Hey guys welcome back to my channel or welcome if you're new, for those of you who don't know me my name's sam, i am a licensed cosmetologist and in today's video i'm going to share with you how to cut long layers and i'm going to try to Break it down and keep it as simple as possible, so whether you are somebody who's currently in beauty, school, looking to work on your cutting skills or if you are not a professional and you've, never cut hair before in your entire life. Hopefully, you will learn something from this video before we jump into the tutorial. I just want to remind you guys if you would like to support my channel. Just please give this video a thumbs up. It really helps out my channel a lot with youtube's algorithm. It helps them push this video out so that new viewers can find my channel and it'll help me grow. So what you're gon na need to do? This is some clips. Of course, any kind of clips we'll do doesn't really matter you're going to need a comb and then you're going to need shears. I really really really highly suggest getting a pair of sheers that are meant for cutting hair and not just using scissors that you have laying around your house like kitchen, shears or paper scissors. Hair cutting shears have a really sharp blade. So it's going to be able to actually cut through the hair and create a nice clean cut without causing any damage to the hair or just like folding the hair. When you go to cut it, they don't need to be super expensive. You can get a pair from amazon or at the drugstore walmart target i'll, put a link in the description for some affordable, hair shears in case you don't already have some now the proper way to hold your shears just for reference. You want to hold them up like this, where the little tail is on the top. You want to stick your thumb through the bottom hole and then your ring finger through the top hole. Your pinky is going to rest on that little tail and then your middle and index finger are gon na rest on top of the shears and you're gon na open and close like this. So i have my mannequin head on this makeshift tripod situation. Hopefully, this will work so whenever i'm cutting layers, i like to do it on dry hair, because i feel like i can just see where the hair is going to fall a little bit better. It gives you a better idea of what the final look is going to be i'm going to start by sectioning her hair first before you do anything any kind of haircut color. Anything like that. You want to make sure you have nice clean sectioning so, depending on wherever you normally part your hair, you want to do it there for the sake of the tutorial, i'm just going to part it down the middle, but if you always part it over to one Side part it there so once we have the hair parted, i'm going to come over right behind the ear from that part up top, i'm gon na bring my comb down and i'm gon na split it up like that. This way we keep the front sections separate from the back i'm going to do the same thing on the other side, just like that. So now we just have this back section that we're going to be working with you'll notice that the way hair naturally grows. Our hairline goes in like a diagonal back kind of shape, so our hairline comes down further in the back of our head, so it's thicker and denser back here and then we have less hair up in the front. So that's why we want to make sure that we're keeping it separate, because we don't want to be cutting everything all the same. Otherwise, we'll end up cutting too much hair from the front section. Now, there's a million different ways that you can cut layers and a few different ways that you can specifically cut long layers. I'M just going to show you what i think is the easiest way. So when i'm doing this on a client, i just get right in there and i just start cutting my layers, but for the sake of this tutorial, to keep it a little bit more like beginner friendly, i'm going to have you go through and section away, the Hair, where you don't want any layers, typically, when we're adding layers to the hair, we're just layering the top section and then all underneath we're going to just keep it all one length. So that way, the hair still looks full if we cut layers all the way throughout even down into this bottom section. Our longest layer would be so thin and so stringy, and we don't want that. We want the hair to look full and healthy, but we just want to add some movement and some body up in the top, and i'm going to take this bottom section and i am going to tie it away so that way we don't accidentally cut into this Bottom piece, because we want to keep this long and as full as possible, so just make a little ponytail or a little bun. That way, you don't have to worry about any accidents and then take that top layer back down, and this is all that we're going to be cutting in the back. So when you're cutting layers you're going to work off of beach ball sections, which basically means you're going to work off of the top highest point of the head and you're going to come down in like pie slices, basically so starting at the very top of the Head i'm going to come down and i'm going to make a sort of thin pie section. So this is what it looks like and now in order to create layers and make them look, nice and seamless and so that they all blend and flow. And then it's not looking like really steppy and choppy. You need to elevate the hair. The higher your elevation is aka, the higher up. You hold the hair, the shorter your layers are going to be. So if you barely want your layers to be that dramatic, then you can hold them out to about here. If you want them to be a little bit more dramatic, you can hold them out up to here. You can even bring them like all the way forward. Like this, if you want to so, what i suggest doing is just determining where you want to make your first cut by holding it up at a certain angle and then pulling the hair down to see where that shortest layer is going to fall on your head And i always suggest cutting the hair longer and cutting off less first and then, if you need to cut more cut more because if you cut off too much the first time, there's nothing you can do about it. So i'm going to do my layers about here and i'm not going to just cut a straight