Hey loves: what's up vestroia till today's video is all about my hair, um texturizing it and the mistakes that I made along the way. I think this is really important to talk about, because we all make mistakes um and we all can learn from them, and I like to help you guys for those of you who are new to my channel. I texturize my hair. Almost a year ago, a June 12th 2015. I am at the moment eleven months post. I use the just for me texturizer on my hair. The first mistake I would say I made is that I didn't strand test. I did it. First of all, on blown out hair and those of you who are familiar with products that texturize or relax, it doesn't really know your hair texture. It'S going to start with the base of what you give it and if you flat iron, your hair or you blow dry, your hair, it starts with that blow-dried hair or that flat iron hair and then moves from there. So my advice, if you want a highly textured hair, which is what I was originally going for - don't flat iron or blow dry, your hair, my original reasoning behind doing that was because I have very, very coarse, um sort of it like very tightly wound. Curly. 4C. Hair and it's really difficult for me to get through it um years of relaxing my hair before I went natural the first time. Um taught me that you need to move really quickly, because you want that chemical to texturize or relaxed to your hair evenly all over and with my hair being coyly. I knew that I couldn't do it in its natural state. So what I should have done - or you know what I wish I would have done - is just did a twist out just do a twist out just do a twist out so that your hair is loose enough, but don't flat iron or blow-dry it beforehand or you're. Going to end up with basically straight hair. The second mistake that I want to say is that I didn't do enough research on the product. I was using just for me texturizer or texture softeners, what they call it, and there are so many other options. One of the things that I noticed after a while is that my hair kept getting drier and drier and drier, and I'm not talking about the natural hair dryness I'm talking about like it was just like dry to the roots, to the core of it. Um and no matter what I did like you know, applying a more moisture or sealing with oils. The the moisture wouldn't stay in my hair, the same way that it did when I was natural. So, keeping that moisture means a little bit more upkeep and I would say that you just want to research the different options that you have the particular texturizer just for me based off of the reviews. Other people have had that complaint as well. I'M not saying that will happen to you, I'm not saying it's a horrible product or anything, but if I had to do it over again, I would probably choose a different product based off of that alone. Third mistake I made is that I didn't apply it evenly. Um, those of you who have seen my hair now insert a clip now my hair turned out straighter in the front more textured in the back and then overall kind of straighter on this side than this side. Now I did section my hair in four sections. I only left it on for seven minutes, but again I did on blow-dry hair, so hence the results that I got um and I was a lot more heavier handed on the left side than I was on the right side at the time. I didn't think that it would make a difference. I thought chemicals, chemicals, chemical, whatever it's it's just gon na you know texturize it it's more about the time than the application, but it turns out the application does matter. Also, if you want to highly you know, textured look when you're done, um, don't smooth it. I didn't have to smooth it. I didn't smooth it. I knew not to smooth it based off of other people's advice, but it was already blown out so yeah apply it evenly all over, and the fourth mistake that I made is that I ended up flat ironing my hair, I still pressing it. So those of you who are familiar with my channel have seen this video, my mother, she came and she still pressed my hair and it was looking fierce and fabulous she's, so good at doing hair uh. But I think when I forget how long I was into my texturizer journey or whatever maybe like a few months and I was still recovering from the texture loss. So I was using algae products and it really brought back a lot of the texture. And I was so happy with the way that it was progressing, but when I did that flat iron and it was like a serious flat iron - I mean it was gone with the wind, a fabulous flat iron and plus, I did add, a semi-permanent color on it. But I did lose texture and it started to look more a lot closer to a relaxer than a texturizer. Because of that - and I also I mean I didn't - follow it up with more like effigy - I did. I think I did the Apple G treatment two-step treatment once after that, and then I was like you know, I'm getting too much new growth, the protein treatment. I mean you really at least for me. I really wanted to avoid my roots because just doesn't need anymore. Texture, it's already pretty strong, so the process was just getting a little bit too complicated and I was like you know what I'm just gon na deal with the texture loss, but I wouldn't have flat iron, my hair, so soon after, especially since I was trying to Get a lot of texture back uh yeah, so I wanted to make this video because, like I said in the beginning, we all make mistakes and I want to help you guys, um and and I'm not afraid to talk about the mistakes that I made. If I you know what, if I were to do it all over again, would I have texturized my hair yeah? I still would have. I know myself um it's like having that itch that you just got a scratch because you're curious, I'm a curious person. I would have still done it um, but I I think I definitely in hindsight would have followed the new advice that I have in order to get the results that I really wanted. So learn from me um. But I'm really really excited about the progress that my natural hair is making the biggest kind of lesson. I'Ve learned throughout all of this is that there are no easy fixes, even if you have locks which a lot of people have been recommending once you just get locks, you have to maintain those. If you get a relaxer, you have to maintain it. If you get a texturizer, you have to maintain it, and you also have to make sure that the way you texturize it the first time is the way that you do it from then on out, because you're going to have different textures on different, like lines of Demarcation, if you're, not if you're not experienced or if you're, not careful, so I would probably say, go to a professional, especially if you're doing it for the first time just go to a professional and see what they do and learn from, at least for the first Time and if you have straight hair, you always want volume and you have to wash it a lot more often I mean everyone has their difficulties. There is no easy way. The easiest way for me so far has been to braid my hair and pop a wig on, but then again you still have to braid your hair. You still have to deal with detangling, so more of the story is if there is no easy way. I don't know what else to say: um I mean I guess I could say more of the stories like accept what you have, but if your person that's into style change is just inevitable and that's the spice of life for me. So I'm always going to be changing it up. I love it, so I just have to deal with the fact that it's not going to be easy. Probably ever so, I hope you guys enjoyed this video. I love you guys. I hope it helped and I'll talk to you later. Yeah

