m so frustrated with my hair I just want to buzz cut it all off and start over to see what kind of results I get cause hair is pretty damaged from heat to I feel this is my only option to see where I can go from here

YaYa's World: Great video, I am stuck 5" from my goal "tailbone" length and this video has given me some ideas of how to get it there. Like you for years my hair was at armpit, this is awesome, thanks again✌

Alyjah Flakes: Thank you for this video. I’ve been stuck between waist and hip length (stretched) for a few years and I’m finally making an effort to work harder to improve my probability. Back to short term protective styles like French braids and sleeping in my bonnet.

JEDIAH: 7:29 "You have to do something different in your routine." My plateau was shoulder length, and my strands are very thin so my hair breaks easily. My solution: I wore micro twists for one year. Wearing micro twists brought all of my tiny strands together making 1 "strong strand" that could withstand styling & manipulation. Result: I retained 6inches in one year, but 5 after a trim. Ladies if you have the patience try it, and feel free to ask me how I did it without locking up #greatvideo

T M: Also my daughter loves seeing her mom natural just like her. I really think it means more than we realize so I'm trying because fake hair was my best friend while working & going to school at the same time

Glorified Person: this girls is speaking straight up facts i cut my hair some time in march an dit seriously did not grow because i wasn't really doin anything to it but now that i started oiling and protective styling my hair that ish is growing sooo fast like seriously its only been a month i went from armpit length to down my back and i haven't even straightened my hair yet to actually see its length

Amber Sumerall: I think if you just keep your hands out of your hair, wash and condition it, deep condition and apply leave in and tie your hair in a scarf and go. Don’t do anything to your hair for a whole year, it will grow.

Amy MH Chan: I just started my hair growth journey but I have been watching a lot of videos. Ones that promote scalp stimulation by massaging homemade oil combos every night or every couple of days a week depending on the recipes. Keeping the scalp happy promotes good roots because it isn't too clogged with dirt and hair products. Of course shampooing as per normal. Also trimming the dead ends off every 2 months but recently I heard for afros every 4 months. I like to trim every 2 months bcoz it makes it easier to comb my hair through.

The Mitchells: Locs have helped me to retain length — your strands are protected and retained when forming locs. I’m 9 years in and my locs are at my butt even after trimming 6 inches last year. chemical damage, a lack of moisture, and physical damage can slow growth but I haven’t plateaued yet. This is fascinating and helps me to understand my hair more. Great job and thanks so much for sharing

Mary Sophy: When I was in High School my hair had the same length.... for years!!! While I was always doing cornrows on my head for school. But when I got to University, I started wearing weaves more often. That’s when my hair grew past my shoulders! I never understood why it had happened! I just had very long hair! And after watching your videos, now I understand. That’s because when I was in school, I used to stay with my cornrows for only a week. The whole year. when I got to Uni I was finally able to wear weaves and I kept them for 1,5 to 2 months... I think that’s why I saw major hair growth. But as I didn’t understand that, I stopped wearing weaves... and I went natural... the big chop✂️...

My Locs: I thought terminal length was 2-6 years. You’re lucky to have a longer growth period but the majority of us have a shorter time for growth. So even with protective styling, etc. The hair will plateau and there’s nothing wrong with that! It’s unfortunate that people get on social media telling us that we too can achieve the same growth potential when it’s just not true! 12-18 inches of hair is good if it’s healthy and we should be satisfied and happy!

Million Heiress: This video is ...GOLD! And I JUST put my hair in a braids lol. Thank you, Seun! You are THEEE best!

Bambam Love: Moisture helps a lot for me. Summer weather is good because I sweat. Yeap. Sweat...it grows

Kenya Sims: This would be a good video for the ones who want long hair or it matters to them to have long hair. I even wore short hair styles in high school. Would do the dye burgundy when the sun hit it you could see it. I would chop it off in a minute. I think all kinds of styles are cute I love the natural twist roll sets real cute short or long.

N. Emm.: I began transitioning in 2016. I have 3B curls and used to flat iron it weekly. My hair never grew as long as it did until I cut my flat ironing down to twice every six months. Now I take biotin, eat healthy, drink 64oz of water a day, use a satin pillowcase and the only time I touch it is during my midweek detangle, then my washday. I used to touch my hair SO much too. Now I put it up and don’t worry about it and it went from being at my bra strap to past my ribcage.

Public Figure Chyna: My hair stops right before the place on my back where I strap my bra! The longest it’s ever been. Braids wigs no heat washing every 2-3 months was my trick

Sharon: this is one of the only genuinely helpful hair growth videos i’ve ever seen. really well explained and useful!

Benita Farore: I honestly wish I started watching your videos before I did the big chop and got rid of my shoulder length, relaxed hair. It's unbelievable, how much I didn't know about how to look after my hair, thanx for all the advice.