line because that's going to make the layer very blunt and thick, i want it to be a little bit softer so that it blends better. So i'm going to actually cut into the hair like this, i'm going to point cut it so and just be careful do this slowly so that you don't accidentally cut yourself just like that, so it's not a perfect straight across cut! So then, when i let that layer just cut down you can see, this is the shortest piece and then it just gradually gets longer. There'S no choppiness, no steps it just blends really nicely as you're working your way across the head and doing your beach ball or pie sections. If clipping the extra hair out of the way helps you to stay neat and organized feel free to do that, sometimes, especially if the hair is really thick, it gets a little bit overwhelming the neater and more organized you stay. The easier things will be so we have our first layered piece now. I'M gon na work over right next to where we just cut again, starting at the top of the head. I'M going to come down girlfriend. Can you stay still? Please come down and make another pie section. Hopefully you guys can see this okay. This is my first time doing a tutorial on a mannequin and filming by myself, with only one camera and with a makeshift tripod. So it's a little bit difficult. Okay, so once we're ready to do our next section, we want to use that piece that we just cut as our guide, because it's a little bit tricky to remember. Okay, exactly what angle did i hold the hair up at right and you want all the layers? I mean like i said they don't have to be perfect, but you want them to more or less be pretty. Even i don't know if you'll be able to see from the camera, but i can see through this piece and it's really important when you're taking these pieces, that they're not too thick, because if the sections that you're grabbing are too thick you're not going to be Able to see through them to see your guide and where you need to make your cut, so i'm making sure i'm holding it at an angle where my guide piece all looks pretty much like a straight line. That'S how i know it's the right angle to cut at or the right elevation i should say to cut at and then we're gon na go through and we're gon na cut this next piece and again we're point cutting so we're cutting into the hair to keep It soft so then you can see the shortest layer is pretty much all the same length. The longest layer is all pretty much the same length and we're just going to continue that all across the back of the head. So once we're done cutting all of the layers in the back, you can go through and make sure that you didn't miss any pieces and that everything is matching up and is pretty even so. What i do is i just go through and i just hold out the shortest layer make sure that's all matching up go down to the longest layer, make sure that's all about the same length, and it is so we're good now. Moving on to the front, this is where it can get a little tricky, and this is where i see a lot of people mess up. Some people will just continue doing the layers the exact same way, but remember, there's less hair in the front, whereas in the back you still have all of this hair. Underneath in the front, you don't have that. So if you cut these layers all the same way, the front pieces are going to be really really short and it's going to look a little bit kind of like a mullet which, if that's the look you're going for that's totally fine. But usually that's not. And people end up doing that as a mistake, so we're going to continue with the pie sections, but instead of holding it up and out at an angle where it's at i'm gon na bring it all the way to the back and i'm gon na match it Up with the hair in the back of the head by over directing the hair or pulling it as far away as possible from where it's growing out of the scalp that's going to allow you to leave more length and that's what we want in the front. We want more length, so i'm going to bring it to these layers in the back which, when i do so, i'm only cutting a little tiny bit off the front, not nearly as much this piece, i'm just taking a little bit off, barely any, and then these Front most pieces, i leave till the very end, so i'm gon na spin around and move on to this side, pi section bring it all the way to the back. So hopefully, you can kind of see matching it up with the layers from the middle of the back of the head again, not a lot. We'Re cutting less from the front because we don't want that to be as short and then this last piece just cutting off a little bit so from here. We can take this bottom piece out now. Moving on to the front, all you want to do is brush this down and then just kind of come at a downward angle and meet it up with the longest length in the front so that it creates a little bit of a face frame so that it's A tiny bit shorter in the front and then gradually gets longer same thing on this side. I'M gon na hold these pieces out to see where my shortest piece starts, so that i have that as my guide and then we're just going to do the same thing. Starting with that shortest piece, we're just going to kind of glide our scissors down at an angle to the longest piece. So there you go there's your long layers. You can see how it gradually goes from shorter to longer in the front and on the sides, and then the back is all nice and layered, so that is it for this video. I hope that it was helpful and you were able to see everything. Okay, like i said it was my first time doing something like this: with a mannequin and just recording by myself. I only have one camera, so it's a little hard to show all the different angles, but hopefully you got the gist of it and understood everything. If you have any questions feel free to leave them down below, or you can reach out to me privately on instagram, if you'd, like my username, is at styledbysamvey and, like i said in the beginning, if you enjoyed this video, i would really appreciate it. If you would give it a thumbs up and subscribe to my channel, i'm going to try to do as much diy hair content for you guys as possible during this time, so make sure you're subscribed to my channel. If you want to see more of that - and hopefully i'll see you in my next one bye foreign