Valerie Wilson: silk elements from Sally's is the only texturizer that's perfect. leaves so much texture and of course leave hair not straight and do one side for 8 minutes total and wash out then other side same thing. perfect results!!! can't texturize entire head at one time. make sure to put some type of grease..lol..on the texturized hair when you do touch ups to avoid over processing. ;) good luck

Yinka E: There truly is no easy way. Everything requires maintenance. That is something I've learned along my journey as well.

Keneisha Williams: I like your outlook at the end. Change is inevitable. Sometimes I change my hair believing it’s going to be “my look” only to want to change it I’m 3-4 months. I’ve been natural, did the chop, grew it out, texturized, had a braid phase, wig phase, you name it. My 4c hair is a challenge, my texturizes hair is a challenge...I’m just going with what I feel at this point. Right now I’m texturized again (for the second time in my adult life) as of April.

Lise Agnant: Girl I smoothed my hair too, huge mistake indeed But I am loving my texturized hair, I have 4c hair like you and it just makes my life easier. I have 4 kids ,so I wash, air dry, use the straightening brush , bun everyday and I am good for 2 weeks

Kia Cohn: In my personal experience the ISO Maintamer texturizer is the bomb ive used it for 3 yrs now n I texturize once a year in the summertime when the humidity is at its worst this product has allowed my hair to grow and it helps my low porosity hair to retain moisture ive had positive outcomes onmy hair journey and I wish the best for all you ladies out there on your hair journey

R Vlogger: I too have 4c hair, and I find that this hair type thrives either fully straight or fully natural, the in between that a texturizer offers, leads to breakage. Another lesson I learned is that because the hair is so tightly coiled, it takes way too much heat to straighten it, n that amount of heat kills the strand with every pass... It's been a minute but I think I've finally mastered my natural hair... Great video, stay blessed ma!

Patricia Dodd: Thank you so much for this video, been watching a lot of videos on texturizing hair yours included because I have really been thinking about it. I got the kit 360 blow out by Lustre, did a strand test and still sitting on it. lol like you said there's no easy way out. Dealing with my coily always tangled hair especially at the roots is very challenging and terrorizing in general but at the same time I love my hair. Still thinking of going ahead with texturizing it or still staying in this super coily tangly struggle. lol. Thanks again. Really helpful!!!

