Hey guys welcome back to my channel or welcome if you're new, for those of you who don't know me, my name is Sam, I'm a licensed cosmetologist and in today's video I'm gon na share with you how to cut a blunt cut. It doesn't really necessarily matter on the length whether you want to go shoulder length like my hair collarbone, like a lob length or really short chin length bob. It'S all the same. It just kind of depends on how high you cut the hair up, but the technique and the actual haircut itself is all one. In the same now, when you are doing a haircut like this, you can't be pulling the hair all to the front. You have to cut it from the back, so it is really difficult to do on yourself. So if you are looking to do this haircut on yourself, I highly suggest you get somebody to help. You have them sit down and watch this tutorial with you and then have them. Do it on you instead of trying to do it yourself, even me as a professional, this is one of the most popular haircuts I get requested. I do it all the time and even still, I would not attempt to do it on myself and any hairstylist out there who are gon na hate on me for teaching people how to cut their hair at home. I respect your opinion, but I feel as though right now people are really desperate. Who knows when we're gon na be able to get back into the salon, so they're going to be doing their hair themselves at home, so I'd rather show them the correct way to do it then have them just completely botch it and try to figure it out On their own, so when you have the option of going to a professional, I always suggest doing that. But in times like this, when that's not an option, I'm gon na show you how you can do it the proper way at home. So what you're gon na need to do? This is some clips. Of course, any kind of clips will do, doesn't really matter you're going to need a comb and then you're going to need shears. I really really really highly suggest getting a pair of shears that are meant for cutting hair and not just using scissors that you have laying around your house like kitchen, shears or paper scissors. Hair cutting shears have a really sharp blade, so it's gon na be able to actually cut through the hair and create a nice clean cut without causing any damage to the hair or just like folding the hair. When you go to cut it, they don't need to be super expensive. You can get a pair from Amazon or at the drugstore Walmart Target in the description for some affordable, hair shears in case you don't already have some now the proper way to hold your shears. Just for reference, you want to hold them up like this, where the little tail is on the top. You want to stick your thumb through the bottom hole and then your ring finger through the top hole. Your pinky is going to rest on that little tail and then your middle and index finger are gon na rest on top of the shears and you're gon na open and close like this, I have my makeshift tripod here, because I don't have a proper mannequin stand. So bear with me so we're gon na start. This haircut off on wet hair hairs a lot easier to cut through when it's wet. However, keep in mind that once the hair dries, it is going to bounce up and fluff up a little bit. So, wherever you want the hair to fall, once it's dry cut a little bit lower than that if you're cutting on wet hair, so I'm gon na start by sectioning the hair off work off of whatever part you normally wear. If you always part your hair to the left, then work off of that left part if you like to flip it around and you wear different parts on different days - part it down the middle. So that way, no matter what it will be even on all sides, for the sake of the tutorial, I'm just gon na part down the middle. That'S where this mannequins natural part kind of goes anyway. So there we go middle part, then, from there I'm gon na go up to that part that we just created behind the ear over here. I'M gon na connect up from the middle part down to the ear or right behind the ear I should say like so so do the same thing on the other side now from here we're gon na start with the back section, so I'm gon na go across The back and a horizontal line, I'm gon na try to keep that line as straight and neat as possible, which is hard to do with this head bobbing around. So try to keep that part as clean and straight as possible. You want to make sure that every section that you are doing is relatively thin, like you should be able to see through that hair. So you see how you can see through it. You can see the back of her neck if the piece of hair is too thick. Not only is your cut, not gon na be clean, but it's gon na be a mess, and it's gon na be all over the place in order to ensure that everything is nice and blunt and that it's cut all at the exact same length, you need to Work with thin sections, so you can really see what you're doing now. This is really really important, especially if you want that really crisp clean blunt line in the back. You want to have the person tilt their head forward if they had their head tilted back and I cut this hair anytime. They move their head around. The line isn't going to be blunt and you're gon na see little pieces of hair sticking out. Underneath that doesn't look good, we want this, be nice and clean and sharp, depending on how long you want it to be where you want it to fall. Like I said you can make this haircut super super short or you can