Matthew Barefoot: I’ve never cut hair before. I watched this and my wife’s hair turned out perfectly. This video made it really simple. Thank you.

Jeanette Alexandra: you taught this way better than my cosmetology teacher did

SparkElle Beauty: This was definitely the most helpful video for layering my own hair. I went through tons of videos to see what the easiest way to cut my hair without making it look ratchet, and this is exactly what I was looking for. Not too complicated & you made it very simple to understand and follow. Thank you so much for this! <3

Emily Lee: Thank you so much for this! I’m in cosmetology school but we’re shut down right now and I feel so anxious about not getting my hands on experience! This really helped me understand cutting layers better.

Carm 1347: I am so impressed with the generosity of people like you. I’ve been in quarantine for months and my thick hair was out of control. I originally had layers but when I cut off some length I had “triangle head.” I watched your video over and over and followed you as best as I could on my own head. I think I got it! I know it is not professional but it’s way better than it was and no more TH! Thank you. ❤️

Amanda Lee: Great tutorial. I’m a student with a layered cut tomorrow so this was extremely helpful! Thanks!

Alondra: New haircut stylist here ‍♀️ thanks Sam for showing a different way of achieving long layers. I have difficulty mastering this haircut so thank you for this demo.

グティエレスザルディ: Thank you for teaching how to cut hair even for a Dad like me who was forced to do it for my daughters because of pandemic.

fal00la: This is exactly exactly the tutorial I needed!!! Not over explained, very straightforward. Off to cut my sisters hair now!

Kristen Roque: I used this tutorial to cut my sister’s hair during quarantine and it turned out really well!! Thanks for the video!

Shefenrir: My mom cut my hair using this tutorial and it worked super well! I loved it! The tutorial was super easy to understand and really accessable for someone who has never even touched shears! 11/10 would reccommend!

Stina Baby21: This was so helpful! I’ve been cutting my own hair (super curly) and I went to someone I thought was reputable and they made one side of my head look like a box and seeing where you match up your lengths cleared some stuff up for me. For the past couple of weeks I would just randomly cut a curl that stood out like a couple of end but every day I cowash or refresh

Rukiachan05: This tutorial was so easy to follow compared to the others on youtube. It finally makes sense to me, thank you so much!