CurlyGirlLife: Gorgeous smile and hair <3 And i totally agree on protective styles for growth...i have been putting in mini braids a month at a time and am now past bra strap length, love it lol

Roby: I have been almost 8 years natural and my hair is barely past me shoulders. It has grown, just not at the rate I want it to be. This helps, thanks!

Ayomikun: Your hair is so BEAUTIFUL !!

Ebizzill: i had a bald spot recently most likely caused by tension from my tight turban head wrap knots (y'all! this is a thing! make sure you dont put as much pressure on your turban knots directly on your scalp ). I did what I could to make sure it was massaged and taken care of (from past experience, i learned to not obsess about it, and let it do its thing as long as I do my part in nursing it back), I noticed how my growth rate was SUPER slow. Aproximately 1/12 " growth a month if I was lucky. I paid attention on this from mid September to basically now.. 1/1/20. I do have to say I wasn't working out consistently, my eating habits were not tragic, but I could have done 20% better to be deemed... half healthy. I wonder if this is what plateau is...

Valerie: Thank you, the first time I went natural, it took me 11 years to past my collar bone, then I cut it and I have been natural for 5 years, for two years I was stuck between collar bone and arm pit length. Since I have been massaging, spraying my hair and rice water, that has made a huge different, my sides are nearly armpit length, the back and middle is past armpit length. Now I am moisturising and oiling my scalp at least twice daily. I can see the vast improvements.

CHris Brandon: This is very true, just think about how extremely long black peoples hair grows when we have locs. Theres little manipulation... so less breakage and more length. European hair is naturally oily and more flexable, our hair is naturally dry and more brittle so if we keep our hands out of it, it will be able to grow more bc of there will be less breakage. Makes perfect sense, I've been saying this for years.

JamilaK: My plateau is always waist length, I gave up and cut off 4 inches, it's retaining it's length and is "growing fast " now. Washing/conditioning every other day works for me with protective styles

MeInternally: This is the best explanation of the hair phases- I would always be confused and now I get it

Alicia xo: Thank you so much for actually going in depth with it, I'm 16 and my hairs never grown past shoulder length and i have tried so many its soooo annoying I have tried soo many hair growth products over the past few years but nothing has worked but then again I've only had one professional haircut in my life so im gonna try getting trims regularly and trying to incorporate more moisture and see if it will make a difference! Thankyouu

aliciabrillante: I love all the charts. The breakage our hair experiences from any and every way we treat it is beyond frustrating.

Or Selena Didi: My hair is long too. I decided to leave it in two strands twists for a few months (I'm 2 months in) to cut down on those hard core detangling sessions that took my hair away everytime. I wash, condition and treat over my twists. I don't mind looking a like rasta woman. I occasionally gel my hairline to look sleek when necessary. I needed a break from detangling and getting stressed by those lengthy washdays. I will take the twists down in 2 months maybe. I'm really enjoying my peace of mind at the moment. It's magical !

Sarah Grace: Once the hair reaches waist length, it usually takes 6 to 8 months to reach hip length, from what I read and that also depends on your height which can shorten or lengthen the time it takes to reach the next mileston. And that's just normal, it's not a growth "plateau". Every stage of growth for the hair has a "plateau" before it's able to reach the next milestone (and this is assuming one is taking great care of their hair, healthy hair with low manipulation styles).Yet it's not really a plateau, it's still growing. For example, from chin length to armpit length... this could take anywhere from 5 or 8 months for some. If one is taking the best care of their hair & has a sustainable hair-care routine, then it may just be that their hair grows at a slower rate than the next person.... So it just depends.

KALI REALITY TV: My hair simply grows by doing nothing to it . Keep it in a bun.. move the bun around..move the puff around...wear braids mostly cornrows leave your edges out and your hair will grow quicker than you think‍♂️

Dee West: Thanks for this video. I’ve been stuck at a hair plateau of shoulder length natural hair for many years now. I just put it down to genetics. I’ll give your tips a try as I am not particularly too kind or attentive to my hair most times.

Ilovesesshomaru sama: It’s rare that I learn anything new from a hair video but this was very informative so thank you. I rap my hair in silk everyday all day for a week before I need to wash and manipulate my hair, and I’m stuck at mid back length. Im thinking about pushing protective styling to two weeks at a time to three weeks maybe even wash once a month.

Tiana Vaughn: I suggest anyone who gets stuck at Plateaus to try chebe along with a wig you can take off at night. Chebe retains your length while keeping it moisturized, grew my hair out hella

sharj: This is a great video thank u . It’s a different angle from what I’m use to regarding growth and retention..... I’ve always known it’s me holding my hair back but I’ve never heard someone explain it like this

Pamela Susette: I feel so upset with my hair. I am a 56 year old white female, who from the time I was little, had thin fine hair. I am lucky if I get my hair shoulder length. It doesn't matter if it is 2 years or longer, it is barely to my shoulders. I have after two years cut it short leaving it short for a while and then letting it grow and the same thing happen every two years. After two years barely pass my shoulders.