make it a little bit longer. It doesn't matter the length that's totally up to you. The whole point is just the bluntness, so I'm gon na come to I'm just gon na cut like that much off now. Obviously this is not a real person. She does not have a body, so I have to use my fingers, but let's first time doing this on a real person with the back, I would hold my comb in my non-dominant hand, comb down and hold the hair right there against their back and then, with My dominant hand, I would go right underneath that comb and I would just cut a clean straight across line. I have to use my fingers, though cuz she don't got it back and make sure that the line you're cutting is straight also make sure that the person whose hair you're cutting they are sitting straight, that they don't have their legs crossed or anything like that that Their body is not tilted or shifted any which way you want them to sit perfectly upright straight and then just tilt their neck straight down, because if they're leaning any which way, then when they go to sit upright, their haircut might be crooked. Once you're done. Cutting that first piece, you're gon na move on to the next section same thing: you're just gon na go across in a horizontal line, but you want to really make sure that this section of hair is nice and thin. So that way, you can really see through that hair. Again, you still want them to have their head tilted down. You'Re gon na comb that hair down - and you should be able to see through that section and be able to see that first section that you cut behind it. That'S how you know where you need to cut this next section so same thing: you're gon na! Take your comb in your left hand, comb it down, use their back as a flat surface and just cut right at that point where you can see your guide and then we're gon na just do the exact same thing, let down another thin section of hair. Do not rush through this and just guess where you're cutting make sure that your sections are nice and thin so that you can see through them, and you can still see your guide every time, you're cutting and as you're working along if the hair is starting to Get dry make sure that you wet it down again. Another thing I need to point out, too, is I'm sitting down behind the head, I'm not moving around as I'm working over by the ears, I'm not moving my body at all and coming down this way. I am staying exactly where I am in one position and I'm pulling all of the hair towards me as I'm cutting it. That'S how you're gon na ensure that it all stays the same length. If I'm moving my body around, then it might start to get a little bit shorter towards the face. Once you get like a third of the way up the head, then you can have the person bring their head up right. You really just need them to lean forward for all of the hair. Underneath now that I have the head upright. I'D still, obviously don't have a back to press up against, but I can brush the hair straight down and I don't have to use my fingers now. I can just use the comb to hold everything in place and again you can see my guide right there. So all of this is what I'm cutting. So I actually just did another tutorial where I showed you guys how to cut long layers and we'll put the link to that in the description. If you want to go check that out, so the top layer of this hair is not as long as this longest length, it doesn't reach, so I don't have anything else left to cut now, even if you have layers in your hair, you can still have a Blunt cut as long as all of your longest length is cut nice and blunt. So once we have the back cut to the length that we want we're gon na move on to the front, because the front of her hair is just naturally not as dense. We don't have as much hair as we do in the back. This tends to be finer, so sometimes you can just let that down and you can just cut it all at once. If the hair is thicker, then of course you want to go through and you want to do those same thin. Horizontal partings, like we did in the back exact same thing. This hair, especially the ends over here, it's so fine and wispy. So I can just cut that in one shot, so I'm gon na try to turn it a little bit so that you guys can see so I'm just gon na comb this down and you see where this hair in the back is cut all nice and short. I'M just gon na follow that same line right across the side. So I'm just gon na comb this down and then just the same exact thing on the other side and then check the front. Make sure that everything is all the same length which this is and there you go all one length super blunt cut, it's a pretty easy and straightforward cut to do, but you can very easily mess it up as well. So the main things like I said: clean, sectioning, cutting, really nice thin see-through pieces at a time, making sure that you can see your guide when you're cutting and having the person tilt their head down for all of that hair at the bottom in the back. So I hope that this video was helpful for you guys and you learned something. If you did please give it a thumbs up. I would appreciate it. It helps my channel a lot. I am going to try during this crazy quarantine time to get as much like DIY at home, hair content up as possible. So if you're interested in that kind of content make sure you subscribe to hit the bell notification, so you get notified every time I upload and hopefully I'll see you in my next video bye. You