Vicky Hawblitzel: Great tutorials! Easy to follow and it makes perfect sense . Thanks

Amanda Robinson: Perfect! Thank you! I’m so stressed about this bc we’re cutting each other’s hair today ( in cosmo class and first hair cuts!!) so I wanted a recap without going through the book lol

Sonya Dineva: So well explained. I have never done it but feel as if I can cut hair like a pro now. Thanks a lot!

Jazmin Naranjo: Can't wait to cut mine super easy explaining everything what I want for my hair thanks again girl

Alyssa: It’s so kind of you to share your skills with us especially at a time where we’re all unable to go to the salon. Thank you!!

Claire Martinez Bunning: Amazing! Thanks for sharing, feel I can now have a go at cutting layers. You explained everything so clearly. X

Amanda Canseco: Thank you so much! Best long layer tutorial ever, never thought about sectioning off bottom of hair- great tip!

Jonell Farris: Just did my daughters hair and it came out nicely! Thank you ☺️

Corri Szucs: Very helpful! It's gives me more confidence to cut more length now since I was sort of already doing this half assed. My sides still scare me though but seeing how little you cut off; I figure it doesn't matter if I don't do much. At this point I really just want to get my brush through my hair!! Thanks also for showing this dry, that's the only way I'll cut my curly/wavy hair. :)

Gina Raab: Thank you so much for this video. It was so helpful. I layered my daughter's long hair for the first time!

Sarah Hohol: I literally don’t cut hair at all, but I’ve started learning because of you!! Love these, thanks babe!!

Madeline Brown: Hey Sam! As a video series suggestion, could you start a DIY haircutting at home series for all of us in quarantine? There's some videos on YouTube already, but it's different doing it on yoursef versus cutting hair on a mannequin.

Hello Google: I found your long layers hair cut tutorial very helpful and easy to understand. Thank you Sam for your video and hopefully more videos like this posted in the near future.

Hayley: thank you for this! i love how detailed this video is too, way more helpful than other videos i watched

C. C. C.: Oh my goodness what a wonderful video you did absolutely excellent. From the proper way to hold the scissors to your silly mannequin I enjoyed every bit of it. I especially appreciate you explaining different angles and what happens to the hair so Bravo to you girl you did a wonderful job.

Kathy Gascon: Absolutely EXCELLENT tutorial!!! Thank you!!!

Annette: This video taught me to give my first client hair cut thank you soo much. You’re an amazing teacher

Yanice Velez: Ya he visto varios videos y éste es uno de los mejores, explicaciones simples y estructuradas Gracias

Emily Harrison: Finally, the first video to explain layers! Your beach ball/pie explanation was super helpful! Can you also take it a step further and explain how you might use thinning shears in addition to layers for us thick-haired gals?

Jana Medveďová: Thank you so much for this video! ❤️ I am wearing this type of haircut basically all my life and I grew so sick of it! ... Every single time I get to go to a salon (not often at all), I ask for a blunt cut and to even out my hair to finally get rid of those layers... And every single time, all hairdressers used this kind of a technique on my hair which is just soooo wrong. All the time I have been blaming my own hair, thinking it was a spontaneous hair breakage in the back of my head or something like that. Now I understand! I don't know what and why the ladies I visited misunderstood about my request (maybe something about my mother language but I really doubt it)... I guess I am going to show this but mostly your another blunt-cut tutorial video to my mom or my boyfriend or whoever because that's what I am asking for since years! Thank you sooo so much, it's a life-changer for me! ❤️ Ps: Of course, you have a new subscriber. Best wishes!

Sybil Disobedience: Sam you’re amazing! You really are very good at instructing. A skill set that is worth gold in Silicon Valley. Thanks so much for this tutorial.

jose martin chilet: i wanna cry ♥️ this video was so helpful and inspiring... during this quarantine i've been taking several classes about haircutting and now you, as one of my favorite youtubers, are giving it too. This couldn't be more inspiring ♥️♥️♥️ thank you so much! ♥️ and could you please help me with something? I was wondering why you directed the hair to the back on the left side of the model and why not on the right side. And also, could you please tell me what would happen if i bring the section all the way forward when cutting the side layers? Thank you so much and sorry I'm asking too much I think. Thank you so much for all the amazing content on this channel. TBH if it weren't because of you, I think i would've gave up on becoming a hairstylist ♥️♥️ thanks again!