DrPhylCunningham: I agree that the less pulling and manipulating we do to our hair in its natural state, the longer it grows. My son’s hair is in dreads, is past his shoulders, and is still growing.

ShaelaToni: I grew my hair from big chop to butt length in 6 yrs...recently cut it to midback length bc it got tangled and hooked on branches, nails, picture frame corners, etc. And because my hair is strong, it wouldn't break the strand. Nope. It would yank it right out my scalp. I didn't wear weaves, wigs nor extensions during the whole period. Just twists and buns.

Blabeauty25: Great explanation. I measure my hair and I grow 1/2 inch month or more. I read that hair mask is a must every month. I do a deep conditioner because I have low porosity hair.

Mojisola Wadsworth: Thank you for taking the time to put this information together and for sharing it. ️

Linda Sylvie: This is science and true, I had the same problem during my childhood and ended up believing that my hair could never grow over my neck. In 2015 I went natural but nothing changed until 2018 when I decided to really really take care of my hair andddd booom almost bra length in 10 months . These thinks are really,Thank you so much # consistency is the

MiMiB__ _: My plateau right now is about a 1/2 below bra strap length. Prior to that it was slightly below shoulder length. That was the worst and marley twists and lack of heat for 3 years got me past that. Now twists arent cutting it and actually causing some breakage. So I'm gonna try more intensifying moisture and sealing and decreasing manipulation even more so.

Ms Dee: This video reminds me of my probability and statistics class...amazing job! Great information about growing my hair even longer!

Glow With D: Thanks for the tips. I’m going natural and at the same times looking for growth and the struggle is real lol

K C Francis: That explains the growth in rice water, reinforcing the strength of the strands. I also discovered a few years ago that synthetic hair pulls moisture from my own therefore drying my own hair and breaking it. I do a lot of twists but I've make sure I use a brand that is curly kinky and does not dry my own hair.

antinoye: oh damn.... i’m on year 3 of my natural hair journey and i’m shoulder length and a little under on my back. I’ll have to make sure to pay more attention to it on this time.

Fine Natural Hair ROCKS: Another great video! I can see exactly what I’ve been doing wrong. Thank you for posting this!

ʻIkuā: I didn't realize there was a growth plateau! I'm part Chinese and some of my family (my cousin, my aunt and my grandma's sister) have all grown their hair out to their butt or to their knees (which, we're short, but they're still 5'~5'2" tall). Our hair grows fast and while we have straight hair, it's still thicker than lots of other straight hair types (sometimes when we're cutting our hair, hairs get stuck under our fingernails and it really hurts like needles!) In China we even have a "village of rapunzels", the Yao women of Huangluo. They all have hair grown out to 5 feet, and they add cutoff hair and shedded hair too to make their hair impossibly long

Lakeisha: this video just called me a bald headed heaux

Cholise Jones: Try to get box braids, but with your own hair (no weave) and leave it in for a month or two (you can still easily wash it lol) . You’ll hair will grow, and you can see the growth as your braids grow out. And it’s harder for your hair to break off , because the lack of manipulation

Ichigo _.: I feel like moisture protein balance is very important because lots of ppl overlook that and wonder why their hair is dry, brittle, and excessively sheds

Ariel: The secret is iron, zinc, folic acid and as weird as it sounds, massage your feet every night people, it brings the blood flow back to your head very important, people think vitamins and biotin fixes everything and though that helps you should really take care of your body on the inside. As boring as it sounds that’s the key to healthy hair growth, healthy skin etc

yeldahsheladonai: This is the best "why your hair won't grow" video I have EVER seen. Thank you! It made so much sense.

Zakiya Nafisa: It was the heat for me and always wearing weave. My hair would break off it was dry and the ends were damaged however my hair was still long. I did a big chop last year and my hair came past my ears. It’s been almost a year in November and my hair is back past my shoulders where it was when I cut it. I’m loving the results however I’m still getting use to how much it takes to do my hair. I have 4c Type hair very tight curls. Long as I hydrate it and keep shampooing once a twice a month it’s doing great !

Day E.: Watching this video reminded me why I hate science and I switched majors in college. This was a great informative video but science is so boring to me lol. She still got a like and subscribe for taking the time out to explain

Aleks505: I just love these videos, your hair is so beautiful. I dont know if it is because im a black female and the info is pertinent to my hair but i binge watch these hair care videos, not only for tips on how to improve retention but it is just nice to see other black women on my tv screen. Im not seeing too much of us anywhere in major movies & tv shows cast as the leading lady, unless its an all POC production. Thank goodness for YouTube.

ash2kewl: This is spot on. It’s not that black hair don’t grow. It’s about retaining length. The biological make up of our hair is weak. If there was a product that strengthens our hair beyond breakage, would be great.