BeautByKay _: I’m a licensed cosmetologist and I’m not at all offended by these videos. I think it’s great! Thank you for this!

Deydra Linares: My bf used this video to cut all my dead ombre off and my hair looks amazing! Thanks so much for taking the time to make this video! Now I can live out the rest of this quarantine with some dignity.

Sandy: I just wanted to come back and thank you for this tutorial. I made my mom watch it and cut my hair after. I had really bad dead ends and I love how my hair looks like now. You have the best tutorial on YouTube and it’s so easy to follow. You’re a great teacher ❤️

hialyssah: been looking for blunt hair cutting tutorials (to share with my sister lol) and yours will always be one of the most informative and most non-stylist/beginner friendly ones.

Maddie films: This was a better tutorial lesson than my actual cosmetology teacher <3

dgriite: Hey Sam! I just wanted to let you know that a friend of mine helped me cut my hair by following your exact tutorial step by step! I am very happy with the result:) We did one mistake and one alteration though: - The mistake: while following your tutorial closely, we somehow missed out on that I didn't need to keep my chin down after the lower half of my back section was cut. So the upper half of my back section is a liiittle longer than it needs to be, but that is something that can be remedied with another quick haircut session, I think. (And since I have quite wavy/curly hair, it's not a super obvious mistake.) - Alternation: Instead of cutting the two front/side sections in a straight perfectly horizontal line, I wanted my hair in a lob-style, so she cut the hair of the side/front parts diagonally instead of straight, which resulted in the hair being a bit longer in the front than in the back, which I wanted. We also checked that the transitions from back to front were seamless. So thank you very much for that video! Your explanations made me confident that we could pull this off without it looking too weird and choppy! I've been wanting to get rid of my ridiculously long heavy hair for a while. This was the perfect video. Thank you!:)

junimondify: You're a star for doing these videos. I do not think it takes away from stylists at all, because I see what the difficulties are and where the routine of doing it daily is needed, so I appreciate my stylist much more after this!

a lleiN: My sister cut my hair some days back and it turned out perfectly! We watched a few other vids but it was definitely this one that helped the most!! Thank you so much!! ❤️

Keri Hatgirl: This is a great tutorial. Very similar to the technique that my husband (not a licensed stylist) uses to cut my hair. He has me sit on the stool, he capes me and combs out my hair. He cuts my hair dry, but he has cut hair wet as well. He does the sectioning exactly like you did, except he pins up the hair on the sides rather than leave it down. He starts in the back and lets my thick hair down in 1/2” increments to trim the first layer and successive layer with my head tilted forward. He sits on a chair so that the area he is cutting is eye level for him. When he gets up to where my hair in back is at the same level as the sides, he will have me turn my head to the side, and he will trim the bottom section to match the back. He then checks the evenness holding both sides under my chin. It takes him about twenty minutes to trim my elbow length hair using this process. My best friend visited to watch him give me a haircut as she wanted to see his process, she was impressed, she complimented his work and then said, “I’m next!” She likes the job he does on her hair, so she has continued to have him trim her hair. She also likes that she is getting free haircuts. He invested in a good quality pair of Japanese steel hair shears, hair clips, wide tooth and sectioning combs as well as a nylon hair cape. I would not have let him near my hair the first time if he pulled out a pair of kitchen shears.

amandadaisies: Thank you for doing this! We definitely need little trims at least to get us by in this time!!

a: thank you so much for this omg <3 my mom was too scared to try to trim my hair until watching this and it turned out perfect!

Michaela H: Can you do a series like this? I’m in school now and I’m really struggling with the basics, I’d love to learn more from you!

Ian Gray: Sam, this is a killer video! My Bluegrass recording artist wife and backup singer to Dolly Parton (Claire Lynch) wants me to give her a blunt cut so she can do some upcoming Zoom appearances. I bought some decent sheers (within my price range) and will continue to review your video before assailing my wife's "do". I'm somewhat nervous, because Claire used to attend a top hairstylist to the Country music world when we still had a house in Nashville. I wonder, seeing as you are so capable and are such a great teacher (I'm a retired Special Education Specialist) whether you might have some videos that help both genders with haircuts for each other in this lockdown malaise ? Personally, I'm transitioning toward a Jack Nicholson look, as the result of balding, and would like tips on how to thin the fat growth over my ears to match the skinny growth now happening--or not happening-- on top. I have had pony tails in the past (full head of hair in the '60s and early '70s) but now, age 69, I want something more elegant and age-appropriate. Any tips ? And can I tip you with some of my wife's music ? (Claire appears in the most recent Dolly biopic on Netflix about 11 minutes from the end, in case you want to see who I'm bragging on). Again, thanks for your amazing video. I have shared it with other house-bound ladies here in Canada who can't get out to "get it done" elsewhere. Rock on, Ma'am !

