Step 1: Prepare floss strands

Choose at least 2 1-yard strands of embroidery floss in different colors, and cut each to twice the length of the wearer's hair.

Step 2: Braid hair section

Take a small section of hair about the width of a paper clip from the top or side of the head and braid it all the way down, securing it with an elastic at the bottom.

Tip

Use a hair clip to pull the remaining hair out of the way so you can work freely with the braided section.

Step 3: Tie starter knot

Hold 2 strands of floss together under the base of the braid and tie a basic overhand knot around it, as close to the scalp as is comfortable for the wearer.

Step 4: Separate strands

Separate 2 strands of one color from the braid, holding the remaining strands and the braid together with your other hand.

Step 5: Wrap first color

Wrap the color you separated tightly around the braid and the remaining strands downward from the base of the knot.

Tip

If you find it difficult to hold the wraps tight, an alternative method is to thread the end of the string through the loop to form a knot each time you make a wrap.

Step 6: Switch colors

Switch colors every 1 centimeter to 1 inch of wrapping, by dropping the working strands and picking up the strands of a different color. Continue wrapping tightly and alternating colors until you reach the elastic at the end of the braid.

Tip

Add a pony bead for decoration at the end of the braid by wrapping a small piece of paper around the loose ends of hair and string, and threading the bead on. Remove the paper.

Step 7: Tie off

Remove the elastic at the bottom of the braid and tie off the wrap by making a secure double overhand knot with each set of floss strands. Style the rest of your hair to show off your fashionable new wrap.

LittleLulubee: I used to wear these when I was a teen!! So cute! Yes, you can wash your hair with them. Keep them in as long as they stay looking nice, it's up to you. Have fun :)

ADAdams: My sister also adds beads and charms at the end of the hair wrap! It looks really cute!

Grace Amron: How to take out: Cut the knot you did at the bottom. Start unwinding the wrap (I used a bit of conditioner on my hair, it made it easier to unwind) When you reach the top, undo the knot and voila, hair wrap gone :)

Rachel Quackenbush: Yo everybody Just wanted to tell y'all that this works MUCH MUCH better if you braid the hair first. It really doesn't work that well without braiding it.

Heather Noyes: You can carefully cut the floss then unwrap it from your hair. I've had them twice. You can also simply continue adding as your hair grows to keep it looking good.

Beatrix Bodó: A horror story: I had one of these when I was about 14 and I had it for a few weeks, maybe more than a month (it looked totally fine, endured hair washing and everything), and all of a sudden it fell out – with my hair in it :) Strangely it didn't left a bald spot, I guess my hair grew gradually while the wrap weakened. My hair was very damaged, because I already dyed it quite a few times by that time, so it probably was partially my fault.

nikki noa: I learned to braid the hair, wrap it around tightly and switch colors randomly to make it look cooler, this stays in your hair up to 2 months or depending on how well the string will hold, or how tightly its tied. To remove, simply cut the knot at the top and bottom, then slide the string down. I recommend you don't do it on top, otherwise it will stick up (I hope this was helpful)

lifebloodlock: Just so people know, you don't have to cut out your hair to remove it. You just untie/undo the knots. I do the knot each time around in my hair and I've never had a problem. You just wash it like the rest of your hair. I do these all the time; I have lots of them!

icysnowcat: even tho these aren't all that popular anymore, my friends and i love to have them in the summertime for even just a week- we just like having the color and for us, they are almost like our personal symbols of summer just because we always make them together.

Cheryl0024: Making a hair wrap with it's design colors inspired by Yuna's (from the game Final Fantasy X and X2) earring; including the little tassel thing at the end. :) By the way, does anyone know how long the hair wrap will last? I remember a classmate of mine had a hair wrap done by someone over at venice beach and she says that it's "permanent" and won't come off unless you cut that part of your hair.

Mauryn Larin: this vid was very helpful!!

Heather Everhart: I was wondering: could you just use regular thread? For like, sewing?

BlueberryKiddie: @wolfgirl3363 no . you don't have to cut it off! if you don't tie it in your hair to tight it comes out really easy. ( I made one last night and I took it out today and made another one and I didn't cut my hair ) =:)

Arina Evsyukova: thankk you so muchh <3 myy mom justt madee mee one off thesee <3 and i freakinnn love itt

michelatraf: you need to braid the hair first to prevent it from sliding off the hair. i have one in right now and i had another one before and they both braided my hair

Tiffany Leigh: THANK YOU SO MUCH :)

Heather Everhart: @adventuresofFarward well i did do it with regular thread and it turned out AWESOME

LhamoEx: I thought it said hair "whip" so I started singing " I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH I WHIP MY HAIR BACK AND FORTH!"