Tomekia Slade: Hi lady!! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you for your videos. I'm 2 years into being natural and my daughter is 3 years in. I'm definitely 4c and I DC and do protein treatments between my protective styles. My daughter has a really relaxed pattern (thanks to her dad's Gene's).... on the other hand my son has A LOT of hair(4c : thanks to me) and chooses to only taper his sides. Ohhhh it's a struggle!! After watching your videos I think we will incorporate more protein treatments and DC after every wash!!!!! Thanks for being so informative! I was all set to texturize his hair this weekend!!!! I'm going to try try different regimens before we go to the texturizer!!

Emdottie: That stretched out tip is great. I was afraid my hair would end up straight looking at other girls' vids and pics. Going to get a test patch done by my stylist today. My hair is in a wash and go currently. Thanks so much.

Jenn Jackson: This video is so helpful! I used the same hair "softener" and basically made most of the mistakes you made lol. What other products would you have used? We live and we learn! x

Deidré Kok: I have 4a,b,c mixed hair type and used a soft 'n free scurl texturiser. The mistake I made was under processing my mid-ends. I do suggest sectioning stretched hair into five parts, two in the front and back and one on the top centre. Do not start at the front of your hair, it will go straight if you are slow in applying. Start where the hair is the most curly, for me it is the top of my head. Apply your coconut oil to your end! and keep within the 7-8min time frame. My curls are still very prominent, but I no longer have the shrinkage issue.

cassiemichelle03: With the 'there is no easy way' that is the TRUTH honestly. I'm texlaxed and it's still difficult maintaining, it just has different difficulties versus natural hair. It's so frustrating because when I realized that there is no easy way with our afro hair I just got really frustrated..still am quite frustrated. I think natural hair is BEAUTIFUL but I don't want to go back to it because I just don't have the time to maintain it. But also with working with chemicals I never put it so it touches my scalp because I'm scared it will effect how my hair grows and so I start off a fresh texlax with some new growth and then the two textures collide and i get occasional mats and it's just..all overwhelming.

ARMYprinncess: Awesome video so glad you made it! I'm planning to texturize my hair this weekend so I will use these steps

Sometimes it snows in April: This is why I love you and your channel. You are always honest and open. I appreciate that and that's why I watch every video and support you 100%. Thank you and keep the vids coming!

Chichi Okorie: Oh lord I nearly texturised my hair last month ‍♀️. 4c hair is making me give up.

Blkbeautee: I texturized my 4c hair a yr ago. Well, now I have cut my hair down to the natural growth. I suggest strand test every 3-4 inches because my texture is different all over just like you Jouley  Less than 5 min on my head and now its as if I did a big chop. Never will I texturize again.

Jazzydancelove: Thanks for this! I just went out and got that aphogee 2 step reconstructor. I'm about 9 weeks post texturizing (just for me) and my hair is SO FREAKIN DRY . I I have to try something else.

booktoblockbuster: Everyone I've talked to says texturing works for awhile then they big chop. I'm in the process of doing my research and the more I research the more I think it's better to relax bone straight or stay natural- no texlax. I've heard good things about the ORS relaxer and the Phytospecific. Thoughts or Any recommendations anyone? Thanks

Tanesha Williams: I just texturized my 4c hair yesterday with soft and beautiful no lye texturizer.. I did it on dirty hair tht i took down from a faux loc style i had in for like 2 months so it was already stretched and defined. I worked each section startin with the most coarse and smoothed and detangled until the buzzer went off. I kept it in for 15 mins total and baaaby i love the results my hair is still in its same state just easier to detangle, its elongated and the curls gurl the curls jus poppin all over the place! I say try a no lye texturizer as they tend to be milder than the kiddie kits

NaturalBeauty321: LOVED your openness and the candid talk. You rock, Toya!

David Perry: I'm not planning to texturize my hair lol but I still learned a lot from your video!

canary pruitt: I've texturizing my hair almost a year ago and I recently did it again and my hair turned out straight I wanted to cry because I've been natural for 3 years but I'm ready to start my journey over anyways.

ArtingWithMakambe: Oh my God, honestly, thank you for this video! So much good information and tips!

vanityfair001: @La Toya Codner, your explanation was very thorough and extremely helpful. Thank you.