Alyssa Ruiz: Your makeup always looks soooo good

Blair Overstreet: Thank you! My husband's about to cut mine!

L. G.: This is a great tutorial! Now if only I could convince my roommate to cut my hair!

La Luna: Thank you so so so much!♡ I've been putting off going to a salon (cus im anxious) and really need a haircut

Derinsu: Hey, thanks for the video! But what if we cut hair with the men's hair clippers (lol) and then fix the ends vertically with scissors?

Amanda Singer: Love this! Stuck in quarantine I’ve finally convinced my boyfriend to let me give him a skin fade - he said if I fuck it up he gets to try and cut mine so god willing he won’t need to watch this video, but it’s here if he needs it

Roca01: Nice... Please more vids like this ❤

Jess19877: Thank you for sharing these . I don’t plan on cutting my own hair but my husband does need a cut. By any chance will you be doing men’s cuts?

Marla: You might wanna do a tutorial on bangs too bc you know that’s what we’ll be doing next

Soleil: Your eye look is so pretty and simple! What eyeshadow did you use? ❤️

Cindy Ladner: This video was very helpful!!

Alex Mackay: God bless you for this girl

Deja Whitney: This was a really good tutorial

French Toast: So I took matter into my own hands and chopped my hair but I noticed the front parts are longer can I just cut them straight across one size or will that mess my hair up more than it already is ?

Maria Catalina Leiva: Very cool! I'm trying to grow my hair. I want to highlight it but I don't know how to do that :(... I can't wait to go to a hairstylist.

Frank Jackson: Thanks very informative about this cut

Legg's Garage: Yay! Best way to spend my evening. I love your scrunchie btw

dogsbody31: Thank you for this!

Ian Gray: SUCCESS ! Thanks again, Sam.

Nidia Catalan: If the person getting a haircut is standing up do they still have to have their head tilted forward? Tysm great video! ❤️

Joe List: Second time using this over lockdown, thanks again.

Fantômie: Using this for my wig!

D. A.: Just a week late Sam, a weeeek! Thank you though, now I’ll just re-cut it shorter

Fruity Gal: Thank you! I have a wig I want to cut. What lip color are you wearing?

Emily Zorzonello: I would love to learn how to tone/ glaze/ gloss my long blonde hair

Shes A Sunshine Msp: One side always ends up slanting on the side OMG ITS BEEN EVERYTIME

Joanna: Wow thank you for this video now I know how to cut a blunt haircut your the best gf❤❤❤

Kelly Morrill: How do you cut long hair when you get to the shoulders?

lucky3026 Lucky: Thank you so much for all of your help. But I have a question. The mannequin doesn’t have shoulders so how do we maneuver around shoulders to keep it all the same length?

Nila Edlin: Thank you so much, we will be in lockdown til end of November. It has been 3 months and still have 2 more to go.

nolly anggita Ineco: Thanks for the tutorial

Karolina: Now I want to cut my hair

Onj onb: Thank you!!!

alma: you look sooooo pretty here!

Sharon Boughton: Very good!

theGrayArea: If it’s a blunt triangle it’s okay to stand with each section, right?

Kitchen with Sana: Can you please tell me are you using camera for video or mobile phone ? And which software is good for video editing

Anna: Ohhh, thank you Sam ❤️

ashley moreno: I love this video!

The Werner Fam: YES!! i love this!!!!!!!! PREACHHHHH

S Lim: did i miss out how you cut the back bottom hair?

lilgothbaby00: So I really wanna go to cosmetology school but my head is crooked and I have limited mobility with it so my head is kind of look lopsided. I’m worried this will make it harder for me to make straight lines with things such as hair and nails. Do you think this is something that could be worked through? I really don’t want to give up on my dream, but I’m worried I won’t be able to do it to the best ability.

Zap Love: Is it true that the first piece you cut is cut more to get a blunt cut? I got a blunt cut and days later I noticed longer pieces. Which I had to go to another Lady to fix it but she said it had to be shorter.

Joe: Can you maybe do an A cut tutorial?

jaber hassan: for a0 degree classic hair cut.the head of customer must stay straight. You don’t make costomer bend there head infront, or not all hair will be cut in 0 degree. for that it’s one of hardest hair.cuts,

ColourBrights:

Grazielle Gomes: Great job!!!! You look like Kylie Jenner