Faith Vrablic: Great video! Very simple and easy to understand

junimondify: Have no intention on cutting my hair myself because it never lies the way I want it, yet I love these kind of videos. Just so interesting to see how it's done and why.

anthony falcone: This is my first time watching your videos, and you've done a great job! It was easy to understand, and a very nice outcome for the finished look. Faith Falcone

leah clinton: Thanks so much you made this super easy!

Natasha Eccles: You are a fantastic teacher, Sam!! Thank you so much!

Brandi Smith: You are a great teacher. Your talk through with demonstration is priceless. Thank you!

AZ 808: So happy I found your channel! I'm hopefully starting cos school towards the end of this year, after working full time since I was 19. Hair design has never left my brain, and though I'm sad I didn't start this career sooner, obviously everything plays out for a reason. Anyway, I am taking my "pre-reqs" by watching your channel :)

Lisa Love: wow that was really helpful! definitely can’t wait to try it lol thank you so much!

Lilian S: Sam, thank you so much for this video! I joked with my fiancé (halfway serious) that I would just have him cut my hair straight across because my hair is sooooo long and I could never do my own layers. Will keep you posted if I end up trimming my own hair. I may have to help my fiancé cut his hair when his clippers arrive. Jesus, grab the wheel!!!!

Lotus Beauty: Thanks so much for this video. I haven't been licensed long and I'm way more comfortable with color than cuts so this is super helpful. I would love to see a basic pixie cut from you.

NT: Great teaching video!!! You can tell its a perfectly balanced long layered cut even with the crappy manequinn hair it looks perfect.

NT: Great teaching video!!! You can tell its a perfectly balanced long layered cut even with the crappy manequinn hair it looks perfect.

Wendy: Your truly the most humble person Sam really I've watched a lot of your videos hands down most down to earth person I've seen yet so professional at the same time your work and talent is very much appreciated a true artist you are!!! Keep shining!!!

Viva Dizor: Hi! I’m currently in school now and I just can’t grasp cutting as much as other specialties. I did layers on my doll head today and now on the look out for a video that gave me an “aha” moment. This video was the one. Thank you! I’m going to try your technique tomorrow.

phi chau: Omg your video was the most easiest to understand! You described everything so well and it all made sense. Thank you!

ElleaBh: One of the best video I have ever seen for layered haircut. Thank you for such a detailed description.

Martin Adams: Very helpful & clearly explained . Thanks heaps .

stacy Reed: Girl you the bomb. You explained it perfectly ❤️

Simply Marilyn: Thanks Sam....so helpful! I will be doing this to my wig!

Destynee Dreher: Seriously the easiest video to follow thank you so much ❤️❤️

Tanya Rivera: The “choppy layers” are the exact reason I don’t get a haircut for a year to over a year at a time. I try to wait as long as I possibly can before getting my hair cut. But eventually the split ends win and I NEED to go in. I always get left with choppy/blunt ends. They never look blended. I have really, really thick hair. The choppy ends show soooooo much more. I haven’t found a stylist in my area that can leave my ends looking blended instead of choppy. I always have a fear when going into a salon that my hair is going to look bad when I leave because it does. And I always feel bad saying anything. I just say thank you, leave a tip, and walk out not loving my hair. And then I wait another year or two

Hope Amaryah: Cosmetologist in progress, here! I cut my sisters hair yesterday, but she has a very dramatic side part and here hair is actually pretty thin in the front, or at least on that less dramatic side. How would you recommend going about a dramatic side part? Especially when they have somewhat thinner hair? It took me a long time to do the front as I went slowly with lots of overdirection so the layers wouldn't be to separated, but agh. Also It sounds like she had a 90 in the past, so that's what I did in the back, but then I readjusted my methods on the front to make sure it wasn't too short (she said something like it was shorter than she thought) and cut it to the part. It looked really defined and voluminous on one side, where as I did almost nothing on the left...