Ashalayy2213: I use just for me but I love my results ❤️

Trinna's Ultra Beauty & Braids: Sorry to have had that experience. As a stylist we make sure we let clients know doing a consultation what to expect. All texturizer will dry hair out over time it doesn't add moisture. That's why it has moisturizer you have to purchase separately.. It's imperative that you keep it treated... Oil, reconstructor and conditioning. You should only use wide tooth comb and not use it like a relaxer. Texturizers should only be in no more than 5-15 minutes at the longest and never smooth it out unless you're actually are going straight. You should see the s pattern.

Sometimes it snows in April: My hair mistake was using a tiny curling iron while transitioning. I wore a wash n go but because I was transitioning some pieces were still straight and needed to be cut off. Your girl here could not let go of the length/damage so I used the tiny curling iron to make the straight bits blend better. Ugh. Eventually I got a Deva cut and I'm all good now. Ya live and ya learn, right?!

Lilmisskandi: Texturised girl here! No regrets. 4c very coily hair is NO JOKE. Edit: it is still very much behaving like supernatural hair & I still care for it as such. It’s growing better too

Aisha -: It worked best for me when it was in its natural state, bc it just signed my texture. AND YES WORK QUICK! one side of my hair is a bit looser in the back on one side than on the other

Wendy Boney: Never go to a so called "Professional"! Do it yourself! They will perm you! Just take your time and don't leave it in long.

Shaquin Broughton: Thank you so so much for this info. Extremely helpful for me.

Tamaria Lakayye: Thanks for the tips lady I’ve been debating on getting a texturizer on my hair

oyitslindsey C: I just now found this. I wish I watched this yesterday when I Texturizerd it. I used the same kit and my hair is so dry and stringy in the front

KoalaBear: Thanks. I’m dealing with breakage due to overlapping. Wish I would’ve done my research beforehand

RochSolid: Thx. I'm seriously thinking of texturizing. My hair is so thick and time consuming. Glad I watched because I was going to blow my hair out. Your hair is gorgeous. Thxs again.

Ebizzill: i forgot to wash my hair for a month... took me 8 months to recover from that... then AFTER I started seeing progress from that.. .I experienced some MAJOR tangles, and instead of finger detangling...... I raked my comb through it and lost 16 percent in the process. It's been 6 months since I've been doing finger detangling and it's been helping me tremendously. I've only used a comb to comb out my ends for trimming, but when it comes down to it, now adays I'm even parting with my hands to get styles.

The Photo Booth Chick: You are right! I am tired of braids, wigs, weaves, and my natural hair. I love my natural hair and all the protective styles. BUT at the end of the day, we have work to do. Nothing lasts forever. I am thinking of putting in the texturizer and seeing what happens. Second, if I don't like it, I will cut my hair and start over with short pixie texturized styles and then let it grow out (back to the natural state). Thank you for sharing!

Dolce B: Very helpful, thanks Latoya

PanaRican Princess: I’m Afro latina with a slightly looser curl 3c/4a and my trick for defined curls is I do a mask first with bentonite clay to get my curls to pop then I rinse it off and dab it dry but only a little because I want it to be slightly damp then immediately after I put some oils on my scalp and edges and then I apply the texturized. My curls stay moisturize and don’t feel stripped or after and the curl stays coiled but loose. ☺️ works for me anyway ❤️

Plight of the Black Woman: Perhaps if they came out with texturizers that are made for different hair types that would help. But most of the women I see on YTube that have used the texturizers regretted it. So I am debating whether I will try it or not.

LaToya Ebony: Have you made any hair mistakes? Share them with us and how you fixed it (if you did)!

Angela Adamson-Lowe: I'm definitely blow drying n smoothing mine!

Kay W: I totally screwed up just for me knocked all my curls out! I have to chop! Sadly, I watched this too late.

Caroline Jones: Thanks for the video my hair is just like yours . I don't know what to do . I put on a wig quick. But it still takes hrs to do also.

Patsy Lanso: Hi. I am a new subbie. I would like a little advice. My mom has very fine 4c hair . What texturizer would you recommend that I try for her? Also...do u have a vid on products that work best in texturized hair. Thanks soooo much

Dorothy Baskin: I don’t want straight hair just want to be able to comb without screaming. I am going to put it in real fast and wash it out.