JackSparrowWannaBe: @RealMissMoonBunny I know! But my cousin did some in her hair the other day (she is a hair stylist) but with more neutral colors and some really classy beads, and it kind of had a "Prince of Persia" feel to it... it was actually really pretty and subtle... they were also much smaller... they didn't start at the base of the hair, and then ended much sooner than the end. When done right, I think they can still look "en vogue"... =)

Larklaska: I tried it but ont the end my wraps are getting soo thin! it doesn´t look that good... I got once one on vacation and it had the same thickness till the end. Maybe one of you can help me?

2007battman: I just did one of these Piece o cake! Try it its easy!!!

lacey sorresso: thanks so much!

Naomi Craner: how do you take them out?

Melanie A.: Ummm a lot of u r asking how to take it off well I got my hair wrap at a camp and u can take it off by unraveling each knot or if u didn't do ur knots too tight then u cut the bottom of the first knot and it will all slip out together(mine slipped out) or if ur having trouble to take it out well u can cut ur entire hair wrap off but I wouldn't do that I'm pretty sure there's a way into taking it out

Sandra Chvojka: So.. You use 2 strands for each color?

Rylee Rigney: What was the peice of paper for

Samantha: how does it come out?

Paula Antoinette: it would help to braid the hair first

cutiesoprano18: i remember my cousin had that when i was little

Lauren Dunn: how do you take it out

Kittycat42300: just asking um how do you take it of?

Abby: Oh man this video is like a time capsule

Skmg: I did it with ribbon

Lauren: yesss!! ty so much lol -3

BeckyElf: The wrap would've caused your hair to be pulled in a way it's not used to I guess :L not to worry!

Savanna Chapman: I cannot do my part with this thing in my hair. It's impossible!

The_SimpleThings: Don't believe all the hateful comments below. We did this when I was a teen and I NEVER had to cut my hair off. You just cut the not at the bottom off it you have too and start slowly working it off from the bottom up and it's especially easy if you just wrap it around your hair and don't knot it everytime then once you undo the knot at the bottom you just unwrap it and pull it off. You wash your hair like normal.

Ivylanglovers: how wouldnt you take it out? obviously take out the end knot and unravel it?

laura beth: There is an easier way, I promise.

Sheila: this is the first video i like from howcast

mikaelcirca: lol I've had mine in for four years, I keep wrapping it when it grows. You guys are scaredy cats, it's not even bad.

Beatrix Stewart: Is it bad that the first thing I thought when I saw this was uh oh she's a slytherin? I think it is

TheJessica1685: How do u take it off

SAVVYIRL: You need HAIR for this, well shit I guess I'm out. Hahahah

oxford pictionary: these are definitely popular again but only if you wear them in a piece of hair just behind your ear. i see it all the time.

Catarina Maple: yes use youre finger nail to make a cross the bumps

lauren bilhorn: its not all u do is if u have it plain wraped with out putting the end through all u do is untie the knot and unwrap but if u put it through the little loopy thing then u seaprate i in sectons ad pull i just un did mine about 15 munites ago i did red and i m going to do a blue one in a bouwt 15 minitz

BaileeSings: i have it in my hair my friends mom did it and i dont know how to get it out

Stephanie Fitzmorris: I think people do not get that maybe "you need hair" was and probably is suppose to be sarcastically obvious. You know, funny.

AdventuresofFatward: @xXxGweexXx No it's to thin.

ImTheEmma: @abovethebones you dont actually need the pony bead

Monique Carrera: Lol I had a long one buh thing is afterwards they have to cut that pieace of hair!

lauren bilhorn: also it lasts however long u want it 2

Jay: Wtf !! it's the most hideous thing i have ever seen in my whole life ewww .. Btw there is a lot like this in any girls shop in the world but looks waaay better lol

2007battman: The wearer looks like the wrap is in her face!!!

HankCassette: "You will need hair" well no shit.

Alyson Taylor: You can shower with it

AdventuresofFatward: "You will need hair" NO DUH! This vid did help overall I guess.

Michaela O: Yes you can shower with them,

Regan Whitney: @rfhwang Why don't they allow it?

shayleigh leClair: to put the beed on

SunnyNutQueerios: Yeaaaa.... What if you only want one color

ADAdams: My sister does really cool designs and they are better than this. But this is also a simpler way to do it too. Summer is coming up! Time for a new hair wrap! XD!

Renajha Cooper: Wat I said a wrap meanin all of ur hair out duhh people learn

TheAnthronut: lol - pony bead :p

48NightHawk: hahahahahahahaha the voice is so crack up!!! :L :L :L :L