Connie Teasley: That was the best hair cut tutorial EVER! Thank you.

Natalie: You're really good at explaining thing! Fantastic teacher!!

Faith Hunter: Thank you!! I'm starting a new job soon and I haven't cut hair in a few months and I'm a little rusty on my hair geometry You explained this so well

Life as Geb: Ok so I graduated cosmo school almost 2 1/2 years ago I tried to work in a salon after school but was never actually taught how to cut hair. I finally feel like a lightbulb went off after watching this video. Thank you so much. Please make more videos because u don’t understand how much this has helped me!! Thank you so much.

Marina McGowen: You are so awesome… love your instructional videos of hair cuts! I learn so much from you… please more ;)

Fotomom 2: Loved it -thank you!

Breiona Moulder: This was THE best video I’ve seen on how to cut layers, Thankyou so much!

Johana: Thank you SO MUCH!!! This video was very helpful I always freak myself out when it comes to layers

Vero D.: This is very helpful. I'm immunocompromised and unable to make it to the salon. Gonna get my husband to do this for me. Thank you so much!

Lisa M: Thank you! Very well explained. Just subscribed.

Lindsay Núñez: Great job! Thank you!

Eva Mac: Its nearly always better to cut on wet hair as that makes the hair heavy and drags it down creating a more precise hair cut. Especially considering not everyone has perfectly straight hair : )

Eliz: Very informative! Thank you

Stargazer77: Best hair tutorial I have seen! Thank you!

sorcha McAnally: Absolutely the best layered haircut video on YouTube, and I should know, I've watched them all !

Aphrodite1018: Love that ur doing this! I'm about a year behind u. I miss my job n clients!!! I literally watched this cuz I miss the feel of being in the shop. Stay well and thank u for helping people get thru this time. It's a strange world at the moment. Much love and respect!

zoo: Sam, the perimeter at the bottom that you clipped away- for me, if it has been cut straight across in the back bluntly, with even a little point cutting, it is still heavy. How do you marry these two sections after layering? Also I prefer just to layer the bottom 2-3 inches, so can I just pie slice and hold up the section at a 25-30 degree angle down low and trim and let what ever falls from perimeter fall?

mia in genovia: thank you so much for sharing this!! my school has done a pretty shit job of teaching unfortunately and this was super helpful!

Joanna: Best hair cutting video I've seen. when I graduated from beauty school I was having hard time cutting hair because I was so focused on passing state board I'm hoping to see more haircuting videos tsm from the bottom of my heart !❤

Akera Tinea: Thank you so much !! You explain this so well and I’m so grateful for this video thank you thank you thank ❤❤❤❤❤❤

NC: Best hair cutting video I’ve ever watched! They are usually so confusing! Thanks!!

V V: Whoa, holding the shears the proper way allows me to have so much more control!

jaklin fernandes: Beautifully explained

Annette: Love this tutorial so ez to see and follow #justlicenced Thank you ☮️

Lady Slay: I've been wanting to go to cosmetology school so bad. I spent my life in the medical field but I am scared to make the change because I am 32 year old single mama of 3 and finances aren't solid! Your videos are inspiring me to follow my dream again. Thank you for your sharing your passion. Its helping me follow mine.

Ginnette Rodriguez: You did great. Thank you!

Margaritaj: The outcome is so pretty

Charleasa J: Wow Sam You rock for this you made it so easy for me thank you thank you thank you

May Eatonne: We tried this on my hair, and its very thick but not curly or anything. I'll just say, if you have thick hair this may not be the technique for you. We did very subtle layers and it looks very step-y because the bottom layer is very obvious. Just be careful (: but if you have thin hair I bet this looks great