Starroze aka Kawaiicutiebaby: i love your hair!!! and i did enjoy this video i needed to hear this information because i was thinking of doing keratin treatment.. so i am going to do more research and find a professional that specialize in keratin treatment on natural hair

Shakita Thompson: Hi... I used a texture softner on my daughter's hair and have made a complete mess. Her hair is chronically DRY and DAMAGED. The scalp is dry and flaky. The hair closest to the root is extremely course and hard to the touch. The rest of the hair shaft ( what's left of it) is severely broken off, damaged and week. There is so much hair coming out in the comb. Does anyone have any ideas? Please! Im desperate!

digthewarmth: Texturizers seem like they never really work long-term. Just use it once to have loose curls, then basically cut your hair off lol. It seems like a nightmare to prevent demarcation lines, and the curls never turn out how people want. Should people just texturize while wearing little flexi rods? and you just use the same rods every time?

Edwana 365: Thanks for the advice

Rednia Buvado: i have natural hair but i get tempted to texurize it because the shrinkage is reallllll

Patricia Starchia: Awesome video.., Well said And because of your advice I will go to a professional

Angie Bee: I’m experiencing the same dryness I don’t know what to do with it

Denise Lee: Very true, there's no easy way.

Udo!: What is the best texturizer in your opinion? Gorgeous hair!

Vanessa Benjamin: Thank you! Great information!

Mell Goldson: Section all your hair first so you don’t have to section while applying the product

indria drayton: Thank you. No creamy crack lite for me!!!!

Follow Your Heart Journey: i think texturizer work best on short hair.

I want my fries crispy not burnt: Girl do that shlt no more! Your hair crying! DO PUT PROTEIN TREATMENT IN TEXTURIZERS if you are going to do that, go to a professional. Do that ANYMORE

Issa Rae's Body Double: I smoothed my girl in the front because I wanted my edges to be soft smh

anna geoge: i tex my hair for 2 years now on my way back to natural .. hard work tex hair some months came out straight and stringy...i miss the volume.of natural hair, ..its looking good already!

999hotchocolate: after the silk straighten routine did you get any curls back at all or was it like straighten hair

LXRDXN: shouldve used aloe vera plants to make your damaged hair turn back curly

ThatgirlDiva N: If you relaxed your hair and you are transitioning can you texturize your hair?

Courtnee Gerald: you sound like Essence Atkins

GoodLife: Thanks for sharing!!

April Ebk: Why does she look and sound a little like Tia and Tamera?

Erika Scott: The only thing missing from this video is storm clouds and the sounds of Doom.... I watch this video to hopefully get inspired and now I'm tempted to get my money back... #NappyLivesMatter

Nigerian Pussy-Stretcher: How about taking a shower a couple hours before texturizing, so the hair is softer and makes even application in a timely manner easier.? I too have 4c hair and its impossible to get a comb or pick through my dry hair

Cheryl Jackson: Just for me is the worst. I used it to texturize my daughter hair it ruined it. I texturized her before and it was beautiful but the product I used was no longer on the market. But will never ever use just for me again.

Jessica Brooks: If you textlax your hair once will you have to keep doing it ?

Isabelle Betancourt: I did this too ☹️

Manii: Did you have to cut your hair off? I went natural for 2 years I got a weave and permed my leave out and been putting a lot of heat toy hair I really don't want to cut it but I know it won't grow healthy

Symone Robertson: Why is she Essense Atkins!! Lol you're gorgeous !!

Renee Robinson: you remind me of the mowry sisters i love your videos!

Ali: thanks for sharing!

Bren: what relaxer or texturizer are you using now...

riapariome: you really remind me of tia mowry- from how you look to the way you talk! its so weird! i loved this video btw!

The Lady Boss Empress: I got to smooth the product out or else it won't take.

D. Nichole: Oh lord. Why would you texturize your hair just to straighten it?! ‍♀️

LA STELLA 🌟: Thanks for all the tips.Latoya you look and sound like Essence Atkins.

Hogan Misses: You favor the girl from Smart Guy. I don't know her name but she was the older sister, or maybe it's your voice and mannerisms that are very similar.
